Waterfalls
Nestled in the stunning Newlands Pass, Moss Force Waterfall is a majestic sight to behold, standing at 328ft high. The waterfall consists of three sections, with water splitting around a rock projection before cascading down the ravine. It's one of several waterfalls in the Lake District near Buttermere, offering varying levels of difficulty to reach. Despite its relatively easy accessibility and nearby parking, visitors should be cautious as it can get slippery closer to the waterfall.
This waterfall above Buttermere was just amazing.. . a short walk from the car park and easy to access, though the final ascent to the top was very rocky and slippery! But the views were just glorious ...
Gary W — Google review
Stunning place! The drive leading to the waterfall offers breathtaking views and you can already see it from the route. The waterfall is located literally next to a free car park so you don’t have to walk far. There is a hike leading further up next to it too. Worth popping by to see such a beauty! Views are stunning.
A — Google review
A beautiful area. Great view of the waterfall from the car park (which is free). A steep climb to the top, or base of the waterfall but fantastic views that make it worth it
Viking D — Google review
Stopped off on my way to Buttermere definitely worth while stopping it's a 15-minute walk to Moss Force waterfall from the carpark. There are some absolutely stunning views from the top.
Ben W — Google review
Just unbelievable, you could see almost the whole course of the waterfall from the top of the mountain. Beautiful green space all around. Very good condition of the road (visited in summer). Plenty of free parking below the waterfall. No tickets needed.
Aida R — Google review
Very short walk from the car park to the falls. Can be slippy. Beautiful.
Bethany P — Google review
Beautiful waterfall running all the way down to the valley. Well with a visit. Limited parking - around 8 - 10 cars. Reasonably easy walk up in dry weather. It rained when I read there and the path did get a bit muddy and slippery.
Frits V — Google review
Free to see. Very very lovely waterfall. Bit of a climb up and down rocks to get to but worth it!

Mountain peak
Rannerdale Knotts is a picturesque Cumbrian hill in the Lake District, featuring a moderate ascent to its peak at 1,165 feet. A popular 7.5-mile circular walk takes approximately four hours and offers breathtaking views of Buttermere and the surrounding peaks. The route showcases beautiful meadows, lakeshores with beech and yellow birch trees, and stunning bluebell displays in spring.
Absolutely fabulous visit and the bluebells are better than recent years. Dappled sunshine and views of the bells again lakes and mountains perfect for those camera shots. Parking is hard unless you are before 9. Mind you I suspect an evening viewing would be perfect.
Alan J — Google review
Great hill to walk up. We parked in a small, free carpark next to Crummock Water, then headed half a mile up steep, stony paths to reach the top. The view from above just after sunset time was simply stunning. Unfortunately we missed the bluebells though, maybe next year!
Donna W — Google review
I did this walk from the car park at Crummock water two days ago and loved it. There is a moderate longish plod up hill through Rannerdale to the col opposite Robinson - and then the lovely undulating ridge walk with spectacular views of the fells and lakes below. Sadly I was just too early to capture the fields of bluebells near Squat beck. I agree with other reviews that the very steep stone steps down from the summit of Rannerdale Knott need a lot of care - they can be slippery or uneven. But this is a walk I'd certainly do again, maybe in May when the bluebells are more spectacular. You can see them in my second photo if you look hard! They are there. The last photo showing the steep path descending from Rannerdale Knott summit needs to be rotated 90 degrees I think.
Derek P — Google review
A beautiful spot just off the beaten track and not too busy, great place to spot random airforce flybys too
Alex C — Google review
This is a small yet quirky mountain. When you hike from Whiteless Pike you get to walk up the lovely ridge to the summit. The route back down to the road is reasonable as well, and the views from the top of Crummock Water are immense.
Rob — Google review
Amazing views. The walk wasn't too strainuous. It took us 3 hours to walk from the Buttermere village to the Rannerdale summit and down again to Buttermere. The way down from the summit was very steep and slippery so be careful.
Vincent R — Google review
Excellent medium fell walk that starts gently up the hidden valley, then breathtaking views of Fleetwirth Pike, Hay stacks, Scarth Gap, Red Pike, Grasmoor, & Whiteless Pike, as well as three lakes. Final decent is short and tricky down steps but we managed it with a nutty dog & an 82 year old. Arrive early as parking is limited.
Moss E — Google review
A lovely little hill with stunning views in all directions. We visited during bluebell season, and a walk through these is fairly easy. Well worth a visit

Scale Force Waterfall, located near Buttermere in the Lake District, is a stunning natural wonder that stands at an impressive height of 170 feet. This makes it the tallest waterfall in the area. The waterfall consists of three falls, with two smaller ones measuring around 20 feet each. Visitors can admire the grandeur of Scale Force as it cascades down a steep rockface on the northern side of Red Pike. The surrounding tree-lined gorge adds to its picturesque setting.
Beautiful, secluded, unspoiled spot, in the heart of the Western Lakes - Lovely walk up to it from Buttermere, not over strenuous on either of the two routes, just can get boggy in some places
Ben M — Google review
Wonderful hike to scale Force. It's a stunning waterfall tucked away on the side of Red Pike near Buttermere. The hike is a little technical at times due to erosion of the trail but nothing to complete. If you get to the waterfall erly you will probably have it to yourself. Absolutely stunning location.
Ben W — Google review
Such a rewarding hike once you reach the waterfall, you can climb up the first part and get to the main waterfall at the back. Just be mindful of the rocks as they can be very slippery
Sam S — Google review
Moderate but fun Hike, Some Boggie Parts so Bring Waterproof Boots, well worth the walk.

Fantastic place for a day trip. Highly recommend to climb hire to actual waterfall. It is challenging climb, so not for everyone but definitely worth it!

Lovely walk from buttermere village, heading towards buttermere lake but instead turn right and follow the track. You will walk through some very narrow peices and head towards crummock water but you will soon start to follow the track left and start to climb up. Lovely water fallespcially after it has been raining. Kids loved it and I loved the views.

Charming little venue with friendly and helpful staff. Little confusing when we were told to sit on allocated seats but then no one to actually point us to the seats we were supposed to be in but it ended up not mattering so very minor. Great to see a independent venue like this selling out for a gig, need more support! Drinks all seemed very well priced too.

Lovely staff, always pick up my gardening books from here. Got a lucky dip book and some free coffee grounds for my gardening. Tried the soup today and it is the best soup I have ever had. Thank you for being such a lovely shop

We had a really fantastic lunch here. We were looking for some lunch in the area, but unfortunately everything was just basic stuff. This piece was totally different to the food. He was absolute fantastic and we had a very very best lunch you could imagine. Both myself and my wife enjoyed our meals. I had the rarebit and my wife had the frittata. Highly recommended !

Lovely little bookshop, with a nice cafe at the back. Has various events on through the month, though I haven't been to any. Good stock of fiction books too, especially crime.

An excellent independent bookshop with a fabulous coffee shop too! We wanted a couple of books that they didn't have in stock but they ordered them for us and we collected the next day. Definitely worth a browse when you're in Cockermouth.

National Trust - Wordsworth House and Garden is a historic Georgian townhouse in Cockermouth, once the childhood home of poet William Wordsworth. Managed by National Trust, the house offers a glimpse into life 250 years ago with period details like a working kitchen, children's bedroom, and the Wordsworth Room filled with books and games. The garden features 18th-century vegetables, fruits, and herbs just as it was when William played there as a child.
The smell of this house is incredible. The local caretakers take great care of this place, inside there are still personal items and manuscripts of Mr. William also the table in the main dining room is still set and the caretakers continue to cook meals from old recipes, occasionally replacing them with new ones so that visitors can see food from several centuries ago. Beautiful paintings and a natural garden where he drew inspiration. Large rooms and a kitchen full of trinkets from almost 300 years ago. I highly recommend visiting this place when passing through this small old town
Paula — Google review
Great to look round where Wordsworth was born and lived. Steps up into the building and out into the garden. But they do have a lift which would get you in to see the ground floor and back down so you can get into the walled garden. Explore the walled garden that has plenty of fruit trees and plants/flowers not massive but has a lot packed in. Toilets and children's area indoors and small shop. Staff very welcoming and informative.
Clare.harding@gmail.com A — Google review
Although I'm not a fan of poetry I found this house and garden really worth a visit. The audio tour guide is well worth it because it brings the house and contents alive in a way pure text can't. The story surrounding Wordsworth and his family is both fascinating and tragic. His parents both died quite young and the hardship they experienced is sobering.
Paul B — Google review
When I planned my visit I mistakenly thought this was the famous Wordsworth house in Grasmere; but quickly realized it’s a different one. While it wasnt the historic literary landmark I had in mind, staffs were very friendly and welcoming. They clearly care about the visitor experience and took the time to answer questions and share interesting details about the house. There are no much restrictions. The back garden was nice with apple trees❤️ Although it didn’t quite match my expectations in terms of literary history, the warm atmosphere and attentive service made it an enjoyable stop. If you’re in the area and looking for a peaceful visit with kind hosts, it’s still worth visiting.
Fayas C — Google review
What a fantastic place to visit. I’m not really a poetry fan, and yes we did Wordsworth when I was in school, and I knew something about them. However, this is a fantastic way to find out about him, his poetry, and also his works not only in literature but always saving the Lake District and preserving nature, et cetera.
Shane M — Google review
I have wondered past this place a number of times but whilst working in Cockermouth but only now found time to visit and it was so worth while. Loads to see and a beautiful cottage garden at the back. The house gives a real insight into the Wordsworth family life and it's ups and downs. Definitely worth a second visit soon
Allan B — Google review
Well worth a visit, many full displays and helpful literature readily available, plus the gardens which extend to a view of the river. Forming an image of the young Wordsworth family including William and the role his father played in the area.

Lovely building and understand that the house had other residents over the years so the interior is a representation of what it could of been like when Wordsworth was a child

Visited last Saturday with partner and new born, very busy but was handle very well by staff, all very organised kitchen and waiting staff, appeared to be smooth operation. Waitress was lovely, gave her a small tip as that’s all we had enjoyed our cake and hot chocolate very much. Lovely experience
Amy M — Google review
It was a really awful experience, they served one meal long before the others so one of our party had finished their food a whole 25 minutes before the rest were served! The late food was then wrong! And we had to wait for more to be made. When asked what was going on, we were just told they were making it now, and then waited another 10 minutes for it to arrive. We received no apology for the disparity in time and then excuses for why the food was wrong, whilst the table next to us who came in much later received all their food after our first person got theirs, but before any of the others got theirs, despite having very similar meals! The cafe was not at all busy when we arrived, so there's no excuse for such lousy service? There weren't even breakfast menus on all the tables, despite them only serving breakfast until 11am and we came in at 9:30! They also have signs and notes about allergies but absolutely nothing safe for gluten-free/celiac people and the staff had no idea what was going on (either about allergies or even what they are supposed to be making!). We had to explain what gluten free meant and then the staff member informed us they no longer did anything like that. Honestly, the food was not even worth the wait and if we hadn't been made to pay on ordering, we would have left. I would recommend going anywhere else instead!

Main Street Fisheries is a beloved spot for fish and chips, renowned for its exceptional quality. Many visitors rave about the perfectly cooked fish, which boasts a crispy batter that keeps it moist and flavorful. The chips are equally impressive—golden brown with a delightful homemade taste that sets them apart from typical offerings. While the venue can get quite busy, leading to occasional waits, patrons appreciate the friendly service and generous portions that make every visit worthwhile.
Staff don't seem all that friendly then again who wants to be at 8pm on a Tuesday. Fish was absolutly tremendous and chips done just like home made lovly golden brown with that chip pan flavour, not this bright white tasteless crap everywhere seems to serve now days Highly recommend! Will be back

Lovely. Although busy the staff were friendly and efficient. The cod was fresh, tasty and cooked to perfection. The batter was crispy but still had a soft coating for the fish stopping it from drying up. The chips were soft and flavourful, just how I like them. The portion was big and absolutely worth the money. Highly recommend.

My wife and I had fish and chips here recently and it was excellent. We went back again though with the aim of having more fish and chips again but sadly the shop had experienced a fire and was boarded up. I hope that they are able to bounce back from this. Never nice to see people experience something like that. The people of Cockermouth are known for their resilience though and have had to deal with a lot of adversity over the years with all the flooding they've experienced. Just wanted to express my best wishes to the people who own and run the shop and my desire that they are able to get the shop back up and running again. Hopefully next time my wife and I are on holiday in the lake District we'll be able to visit again and enjoy great fish and chips once again. I hope that the remedial works to put right the damage go well! 👍

My go to venue for Fish and Chips, head and shoulders above others in my opinion. Nice chips, cooked too perfection with a slight crisp to them and beautiful fish. Alright downside is sometimes the length of wait, but that is because it's so darn popular 😀 *updated ... Numerous times it's been a 15 minute wait, only ever seems to be one staff serving

We were trying to find a place to have dinner and saw a line out of this shop! We came back later on in the day ten minutes before close and they still put two fish in for us! We got two cod, chips, a drink and a fish cake for £18! Fish was delicious! Would definitely recommend.

We visited the bitter end on Tuesday 15th June and they were super busy. However the staff were so friendly and accommodating. They made room for us and were very helpful in accommodating my need for gluten free food. The food , both a starter and two mains, was exceptional and thoroughly enjoyed. If we lived more locally we would definitely come again!

We came back for a toast after an enjoying drinks here a few nights before. Will be reviewing it separately for those drink (though will have to be on a different platform). Respectfully, it was one of the worst roast dinners I’ve ever eaten. The vegetable portions were small, the beef was dry and the gravy lacked flavour. Other food looked to be of a better standard but would not be coming back for a roast and would not recommend.

Just came in for a drink, quite a big dining room but all full even on a wet Monday night in Cockermouth. Great choice of beers, friendly staff. Food looked generous and tasty, with a few ‘gastropub’ specials.
David C — Google review
The food was great. The service was less so-slow, plates left for ages on the table, originally weren't even shown where the reserved table was on entry to the pub despite asking although another member of staff rectified this. Nice atmosphere.
Victoria H — Google review
Great pub with a few benches outside and a lot of amazing decorated space inside, incredible food and lovely staff, thank you!!!!
Amber S — Google review
Stopped here for dinner this week, a great range of ales and a fairly knowledgable bar staff that were able to offer some insight into the beers I had not heard of. The food was excellent, well presented, hot and tasty and very good value for money. One work of warning, my wife had the sticky toffee pudding and you better leave room as the portion was huge. Great atmosphere and of course the usual pack of dogs. Now whilst I don;t mind dogs in the pub when I am eating, perhaps some of the owners need to keep their pets on a shorter lead, not all that fond of a strange dog licking my leg. Suppose nothing the owners can do to stop this and did not detract from a fantastic evening out, thanks you to all the staff that make it possible.

This elegant four-star hotel seamlessly blends contemporary luxury with period charm and offers an award-winning dining experience at its genteel restaurant, casual bistro, and lounge bar. The hotel's picturesque gardens overlook the river, providing a perfect setting for al fresco lunches or afternoon tea.
We had a fabulous stay at the Hotel at the weekend. There was a small issue with our first room but Annabel quickly moved us to a new room and made sure we were comfortable. Views by the river were stunning & we had a great sleep. Breakfast had a massive selection & hot food is cooked to order, which all tasted amazing. We only had a couple of the snack items from the restaurant menu but they were also amazing. Can’t wait to come back!

Just had afternoon tea at The Trout. Food was lovely, fresh and plentiful. Even catered to my allergies without a fuss. Staff were amazing and extremely helpful. Very professional and cheerful. The hotel and grounds are amazing. Beautiful views. Would definitely recommend and visit again.

We had such a great time in the restaurant. The food was so good, really tasty, really fresh and well presented. The staff were really friendly and helpful and was overall a fantastic experience. I will be back as soon as I can.

This was a perfect location for my visit (though too short a visit) to Cockermouth. Centrally located, amenities and Wordsworth House nearby. Breakfast was fantastic, the chosen room was spacious and clean. The staff were all polite and friendly. Lastly, the daily rates are very reasonable.

Lovely hotel. I had a large room but other people I stayed with said their room was small. So I guess you have to make sure you get a good sized room by asking. Breakfast fantastic. Ate there twice. Good food. My only criticism is there was no water in the room and the room wasn't cheap.

This is our first stay at this hotel. We have family in Cockermouth we visit a few times a year. We were very disappointed with our stay. In the afternoon i ordered a Coronation chicken sandwich, it it had chunks of white stuff that was supposed to be chicken clearly processed with a slither of yellow sauce on the bread . I took a few bites of the bread and left it , I should have mentioned it but no one around to do so. The room was nice , the bed really comfortable, awful little flies flying around , my husband spent ages swotting them with his shoes. Breakfast ? well i think the least said about that the better

The rib eye steak at £35 is absurdly overcharged. A tiny piece of steak, some dry flavourless leaves from a bag and fries you can get in any pub. The mushroom tasted ok as did the grilled tomato. Take your money elsewhere. Two stars because the lad who served us was polite and friendly.

The Trout hotel in Cockermouth was absolutely amazing. From the friendly staff where nothing was too much trouble, to the comfy rooms and amazing views, this place is a gem. I can't wait to go back!

Northwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Memorial Gardens, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to St James' Church, Buttermere. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

The Memorial Gardens is a stunning riverside location with well-kept gardens and ample parking. It features a small but popular playground for young children. The walk across the bridge into Cockermouth adds to the charm of this place. However, there is a downside as the waste bins were overflowing, resulting in people leaving rubbish on the ground. Despite this issue, it offers plenty of seating options facing the river, although could benefit from more picnic benches.
Lovely place by the river. Good for dog’s walks. Plenty of benches to sit on and enjoy the view. It was raining when we went. It would be beautiful on a sunny day. 🏆

Very pleasant riverside area with a view of Cockermouth Castle (Castle not open to the public). Plenty of benches to sit on as well.

Beautiful gardens right on the river. Good parking availability. There is a small playground which is popular with little children. Lovely walk over the bridge into Cockermouth. Only down side was the waste bins needed emptying, they were full so people were leaving rubbish on the floor.

Harris Park Bowling Club is a fantastic place for various activities. It's an ideal spot for dog walking, with enclosed areas and plenty of bins for waste. The lower river areas are perfect for swimming or having a controlled BBQ in the summer. There's also a bowling green available. The park is popular with families and dog walkers, offering ample parking and easy access. However, it can get slippery due to fallen leaves on the slopes.
Excellent for dog walks. Lots of bins for dog poop, large grassy area for them to run about on and hard paths to keep your feet clean when the weather is bad. You can extend your walk down to the river and beyond if you have the time and energy.

Parking is ok. The green runs quite nicely, with the usual oddities, and the club members are welcoming. Tournaments are well run and catered. The park itself is very popular with families and dog walkers.

Lovely dog walking area. Mostly enclosed incase they fancy ignoring you. Definitely a good place to socialise a young puppy. Lots of bins for when the little fur ball does his business. The lower river areas are fantastic in summer for a quick dip, swim or controlled BBQ. A local bowling green is present for the players among you. Easy access and ample parking allow for hassle free visits. Can be very slippery on the slopes due to fallen leaves.

Harris Park is a charming destination that offers the perfect blend of relaxation and outdoor enjoyment. Visitors can indulge in delightful treats from the coffee van and ice cream van while immersing themselves in the park's serene atmosphere. The lush greenery provides an ideal setting for leisurely strolls or picnics, allowing guests to unwind amidst nature's beauty.
Lovely park to walk the dog around can drop down to the riverbank for a paddle, children's play area looks great, bowls and tennis courts, public toilets at no cost in decent condition with hand soaps provided! Bit puzzled by the large missile next to a flower bed, no details as to why. Looks like a 12 inch shell.

It's a pleasant place to walk the dog and there is plenty of provision to dispose of their poo. Pity some don't bother picking up. In winter it doesn't look it's best and recent storms have left their mark but work is underway to remedy this. A really nice asset to the town.

Its a terrific park with a children's play area containing swings, roundabout and netting on climbing frames. There are all weather tennis courts with a brand new blue surface. Nestled in the charming town of Cockermouth, The Coffee Kitchen Bakery has been delighting locals and visitors alike since its inception in 2011. Initially known for its specialty coffees and homemade cakes, the bakery expanded in 2015 to offer an even broader selection of freshly baked breads. With a commitment to quality, they use locally milled flour and avoid harmful additives, ensuring that every bite is wholesome and delicious.
The best place to buy bread & treats & the sandwiches are fantastic. The staff are always very welcoming & friendly. I never experience IBS flare ups after eating anything from here which usually happens with regular bakery products but the ingredients used here aren't full of rubbish so I'd highly recommend this delicious bakery.

St James' Church in Buttermere boasts a complimentary carpark situated above the chapel that remains accessible around-the-clock. While small in size, this parking area extends onto the roadside, ensuring ample space for visitors. It is worth noting that the lot tends to fill up quickly, so it is advisable to arrive early or during the evening hours. This quaint little church serves as an excellent starting point for embarking on a circular walk around Buttermere.
It certainly is a charming little church at the junction of the Honister and Newlands passes. There is a rough (free) car park just up behind the church. Lovely to have the church open during the day. Unusual iron shepherd gate (1968) at the entrance to this 1840 built church. The font bowl is from an earlier chapel of ease. Some fine stained glass, and by one window a memorial tablet to Alfred Wainwright - look by the organ.

Lovely little church. The needlepoint hassocks at each seat are works of art, well worth the climb up a very steep hill so be warned! Charming place, don’t miss it.

Bamboo Chinese & Thai Restaurant in Cockermouth offers a taste of the exotic with its Indian, Chinese, and Thai cuisine. The restaurant provides efficient service and delicious food, with options for both vegetarians and meat lovers. While it may be a bit pricey for dining in, the experience is definitely worth it. The cozy atmosphere and quick service make for an enjoyable dining experience. Whether you're craving Chinese or Thai dishes, Bamboo has something to satisfy your palate.
Had a meal Friday evening with my daughter and her dad. The food was excellent and the sort of prices I would expect. For the minute we walked in until we left the staff were very friendly and gave great service. Would be more than happy to recommend this place. Thank you all of you.

The service was absolutely amazing; we were served very quickly, and one kind waiter answered some of our questions about the food immediately! The food was amazing as well; we had three different types of chicken, but all of them were delicious. The sides are plenty big to share. I liked the cosy atmosphere and the decor inside.

Great Chinese resturant in Cockermouth. Food was excellent and staff very friendly. My only complaint is they only open at 5 o clock Wednesday to Sunday. Would love to go for a lunch during the week or the weekends. Otherwise well worth a visit. 👍 😋😋
David R — Google review
Saturday night walk-in but was given a table, albeit with the caveat it was needed in an hour and a half. No problem. Service was excellent, very efficient. Order taken swiftly, we ordered the Chinese banquet for 2 - set in stone menu choices (I did ask if I could swap a dish out but it was a no); wasn't a big deal really, just meant 1 dish I couldn't eat. Food was absolutely delicious. Hot, tasty, filling, plenty of rice to accompany. Cannot fault the 2/3 dishes I could eat. T'other half enjoyed all 3! Thought it was very well priced for a sit down authentic Chinese meal. Have been a few times now and have never had a bad meal.

The sixth restaurant I've visited in Cockermouth in the two weeks I have stayed here and so far this has been my favourite. The complimentary prawn crackers were unusually good. The Peeking Hot & Sour soup was excellent and the Thai Red Chicken Curry was amazing. Great meal!
Michael W — Google review
Booked a table here whilst on a weekend away, and it was honestly the most expensive Chinese we’ve ever had. 2 dishes some ribs and a drink each was £55, how they justify charging £17 for chicken fried rice and £18 for sweet and sour chicken is honestly a joke. The food itself was nice enough but we just couldn’t get over the price. We won’t be going back there.

Nestled within the charming Market Place at The Allerdale Court Hotel in Cockermouth, BLOCKS Steakhouse is a culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. This delightful steakhouse prides itself on sourcing its meat from local Cumbrian farms, ensuring every bite bursts with flavor and quality. After engaging with the community to determine their ideal restaurant, BLOCKS opened its doors to rave reviews.
Best Steakhouse in the Lake District! Yesterday, after a visit to Honister Slate Mine, we fancied a nice meal out. After much googling and head scratching, we decided to call BLOCKS Steakhouse to see if they could squeeze us in with only 30 or so minutes notice. Thankfully, they had space for us and happily booked us in. On arrival, we were warmly greeted by the happy staff and shown to our own private dining room with an open fire with a nice table for 6 already set up in anticipation of our arrival. The nice waitress took our drinks order and gave us all the menus. Whilst browsing through the incredible menu, we were brought complimentary slices of chilli and paprika bread accompanied by a herby butter, which was magnificent. We ordered 3 steaks, the fajitas and two kids' meals, each and every dish was of the highest quality. I am a bit of a steak conissur, and I can say with some degree of authority that the Fillet Steak at BLOCKS is the best Fillet Steak in the Lake District without a shadow of a doubt. I had the fillet steak with chips and peppercorn sauce. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection and had the right amount of char with a nice juicy, pink interior. The chips were perfectly cooked, and the portion size of the chips was very generous. In terms of the peppercorn sauce, the quality was of the highest standard, but the portion size for me was a little lacking as I do love peppercorn sauce, I would have happily accepted a half pint of this creamy goodness! Now we come to the dessert, which really was the cream on top of this epic feast! I had the Baileys Creme Brulee, which was accompanied with a lovely shortbread biscuits, wow! This dessert was mind shatteringly brilliant! My friend had the New York Cheesecake and by the look of his face, and judging from his comments, I would say he was satisfied. After paying the bill, just after I was telling the staff how happy I was with the experience, I was heading for the door when a waitress came around the corner and greeted me with a full body complimentary beer shower, the tray of drinks poured all over me, I managed to juggle and catch one of the gin glasses whilst soaking up the booze like a sponge, she was just as shocked as I was by this catastrophic waste of perfectly good alcohol and thankfully no one was hurt and by some kind of miracle, non of the glasses were smashed. Overall, I would say that this is my favourite Steak House in the whole of the Lake District and I expect that I will be visiting again every time I come to the lakes.
Sean T — Google review
Staying locally, not many restaurant options and we walked in by chance. Waitress was happy and attentive, clearly an asset to the place! Had a burger, wife had butterfly chicken and both were cooked perfectly, would say all components of the meal were quality produce! Excellent, well done to the team!

We went here last night (11 October 2025) for an early dinner, 5:30. We ordered the Sirloin steak and it was fabulous, tender and full of flavour, also it was cooked to perfection medium/well as requested. My husband asked for no onions or garlic but unfortunately the tomato with the steak did have onions on so that was a disappointment. A reminder to the kitchen and staff to flag up allergy and intolerance request. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We are not local but would definitely come back next time we visit the Lake District

Nice restaurant, service was great, good location and no waiting time even booked last minute & they fit us in and was so helpful with our baby. The food was nice, but not the greatest. Steak lacked some flavour & the rest was a bit bland. It was a lovely restaurant and id go again but I just personally thought my food could have been better. Both my partner & son really enjoyed their meal so it might just be me or my particular meal. I'd still go again & the service was really good so overall still an enjoyable outing.

Blocks used to be our favourite local restaurant. Inventive menu, great value, top service and reliable quality. We visited tonight and something has drastically changed since we last ate here. The service was very slow and we were lucky if we saw a staff member at half hourly intervals. The menu itself has changed in that you now have to pay for the sides you add (you used to get 2 free sides of your choice with every steak). The old menu is still available to download from the website which is very misleading. When tidying up, a waiter spilt a drink on my brother-in-law's shirt and nonchalantly said "it's ok, it's only water". They charged us £9.50 per dessert despite it saying £7.95 on one menu and £8.95 on another. Very confusing. 3 generations of our family have been loyal customers for many years but we won't be back after this. Such a shame. The people at the table next to us were getting up and walking downstairs every twenty minutes to alert the staff to various issues with their order, and someone at another table appeared to leave prior to even ordering and after consuming just half a drink. Very disappointing.
Adventurer N — Google review
Nothing like it was. We will not be returning we were sorely disappointed Firstly the menu has changed and you now no longer get a choice of sides which is why I liked this place initially for the options. Kitchen messed up the starter and made including peppers which was stated on ordering and was noted on the check they just didn't pay attention therefore long wait for my husband's starter while we had finished. Kids meals were poor for £9.95 sausage was pre chopped and dry. Also ran out of drinks we ordered. Worst part was the steak ordered sirloin, medium came out and steak was grey and grainy so many char marks on outside all you could taste was burnt. When the waitress checked back we returned the steaks. They made fresh ones which were much better but still charred tase. This took 25 mins to redo and at no point in that did we receive and update or a check back ok the table. We wanted more drinks but getting the attention of someone we tried for ages we had to go to the counter. Dessert menu loads was out of stock and my daughter's allergies sorbet and vegan ice-cream all not available. We left without dessert. For £114 for 2 adults and 2 kids honest a joke. We can get a much better meal anywhere else. We thought this place was good for a special anniversary dinner but I was sorely mistaken. Although the waitresses were nice they were all young and clearly not experienced and it massively reduced the quality and attention to service that was needed. Whatever has happened to this restaurant what a disaster. People will vote with their feet soon I'm sure. Expensive prices for poor quality food. What a shame.
Rebecca D — Google review
A lovely evening at Blocks Steakhouse, a table of 8 was served and fed very well. We had a wide range of steak and burgers which was delicious. No starters as you get 2 sides with any main. I would say that the 2 sides are such a large portion, that no one out of our group of 8 finished their plate. All steaks were £30 Burgers £17 Wine £20-£30 Pints £5 Desserts £8+ and milkshakes A great menu, but my recommend was that it was too much food and not enough room to order dessert. Some on our table decided to leave a side to allow room for a dessert. Maybe make portions smaller? But highly recommend and great service. Thank you

Was a lovely hotel. We booked the small room. The room size was fine. The shower if you are over 5 foot isn't great the ceiling is really low, but there is a bath. The food was beautiful and very lovely staff. I would definitely go back but pay extra for the bigger room
Lindsey B — Google review
We visited for a dinner. We didn't stay overnight. Frankly it was just reasonable. Partly this was because the style of food being French style with creamy sauces wouldn't be our first choice. That said everything was reasonably cooked. The garlic mushrooms were in a tasty sauce but as the mushrooms were whole they didn't absorb much sauce. The home made bread roll was tasty though. My main of wild salmon was nice and the vegetables and potatoes were pleasant. However my partners lamb was in a gravy and then a very strong small jug of mint and rosemary jus was also there. She felt the 2 sauces clashed flavour wise. If rich cooking is your thing you will enjoy it more than we did.

My wife and I and a friend recently stayed at The Manor House at Cockermouth and we believe it to have been our best overnight stay in our 2 week travel through England. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent with the food and staff of the highest order. If in the Lakes District I would recommend The Manor House as a ‘must stay’.

As the town's first coffee shop, they not only serve great coffee but also offer delicious food in a pleasant atmosphere. The cafe has spacious interiors with tall ceilings and tidy facilities, as well as outdoor seating options.
Brilliant place for breakfast with amazing value food and drink but it's also good quality! The staff are super friendly too! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

We went here for breakfast and were not disappointed. It's a lovely, light, airy building. The staff were very welcoming. The food was amazing. We both had Avocado Stack, vegetarian option, which came with sliced grilled tomatoes instead of bacon. They also had caramelised onion on the bottom and poached eggs on the top. Very delicious 😋 Coffee was good too.

Had breakfast here just as the restrictions on the pandemic lightened. It's a lovely place big tall ceilings inside very neat and tidy, staff are lovely, breakfast was great and came with a coffee however the coffee was not very strong at all but maybe I'm just used to Greg's now lol. Facilities clean and plenty not just 1 cubicle which I think is important. Some outside seating as well if you want to look at Sainsbury's and chug in some traffic light intersection smoke. We would come back my parents live in cockermouth so plenty opportunity. Thanks again. ☕🍽️🥪🥨🍳🥓

Fantastic breakfast! The queue for tables moved fairly quickly with good Covid-19 practices being implemented by staff. Staff were really friendly and polite. There's not many places you go these days that substitute your unwanted items in a full English, so being mushroom free and an extra rasher of bacon up I was a happy man. Perfect strong coffee to get you set for a day adventuring around in the lakes. The food was perfect with both me and my partner both being very impressed. You could have paid double and not grumbled at the food. We will definitely be visiting again next time we are around Cockermouth! Many thanks for such a great start to the morning

The Jennings Brewery Shop and Tour is a must-visit attraction in Cockermouth, offering a unique experience for tourists. Visitors can explore the rich history of the brewery, which dates back to 1828 when it was founded by John Jennings. The brewery offers regular public tours where guests can learn about the beer-making process and even enjoy tastings of their locally brewed beer.
This brewery has only recently been reopened and it's fabulous well worth a visit. The tap room has plenty of indoor space, a well stocked bar at reasonable prices and an outside seating area, overlooking the river.
Paul M — Google review
Excellent! Great ambience, fabulous beers, real homely feel with friendly knowledgeable staff. I was over the moon when I heard that the brewery had been bought and especially that the fabulous Cumberland Ale was coming home. Visited today. Absolutely delighted to enjoy a couple of pints of Cumberland Ale for the first time in way too long. Even better than I remembered, but then I was in the brewery tap! Thank you Rebecca and Kurt for bringing Jennings home. Wishing you all every success in the venture!!

Nice tap room and great beers. We sat outside with great view of river.
Malcolm K — Google review
The brewery tour around the old facilities was great - Phil our guide was knowledgeable and easy to hear. The tour doesn’t focus on the new brewing facilities which are 1/16th the size of the old ones. Would have been good to have had a small tasting and overview of the different beers on offer - maybe something for the future? There was only one bottled beer available to exchange for tokens which was a shame for those not staying to drink the draught options.

Easily the best gallery in the region in terms of the quality of work they have on offer often far superior to any of the local museums. Everyone who works here seems charming, enthusiastic and well informed if you have an interest in art and are in the region it is an absolute must see.

Excellent gallery with knowledgeable owners who are happy to discuss the art works and provide information about the artists. They also keen that the experience is positive from the moment you see the work you like right up to the moment you decide to purchase. Would definitely recommend a visit!

This is an outstanding gallery. Cockermouth is, admittedly, off the beaten track but if you can face an extra few miles from the usual Lakeland hotspots, it's a lovely place to visit. There are excellent independent shops but the best feature of the town is the Castlegate gallery. There is always a thoughtful and inspiring range of artists' work on show.

Market Place Print Studio is a vibrant hub for creativity, offering an array of art workshops that cater to all skill levels, from novices to seasoned artists. Here, you can dive into the world of printmaking with techniques like lino-cutting and etching. The studio not only provides engaging classes but also showcases a delightful selection of handmade printed cards, artworks, and unique gifts crafted on-site.
This place really is special. I attended two workshops; one was a beginners course for etching and the other was a botanical printing session. Both were really interesting, informative and just fun! Jack really took care of us and was very patient and attentive. I also attended a few ‘draw and drink’ events which I really enjoyed. Jack and Emily created a relaxed, safe and playful atmosphere and I had the chance to meet other people who I might not have otherwise. They foster a sense of community by bringing people together from different walks of life which I always appreciated. If you fancy a new artistic venture and want to feel part of something, then I could not recommend this studio enough. Long may it prosper xoxo

A brilliant addition to Cockermouth, we did a lino cut workshop which was a great way to spend a day. Jack is hugely knowledgeable and skilled with printing and he helped people without an artistic bone produce some amazing prints. Thoroughly recommended!
Joe H — Google review
The three of us started the day pretty clueless about linocut but we walked out pretty chuffed with our prints (of Jimi Hendrix; a dahlia; and winter ivy, if you’re wondering). It is a lovely workspace and Jack is a great and helpful teacher. We have no hesitation in recommending the Print Studio, a fantastic addition to the town! Well done to Jack and Emily. Thanks from Denise, Andy and (another) Jack.

I did the first one day introduction to etching course with Jack at the studio, it was a very informative and hands on course, during which I learnt about all the different types of printing and went through the whole process of etching and was very pleased with my first etches! Jack is an excellent tutor and delivers the course in a friendly and relaxed manner, I enjoyed it immensely!
Paul C — Google review
What a lovely place to learn new skills! Lots of different techniques on offer. I really enjoyed the tetrapack printing. Cockermouth is so lucky to have a large printing press which you can use by arrangement. Well done Emily and Jack!
Hanneke S — Google review
Introduction to Linocut and Reduction Linocut over 2 days, in a gem of a 'real artist's studio'! Jack gently nudges you along, mindful of the process more than the outcome, which of course turns out to be much better that you had hoped for. He builds confidence in your own judgement and 'embrace the outcome'. Makes a novice feels like a real artist. Highly recommended.

Gallery Artemis is a remarkable art gallery in the Lake District that offers both exhibition and display spaces for various artists. It not only showcases fine art, sculpture, and ceramics but also sells contemporary furniture and jewelry. What sets this gallery apart is its focus on contemporary design and art, making it highly accessible, visually appealing, and intellectually stimulating. It offers a unique selection of unusual gifts alongside its impressive collection.
I love Gallery Artemis is such as wonderful reflective space to enjoy the work of local artists- the gallery owner Yvette has made the space so inviting I didn't want to leave so I am now moving my work office upstairs and creating a new Stitch Studio. It is in my view the best gallery in Cockermouth as the exhibitions are balanced beautifully between commercial fine and applied art and the freshness of contemporary approaches. I feel this is well worth coming to Cockermouth for !

This is a wonderful gallery with both an exhibition space for a variety of artists, and a display space for their own artists. They sell jewellery and contemporary furniture in addition to sculpture and ceramics. There is always something unusual for gifts in addition to fine art. There is no gallery quite like this in the Lake District specialising in contemporary design and art, but is highly accessible, attractive and thought provoking. I am a big fan and love a wander. Well worth making the visit to cockermouth.

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Alternative Takeaway, and I must say, it was a delightful surprise! From the moment I placed my order, everything went smoothly. Their menu is refreshingly diverse, offering options that go beyond your standard takeaway fare. The food bursts with flavor and is clearly crafted from fresh ingredients with great attention to detail. I savored their lamb kofta paired with fries—absolutely delicious!
Delicious halal food in budget friendly restaurant! And they’re very friendly and supportive I highly recommend them for Muslim community traveler’s in amber side and lake district

I recently tried a takeaway for chicken wings and chicken kebab, and it was absolutely disgusting. The wings were served with such an unhygienic mess that I couldn't even eat them. It was like they had been sitting out for hours, and it was clear that they didnt change the oil for weeks. I'm seriously disappointed because I expected better from a takeaway. And chicken kebab was just boiled and served with pizza sauce which immediately made me vomit. If you're looking for chicken wings, this place is definitely not the way to go.
Manish S — Google review
Ordered from here a couple of times now, when i had no other option really. Pizzas are ok, alot of sauce though, Takes alot of the taste. ( probably nice when your drunk) Chicken is a no no, its like boiled and slightly fried and squishy. And my last straw was the “salad box”..£3.50! For abit of lettuce, a tiny amount of red cabbage, a small tomato and a soggy chilli. (Photos for size comparion). Will not be ordered from here again, gave it a chance and just did not meet any kind of exspectation

Recently tried Alternative Takeaway, and I’m honestly blown away. From the moment I placed my order, everything was flawless. The menu offers such a great variety — not your typical takeaway, and that’s what makes it stand out. The food was packed with flavor, clearly made with fresh ingredients and a lot of care. I had the lamb kofta with fries , and it was delicious. Staff were friendly, the service was quick, and everything arrived piping hot. Will definitely be ordering again soon.
Jonny W — Google review
Avoid this place like the plague. The food is absolutely vile, nasty, greasy slop that tastes like it’s been scraped out of a bin. Calling it a “takeaway” is a joke, it’s more like a punishment. Staff are rancid. They try to charge extra and when I called out they turn abusive. It’s not just bad service, it’s intimidation. This place is a disgrace to Cockermouth. Overpriced rubbish, disgusting food, and staff who think bullying customers is acceptable. If you value your money, your sanity, or your stomach, stay well away from Alternative Takeaway. It’s not an alternative, it’s an absolute disgrace.

Ordered takeaway away. Our dip which we payed for was missing. Didn't bother to bring it back when we requested. Food is super average. Fried chicken is soaked in oil. Mixed house special meat was not seasoned at all. Disappointed!

worst kebab i've ever had, who makes a kebab and separates all the ingredients for you to make it yourself? Dry chicken in a stale pitta, whole things was dry and not very nice. Really fancied a chicken kebab and this was -1/10 and now i'm in a bad mood because I wasted my time and money.

Outstanding experience! Excellent quality food, warm and friendly service from the staff. Already looking forward to our next visit! My friend had the fish cakes & chips, packed with fish and really tasty, and he's from South Shields! I had the double cheeseburger. Quite simply, THEE best quality meat in the burgers I've ever had. Homecut chips were very tasty as well. The prices were very reasonable considering the quality and portions. Cannot recommend this establishment any higher. Visit, you must.

Good food and service. Would have liked a little more steak in the pasta. Seafood pasta was packed.

We've had a few meals here now, its definitely been better. The starter and mains were fantastic, dessert was so so, but the service let it down. Pur tsble was never checked so we were never asked if we wanted more drinks despite empty glasses, we waited a good 30 minutes for dessert to arrive, to the point we thought they'd forgotten about us. Like I say the food was great, portion size could be considered small for the price but its tastey so to me its about right. Tweak the service and its where it needs to be.

Having arrived in Cockermouth in the early evening and finding it a struggle to find somewhere open and serving food, we discovered this gem of a restaurant in the town centre. Once we found our way in (along the side of the river with gorgeous hanging baskets of flowers!) we had a fabulous meal served by friendly and helpful staff. Don’t be put off if it’s very quiet - the food was fresh and homemade, service was prompt and attentive and the coffee was excellent, too! Thank you so much to the team at the Honest Lawyer for restoring us after a very long journey.

Two of dined here on a girls night as an end of holiday treat. The staff were so friendly and helpful, it made a special end to our relaxing holiday. All 3 courses were delicious. The sticky toffee pudding was "to die for" and the Sancere white wine was very nice 👌 😀. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Booked here while staying in area as only local restaurant with availability. Starters were ok, I ordered the pate thought and it was very bland. I ate all the chutney just to get some sort of flavour. I had lamb for my mains and the gravy was thin and heavily flavoured. My husband had the Highland burger for his mains. No haggis included as described. His chips were very overdone and he couldn't eat them. No wait staff checked on our meal..had to ask twice for sauces etc. Told senior staff who collected our plates about the chips and she said "oh yeah they do look burnt". Bill came and no apology or discount applied. We've had much better service and food for the price elsewhere. It could be better with a few tweaks.

We booked late and got in for 6.30 pm. The menu we chose was the Bistro one with 3 courses for £20. 2 courses for £18. I had the aubergine stack as a starter followed by a lentil dish with veg. Both very nice but slightly smaller portions than I eat at home. The triple choc brownie with jersey ice cream was a delightful way to finish off. Karen had the chicken liver pate followed by wild mushroom tagliatelle and topped with the same pudding. All tasty and good service. With a can of Guinness and a tip came to £48. Nice atmosphere. I just need to have an apple before I eat here next time. 😁 By the way the a la carte menu looked good and bigger portions so we know what to do next time!

Undoubtedly the best coffee in all of Cumbria. Only here did I get hooked on drip coffee. It’s like red wine on an autumn evening or whiskey in the warm company of your best friends. First, you sense the aroma, then the taste, and only then the aftertaste, with all the shades of the bouquet coming alive. This is what I’m writing about for coffee at Moon. Every time feels like the first time. I’ll order another cup.

We stayed in Cockermouth for a few days in August and this coffee shop became my 'local' while I was there. It is possible to sit in and there is plenty of seating both inside and out. It has a range of pastry / breakfast options but I had takeaway while out for a couple of morning walks. I was struck by what a friendly place it was. There were always a number of locals there and there was lots of discussion between the and the people serving. A really welcoming atmosphere. Then there was the coffee which was fantastic. I had a flat white which is my usual. I am quite fussy and generally struggle to find a decent coffee outside of London. This was up there. Properly made and delicious. Thoroughly recommend.

Tiny coffee shop but was told its the best in Cockermouth. It probably is, but we had better coffee elsewhere in the lakes. We are 'coffee snobs' and we usually sniff out small indie coffee shops, and the moon & sixpence defo has that vibe. We stopped in twice, so definitely not saying the coffee is bad, just being realistic about our expectations based on previous reviews. We took a slice of vegan cake which was very nice and I also bought a bag of locally roasted beans which I love to do. They were very very busy, so not the most relaxed smiley environment, as experienced elsewhere. Look forward to cracking open my beans :-)

Perfectly balanced speciality coffee + a very friendly chat with Steven about other great cafe's/local places to visit. Oh and the vegan lemon drizzle cake was the most deliciously moist vegan cake we have ever had 😍 These pictures don't do it any justice but hopefully give you an idea of the quality coffee and cakes on offer.
