Nature & Wildlife Areas
Hertfordshire Zoo, formerly known as Paradise Wildlife Park, is a popular family destination with over 400 animals and various attractions such as a soft play area and petting zoo. The park is committed to conservation and education, conducting vital projects both locally and globally. Visitors can book unique animal experiences, including feeding big cats or interacting with exotic species. Situated in the expansive Broxbourne Woods, the zoo offers over 30 different pre-booked animal encounters.
Another great day out, there was plenty to see and do. All the animals looked well cared for and fed. It was amazing how close you felt you were to some of animals. Including the lions and the sun bear. The glass so clean it was like it wasn't there. The shops were responsibly priced and depending on your budget they had plenty to choose from. The food was nice and was a generous portion. Overall we had an amazing day would I would happily return.
Asslinn A — Google review
The road to the zoo is a bit narrow and winding, and driving with the steering wheel on the opposite side made it even more unusual. This is a truly small family-oriented zoo with an interesting selection of animals. Everything was clean and well maintained, and we enjoyed the visit. I was especially excited to see capybaras and meerkats. Personally, it was also fascinating to observe the visitors — many families with two or more children. The food was decent, but because of the strong wind and too many wasps outside, the experience was mixed. Overall, it’s a great place to spend a day with family.
DNK — Google review
Visited for my daughter’s birthday and it was great all round. The entire place is very well designed and in good condition. We tried food at a few of the outlets and all were good quality tasting food - not amazing but not the typical greasy nonsense you get. It’s good that you can walk around each area multiple times and in different directions so you really feel like you get the most out of your ticket. Price wise was good, about average and like I said there is plenty to do when inside. All the animals we saw looked happy, no concerns there.
Ryan P — Google review
A brilliant zoo, I would say one of the best we have visited. It was busy but we didn't feel it, its nicely spread out so you never feel crowded, it was also very clean and tidy. The staff were fantastic, even when doing something they were happy to answer questions on animals, they were all happy, friendly and genuinely seemed to enjoy being there. The animals all seemed happy and healthy with a lovely variety. As with all zoos it would be nice to see them with more space. The food was of excellent quality and reasonably priced. Nice to have the mix of animals, the dino trail and parks too. It is 3.5hours away from us but worth every minute in the car. Would 100% recommend
G. G — Google review
Great zoo, loved the red panda experience, keeper was very friendly and informative in answering any questions I had. Loved getting to see the two red pandas being introduced to each other. Got good views of the animals, some of the viewing windows were quite wet with condensation which blocked views but not much to be done about that. Lots of kids so was quite noisy but think I came in the school holidays. Only negative was one of the jaguars was pacing around a lot in its enclosure, hopefully it was just waiting for food or something like that and not stressed. Got Uber easily to/from the train station. Staff were all friendly and helpful.
Erin — Google review
A really good day out. I went with my sister and my two teenagers and we all thoroughly enjoyed our day. The theming, informative signs, viewing areas/platforms and eateries were very good. Of course the wonderful animals were the highlight and I can recommend attending the bird show! At the end of the day we even had a train ride around the dinosaur area for £2 each, which ended the day nicely.
Natalie M — Google review
A family favourite. My son was two when we went and he loved the dinosaurs section even though I was worried he was too young, there are some bits that are slightly gruesomely but you can quickly go past them. It’s good fun and you can then go to the zoo and look at the animals. It’s very well organised and clean. Limited option for food and as with any of these venues, it’s overpriced for the quality you get.
Tina S — Google review
Hertfordshire Zoo is a fantastic family-friendly destination with a great variety of animals and interactive zones. The enclosures are well maintained , highlights include the lions, camels, and alpacas, all easy to view up close. The “World of Animals” and “Tumble Jungle” soft play area add extra fun for kids, with clearly scheduled play sessions. The zoo is clean, well signposted, and offers a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. A perfect day out for families with young children!

The Lee Valley White Water Centre is a great place to go rafting, canoeing and kayaking, as well as having a range of other activities like disc golf and water Wipeout. The venue is well-maintained and offers plenty of opportunity for fun in all weather conditions.
Absolutely everlasting experience! Jackie was amazing on our river raft boat, did some crazy stunts and kept us on the edge and entertained! Will definitely visit again with my family.

Lee Valley White Water Centre is an absolutely fantastic destination for water adventure lovers! We went for white water rafting, and the experience was thrilling from start to finish. The staff are well-trained, friendly, and make sure everyone stays safe while having fun. They also offer great membership options for regular users – perfect if you’re planning to go often. We noticed some excellent offers for families and friends, making it more affordable to enjoy as a group. It’s also a brilliant place to celebrate birthday parties, especially for teens or adults who love an adrenaline rush. The facilities are clean, well-organised, and there’s even a nice café on-site for relaxing after your adventure. Highly recommended for a fun-filled and energetic day out! 💦🚣‍♂️
Rakeshkumar P — Google review
Jordan was great. Parking easy. Open gendered changing rooms with showers. Also had a mirror and hairdryer which was nice. Lockers were easy to use. Had a group of 9 for the whole raft, unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you see it, one person at the helm doesn’t paddle. This position can rotate between within your group, which might be a good thing, so you can take a break because this was a tiring activity for sure. Great fun though!
Thinh D — Google review
This sports venue is truly delightful. It’s such a pleasure to watch the determination of those battling the powerful water and waves, whether in team boats or individual kayaks. I genuinely enjoy the atmosphere here, and I try to visit once or twice a week. The café adds to the charm—coffee on cold days and beer on warm ones. Altogether, it’s an outstanding place with an incredible vibe

Fantastic facility, make time for coffee or food on the terrace because it's lovely. As described on the website, great fun white water rafting. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a thrill!
S Q — Google review
Fantastic place to practice your open water and white water rafting skills there is an equipment hire area on site so you dont need to bring your own gear, ample parking the largest car park is just 100 yards from the entrance. Staff are super friendly, there is a cafe on site too with inside or outside (on balcony) seating. The road leading to the place is only a normal 30 mph road and it gets busy quickly so try and give yourself plenty of time to get there.

Amazing facilities. Second time Ive done the rafting which is great. Shaun was a top instructor Can't wait to go back Very clean and tidy highly recommend

I went white water rafting with 7 mates for a birthday. An excellent experience, we loved it. Ask for Sean as your instructor he made it a 5/5 experience. We did 6 runs on the Olympic course and Sean upped the ante each time. Would highly recommend it!

If you're looking for a delightful family outing, Lee Valley Animal Adventure Park is the perfect destination! Nestled in Waltham Abbey, Essex, this park offers city kids a unique chance to connect with both farm and exotic animals. Imagine spending the day meeting friendly farmyard creatures alongside fascinating meerkats and even reindeer! After enjoying animal encounters, children can unleash their energy at the Alpine Adventure area, where they can zoom down thrilling toboggan runs or bounce around on doughnuts.
Great day out with my friends and young kids, very reasonably priced (entry/ice cream etc) - just enough to keep the kids entertained and not feeling overwhelmed (inc us parents!). Competitive local zoo/farms are double the price and makes you then feel obliged to do every part of it! My kids loved the climbing frame & sand pit & free fair rides. The walk with Wallabies was a great experience too, the member of staff on duty 30/5 (Amelia I think?!) was so attentive with my daughter & great member of staff! Will be back soon! Would only recommend visiting on a dry or warm day .

Lee Valley Animal Adventure Park was an absolute joy to visit. From the moment we arrived, the experience was delightful and engaging. There were loads of animals to see, providing an excellent opportunity for my three boys, who are of varying ages, to enjoy and learn. Each of them found something exciting and captivating, thanks to the diverse range of activities available on site. The park also offers good refreshments and food, ensuring that we stayed energised throughout our visit. Additionally, the staff were welcoming and friendly, which really enhanced our experience, making us feel right at home. There were plenty of play areas, which kept the boys busy and entertained for hours, allowing us to relax and enjoy the surroundings. In summary, Lee Valley Animal Adventure Park is definitely worth a visit, offering a fantastic day out for families.

We went for the oz event with kids ranging from toddler to teen and it proved to be a good option with plenty to keep everyone busy. Enjoyed a picnic in the sun, played mini golf and bounced on the giant pillow before the heavens opened and we dashed for cover in the big top tent. Despite concerns about animal welfare from a previous post, all the animals we saw seemed well cared for.
Lisa D — Google review
Highly recommend it! Amazing place with so many activities for the little ones. We loved the Foam Party and the Barn Theater. There is a variety of animals for children to see as well such rabbits, wallabies, meerkat, pony, pigs, guinea pigs, tortoises, goats etc. We enjoyed the food at the cafe as well. Really liked their jacket potatoe. We will be back!
Ertina D — Google review
We had such a fun day out at Lee Valley Farm! There was so much to do – from rides and mini golf to meeting princesses and pirates, sand pit, wallaby enclosure plus a super fun foam party. The kids especially enjoyed the bugs encounter and getting to feed the goats and meerkats – such a special experience! There’s something for everyone, and my two absolutely loved it. A fantastic family day out that we’ll definitely remember. 🐐🦜✨

It was nice to visit on a sunny day. I particularly liked seeing the wallabies hopping about in their enclosure. I counted 9. They also have tortoises, meerkats, pigs, rats, goats, turkeys, rabbits. A meerkat themed mini golf is there wurh facts about them in every round. I spent about 4 hours here, and they udually gave something going on at a specific time (such as feeds, or a particular place being open). All the better it's in a huge country park.

Tried marsh farm last week so decided to try Lea Valley AAP today. It was good. Kids had fun. We definitely had a good time and was similar but different to Marsh farm which was good. Only downside i would say is there is no indoor soft play area & only 1 toilet other than the ones at the entrance was annoying. Got tickets less than half price so was worth it. Got 3 free pumpkins 🎃 to take home 1 for each child which was nice.
Imz — Google review
Went this weekend for the Pumpkin patch and oh what a disaster this was. Literally no animals, saw a few wallabys, barely any Halloween decorations, the cafe was closed, the coffee machine wasn't working. There was ONE BARN where they did shows back to back. We did it last year and it was great, this year it was an absolute waste of money. If you're going to cut back on an event, you need to have your prices reflect that, especially as this cost almost £50 for a family of 4. Don't waste your time families, pay a little more and head to Chelmsford where you are guaranteed a good time !

River Lee Country Park

Country park
River Lee Country Park, located in the vicinity of Waltham Abbey, is a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and families. The park offers a variety of activities such as walking, cycling, and horse riding amidst its picturesque surroundings. Visitors can explore the diverse wildlife including birds and otters while enjoying leisurely strolls along well-maintained pathways. Additionally, families can visit Lee Valley Park Farms to learn about animals or take a tractor and trailer ride.
River Lee Country Park in Cheshunt is a tranquil haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Spanning over 100+ acres, the park offers a diverse range of landscapes, from lush woodlands and open meadows to serene lakes and marshes. It's an ideal spot for walking, cycling, and birdwatching, with well-maintained paths and plenty of wildlife to observe. One of the park's standout features is its network of waterways, which adds to its charm and provides opportunities for activities like fishing and kayaking. The park is also dotted with picnic areas, making it perfect for family outings. The park's accessibility is another plus. It's easily reachable by public transport, with Cheshunt Station nearby, and has ample parking for those arriving by car. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with its natural beauty, makes River Lee Country Park a fantastic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, some areas could benefit from more signage, as it can be easy to get a little lost, especially for first-time visitors. Despite this minor issue, the park's vastness and variety offer something for everyone, whether you're seeking a quiet spot to relax or an active day out exploring nature.
Amigo R — Google review
This park was very beautiful. I have been visiting here many times over the past years. On 9/9/2024, I found the best part between Hooks Marsh Car Park and Fishers Green Car Park to become the wost part! The plants have been left to overgrow and cover nearly everywhere! All those beautiful views of the past are no longer there. The rest of the park is not that bad. The park is very big with many lakes, waterways, footpaths and boathouses. However, there's only one public toilet at Fishers Green Car Park. This car park is monitored by many cameras. If you don't pay for your parking, you'll get a PCN! There are many towers carrying high power electric cables in the top half of the park.
Abdullah Y — Google review
Absolutely love walking around, perfect for dogs, children and a casual stroll. Definitely worth the travel.
Rebecca E — Google review
The perfect balance of human elements like solid walkways, benches and signposts and the rest of it is just the natural land. Whether you want to just get the steps on and take a relaxed stroll amongst the trees and greenery, or a wildlife enthusiast looking to see all the local life or looking to make a round trip visiting the different wooden sculptures and set pieces such as the giant chair, then the country park should advisory be your destination. There are facilities of different kinds for around but other than that you can just embrace the fresh air and natural surroundings.
Mike ( — Google review
My sister and I came here for a roam around nature. It is very nice here and the water is serene and it is calm and peaceful. I wish I had a wire haired fox terrier crossed with a Jack Russell to walk alongside me. I would bring him here every day. I am now inspired to live on a boat on the canal.
Molly C — Google review
Beautiful park to have a walk around. Can easily spend a good few hours here. There's parking, a pub and cafe too!
Dkp333 P — Google review
Extremely beautiful place. Sooo peaceful and calming. Can have really good walks theres. Didn't realise how big the place was. Recommended.
Zane___ K — Google review
This is a wonderful park just north of the M25 that offers miles of paths, numerous lakes and a sense of tranquility. It's big enough to give everyone enough space and it's dead flat, with hard paths, so it's accessible by all. A great place to get away from the world.

Fast food restaurant
McDonald's is a renowned and enduring fast-food establishment recognized for its hamburgers and french fries. Located at Highbridge Retail Park on Highbridge Street in Waltham Abbey, their restaurant remains a beloved choice for families. While occasional errors may occur with orders, an issue that frequently arises pertains to the malfunctioning of their ice machine, resulting in unavailability of ice cream or iced beverages.
My friends and I flew into Stansted, got our rental, and headed straight for Stonehenge. The group is on a mission to sample McDonald's from every country we visit, so we stopped here along the way. Service was wonderful, they were very fast, we had everything we requested, to include the various dips, and it tasted very fresh and yummy. This was my first experience with the sweet curry dip, and I loved it.
Ricki M — Google review
The service was fast, but they forgot my hash brown with my sausage and egg meal. Luckily, it was not from the drive-through.

These people are young most of them and work really hard. Love the place and food always ready and warm.
Irina B — Google review
A complete pig sty. Rubbish eveywhere inside and out. All rubbish bins overflowing. Tables and benches full of rubbish also. It was disgusting and dirty. The manager and staff should be ashamed. Asked for food to take away instead as we didn't want to sit in a pig sty!!!
MBK79 — Google review
Very disappointed with the service today, it felt very disorganised. 2 x Customers walked out because not being served. My order was wrong, I had ask the order board to remove cheese and it did not work so asked a member of staff (who was helpful) to remove one item of cheese not across the complete order, but the food came out wrong. The time it took to get our food was far to long. It wasn't even busy. Come McDonald's Waltham Abbey get a grip.
Malcolm L — Google review
Drive through took an insane 20 minutes, and when asked why were given no reason or nothing to compensate for the time. Also didn’t listen to my order properly. Avoiding from now on. Burnt fries too, it’s supposed to be a happy meal, come on.
SPXRKZ — Google review
Terrible service, ordered food, about an hour later it’s still saying 20-30 minutes and it keeps repeatedly getting delayed. Nobody answering the phone when I’ve called 7 times, embarrassing to be called ‘fast food’. Will never try to order from them again.

Nestled in the charming town of Waltham Abbey, Shuhag Tandoori stands out as a delightful destination for those craving authentic Indian cuisine. The restaurant is not just about food; it’s an experience enriched by the warm hospitality of its owner, Naim. His passion for traditional Indian cooking shines through as he shares captivating stories about the restaurant's history and his family's culinary journey.
We went to the Shuhag this evening 7/12/24 for my daughters birthday. What a fantastic evening. The food was absolutely lovely. The place is clean with a great atmosphere. Staff where fantastic and service 10/10. To top off the evening they put on happy birthday song and a cheese cake with candle appeared with a bottle of red for a gift. Will strongly recommend the Shuhag to anyone. Thank you Shuhag for a wonderful evening.

PLEASE STAY AWAY IF YOU WANT TO LIVE! Me and my family ordered food from here last night for the first time through just eat. We were disgusted to have been served RAW chicken. Not a little bit pink, pure raw! We contacted the shop who were happy for us to drive down and show them the chicken then guess what, we got there and the shop was shut! These people are happy to poison their customers and run away from the problem. We have reported them to just eat and we are reporting them to environmental health before customers get food poisoning from this place. We are hoping we do not get ill from this. I will let the images do the talking below.

when visiting Hoddesdon we ordered a meal from this restaurant. We ordered a 3 course meal for 2, the 1st course overcooked chicken, 2nd course was duck and pancakes with cucumber and onion had better. 3rd course was sweet and sour chicken also hard to eat, and tufbeef with vegetables in coloured water sauce. Paid £55 with delivery, they had delivered with in minutes of ordering, I thought was really good but finding the food the way it was, left overs and microwaved. I would stay well clear of ordering on line.

Very disappointing. This is the second worst Chinese restaurant we’ve ever visited. Male staff member was very rude and peculiar. He asked what we wanted to order without having a book to write it down and ended missing one of our dishes. Female member was very polite and attentive. Duck was nice, ribs were decent and the crab claws tasted fresh. However: 1. This was the worst and most tasteless Singapore noodles I’ve ever tasted. They were grey in colour 2. The rice had no salt 3. Shredded chilli beef sauce was too sweet and there was minimal beef in the batter 4. Salt and chilli Squid was so chewy 5. Cutlery and 2 plates were dirty (had to ask for clean) 6. There were no complimentary prawn crackers! (We spent £89) The price is extortionate compared to other local Chinese restaurants that sell better quality food and at a lesser price. Everything we ordered came to £89! We will not be visiting again and do not recommend.

Nestled in a charming 17th-century pub, The Robin Hood Thai Restaurant seamlessly blends traditional ambiance with the vibrant flavors of authentic Thai cuisine. With its flagstone floors and exposed beams, this inviting eatery offers a cozy atmosphere that feels like home. While it once served solely as a pub, it has evolved to include a delightful Thai dining experience that caters to both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Thai restaurant in the Epping forest with outdoor and indoor seating and lots of parking. With wide range of options in the menu and the taste is really good and authentic. Service was friendly and fast. This is a definitely must try Thai place with family.

Took a chance eating here as my plan 'A' was shut. Situated on a roundabout so named the same, this was solely a pub once but has incorporated a Thai themed restaurant within for some time. With limited parking and a large rear garden and a small covered outside area to the front, I imagine it would be popular during warmer months. The outside and inside decor could do with some attention. The staff are very friendly and eager. Quick service, and although I did not book a table, was seated quickly. It got busy as the evening progressed. There are plenty of gluten-free options, but as usual, ask the staff regarding allergies. The food was served quickly, tasted good, and had a good portion size. 3 starters, 3 mains, and 4 drinks £83. Look out for the set menus to share for value for money. I have put this one in my book to visit again, perhaps when it's warmer

What an unbelievable place! The restaurant is set in an old pub right in the middle of Epping Forest, and it feels truly special. The beer garden is so relaxing, surrounded by trees — the perfect spot to unwind. The food was fresh, bursting with flavor, and served super quickly. Service was outstanding: polite, caring, and always with a smile. Honestly, it was our first time visiting, but definitely not our last. To top it off, the bill was surprisingly small for the amazing food and service we received 😜. Highly recommended!

A local restaurant that I always fancied trying but had never got round to it. Popped in for some lunch Sunday. Was nice to try it out as there's not many Thai restaurants in the local area. The menu had some good options, I stuck to some of my favourite Thai dishes. Overall it was nice, wasn't the best I have had, but the Pad Thai was enjoyable. Reasonably priced and something different to what we would usually eat on a Sunday.

Authentic Thai Cuisine & Cozy Atmosphere!🇹🇭 Robin Hood Thai Restaurant offers a fantastic mix of authentic Thai flavours in a warm and inviting setting. Whether you’re a longtime Thai food lover or trying it for the first time, their menu strikes a great balance between classic dishes and unique new options. We tried the Pad Thai, Red Thai Curry, Chicken Satay, Thai Fish Cakes, Beef Gatha Ron, Tom Yum Gung Soup, Masamang Beef Curry, and Som Tam, and each dish was expertly prepared with fresh ingredients and bold spices. The flavours were well-balanced—sweet, spicy, and savoury—making it feel like an authentic Thai dining experience. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive, providing excellent service. From what I understand, this location was previously a pub before being transformed into a Thai restaurant, which gives it a unique charm, blending a relaxed pub-style setting with the warmth of Thai hospitality. One small critique was the noise level. We were seated next to a particularly loud group, possibly celebrating an occasion, which made the atmosphere feel quite rowdy. We requested to be moved to a quieter area, but unfortunately, there weren’t many options. Perhaps, in the future, groups celebrating could be seated in a way that doesn’t disrupt other diners, ensuring everyone enjoys their experience equally. Despite this, Robin Hood Thai Restaurant is a hidden gem in Epping, conveniently located at the roundabout, making it easy to find. Whether you’re looking for a casual meal or a small gathering, it’s a great spot for high-quality Thai food in a laid-back setting. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Thai cuisine with great service! 🔥

They have big Thai authentic menu. The place was friendly and lot of indoor and outdoor (beer garden) seating. A bit outdated though. The food was average and not impressive. We ordered pad thai, red and green thai curries, drunken noodles. Papaya salad was good though. They have parking available as well.

I eat Thai regularly and this was definitely a cut above your average restaurant. Good depth of flavour, touch of spice but not overwhelming, delicious balance of sweetness and acidity. Looking forward to my next visit 😋

Copped Hall Trust

Copped Hall Trust is a remarkable organization that saved Copped Hall from potential development. The mid-18th century Palladian mansion, originally built by John Conyers, is now undergoing meticulous restoration under the trust's care. The trust is dedicated to preserving and restoring this historic English country house for future generations. Visitors can explore the beautiful countryside surrounding the estate, with walking routes and farm animals in the fields.
The photos on the internet really don’t do this place justice. I thoroughly recommend going on an open day (third Sunday of every month) it was filled with plenty of arts and crafts stalls, plenty of hot and cold food options, coffees, teas, alcohol. Harlow brass band provided a lovely atmosphere. Lots of different types of classic cars and owners happy to chat. The house itself has plenty to explore, Georgian bedrooms, kitchen and stables and had lots of old Georgian clothing and household items to take you back in time. The garden has lots of lovely open spaces to walk, or to chill/have a picnic. The walled garden is a must, although you’ll face a bit of a steeped hill getting back to the house which might not be suitable for everyone’s mobility. I would skip the rock garden, it was quite a walk and not much there, although again it was very peaceful. Thoroughly recommended and thankyou to all the volunteers that were working very hard all day.

Visited on Easter Sunday 2025 - we went here just for an Easter Egg hunt which all I got to say was reasonably boring. Why? There were a bunch of younger children there… not coming back.m I took some great pictures though:

Today was apple day. Lovely afternoon for families. Stalls and games to entertain the children. So much has been done restoration of the grand house. Feel life in her again. Always worth a visit. See the copped Hall trust website for events. Tickets in advance are cheaper but for a couple more on the door

Went for the open day. The most wonderful place! You can go anywhere, the walked garden is so beautiful and the underground kitchen is fascinating. The people are lovely and know everything about the place, you can hear the passion in their voices. The gardener we came across in the walled garden used to play there as a child! Then we met another, who is newly responsible for the restoration of the boarders outside the walls, took us to where the sunken rock garden is. Just lovely people. There was music, ice cream, stalls and amazing blacksmith’s included! Wonderful bakery stall too and classic cars! Can’t wait to back, perhaps in the winter to see the change in the gardens? Go! Oh and a massive lawnmower collection in the stables 😂

A beautiful place to visit, especially as it has the largest walled garden in Essex. There are various activities and open days throughout the year from fetes and historical car shows to archaeological digs! Check out their website for full details and their itinerary.

Fabulous active restoration project of this Georgian Stately home, with so much history behind it. The work of the volunteers so far is truly epic, but much more remains to be done. So your support is important. The grounds and fabulous walled garden are now functionally restored and in production of a wide range of plants and fruit. These are worth a visit by themselves. Really enjoyed our afternoon here and the refreshments are good too 😊🍰

Peaceful and well maintained gardens to the Abbey. Popular with dog walkers! Could do with some litter bins for general waste as you’ll often see rubbish left around. Plenty of car parking but beware, you’ll need to pay.

Free to visit these monastic ruins and gatehouse. Nice walking paths interspersed with medieval abbey ruins and interesting signs providing some history - very nice. Also has a lovely rose garden area, and some benches throughout. Car park was decent, though the physical machine wasn’t working so had to faff with downloading their app to pay. Prices ok for English car park.

Green and peaceful oasis in the middle of town. Car park very reasonable - £1 for 1 hr and £2 for 24 hrs. In summer rose garden must be beautiful, but even in winter dullness was refreshing to walk around and enjoy greenery and wildlife.

Absolutely adorable old pub..indeed very old. Sunday lunch was everything one would expect, and very reasonably priced. But the stand out for me was the DISABLED ACCESS..rare even now with diversity. The staff and regulars could not have been more helpful and considerate of my wheelchair bound husband. Truly a lovely experience ! Well done to the very attentive staff and the lovely landlady. Will be visiting again, but this time when the church is nit having a large communion! But the verger was very kind in showing my American nephew around.

Went there 10 before midnight, and some lady told me I'm not allowed there. I just wanted to have a pint on New Year's Eve. It might have been paid in or private party, but she didn't bother to ask who you are or why you here? In Poland, she would be welcome without problem. I was by myself, not trying to bring an extra 10 people or something.

Tony's Pie & Mash, located in Waltham Abbey's Market Square, is a beloved spot known for serving up traditional favorites like pie, mash, and liquor. One of the best! It has to swim in liquor 🥰 and need a extra hot spicy vinegar for the chilli freaks. Please Never let pie and mash die Never! X and I fully think that pie and mash could do even better if it was open in the evening

Absolutely fabulous place to eat or take away. Great prices. Friendly staff. Go here every time I visit dad in Waltham Abbey. Clean, plenty if seating. Very popular so gets very busy. As londoners we love pie, mash with green gravy (parsley sauce) lots of vinegar on. Pies are very unique recipe, very special. Tony's shop has easily access for walking as its in town centre, pedestrianised but parking around there not so easy. Highly recommend.

If i could give zero stars i would have!! We had a takeaway delivered to our work place for lunch. We have had from here before on a few occasions & the food has always been nice but this time it was awful!! We had 7 meals in total, 3 wraps all inedible, the wraps were so tough you couldn't chew them & the halloumi was rock hard. The rest of the order was chicken kebabs etc & was all poor quality & cold. They took over an hour to deliver & we had to call them to chase up our food. Plus we wanted to pay by card, we have done over the phone before but the man said he didn't know how to use the card machine & could only take cash. Very disappointing service & food. We will not be ordering or recommending this restaurant ever!

Fresh juicy tasty chips every time with very good portion sizes even in this COL crisis prices may have gone up on a few items but the quality has always been high. Restaurant
Nestled in the vibrant London Designer Outlet at Wembley Park, Zizzi - Loughton is a delightful Italian chain restaurant that brings a taste of Italy to your plate. Known for its mouthwatering pizzas and calzones served on rustic wooden boards, as well as traditional pasta dishes, Zizzi prides itself on using fresh ingredients to create simple yet flavorful recipes. Since opening its first location in Chiswick back in 1999, this beloved eatery has expanded to over 100 branches across the UK.
Had an absolutely wonderful experience at Zizzi’s in Loughton today. My mum and I went for lunch, and it was a very impromptu outing. We weren’t impressed with the selection of restaurants in Loughton and therefore ended up somewhere we thought looked really nice, from the online menu (Zizzi’s). The service was impeccable; we were seated very quickly, allowed to pick where we wanted to sit, and given plenty of options (outside and indoor seating). We were asked about allergies or special diets, before the menus were given. The wine and water arrived very fast, and shortly after the food arrived; which was fresh, hot, and delicious. I had chicken Milanese, and my mum had lamb. we also had olives for starters, and calamari. Everything was so lovely. We were also deciding what dessert to get, and wasn’t sure, so my mum ordered herself a dessert and the owner spoke to us about how lovely a particular dessert was that we didn’t order, and gave us a little taste of it… he definitely knows his stuff, and we will be ordering the desert he recommended next time. The owner gave us recommendations, and was attentive, and so friendly. It really made the day very special. It wasn’t just us that the owner paid attention to, he was a very attentive and sweet to everyone. It really makes a difference. I honestly feel like people are missing out on such a gem in the heart of Loughton. Not only was the view stunning, there was a garden which was visible in the restaurant, and the breeze coming in was so relaxing. The lighting is low and chill, which makes it so nice when you are just trying to have a quiet meal and a chat. The time went so quickly, as we were so at ease, and we will definitely be coming back very soon. 10/10 For service, food, atmosphere, music, and staff. Thank you so much for making the very small time I have with my mum extremely special on a Tuesday afternoon. Incredible restaurant, impeccable service. Natalie

This is a chain, but the manager & staff at this one are great 👍 Helpful & friendly with quick service. Got a really nice pizza that was a special - moderately spicy with a whole piece of cheese at the centre - check the photo 😁 The better half has some pasta which was also lovely. Washed down with the obligatory large Peroni it was good value overall. It's not huge on atmosphere, but it's big on tasty food 😉

The restaurant serves delicious food, but I find it slightly overpriced across all dishes. The service is generally good, but it could be more attentive to enhance the overall dining experience. On the positive side, the restaurant boasts ample seating space and a serene atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing meal. They also encourage cashless transactions, but offering cash payment options might attract more customers to the business.

The Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey is a historic site with a rich legacy in the manufacturing of explosives and gunpowder. Dating back to the 1660s, this former gunpowder factory has evolved over 300 years, playing significant roles during World War 2 and the Cold War. Visitors can explore 20 listed buildings and learn about its industrial past through science demonstrations, tractor tours, and an armory.
One of the best trips I've done with a class. Superb talk and workshop with Isabella and the team. Our students loved it! Thanks to the generous volunteer train drivers who ket the boys sit in the cabin.

I’ve just been on the Royal Gunpowder Mills walking tour. What a great experience. The history at Waltham Abbey is fascinating, and was brought to life by the knowledgeable volunteers/guides. We were a small group of 8, so plenty of opportunities to ask as many questions as we liked. The tour allowed access to many of the buildings and structures that you only see from afar on the tractor tour. For anyone with an interest in military history, explosives, or industrial architecture l’d highly recommend this tour. Many thanks to the guides for giving us their time.

Fantastic day at the Gunpowder Mills. Greeted before entry by welcoming volunteers. The site is huge with attractions and information. We made a rocket and launched it which was fun. The tractor was great with a very informative guide. The volunteer who gave us the talk in the rocket vault was exceptionally good. We went on the miniature train and the bigger train where we saw more of the site. There is so much to see and do here. Our visit was four hours and worth every penny of the entrance fee. Looking forward to booking a walking tour when they are organised.

I had been recommended the Royal Gunpowder Mills by a friend, and with the kids now a slightly bit older we decided it would be worth a try. It's only open to visitors a couple of times a month on a Sunday, and on our visit from 11am to 4pm. We got there at 11am as it opened, there is a big sign as you come off the main road, but the site is located at the end of the drive once you have driven past all the housing. Car park is a fair size, and the entrance is located to the right once you have got into the car park. Once you have gone in, it's probably worth getting yourself booked on to the tractor ride. It leaves at specific times. We went straight towards the miniature railway which took us up the site to the gunpowder mill railway. Again, there are some set timings for this, but when we got there we pretty much had the train to ourselves. The railway takes passengers for a ride further up the site, stops and then comes back again. We managed to see the deer as well as bits of the site. The guys running the railway did a fab job at showing us all about the railway, and even let the young 'uns sit in the main cab. The tractor ride was incredibly informative and really gave a good idea of how big the place truly is (massive!) and how much history is here (loads!) Again you get to see the deer, and lots of the old buildings - lots of areas are covered in greenery where nature has taken over. The kids were also given a sheet of things to look out for on the journey. At lunch we popped back to the car to get our picnic and sat at the benches next to the play area (obstacle course / zip line). There is an area where you can get a free tea / coffee - as well as toilets if required. Post lunch, we went to create some rockets and had a little competition to see who's rocket could go the furthest - kids enjoyed this! (Well, the adults did too!) After the rockets, we went to look around the exhibition and armoury. Lots to read here, and kids did do a few little interactive games (mixing the substances at the factory etc.) but they weren't quite so keen to stand and read! The armoury was literally a room full of different guns, rifles etc. When we came out of the exhibition, we just had time to have another trip on the railway. The volunteers were great and radio'd up to ensure we would catch it on time! Once our second trip on the railway was finished it was closing time... we had been there all day! We thought the dedication and hard work by the volunteers was great - we even thought about volunteering ourselves, but it's a bit of a journey away! (Although if they ever do a family volunteering day where the kids can get involved, we would certainly consider it!!)

If you want to learn about the history of gunpowder and explosives, The Royal Gunpowder Mills provides a fascinating day out. In many respects, this is the place where it all started. Our tractor guide was quite knowledgeable and provided interesting insight. The Mills is run completely by volunteers. As the MOD has been involved in siphoning off material, it's too bad the MOD doesn't promote it as the volunteers care dearly and they can use some help.

I visited with my two children and another family, on an open day during the summer holidays. There were varied activities for the kids (rocket making/launching, tie dying, slime making and nature crafts) as well as the train that runs further up along the grounds. It was a really nice day out without the extensive crowds that you often find with children’s activities in the holidays! When booking the tickets I noticed that numbers were capped quite low so I can’t imagine it would ever be uncomfortably busy. Having a mixture of fun activities for children alongside the educational side of the small museum and exhibitions was a good balance. They particularly enjoyed role playing in the village shop with ration books! I would say the open day activities etc are probably most suited for children under 10 (which all of ours were). We also saw some beautiful deer and the children enjoyed the playground as well. Everything was staffed by volunteers (I think) giving up their time to run it. Drinks and snacks in the cafe were very well priced - i bought ice lollies for 5 children for barely more than the price you’d pay for one at an ice cream van!! We brought a packed lunch with us as suggested on the website - I don’t think there is much in the way of food other than snacks available in the cafe. All in all a nice day out, something a bit different and easy to drive to and park.
Lara C — Google review
A great place to learn a little history. With a bonus tractor and train ride.
Brenden W — Google review
I took the walking tour today. Absolutely brilliant experience! We started in the cafe with a tea/coffee before heading out in a small group with the volunteers. They really knew so much about the site and were so passionate about its history that it was a real pleasure to listen to. Look out for the wildlife too- we saw lots of deer around!

Waltham Abbey Market

Market
Nestled in the heart of Waltham Abbey, the Waltham Abbey Market is a delightful bi-weekly gathering that takes place every Tuesday and Wednesday. This charming market features an array of stalls offering everything from vibrant potted plants and cozy linens to tempting pick & mix sweets and stylish hair accessories. While it may not be vast, its eclectic nature adds to its charm, especially with the historic Welsh Harp pub providing a stunning backdrop.
It's a smallish market but I like it. From food to books, to jewellery and clothes. A nice mixture of different stalls. (recently discovered the jewellery stand and got myself a lovely celtic ring with a pentagram and life tree etched out. And a beautiful locket with garnet). Can't wait for shop there again
Claire S — Google review
Small market was open, due to covid restrictions not many stalls, but hopefully that will change soon. Cafés open for take away, benches available to sit and enjoy a chat and a coffee, toilet facilities were open, this is very good as other places I have been to have been closed during the pandemic. Lovely place to visit lots of history to see. Beautiful on a a sunny day with a picnic.

History Museums
Epping Forest District Museum, located in a Grade II listed Tudor building in Waltham Abbey, offers free admission to explore the local history and art exhibits. The museum features six galleries showcasing over 50,000 historical items, including medieval and Tudor archaeological finds from the area. Visitors can also enjoy changing exhibitions and collections such as local paintings and the Waltham Abbey Bible.
A delightful community museum. I attended on a day they held a Saxon event, featuring an Axehead from Waltham Abbey. Costumed volunteers and staff were a delight to talk go
David S — Google review
This museum was advertised as telling the story of the people of the Epping Forest District, so we did think it might be a bit too much for our two small people - thankfully we didn't need to worry! Yes there is some stories and history of the area, but rather randomly there is other stuff like the current exhibition on mummified animals. For the kids, there are a few activities, and the opportunity to grab a torch and magnifying glass (and an adventure waistcoat) and look round the museum. The museum feels fairly laid back, which again is useful when your brining kids to visit! We all enjoyed the museum and spent more time than we originally expected - extra bonus - it's FREE to enter!

Good for local history, local artists (eg. Walter Spragg). Interesting building, previously residential, until 1970s-ish.

I came to the Tiger who came to Tea exhibition with an under 2 and a 5 year old. There was lots to entertain them not just in the exhibit but around the rest of the museum. We particularly loved the torches/binoculars for the children to help them investigate artefacts!
Fiona D — Google review
Nice free museum run as a charity, lots of local history
Martin R — Google review
Excellent, I always pop in when a new exhibition is on, there are no public toilets to use if you just want to go to the toilet, but make a donation and you can, this enables the museum to stay open
Vin P — Google review
Epping Forest District Museum is a wonderful place to visit. The museum has a great collection of local history, art and artifacts. The exhibits are presented in a way that makes them easy to understand and appreciate. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and were happy to answer any questions we had. We also enjoyed the interactive displays, which gave us a chance to learn more about the area's history. My kids also enjoyed the special events and activities, which were a great way to spend the day. All in all, we had a great experience visiting the museum and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and educational outing.
Josephine H — Google review
Impressive little museum with a surprisingly extensive collection, wide range of material and great interpretations which (grouped by by genre) piece together a fairly detailed history of the area. It also has public toilets, disabled access and lots of kid-friendly activities! I don't know why there isn't more publicity about it because it's worth coming up into the town to visit.

Visited the Waltham Cross branch with my girlfriend this afternoon and received wonderful service from a young man called Tommy. My partner and I are both starting our gym journeys, and Tommy made sure we were taking all the correct supplements for our fitness goals! Phoned branch enquiring if a particular item was in stock and then when I asked another question the person didnt hear me correctly, rather than say pardon said 'what '! I then asked who I was speaking to and was told the manager. I told him it was not very professional and he then put the phone down on me, no apology! Such great value for money! Me and my partner went here for some dinner like we use to when it was called Abby Grill. We was unsure about the new management but thought we would give it a try. All the ladies (staff) were so lovely and helpful. The main manger went above and beyond for us making sure everything was perfect even giving me a double brandy instead of a single as well as giving us dessert on the house. We was so stuffed we had to take our food home. We will definitely be coming back :)

Dined in the restaurant last week, food was awesome so ordered a delivery tonight. It arrived in a flash, piping hot and was the best home kebab we've ever eaten. Cost slightly more than others around but the quantity and quality certainly more than make up for that. Would highly recommend 👌 👍 🙂

This restaurant has seen a change of owners and it shows. The food was fantastic on this visit. Great service as well. It's a little quiet, so I hope it will pick up soon for them. Only small feedback is to not have the bird cage in the dining area! Also, some turkish music would be far better.

My favourite pub in Waltham Abbey, love the atmosphere, I always go to the right side where it's quiet, on the left side you have your typical sports pub with local blokes watching sports, but right side is half empty whenever I go. Never ordered food so I can't put any stars there, but the rest is right up my street. There's something about it that just appeals to me.

Rhapsodiz

African restaurant
Rhapsodiz is a popular spot known for its perfect quality and generous portions of food. The okra stew, available with a variety of meats like goat, tripe, and cow's foot, always impresses with its well-balanced taste and spice. The light soup is just spicy enough to add some excitement to the meal. Additionally, the fried yam with pepper sauce is highly recommended for its deliciousness. Customers also appreciate that their orders always arrive piping hot.
I've ordered from here several times and the quality and quantity of the food is perfect. I order the okra stew everytime, there's a variety of different meat- goat, tripe & cows foot etc but the taste and spice is always on point for me. The light soup spice is just enough to make your nose run lol so perfect!! Food always comes steaming hot! I've had fried yam with pepper sauce on another occasion and would definitely order it again. My new restaurant to order African food from when I can't be bothered to cook it myself.

Had a really excellent dining experience here. The food was great and customers service was excellent. Paulina the waiter was there at every turn, I only had to look up and she knew I needed something and straight away came over to help, suggest or bust a joke to make guests comfortable. The best bit is when I lost my phone and called the morning after and they had found it and kept safely for me to collect. Trust worthy and a real 5 star experience.
Yoofi H — Google review
Meat in all 3 dishes were not fresh meat, hard really dark and very chewy, u could just tell it wasn't fresh. I'm pregnant and was really craving African food and believe me I was very disappointed. The only good thing is the delivery time and food wise only good thing was the fufu and pounded yam apart from that I will not be using my money here again, it's a shame cause I had high hopes for this place.
Chevone — Google review
Avoid this place at all costs! The food quality is consistently poor, and the only reason I considered ordering was because it was late and no other places were open. Initially, I tried calling for 20 minutes, but no one answered. When I drove there, the music was blaring from a DJ, making it impossible to hear myself or the rude cashier. I placed my order and paid, and I was told it would take 30 minutes. When I returned after the stated time, the food wasn't ready. I left because of the deafening music and came back 15 minutes later, only to find the food still wasn't ready. To my dismay, I discovered the cashier hadn’t even placed my order. Instead of apologizing for the inconvenience, she rudely offered to refund my money if I didn't want to wait another 30 minutes. I took the refund and left after 45 minutes with no food. This place is unprofessional, with dirty and smelly toilets. It is the worst African restaurant I have ever visited. The MC frequently came to the bar where customers were trying to order, shouting in our ears. The lack of respect and basic customer service makes this a poor excuse for a business. Avoid it at all costs!

Quality and well made African food. Generous portions especially the meat and fish. Service is not the best but I’ll still give them a five star. Everyone there is not lazy, they’re doing their best and as a business owner myself, I understand there’ll be human errors few times.

Rhapsodiz is a hidden gem serving up authentic Ghanaian cuisine. The moment you step in, you're transported to Accra or Kumasi. The food is simply incredible, with flavors that are spot on. I went to complain to the wife and come come and see insults. The managers wife is very rude and unprofessional. Can’t take critics so not coming here again. Poor customer service, Disrespectful wife with a very poor attitude towards clients, and above all tasteless rubbish food but very Beautiful environment.

Food was good , but the more i ordered it declined on quality. I was a regular customer as it was the only close African restaurant that delivered.. as a customer that wanted African food with out having to spend the 3 hours to cook it . I am very disappointed with the staff lack of knowledge . Lack of customer service . I will never never order from them again as much as I want home food 🍲
