Malcesine in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Malcesine, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Malcesine is a picturesque town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, known for its medieval Scaliger Castle perched dramatically above the water. Its narrow stone lanes, small harbors, and lakeside promenades offer classic northern Italian atmosphere with mountain and lake views. A cable car from Malcesine takes you up to Monte Baldo, a popular spot for hiking, paragliding, and panoramic vistas over Lake Garda. The town also serves as a base for sailing, windsurfing, and exploring other villages around the lake.
With favorites like Osteria Casa Italia, Ristorante Paradiso Perduto, and Al Gondoliere, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ristorante Buongiorno Buonasera and Osteria Casa Italia so you can get the best taste of Malcesine while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Castle of Malcesine is a medieval fortress located in the picturesque town of Malcesine, Italy. It was built by the powerful Scaligero family from Verona and offers panoramic views of Lake Garda from its tall tower, which dominates the town from a rocky outcrop. The castle also houses a history and natural science museum.
Went here during the week, we bought tickets in advance so had no wait time to get entry. The best piece of this place is the views from the castle out to the lake and surrounding areas and offers some really good photo opportunities especially given the low ticket price. You need to go to the top of the tower but the space does get tighter the higher up you go so expect to wait for people to come down and go up etc. Would go here again.
Random U — Google review
It is a piece of history and worth a visit just for the view from the tower. There are special exhibitions in the castles main hall. When I was there, it was chanting mother's = video and sound playing mother's from different ethnicity singing lullabies to their babies, quite beautiful. From the tower, you'll get an awesome view of Malcesine and the surrounding areas, including the Garda Lake.
Stefan N — Google review
Castello Scaligero di Malcesine is absolutely fantastic and what a superb attraction and place to visit for only just €7.00 per adult. This castle despite from the outside giving the perception of being small, is actually quite spacious once inside with plenty of different levels, rooms, towers and garden areas to explore. Given its age, it is well preserved and its history is very well charted and presented as you work your way through the castle. The information is presented in several languages and incredibly well done as it gets all the key information over without drowning you in extensive detail. This is a spectacular building setting out the historic challenges between Milan and the Venetians. The History of Lake Garda and Malcesine is also documented throughout the different displays. As you’d imagine given its location, the views from the castle and especially the top of the main tower are just great. 360 degree views of the Italian Alps, Malcesine and Lake Garda are there to be enjoyed. It would be criminal to come to Malcesine and not visit Castello Scaligero di Malcesine…. This place is an absolute must and you need to allow circa 2 hours to explore.
John G — Google review
Beautiful views from here over the lake! You can explore all the terraces and climb up the tower but there is not really much to see on the inside apart from an art installation when we were there. Worth a visit though!
Jana G — Google review
The castle is definitely worth a visit. From the top, you get a breathtaking view over the lake—absolutely stunning and perfect for photos. A great spot to explore history and enjoy the scenery at the same time.
Jiawei C — Google review
Nicely renovated structures of the castle, pricing a look into the history with differing ownership over the centuries. The view on from the tower into the rooftops of Malcesine and the coastline is spectacular.
Gundekar B — Google review
One of the larger castles to visit. It is still a castle that is in ruin amd is mostly outdoors. Great views and the old town around the area is fun to wander around.
Ryanna H — Google review
This castle is absolutely breathtaking and it is very much worth visiting! Not only does it have a cool museum, but the views on this castle are absolutely gorgeous! Come here and watch the beautiful views over lake garda!

La Pace is an Italian restaurant in Malcesine that serves seafood, pasta, and a house limoncello. It is located on a cobbled square by Lake Garda and has stunning views of the lake. The pizzas are good value and come quickly, while the service is friendly and helpful. The cover charge for food is low at 1.50 euro, making it a popular place to have lunch.
This spot is special. Direct view to the lake Garda. Staff is very friendly and helpful. They correspond in Italien, German and English and maybe some other languages:). We were very happy here. Meals are from fish to noodles over pizza, what ever your heart prefers, they serve fresh and delicious. We had a bottle of local wine and as desert they served us a big bottle of grappa “at house” 😋 thanks so much. We had a delicious and pleasant evening and we will definitely come back soon.
Richard S — Google review
The food is very well presented, however I was disappointed by the taste of the truffle tagliatele with porcini. The truffle flavor is not there and the mushroom sauce does not have a good consistency. Overall the pasta tasted blunt. My family said the fish and lasgna was good thus 4, I would not reccomend the truffle pasta here. The staff is friendly and helpful
Alba M — Google review
The food was good, but pizza had a strange dough that I didn't really like—it didn’t taste like traditional pizza dough to me. The service was okay, but we had to wait 20 minutes to pay, even after asking several times. The restaurant definitely needs more employees. Overall, the atmosphere was great! 💓
Nina B — Google review
Unfortunately, we didn’t have the best experience here. We ordered drinks first and planned to order food afterward — only to be told they weren’t serving pizza that day, even though there’s a full pizza section on the menu. The pasta we chose instead lacked flavor, even the truffle pasta, and to make matters worse, one of the dishes had a hair in it. The plates also came out smudged, which didn’t add to the experience. While the staff did remove that dish from the bill, there was no apology. Overall, the service felt rather unfriendly. Anything positive? The view was nice, the Aperol was good, and they offered free Limoncello. Still, it didn’t make up for the overall bad value for money. Note: there’s a €3 table charge per person, and the bathrooms are located in a different building.
Danina L — Google review
Overall the environment was normal. The pizza was just average, the price is above average but the size and quality of the product does not match the price. The service was also in the middle.
Александр М — Google review
The only thing that was a little bit inconvenient was, that they didn't serve pizza that day. We were a bit disappointed cause we had been looking forward to it and this restaurant has always been the first to visit when we're in Malcesine. Hopefully next time again. Other than that also the pasta is absolutely worth trying. And the view on the lake is just gorgeous.
Nicole B — Google review
Would give more stars if I could. Everything we had was incredible.. the caprese salad, pasta with pistachio pesto and guinciale, and the lamb chops with potatoes. Easily got a reservation on Saturday night last minute but it was packed and every table was full. Great service, great vibes, right on the water and left completely satisfied for such a fair price. Would highly recommend this spot to anyone.
Amelia — Google review
We love this place. The location is just beautiful especially in the evening with the view on the lake. Every time we come we receive a warm welcome and top food. The owners and waiters are super friendly and attentive. When we did not reserve a table once, we got a prosecco to shorten our waiting time. My favorite dish is the tuna steak in pistachio crust or spaghetti scampi. But also all the other dishes are excellent. With our bill we got a delicious bottle of limoncello that we could serve ourselves. We will definitely come back, when we are in Malcesine!

Al Gondoliere is a charming Italian restaurant located in the heart of Malcesine at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. The venue boasts an attractive old-world architecture and intimate open balcony seating, creating a romantic ambiance for diners. Specializing in Mediterranean seafood dishes, the restaurant offers delectable options such as seafood fritters and pasta ragu.
We had dinner at this restaurant and it was simply perfect! The waiters, Mohammed and Nadir, made the experience truly special – very friendly, professional, and always helpful. Their service really completed the whole evening. The food was excellent – just like in the pictures. The fish was especially flavorful, and both the starter and the dessert were absolutely delicious. The location is quiet and stylish – perfect for a date or an elegant dinner. We’ll definitely be coming back – it’s saved in our list!

The beef fillet was sooooo good! Sliced through it like butter. It was juicy and had a tint of a burn, like it came grilled from a flame. The permezan addition with mushroom sauce & vegetables was amazing too. We got a nice limoncello at the end! 10/10 dinner experience.
Joelle V — Google review
Food was very good—tortelloni, in fact, was fantastic. Side dish on the trota salmonata ? Far too salty. Service? Slow, and they even charged me for a drink that never arrived. Sloppy. In a town like Malcesine, full of brilliant options and proper kitchens, you can’t afford mistakes like that. Plenty of places here will give you great food and get the basics right.

We had a lovely meal at Al Gondoliere. The olives served as a starter were excellent – full of flavor. The burrata was good, and the prawn pasta was absolutely outstanding – definitely the highlight of the afternoon. The tiramisu was nice, and the crème brûlée was decent. Overall, a very enjoyable experience!

Came in for a quick lunch. We shared the grilled sea bass and it has remained one of our favourite meals in lake Garda. Highly recommend this beautiful plate of fish!
Leanne S — Google review
Al Gondoliere has a lovely, warm atmosphere on its terrace. We came here as a group of 3 and really enjoyed the meals we had, I would really reccomend the roasted octopus on a bed of creamed peas, orata or branzino alla griglia and lastly, my favorite, the seafood spaghetti! Very delicious and good for couples and groups up till 6!

We discovered this restaurant by coincidence on our way back from Limone and decided to stop for some grilled fish. From the moment we arrived, it felt like home—the owner, Mohammad, personally served us. The fish was amazing, and so were the service and atmosphere! Thank you, Mohammad. We’ll definitely come back again.

In my opinion this is one of the best places to eat in town! We’ve been there two times during our stay and the food was always amazing! The location is very nice and the staff is welcoming and friendly. The ingredients, especially the fish, were extremely fresh! Delicious food and nice vibe. I definitely recommend

Restaurant
Ristorante Buongiorno Buonasera is a newly renovated restaurant with a comfortable atmosphere, offering traditional Italian dishes. Despite some mixed reviews about the service, many visitors have praised the friendly staff and efficient service. The restaurant is known for its delicious pizza, especially the gluten-free option, which received mixed feedback. Guests also enjoyed other menu items such as vitello tonnato and Tagliatelle alla cinghiale.
We thought it was so good we came back again! We never do that on holiday but I had to have the veal pasta again - was so delicious! They also have the best tiramisu in Malcesine. The servers are lovely and the food is great. Would definitely recommend 👍🏻

Please ignore any bad review of this place! We have been to Malcesine twice in the past 3 years! We have eaten here both times and the pizza is the best that we have had from anywhere across Italy! The staff are very friendly and accommodating! We asked for a table for 2 and they made one available for us within 5 minutes on a busy Saturday night. Very reasonable prices and a great atmosphere on the square. 10/10 from my wife and I!

Food was very good. Also good for glutenfree, but 3 euro extra. We were treated differently then other guests, no bread, no limmoncello after the bill while other did get that. Leaves a bad taste
Sloeber R — Google review
We got a recommendation by our bike rental guy and decided to try it out. Similar to other places in Italy we went to this year also this restaurant seems to have problems with it's service. I figured there are two different qualities of employees, those who keep ignoring you and who try to look away so that they don't need to get bothered by you, not very friendly - and the ones who are then solving your problems or at least trying to. This place also has both of them. We ordered Radler, got beer, and then needed 3 tries with different waiters to get them to our table to explain what was wrong. In the end the food turned out to be quite good, especially the gourmet pizza with burrata and ham was delicious. At the end we were told we actually get 10 % off because we stayed at the connected hotel. Haha if somebody of the hotel would have told us we might would have eaten there more often. Also nobody told us about the nice rooftop terrace where you can also eat but the bike rental guy. So please, this place has great potential, advertise it better with your guests so they know about the perks :)
Gerald P — Google review
Newly renovated Restaurant with comfortable atmosphere but guests preferably sit outside. Started traditionally with vitello tonnato which was quite good, followed by Tagliatelle alla cinghiale (wild pig) and Pizza capricciosa - acompagnied with classical Sprizz (Aperol & Prosecco). Late dining wasn't a problem
Michael B — Google review
The interior might be better but a cuisine is good, especially I didn’t expect so good salad here. There’s no WiFi and parking. Staff was always busy and I have to wait them more than it’s usually needed.

A great place to eat with friendly service, stunning views of Ponte Vecchio and a great choice of Italian dishes. The food is excellent, with a wide range of options to choose from. Located on the lakefront, it's the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or family gathering.
Reserved a table and had the lake front view completely uninterrupted. Beautiful. Food was lovely, wine suggestions great and the multilingual staff were equally impressive and attentive. Wonderful evening and no where near as expensive as expected

Amazing place with great customer service. The lasagna doesn’t look appetizing on the photo but it was absolutely delicious 💯👌🏻 the limoncello spritz is a must try as well if you are a fan of limoncello.
Nikol S — Google review
The staff is really polite and friendly, and has a relaxed way of handling the customers even when it is extremely busy. They serve some excellent fish dishes, and the white wine we got was really good and also recommended by the head waiter. The service was very quick even though they were quite busy. For the price, the food and wine were very good. Excellent location with a view of the water and suitable for a long evening having some good wine and watching the sunset.
Stefan N — Google review
Lovely restaurant right at the lake side. Friendly service as you can see from image. Gave us good advice re food. The gnocchi with sardines was indeed spicy but also tasty. A bit more expensive than other restaurants in the area I would say. A lovely free lemoncello to finish the meal was included.
Elizabeth D — Google review
We did like this place, spent here 3 evenings in a row as it was delicious, atmosphere was very friendly and funny.
Natallia S — Google review
We had bad experience with this place. The waiter was annoying and inappropriately invited passersby in. The worst thing was paying, when we gave the waiter a tip even after this experience, he still entered the wrong amount into the terminal and purposefully robbed us of 4 euros. This experience has never happened to me and I strongly do not recommend the restaurant, even it was at good location…
Marek V — Google review
We didn’t dine here but wished we had. We went next door!! But I took time to watch the food and the service. It was beyond amazing. Such a friendly and attentive service team. Something to be praised highly for. We will definitely choose here next time over its nearby competitors So sad we didn’t eat here
Jayne B — Google review
Awful food!! Had the three fish meal for lunch, and my wife had the spaghetti! This is a true tourist trap. If you ever see people outfront trying to convince you to eat at a place, just run away! Also they scam you for potato side dish and will charge you 7$ for it along with a sit down fee of 5 or 6 euros.

Ristorante Paradiso Perduto is a charming restaurant located near the castle, offering breathtaking sunset views and a delightful ambiance. Diners recommend making reservations for a beautiful spot with an unobstructed view. The food, including appetizers and main courses served on slate plates, is described as simply delicious and reasonably priced. Visitors praise the attentive service and suggest heading to the top terrace for the best views.
The food here was fantastic. We both chose relatively simple pasta dishes for a May lunch, but they were flavorful, well-prepared, and exceeded our expectations. Beautifully presented, too. The setting on the terrace was stunning, surrounded by lush greenery with glimpses of Lake Garda in the background. Everything was great, although the staff did seem a little rushed. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting this beautiful area

Very nice food. Better than fine-dining. Service by young male was spectacular. He knows his stuff and you can see that spark in his eyes when you ask something about ingridients etc. Very pro!

Has a rooftop terrace but we preferred to sit in the downstairs area next to the bar. Quieter but do have to deal with more cigarette smoke from people smoking right outside the restaurant. Food is fantastic!

This is a beautiful place located up by the castello in Malcesine. The staff was very friendly and professional and the food was absolutely delicious. We had the salmon and tuna tartare starters and can also recommend the tagliatelle with fish ragout and the specialty of the house. But the highlight of our visit was the view from the terrace area on to the lake. A very romatic spot to enjoy your meal with some excellent wines as well! Would definitely visit again!

This has to be the best restaurant in Melcesine. The setting is beautiful, the food is delicious but the service is outstanding. The servers are friendly and switch between the various customer languages without missing a beat, all while juggling orders. A word of advice though, be sure to reserve to avoid disappointment!
Ian W — Google review
We had a great experience, at this lovely place after seeing the castle and all lake garda from above. The service was top and the waitress gave us more recommendations about things to do around, the tagliatelle bolognese was great and we especially loved the truffle tagliatelle goes amazing with glass of local white, we finished with trentino limoncello! Molto bene!

Great drink and food in a lovely location with friendly and polite waiters. The waiting staff were polite and attentive with a lovely smile and the food arrived shortly after ordering. We ordered the house wine which was perfectly nice to drink. The whole meal was reasonably priced for the area and the food was delicious. My only slight criticism was that my duck pasta was a bit too salty for my liking, and my husband agreed that they were maybe a bit heavy handed with the salt. However, the flavours and textures were great. Can highly recommend this place.
