Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, located in Catalonia, is a renowned monastery established in 1025 to honor the visions of the Virgin Mary by local shepherds. The complex includes a basilica, monastery buildings, and tourist facilities. It is famous for the image of the Virgin of Montserrat and attracts pilgrims from around the world. The abbey also houses the boy's choir Escolania de Montserrat and its music school, which is the oldest in Europe.
If you happen to visit Spain, especially Barcelona, along with all the city's historical and architectural attractions, be sure to plan time for Montserrat. The Black Madonna is magnificent. The history, atmosphere, and mountain scenery are captivating. You can easily choose the most convenient transportation to the monastery. I highly recommend visiting.
Andrey S — Google review
Beatiful views, nice walking trails, The basilica and Black Madonna are a must when you visit here, you can take the funicular up the mountain from the visitor center. The outside parking is a bit of a walk and costs 7 euros. You can also park under the basilica for 10 euros for the first 3 hours or for 14 euroa for over 3 hours and up to 24 hours. Convenient for those who have trouble walking or finding parking outside.

Beautiful place. Nestled 1500m above Cataluña in the mountains. Makes you wonder, given its location, who could manage to complete such magnificent structures! I was a little late in the day so only ventured half way up to where the Basílica and the shrine is located. You can feel the history/essence in the air as you sit quietly taking in your surroundings. Also, here is where the Virgin Of Montserrat is located. After passing the patron saint of Cataluña, you can choose to veer off and enter a stained glass, oval shaped prayer room. DON'T skip out....well worth taking a seat and just reflecting for a couple of minutes. Family friendly. Lots of outdoor space. The views, well you just have to see for yourself!

Magnifcent monument. Must see. I recomend train from Barça and cable car. You can buy combined ticket. Easy. Tickets for Basilica and other are available on spot without waiting. At 13.00 hrs every working day there is a short concert from Boys choir. Must se and listen. It's beautifull. Like Walking on clouds. After you must touch the Earth in Black Madona right hand. At last I recenzent visita a wiewpoint at St. Mathew's cross. On spot can be chilly. This is the place that I'll deffinetly visit again.

One of the most beautiful places I have visited in Barcelona Spain! Highly recommend everyone to come! We took the train cable car up to the mountain! Not many tourists were there! The views are absolutely breathtaking The cathedral was sooo beautiful and peaceful! ☺️
Mahira M — Google review
We went here on a tour and I was so happy we did. I loved it that the vendors as you approach the monastery are descendants of those who sold the same cheeses and products decades if not eons ago. The Black Madonna was an inspiring experience and we really enjoyed the art museum as well. I have never seen it even referenced but it was amazing.
Linda E — Google review
So beautiful! We were with a tour group and had timed entry into the basilica, but had flexibility for going into the museum. Not sure how it is done for individuals.
Rosie B — Google review
This is a must-do day trip! We booked a small group tour via Viator. Our guide, a local, took us by train to Montserrat station, where we then took a cable car to the summit of the mountain. She gave us a great tour. We saw and were able to touch the black Madonna. We hiked to the St. Michael cross and were blown away by the views!

Restaurant Abat Cisneros is located within the Hotel Abat Cisneros, set in a 16th-century building that used to be the monastery's stable block. The dining room features a stunning stone archway and offers a cozy atmosphere for guests. The restaurant serves a prix fixe menu with seasonal dishes, providing a delightful dining experience. Guests can enjoy friendly and attentive service while savoring delicious meals such as cod and artichoke soup or cod stuffed peppers.
Beautiful food at an affordable price. The space has to be seen to be believed. Outstanding service. We can’t wait to visit again.
Corinna B — Google review
I was absolutely appalled by how rude the head waitress was, didn't even care to place the dish on the table, rather paused the plates mid-air for us to grab ourselves. This isn't an eatery at some corner, thus highly disappointed. As for the food, the starters sounded mouthwatering on paper, but failed to live up to expectations taste wise. Nothing to complain about the mains, simple presentation, great execution. Desserts were scrumptious, no qualm there. But again, the attitude of the staff was absolutely shocking and inacceptable, thus a hard no from me!
Patrick M — Google review
Having read some of the other reviews I was worried, very worried, especially as this is the only restaurant up here for those staying in the hotel. Firstly I'd like to clarify the price. It is a fixed menu of 3 courses, for €27 - not as some have said, €42. Fist course I chose the Spinach cannelloni with a creamy sauce, it was fine. Mains I chose the Beef Shank, with mushrooms, which was huge. Dessert was a bowl of fresh fruit salad. For value you'd find this very hard to beat in a tourist area, it was excellent. The menu is limited however, mains were Cod (fish), Duck or the Beef. No vegetarian option and Vegans should run for the hills. I eat meat though and was not at all dissatisfied. Only real criticism is lack of any vegetable or potato sides. A big bowl of beef was nice, but could do with some veg. Ok, service. This is something many have pointed to in their review as being poor. I think it's important to make one thing clear, we're in Spain, more precisely in Catalonia and we do not speak Spanish or Catalan. It's arrogant to expect everyone to speak English so it may seem that they're unfriendly and a little abrasive, but really, they're not and will respond to a smile and a thank you like anyone else. Don't be too harsh in expecting Michelin star service, the staff here are just fine. If I were asked to make a helpful suggestion I'd echo what someone else said about having some olive oil to dip the (free) bread in, and have some basic sides of greens or potato, otherwise this isn't a bad place to eat. We're going back again on our second night here, which while we don't really have a choice, isn't something I'm dreading. Oh and almost forgot, extra note for the background music: Pink Floyd - Wish you were here :-)
Martyn B — Google review
The food was excellent and matched the unique ambience of this quaint restaurant. There was a slight wait for a table but the interval was over before we could even really relish the sunset overlooking the vista to the south from 4,000ft. This is a truly amazing experience and the servers polite and gracious. Spanish olive oil is distinct and so tasty. The menu was a set price for 3 course with plenty of variety. Highly recommend but get in early before 9pm and make a reservation and you be good to go

Delicious food and attentive service. It caters well to people with gluten intolerance. Lots of local choices and products (lovely local olive oil and local wine). The menu had a selection of delicious treats including strawberry gaspacho, tuna tartar, eggplant and cheese mini empanadas, croqueta, etc… they were all served individually, first the cold choices then the hot starters. For the main course, we could choose from a great variety of dishes for all tastes. There’s a kids menu as well. My son chose the breaded chicken and it was very well seasoned and cooked, juicy and tender while also crunchy on the outside. Highly recommend for travelers exploring Montserrat for the day. We made reservations in advance.
Ana F — Google review
We went because it is one of the few options in Montserrat. It serves decent dishes, but this time I don't know why the food was not that good. We got the 40€ menu (the only option) and it was simple and not tasty. Some of the dishes were cold although they were ment not to be cold. The only thing I enjoyed was the cod tapa, and the space.
Joel J — Google review
We had a set menu. It was a lovely meal with an amazing service by very professional and passionate waiters/waitresses. The appetizer was an explosion of a surprising mix of flavours and the mains were cooked to perfection. Turbut with gnocchi and the beef cheeks which mushrooms just melted in the mouth with delicious sauces. And of course the setting was stunning in the beautiful mountains of Montserrat.
Amy — Google review
Visiting Monserrat is delightful by itself, but finding an absolutely first class restaurant in such a small remote village elevated this visit above the mountains and clouds you climb to visit. A prix fixe menu surprised with excellence in every course.

Located in Montserrat, RESTAURANT BO2 offers amazing food at reasonable prices. Visitors can enjoy set meals that include tapas dishes, a main course, dessert, wine, and water for a great value. The menu features exceptional dishes such as Mussels and croquettes de langostinos. The cozy atmosphere with great music sets the perfect vibe for a delightful dining experience. With its quaint charm and delicious Catalan cuisine, this hidden gem comes highly recommended by many satisfied diners.
A true hidden gem! Nestled in a charming narrow street, this restaurant offered an authentic Catalan dining experience. We were the only non-locals there, and despite my limited Spanish, the server treated us with genuine warmth and care. We opted for the €19 meal combo, which included a starter, main course, dessert, and a glass of local wine, along with water. Every dish was perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious, and the local wine was a delightful surprise! A solid 10/10 – highly recommended!

Excellent restaurant in a narrow street in centre of Monistrol. They serve excellent food v well presented. The Arroz/ paella is excellent as are the tapas style starters. The staff are very friendly, don’t speak English but have a printed menu in English. Would definitely highly recommend it.

Reserva Natural Parcial de la Muntanya Montserrat is a natural park with over 1250 species of plants, offering stunning views and a variety of activities. Visitors can explore the shops, museums, and local restaurants while enjoying picturesque surroundings. The area also features a beautiful church and a farmers market with affordable goods to sample. Accessible by train, the location provides breathtaking vistas and an opportunity to see Tibidabo in the distance on clear days.
WOW! Worth to visit, beautiful place! Lots of parking space which coast 7€ for whole day. There is 2 funiculars to go down to Santa Cova ⛪️ (apox 6€ per person), and up to Sant Joan (17€ per person)
Vilma Z — Google review
I was truly captivated by the picturesque views and pristine landscape that surrounded me. The weather could not have been more perfect - no wind, no rain, just clear skies and a gentle breeze. It was an ideal setting for a day of exploration and appreciation of nature's beauty. Although I was unable to walk the paths due to being on a tour, I am already planning my return to fully immerse myself in the tranquil setting and explore the various pathways that promise even more breathtaking sights. One of the highlights of the visit was discovering the rich history that resides within this place. It added a layer of depth to the experience, making it all the more meaningful. Despite the few stairs leading to the cathedral, the effort was well worth it, and I found the cleanliness of the public washrooms to be a pleasant surprise. What struck me the most was the tranquility of the surroundings - with not many people around, I was able to fully appreciate and enjoy the serenity of the location. I look forward to returning to [Destination] and spending more time there, soaking in the beauty of the landscape and delving deeper into its history.

Fantastic landscape. Many easy paths with concrete stairs. Lots of climbing as well. In January you can have sunny days and no overcrowding, especially in the morning and later afternoon.

Simply Stunning. Within just over an hour's drive outside Barcelona-- the views will leave you breathless. The scenery along the route and at the monastery are spectacular and the monastery itself is beautiful. You will get to see the Black Madonna and can light a candle for you or a loved one.

Beautiful place a top the mountain. You can reach by car, train etc. Beautiful views. Monastery from the inside was superb. Parking outside is just fine and it's just5 mins walk. The one near the site is so narrow that SUVs might get scratched. A nice bakery shop outside, a other eating and resting joints nearby. Just awesome. Check my photos and leave a thumbs up if you liked the review.
Nand J — Google review
Absolutely beautiful place!! There was so much to see and fantastic views for memorable pictures. We went to the shops all around, we hiked, we ate at local restaurants, went to the museums, and even the book store. The public restrooms were nice and clean and the farmers market was very affordable with all kids of cheeses and candies you can taste before you buy. The church was beautiful and the entire place was clean and very picturesque. Although it was really cold, we had an absolute wonderful time and can't wait to comeback again!!
Alex T — Google review
The vista is astounding. If you have a keen eye and the luck for clear weather, you can even see Tibidabo in the distance. Needless to say, this is a place to visit. If you have a trip in Barcelona/Andorra or their surroundings, you should definitely come here. Rumour has it that one becomes a true Catalan only if they climb up the whole road to Montserrat! I took the train as a mere foreigner.

Ermita de Santa Cecília is a stunning location with rounded and elongated mountain walls formed by tectonic and isostatic movements over millennia. The hard conglomerates in the area, shaped by atmospheric agents, have created fascinating formations. Sant Jeroni, the highest point at 1,236 meters, offers spectacular views from the Pyrenees to the Sierra de Tramuntana in Mallorca on clear days.
Actually very good stop before Montserrat Monastery. Great view all around and the little church and parking. Enjoyed my time there

Nestled high in the mountains, Restaurant Montserrat offers a stunning view and a variety of dining options. La Cafeteria provides quick bites in a food court style, while market stalls offer regional specialties. The restaurant serves delightful dishes like Sepia and Fideoa de Mariscos, an alternative to Paella with noodles and seafood. The warm service and homemade food create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
The restaurant is located in a beautiful setting of a picturesque town. Friendly service, friendly prices, excellent food (soo good) and even very good beer (I'm from the Czech Republic, that's saying something),all under the flowering fringe. Thank you very much for a great evening,

The only restaurant/bar in the area that opens on Tuesday evenings, and it's a good one! Tasty tapas and drinks at a reasonable price.

This is the MOST amazing place. Service and food are soooooo amazing. We had Sepia, and the owner, Dani, told me that this dish "it's out of this world." 🤪😄 She was totally correct! They send us the most amazing dish. It is called "Fideoa de Mariscos". Amazing, amazing, amazing. This is the very popular Paella alternate version made with noodles and seafood. To die for. Delicious!! It is run by the NEW owners, and they are absolutely incredible. Highly recommended 👌 5 🌟

Quick service and welcoming staff but food not worth the price. Small and almost cold piece of poor vegetable lasagna with no bechamel nor cheese 14,9 euro!! (picture attached). Other dishes also double the price. Food is homemade style not restaurant style. Don’t recommend

La Cafeteria is a casual eatery located on the main road, conveniently situated next to a souvenir shop and patisserie. The cafeteria offers a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, making it an ideal spot for a quick meal. Despite its unassuming appearance, the food quality is surprisingly decent for the price. While the service may sometimes be preoccupied with internal conversations, the staff is friendly and accommodating. Visitors can expect generous portion sizes at reasonable prices, making it a satisfying dining option.
I liked this place. Quick eats, nothing fancy. Also, the cafeteria staff were so kind, they helped guide us to the station outside of Monistrol, and went out of their way to make sure we weren’t lost. Such great souls. Thank you again.

at least there are options up the mountain 😂 honestly pasta was ok but meatball had no flavour! mushrooms are ok too. if there’s a next time up the mountain we may pack our own food 😂
Aly — Google review
It was just fine. 9 euros for a decent jamón and cheese sandwich. Was somewhat chaotic but the price was as expected at a remote tourist location. Espresso (café solo) was to the normal high standard for 2 euros.
Jesse F — Google review
I had an unpleasant experience in La Cafeteria at Montserrat (the one in the photos) yesterday. Would give 0 stars if possible, and this would not only be based on their extremely low quality of food. I won't even touch on this (there are many other reviews here describing how bad the food is). My experience was worse than just eating overpriced subpar food. I came to this place for lunch before exploring the Monastery area, and bought the pasta of the day and a bottle of water. After eating my lunch, I was walking in the store next door while sipping my bottle of water when a local guard came asking me to follow him because he needed to question me. Felt a bit weird but I walked outside with him. I asked many times what was going on and he answered that he would not question me in public. He took me to some sort of warehouse near the store and museum (at this time a second guard joined). The senior guard then asked me if I had stolen that bottle of water I was drinking. Yep, I am not joking. Someone from the cafeteria called the local guards on me saying that I grabbed the bottle of water and walked out without paying. I wish I could understand the reasons for them to believe that I needed to steal a BOTTLE OF WATER, but I can't. No explanations were given. After showing my credit card charges for the lunch and water that I had just bought, they let me go, but not a full apology. This never happened to me in any other places, in any other countries. While the guard and cashier ladies checked my credit card charges, one of the ladies started to get defensive instead of apologizing. The other lady only offered a very shy and kind of half apology. Wish I had read all the bad and negative reviews here before eating in this cafeteria. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of places to eat around the Monastery, and this cafeteria is definitely a tourist trap. In the future, I will either eat before going up to the Monastery area or will bring my own food/water supply.
Paulo B — Google review
I see comments of people expecting literally this cafeteria that is like petrol station style to have food from 5 star restaurants, people are surprised that in the peak of mountain where is difficult to deliver supplies prices are higher. Like are you all dumb? Place is mid that is true but i see comments of foreigners complaining that coffee is 2 eur .-. Then go to your country where you have coffee for exact same price and be quiet.
Marcin J — Google review
Almost every employee seemed to have a bad attitude or openly disliked tourists—even though that’s their job. On top of that, the cafeteria appears to shut down about an hour before the last train leaves (around 6 PM), which is incredibly inconvenient for visitors trying to grab a snack or drink before departing.
Curated B — Google review
Salt was great, really helped give flavour to the cold food they were serving, bread and butter was also delicious. €57 for 4. One of the very few restaurants on top of Montserrat so I guess they can get away with the extremely low standard of food they serve. Would recommend you take a picnic instead and enjoy the view from the picnic area.
Mollie F — Google review
Nothing fancy, but a reasonable choice of food for a canteen. Our food was cold but I think it had been warm it could have been OK. It's also quite pricey but I guess you're paying for convenience and there's not a lot around to choose from. We went on a sunday and it was pretty busy, tough to find a table and there was quite a queue for food

Cafe
Bar de la Plaça is a popular spot that caters to tourists, offering a variety of food and drinks at relatively higher prices. While it primarily operates as a bar, it also functions as a restaurant during lunch and dinner hours. The menu is diverse, featuring everything from coffee to sandwiches. Despite limited seating, it's an ideal choice for grabbing takeaway items for a picnic elsewhere.
for a captive audience, the food is priced as you would expect. simple but surprisingly good sandwiches, the cafe con leche is average but does the job

👎 Terrible experience — would give zero stars if I could! The staff handled food very carelessly — I saw someone grab bread with bare hands, no gloves, no tongs. It’s completely unhygienic, especially when the bread is just left out in an open display case. I also bought a hot dog, and when I went to add sauces, I realized the sauce station was right on top of the trash bins. It smelled bad and completely ruined the experience. This place clearly doesn’t follow basic hygiene standards. I absolutely do not recommend it. If I could give zero stars, I definitely would.
Enos L — Google review
Better bring your own food to Montserrat than eat there. There's not much to choose from. An average bread with the most basic cheese and ham = 10 €. Weird staff 👎

Terrible Experience — Would Not Recommend The lady serving us was incredibly rude, careless, and unprofessional. She was moving at a snail’s pace, giving attitude to every customer, and even throwing the food when serving. She had dark hair and glasses, and her behavior was completely unacceptable. To make things worse, she made racist and mocking remarks toward customers — absolutely disgusting conduct. If you value respect and basic decency, skip this place entirely. You’re better off going to the supermarket instead.

We were out of touristic season, but I felt sorry for the staff. The place was overcrowded, quite messy, bearing in mind that it was the only place opened at that time. I can't say anything wrong about the actual service. The guys were smiling to the customers with great stoicism 😊 To mention the prices, they are to the level of an international airport 😊

I ordered hot-dog and what I recieved was inedible. I'm usually not too picky but the bun smell left me absolutely disgusted (smelled like poop). Not to mention 6.65€ price tag. So I would suggest to avoid this place if possible and if you have to eat something pick a sandwich or a salad and STAY AWAY from hot-dog.

Its good for a cafe in the mountains. I can confirm they offer gluten free sandwiches if you ask at the counter, but they have to make them special and it takes 20 minutes. Food is expensive as you might expect given the location. The line to get in was long and slow moving. Atmosphere is nice. I got the tuna sandwich and it was okay. Bread was fresh but it was light on filling. My wife ordered a gluten free ham and cheese sandwich.

In general, there is no normal place to eat around. There was a long line here too. We waited in line for more than 15 minutes to order. It is very difficult to find a place to sit outside. The tables are not clean. The prices are not suitable for the taste, they are expensive. But in the worst case, it is just to get full.

Bar La Roca is a cozy family-owned spot where you can enjoy delicious meals and friendly service. It's a great place to unwind after a day of hiking or exploring the nearby ancient village. The menu offers simple yet delightful dishes, such as ribs with Roquefort sauce, grilled chicken, croquettes, and oven-baked mushrooms. Visitors appreciate the fresh and tasty food at affordable prices.
Stopped here for a quick light bite after visiting the monastery at Monserrat. Super friendly and accommodating service. Good food at great prices. Seems to be frequented by locals who very kindly gave up their tables for our group of 7 and moved to the bar counter.

Reached after walking out of train station, cross bridge with beautiful river view and thru a small community farm/garden. Very affordable food €10++ and large portion esp roast chicken. More local diners than tourists. Very busy but waiters were all chirpy

We enjoyed a delicious simple lunch, freshly prepared, of a goats cheese salad, a grilled chicken quarter with croquettes & delicious oven baked mushrooms, plus a glass of vino tinto. En route from Barcelona to Andorra; pleased to have discovered this adorable little ancient village and a truly local restaurant where lunch for 2 is under €20. We will visit again! Loved the troupe of beautiful tabby cats who waited patiently to eat up any scraps & posed gorgeously for their pics to be taken. Our puppy enjoyed the view (& the chicken!)

The place was absolutely packed and there was only one server who remembered every detail about people’s orders and was extremely impressive managing about 20-30 tables with no problems. They didn’t have much for vegetarians, but they made us an omelette sandwich. The bread was delicious. The barista Jarti was great as well.

Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Camí dels Francesos. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

National park
Nestled in a mountainous landscape, Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat is characterized by its toothlike clusters of towering rock formations, oak-filled high plains, and diverse birdlife. The park is home to the renowned Monastery of Montserrat, a significant pilgrimage site in Catalonia.
Absolutely stunning. We took the cable car to the monastery and the funicular to the top (it’s not cheap but the views are stunning). Plenty of easy to walk paths for casual Walker as well as some more challenging routes. We took the shorter route up the top of mountain that housed a small church and settlement but can also do a longer hike to the tallest peak in the range. 5 year old son and 10 year old daughter just about managed the trickier bits of the path. Monastery is amazing place. Would highly recommend a day trip there if you’re in the area.

I went with my friend to this adventure, we rode the cable car which picked us to the top of the mountain , the views were breathtaking, walking around for shopping and getting some food and visiting the church all these activities can be done when you are on top of this mountain The trip is highly recommended.

Stunning and beautiful place! The sights of the mountains are marvelous, and there's a lot of things to do in this general area. It's quite touristy, but it's definitely worth going if you want to see something amazing. I recommend taking a train here, because there's a train station in the middle of the busy area of this place.

Montserrat is one of my favourite places. 💚I come here frequently. Very busy during the summer months so autumn and spring are the best. During the winter is super cold, don’t recommend 😁

A breathtaking place. It literaly rises up from the surrounding landscape so that you can see it for kilometers. The monestary on top is also beautiful. Its even better if you take the train/tram to the monestary. The views are breathtaking and the Mountain is so high that you can even see the pyrenees. Its a shame that the last train from the top goes down about 17:00. This place should be enaugh to justify a trip to catalonia .

Magnificent place. We took the rack railway to the monastery and then the funicular to the Sant Joan. I only wish we could have more time to enjoy the walks up there, so it is recommended to visit early in the morning and check the rack railway timetables if you are planning to use them, as they go only hourly from and back to Barcelona (in January).
Noémi S — Google review
We visited in April 2023 and it was well worth the effort to go. Took the train from Barcelona, took cable car up & cog wheel train back down. Amazing views! Our trip was pretty brief, and though we didn't, you can make a day out of it depending on how ambitious you want to be hiking.
Lee G — Google review
What to say about the Parc Natural de Montserrat? There aren't enough words allowed on this review to say everything we feel about our experience. From the ride up to the ride down, this was certainly an experience we didn't want to end. There is something for almost everyone, such as hiking for adventure seekers; a huge gift shop to get your shopping on; many amazing picture spots for those who love to take pictures There is a children's playground in the town of Montserrat itself, by one of the hotels. It has structures for younger and older children. We saw two sets of public restrooms in excellent condition. The smallest and third, option, is at the upper end of the Funicular of Sant Joan, and it's just one stall for both women and men. Many dogs of different sizes can enjoy the natural park. You can certainly find some great stops to have a picnic, such as one with amazing views, while on the way to the Ermita de Sant Joan. Now, the most impressive feature of Montserrat is the Monastary, and all the areas within it you can visit, with the Basilica being the most important one. I highly recommend it!!!

Sant Jeroni is the highest peak in Montserrat, standing at 1,236 meters. It offers breathtaking views of the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean, and distant islands. The trail to reach this peak starts near Vinya Nova vineyard-restaurant and takes hikers through a well-maintained path with some forest patches and beautiful viewpoints along the way.
Hard hike from Montserrat but WORTH it. Stunning views and on a sunny day like we had, can see for miles!

The hike was tough, but the view on the top is spectacular, I would say if you have time you definitely need to hike to the top. The last train back to Barcelona is 7pm, the whole hike takes about 3.5 to 4 hours.

It is one of my favourite places to go to relax hiking inside to these magic places. 🌳🌲☘️🌱🏵🌸🍂🍁🐐🐐 What do you need: A good shoes 🥾 please not 🩴🥿👠 remember that you're going for a walk. A water 💧 💧 and some snacks 🍎🍌🍐🥪🧃 If you're going for a run 🏃‍♀️ 🏃‍♂️ maybe don't need a lot of stuff. I recommend starting the way of the stairs is very hard but is shorter than if you're going for the viacrusis way. You can come with the dog 🐕 If you have a child and they like hiking, then you can bring with you, if it's not the case, better not because they are not going to enjoy and can be a bad memory for both. I hope you enjoy the hiking 🚶‍♂️ 🚶‍♀️

The hike to the top of Jeroni Mountain was a very intense experience. The beginning of the hiking trail is in the area of the Montserrat monastery. It took a while to find it. But if you start coming from the parking lot, you need to walk to the end of the road, you will pass the tourist information kiosk and the entrance to the monastery courtyard. There are stairs straight ahead at the end of the road. You have to climb them and then just follow the signs. The hiking trail was very well marked. There are different trails, we took trail number one as we wanted to go out to the highest peak. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the top, we came down about 1 hour and 5 minutes. The trail is not the easiest, because it mostly goes uphill, and some of the climbs are quite steep. The terrain was very varied - stairs, paved road, stones, forest road, etc. But the views were really amazing, especially when you got to the top. It was a really amazing experience. We went there in October and the wind was extremely strong, so you have to think about your clothes, it's definitely very hot in the summer and the sun is shining. Parking costs €7 in the area of the monastery. You can also leave it on the side of the road for free, but then you have to walk about 2 km from there to the starting point of the hiking trail.
Teele H — Google review
If you're looking for a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona, hiking to the summit of Saint Jeroni mountain in Montserrat is a fantastic option. 🔝👟👣⛰️We parked at the main lot which cost €7 for a normal vehicle. the hike is no joke! The trail is long, steep in parts, and especially tough under the summer sun. The stairs toward the top can feel endless, but the panoramic views are absolutely worth it. 😍❣️I highly recommend wearing hiking shoes or at least good sports shoes, as the terrain is rocky and uneven in many places. Despite the difficulty, it was a truly beautiful and memorable experience. ☀️⚡️💪💛💫🙌🌼

Nestled within the stunning Montserrat massif, Montgros stands as a remarkable peak at 1,120 meters. (Translated by Google) Perhaps it is the peak with the best views of the Montserrat massif. With a slightly lower height than its neighbors Sant Jeroni, Echos, Roca Plana dels Llamps, Salamandra, etc., it allows you to contemplate these peaks, plus practically the entire eastern, southern and western part of the massif. Access is of moderate or high difficulty, depending on where you access it from. You have to overcome significant gradients with slippery sections, steps where you have to use your hands, some delicate flanking, some slightly exposed areas, etc. (Original) Potser és el cim amb millors vistes del massís de Montserrat. The Museum of Montserrat is a must-visit for art enthusiasts in Montserrat. It houses an impressive collection of Catalan art, archaeological finds from the Ancient World and Middle East, and masterpieces by renowned artists such as Caravaggio, Picasso, and Dali. The museum's contents date back to 1911 and include objects from expeditions to the Middle East.
It was a pleasant surprise!! Good collection (Dali, Picasso, Renoir, Monet) and kind staff ❤️ We had tickets bought in advance and visited on a Wednesday, end of October around 4 pm. There was no wait and inside it was really nice, few people around, with plenty of space to enjoy the museum !

Not worth visiting if you are not Christian. There is no description of the artwork, so you will not understand anything here and will learn nothing like me. I had to Google the stories myself. 90% of the artwork is related to the religion, especially in relation to Montserrat. I think even Christians (esp from other countries) would not understand the stories about Montserrat and the religion just by looking at the paintings and sculptures. I really recommend providing more information in the form of words or audio. Somehow the staff looked annoyed all the time. The museum is quite large, it has around three floors. We were a bit lost at times, I wished there were more signs to indicate the directions. We spent about an hour here. The price was 12€ for adults and 10€ for students.

Rising from the rugged cliffs of Catalonia, the Museum of Montserrat is a remarkable cultural retreat set within the iconic Montserrat Monastery complex. With sweeping views and a rich blend of art and history, it offers visitors an experience that’s both visually and spiritually rewarding. Elevated Setting Set against the dramatic Montserrat mountain range, the museum’s location is breathtaking. Just steps from the famous basilica and the Black Madonna, the museum feels like an artistic oasis above the clouds—serene, contemplative, and strikingly beautiful. Diverse and Surprising Collections Though compact in size, the museum houses an impressive array of over 1,300 pieces across six themed sections: Ancient Art & Archaeology: Highlights include an Egyptian sarcophagus and artifacts from Mesopotamia and the Holy Land—offering a glimpse into biblical history. Renaissance & Baroque Works: Masterpieces by Caravaggio (Saint Jerome in Meditation), El Greco, and Luca Giordano anchor this section. Catalan and Modern Art: A strong representation of Catalan painters such as Casas, Rusiñol, and early works by Picasso gives the museum a regional soul. Impressionists & Avant-Garde: The collection surprises with works by Monet, Degas, Miró, Chagall, and Tàpies—blending tradition with modernism. The museum is well-organized and accessible, with audioguides and guided tours available. It’s ideal for a one-hour visit, though art lovers may linger longer. Despite its small footprint, the depth and quality of the collection are outstanding. The Museum of Montserrat is a hidden gem high in the Catalan mountains—compact yet rich, serene yet thought-provoking. Whether you're visiting for the art, the views, or the monastery itself, this museum adds a meaningful layer to the Montserrat experience. A must-visit for travelers seeking inspiration in both nature and culture.

Guests can indulge in an array of desserts, fruits, and ice creams while enjoying unlimited beer, juices, and soft drinks.
5 stars for a great salad bar and good vegetarian options. The fish was incredible! Best value in Barcelona at only £20 for all you can eat buffet. Soft drinks included. Whilst the food is maybe not 5 star, for a great value lunch with amazing views over Montserrat, it was fantastic. Highly recommended when visiting the area.

Pretty much the only restaurant at the top of the cable car - €20 buffet includes serve-yourself cerveza so that satisfied - at 13:50 on Sunday there was a queue of maybe 50 people up the stairs waiting to get in - lots of choices - plenty to fill your belly - ice cream tasted artificial but apricots and whipped cream totally worked for me! Great view terrace behind for before or after.

We came in a bit late, I think we were at the end of buffet, as there’s a few empty dishes, like paella and fish. They have salad, fruit, dessert, lots of choices but I’m, beer and wine included. Beer is very formy, need to wait a while so you can have 2 sips, they do have water there as well, but they are warm? Not sure why. Also the meat dishes are very limited, they have drumsticks and chicken wings, a few pork dishes as well, just does looking very appetizing

After a tiring day of hiking in Montserrat, I discovered that many eateries in the area close early. However, Ca la Rosa stood out as it remained open late and had ample seating upstairs. Their menu boasted fantastic cuisine, with dishes like the brie and smoked salmon salad being particularly noteworthy. This appetizing salad was substantial enough to satisfy two people. Additionally, their calamari a la plancha was delectable and the entrecote was cooked to perfection.
After a long day of hiking in Montserrat, we learned that many restaurants around here close early. Ca la Rosa was open late, had plenty of space upstairs, and offered great food. The brie and smoked salmon salad was enough for two! (Yum!) The calamari a la plancha was delicious, and the entrecote was done to perfection. Service was very pleasant, food came quick, and the price was reasonable,

The salmon salad with brie (€10) was really good (especially if you are not very hungry). The lamb (€15) was just okay, but I love that they serve it with grilled vegetables. Would go again but wouldn’t say it’s a must go :)

Santa Cova de Montserrat is a monumental monastery located on the mountainside, featuring a chapel with a statue of Virgin Mary. Visitors can enjoy the enchanting voices of the Montserrats Boys Choir and indulge in wine and tapas at an ancient winery in Sant Sadurni d'Anoi.
This is a small chapel near the Montserrat basilica. I was hiking up from the train station so this was a minor detour. The walk to the chapel is interesting with some interesting sculptures on the way, you’ll be walking along a paved road. The hillside chapel preserve the side of the hill at the main altar. Takes about 20 mins to walk to the chapel, there is no entry fee. There is also a miniature version of the Madonna at the chapel.

At the end of the walk, there’s a lovely little chapel — very peaceful and worth seeing. But be prepared: the way there is quite long, and you’ll need to walk back uphill. Make sure to bring water with you, as there are no shops or fountains along the path.

It is about a 20 minute walk from the Monastery but definitely worth it! The observation deck itself was quite busy, however the walk and surrounding area was not and it offered a unique perspective of the Monastery. Definitely worth the walk!
Joe D — Google review
This was a more intense hike than I thought! The chapel is small and sweet with a small replica of the Black Madonna, but it wasn't super exciting. Be aware of the effort that you'll make to get here!

On arrival for the Bascilica, we chose this detour (40-50 min hike). It is worth it- breath-taking views, serenity, artistic works depicting the stations of the cross (including one by Gaudi) all on the route to a tiny Chapel, simply decorated with an alter facing cliff rock. Bring water and a snack as there are plenty of resting spots on the treck. You will feel lighter and at peace for the experience...and a little glowing.

Very pretty views and cute buildings. Very religious and not very vegan friendly… If you have good legs and just want a quick look, you have 30min to go and come back for free - hard to do but not impossible (my partner and I made it with a few minutes to spare - running a bit of course).

Very beautiful monastery on a mountain top, the exterior architecture and interior architecture are stunning. It’s quite a trip to get here, they have a gondola that takes you up to the top ever further. You will not regret visiting this place. I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Mountain cable car
The Santa Cova Funicular, located at the lower station, is a distinct cable car that connects three renowned landmarks: Sant Miquels chapel, Santa Cova Chapel, and Sant Jeroni Chapel. These chapels are within a short 10-15 minute walk from their respective stations. Upon arriving at Sant Miquels chapel, an additional 100 meter stroll leads to the awe-inspiring viewpoint called Sant Miquels Cross.

(Translated by Google) The Santa Cova funicular is a convenient way to access the trails leading to Montserrat's religious sites, but the experience is mixed. From the valley station, the ride is pleasant and offers nice views, but the fare is quite high for such a short trip. Additionally, times may be limited, so it's best to check in advance to avoid a long wait. That said, the funicular allows you to save your strength for the walk that follows. Practical for those who want to avoid difficult climbs, but to be budgeted for!

(Translated by Google) The bottom station of the Santa Cova Funicular in Montserrat is more than just a starting point. Located at the bottom of the mountain, this station is the start of a route that connects with the Monumental Rosary and the Santa Cova. It should be noted that the funicular does not reach the hermitage directly, but the path that remains to be traveled is in very good condition and is flanked by the modernist art of the Monumental Rosary. The funicular is an ideal option to avoid the steep climb back after visiting Santa Cova. If your physical condition allows it, I recommend going down on foot and using the funicular for the return, thus connecting to the rack station located in Plaça de la Creu. During my visit, the ticket machine was not working, but the operator of the funicular was kind and allowed us to get on and pay at the top station. This flexibility and friendliness contributed to a positive experience. The funicular service is regular, with departures every 20 minutes. In high season, the hours are from 10 am to 2/4 of 6 pm. The price of a single ticket for adults is €3.90, although return tickets can be purchased and combined with the Sant Joan funicular. Montserrat, Anoia. Saturday, May 13, 2023. Montserrat, Anoia. (Translated by Google) The lower station of the Santa Cova funicular, from which you can (and should) go to the cave or grotto where in 880 shepherds found the miraculous statue of the Madonna and Child “Black Madonna”. Walk there for 20 minutes at an accelerated pace, first the road goes down, then goes up. The road is called “The Path of Prayer”. It is decorated with sculptural compositions on religious themes. At the end of the path I expected to see a cave, but I saw a chapel. Then I remembered that holy places are not left in the open air, but chapels or temples are built over them. This Catholic chapel houses a replica of the Montserrat Madonna. Locals revere this place and come to the Madonna with flowers. Personally, I liked the “Path of Prayer” much more than the walk through the mountains at the top, where the Sant Joan funicular takes you. If there the mountains are somewhere in the distance, then here they surround you on all sides and you can touch them. The chapel closes at 16-30, the last funicular goes up to the monastery, in my opinion, also at 16-30. Check with the station attendants and keep an eye on the time. A one-way ticket costs €3.40, a round-trip ticket costs €6. If you have time, I advise you to go down to the cave on foot and go up by cable car. December 2022.

The Montserrat Cable Car | Upper Station offers a scenic and convenient way to reach the famous monastery. Despite its slightly dated appearance, the facility is well-maintained with no reported breakdowns. Visitors can enjoy stunning views during the quick and reasonably priced ride, making it a must-do experience when traveling to or from Montserrat. The station is easily accessible, and the transparent pricing adds to the overall positive experience.

The experience was enjoyable, but note that the area isn’t stroller or wheelchair-friendly. If possible, opt for a baby carrier instead of a stroller. If you’re not afraid of heights, then this is probably the best and most scenic way of getting to the top of the mountain. If you’re arriving into Montserrat by train, I would advise pre-purchasing the journey along with your train ticket at the vending machine at Placa Espanya - it’s about €31.90 for return metro and furnicular ride. The Basílica de Montserrat is home to the small wooden Virgin of Montserrat, which is displayed behind protective glass. Visitors can see the royal orb cradled in her hand, ready to receive the touch of the faithful. Overall, Montserrat offers a unique blend of natural beauty and spiritual significance, making it a must-visit.

Monumental Basilica, close to the gods, perched in glorious, otherworldly scenery. All the more impressive when you think of the passage of time since its foundation. St. Ignatious of Loyola prayed and reflected here. Artistically impressive interior with so many lamps! Our Lady of Montserrat is a must see. Please don't leave the area without a visit to the art museum, I was dumbfounded by the staggering amount of 'greats' on exhibit (including our own Scully).
Jean K — Google review
Tucked high in the jagged Montserrat mountain range of Catalonia, the Basilica de Montserrat is more than a religious site—it is a soul-stirring fusion of natural majesty, architectural brilliance, and deep spiritual heritage. Rising dramatically from the cliffs, this sacred place draws pilgrims and travelers alike with its extraordinary beauty and profound sense of peace. A Church in the Clouds The first impression of Montserrat is unforgettable. Set nearly 1,200 meters above sea level, the basilica appears to emerge directly from the rock face—an awe-inspiring sight against the backdrop of rugged peaks and sweeping valleys. The journey to reach it, whether by road, cable car, or funicular, feels like a pilgrimage in itself, rewarded at the summit by one of Spain’s most extraordinary landmarks. Architecture That Lifts the Spirit Inside and out, the basilica is breathtaking. The exterior blends Gothic and Renaissance styles with Catalan character, anchored by a stately façade that opens into a grand courtyard. But it’s the interior that truly astonishes. The sanctuary glows with soft light, intricate carvings, and gold accents that guide the eye upward toward the arched ceiling. Elaborate chapels, colorful stained glass windows, and ornate altars create an atmosphere that is both majestic and intimate. The sense of holiness is palpable—this is not just a church, but a sacred refuge suspended between heaven and earth. At its heart is the Virgin of Montserrat, affectionately known as La Moreneta (the Black Madonna). Housed in an elevated chamber above the main altar, this 12th-century wooden statue is one of Spain’s most revered icons. Pilgrims come from around the world to touch her hand and offer prayers, creating a deeply moving spiritual experience. A Living Monastic Tradition Montserrat is also home to a functioning Benedictine monastery, where monks continue centuries-old traditions of prayer and music. Visitors may be fortunate enough to hear the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe, whose angelic voices fill the basilica with sacred song during daily performances. A Must-Visit Destination Whether you are religious or not, visiting the Basilica de Montserrat is a transformative experience. The combination of stunning architecture, natural splendor, and spiritual resonance is unmatched. It's a place where silence speaks, beauty uplifts, and history echoes in every stone. Final Thought The Basilica de Montserrat is a crown jewel of Catalonia—magnificent, moving, and utterly unforgettable. Built high upon a mountain, it invites you to slow down, look up, and feel something greater. It is a holy place that truly touches the soul, and a must-visit for anyone seeking inspiration, awe, or simply a moment of peace in one of the most beautiful settings on earth.

The Stairway to Heaven is a striking sculpture made of 9 concrete blocks arranged in a spiral, resembling a staircase reaching towards the sky. Originally popular among influencers for Instagram photos, it's now enclosed behind a fence due to safety concerns. The sculpture symbolizes the pilgrimage and ascent to heaven, offering stunning views from its height. While some find it visually captivating, others feel that the surrounding fence detracts from its beauty.

La Barca Restaurant is highly recommended for its delicious food and super friendly service. The restaurant is known for being a bit more expensive than others, but the quality justifies the price. Some dishes may be on the salty side, but highlights include the beef carpaccio and beef fillet. The location is beautiful with excellent amenities and great service. While there are no English menus, it's definitely worth a visit for a delightful dining experience.
What a great find a local resident advised us to visit, and we weren't disappointed. Three courses with loads of choice, including wine. All for 20 euros and every course I had was delicious. The owner even offered us an after dinner drink.

Food was pretty alright and the service was good. This restaurant is more expensive than the rest but you could tell the moment you set foot in. Overall I think it's quite worth the price though some of the dishes are a bit on the saltish side. The winners are beef carpaccio, and beef fillet. The kids pasta was good as well. As mentioned the cod fish tends to be more saltish.

The menu is interesting. 35 Euro and you pick one item from 4 courses the 4th being desert. The rice dishes can be split between at least 2 people. This lunch was outstanding and would be our largest meal of the day as in the Catalan tradition. 6 of us spent 2 hours sharing food and wine. It was an incredible meal! I hope to come back someday! This is a must stop if you find yourself near Monserrat.

La Barca Restaurant – Fifty Shades of Overcooked I took my girlfriend to La Barca for what was supposed to be a romantic evening. Starters arrived at light speed which was immediately suspicious. The croquettes were glorious little golden grenades, crunchy and creamy, the kind of thing you would happily write poetry about. But the Russian salad was greasy enough to fuel a tractor. My girlfriend normally tears through a salad like a combine harvester but this time she just prodded it while giving me side eye. Something was wrong. Then came the wait. Forty minutes for mains. Forty. By minute twenty I was moaning, “What in the name of holy steak is going on back there?” By minute thirty I was checking the menu again just in case I had accidentally ordered something that needed to be hunted, butchered, and blessed by a priest. By minute forty I was practically narrating my own breakdown out loud and my girlfriend was hissing at me to keep my voice down. When the mains finally arrived I realised silence would have been kinder. My entrecôte, which I had ordered rare, the kind of steak that should bleed seductively when you touch it, had been incinerated. What I got was steak jerky with trust issues. A faint pink smear in the middle, like the last gasp of a dying romance. My girlfriend’s veal with coffee sauce looked like it had been left on a radiator too long. Flavour? None. I moaned again, louder this time, like a man at a football match watching his team concede in the ninety third minute. We did not finish. We could not. The food had defeated us. Dessert was meant to save the day. My crème Catalan was fine if unremarkable, but hers was frozen solid in the middle. Frozen custard. She nearly broke a tooth and I nearly broke into a rant about how this was no longer dining, it was performance art in sadism. And the bill? That was the final showpiece. We tried to leave, queued politely, and the waitress, clearly enjoying my muttering and theatrical sighs, decided to serve another couple in front of us, then seat a new table, bring them drinks, and practically adopt them before even acknowledging we existed. I am convinced she was prolonging my agony for sport. By the time we escaped I was worn out from the moaning, my girlfriend was embarrassed, and the romance had been cooked out of the evening along with my steak.

Very good service and the food was really good. The waiters are very friendly and patient. They do not speak very good english but we managed. They have English menus on line on their website. The best experience we ve had in Catalonia during our 2 weeks stay. Thank you for the food and the really good staff!

I have been going to this restaurant over the past 8 years at least annually when i visit the Monastery and have always been impressed. Something seems to have gone terribly wrong. The sweet lady owner was not there. Only a lost manager and his staff trying to serve lots of clients. The food, second plate paella and meat were terrible. A la carte no longer available. You are just lumped with a fixed menu at €33 per person with supplements up to €10, if you require some of the menu items. No drinks are included. The octopus paella was so disappointing and meat highly undercooked. Spent over €125 and went out promising myself never to return or recommend. Sorry for this review but as before I recommended now I must review my experience.

Day 4

Off the beaten path
For day 4, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like La Moreneta. Not quite as popular as Museum of Montserrat, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 4 hours.

Sant Joan Funicular Lower Station is a steep funicular that takes you to the top of Montserrat mountain, offering stunning views of the monastery and access to hiking paths. It's part of the Tot Montserrat experience, which includes various tickets and access to attractions. Inaugurated in 1918, this funicular provides a breathtaking view of Montserrat mountain and the monastery from a bird's eye perspective.
Must try on visit to Montserrat, you will have some great view at top and also while going down n up to the hill. Tips: 1) It leaves station every 30 minutes. 2) believe the cost was around 20 Euro and its worth 3) Keep water with you and avoid during hot days 3) always use front / 1st cabin of the train to have better views.

I'm glad I stayed in line to ride to the higher section of the mountain! Gorgeous view of Monserrat below. Several options for hiking to even higher points or down to the monastery
Opinion T — Google review
The Sant Joan Funicular is a great way to go even higher above the Montserrat Monastery and enjoy stunning panoramic views. The lower station is easy to find, right next to the monastery area, and everything was well organized. The ride is short but steep and very scenic — the kids loved it! Trains run often, and tickets can be bought at the station or as part of a combo ticket. A fun and memorable experience, highly recommended if you want the best views of Montserrat.

We got on the Sant Joan funicular service as the other one was not in service and we were glad we did. As one goes up, you have great views of the Monastery with the surrounding topography becoming so evident. Can get a bit busy and you might have to jostle around a little if you are keen to take pictures but it's nice all the same. Safe, well maintained. Entry fee applicable. Credit cards accepted. Recommended.
Satish C — Google review
If you have paid more than €30 for two tickets and only find out a staff occupied most premier position on the funicular and no fee paying customers actually can get any decent photos. The lady on the right, at least, had decency of moving away when a customer try to squeeze in for a photo. BUT the one on the left, who stood at the most premier central location from very beginning to the very end and busy taking video/photo herself. Management of Sant Joan Funicular "I WANT A REFUND"!!!!

For tourist, a must ! We went on Friday early September so the queue was not so long. Look back through the glass roof ! The upper station leads to a spectacular viewing point and a short walking trail. A pleasant relaxing experience this of the year.
Tayard D — Google review
We had some extra time during our tour of Montserrat. So glad we rode the Funicular de Sant Joan to the top. The funicular is just over 1,600 feet in length and takes a swift six minutes but is still the steepest funicular in Spain. It’s thoroughly modernized now but has a history dating back to 1918. It’s enough to get your adrenaline going a little if heights unnerve you. But just grab a hand of someone and enjoy the ride. Atop, if able, I recommend you take one of the walking paths a little ways. The views across the other side of the mountain are beautiful.
LANCE S — Google review
It is currently closed but they aren't stating this in any place. The workers from the company told us that it would take 15 minutes to get to the top but the only workaround is to walk around 1 hour.

La Moreneta

Place of worship
When visiting Montserrat, a must-see is the Benedictine abbey and Royal Basilica, home to the revered statue of La Moreneta or The Black Virgin. This 12th-century Romanesque carving is considered the patron saint of Catalonia and has ties to Arthurian legend as it's linked to the Holy Grail's location. The shrine exudes a serene and peaceful atmosphere, with restricted entry to maintain its tranquility.
Beautiful place we come early morning 8:30 , visit the cathedral and we are been lucky, because around 10 it’s full with people’s

If you come to Barcelona, this is like a must visit place. The hill top, the Montserrat, the trails are excellent places to explore. Be sure to come early. It is very crowded past 10 AM. Oh, one thing I hope they could improve is the number of restaurants around there, wish they offer more choices.

Hey there! If you're planning a trip to Spain, make sure to visit Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. Here’s why it’s worth your time: 🏞️ Stunning Views: Nestled in the breathtaking Montserrat mountain range, the views are simply unforgettable. Bring your camera! 🎶 Choir Performance: Don’t miss the famous boys’ choir, Escolania de Montserrat. Their angelic voices are a must-hear. 🗿 Cultural Richness: Check out the Black Madonna statue inside the basilica. It's a significant spiritual icon and worth the photo! 🚶 Hiking Trails: If you love hiking, explore the many trails around. The Sant Jeroni path offers panoramic views that are hard to beat. 🚄 Accessible: It’s an easy train ride away from Barcelona. Plus, the cable car ride up to the abbey is an adventure in itself! 🍽️ Food & Snacks: Try the local market for homemade cheeses and honey. There’s also a cafeteria to grab a bite with a view. 🛍️ Small Shops: Pick up unique souvenirs at the little boutiques and support local artisans. 📚 Museum: The museum hosts works from artists like Picasso and Dali—a surprising cultural treat! Overall, Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey is a blend of spiritual beauty and natural wonder. Perfect for a day trip that satisfies both your eyes and soul! 😊🌄

Highly recommended. Worth visiting site. Though we visited the place in low season (Mid Jan) it took us half an hour to get the tickets from information office. So, If you’re visiting Montserrat in high season you definitely need to book your ticket well in advance and online. Black Madonna is the highlight of this visit.

What an amazing monastery, couldn’t be happier that we decided to make the day trip here; was definitely worth escaping the busy city and making our way to this lovely mountaintop monastery. There is lots of parking. A hotel, gift shops and restaurants, there are gondolas that take you even further up the mountain for a few; would highly recommend visiting if your in and around the Barcelona area.

Serene and peaceful atmosphere. The church entry is restricted to certain number of people every hour. So, be sure to get the token as there might be a wait time. Prayers happen at certain times of the day as well. Check with the security folks for the schedule

awe inspiring though u get very limited time with the Black Madonna
An N — Google review
The statue of Our Lady of Montserrat, sometimes referred to as 'The Virgin of Montserrat', 'The Black Madonna', and 'La Moreneta' (the Dark One), is magnificent to see but to get close to it, the line-up is usually quite long (both tourists and pilgrims) so if this is your mission then on arrival you should head straight to the Abbey and get in the queue. The statue depicts the black Virgin Mary with her right hand stretched out holding the globe (symbolizing the universe) and holding Baby Jesus on her lap. In His left hand Baby Jesus is holding a pine cone (symbol of fertility and everlasting life) and His right hand is stretched out giving blessing. Both the Virgin Mother and Baby Jesus are wearing crowns. If you do get to see The Black Madonna then it is a tradition that you to kiss or touch her hand whilst opening out your other hand to Jesus.

When visiting Montserrat, it's highly recommended to embark on a leisurely hike to St. Michael Cross, Creu de Sant Miquel. This short trek spans approximately 1-1.2km and can be completed in just 15-20 minutes each way, making it accessible for most visitors. The trail leads to the most picturesque viewpoint in Montserrat, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

Where to eat

Even the most seasoned adventurers need a break to chow down some food. Close to La Moreneta, these restaurants are about a 15-minute drive away.

Bar Restaurante Bartomeu

Bar & grill
Bar Bartomeu is highly recommended for its combination plates that come with a drink, main dish, 2 supplements, dessert, and coffee at a great price. The staff is attentive and the place is very clean. It's an authentic Spanish restaurant known for its generous portions. They offer two menus with a variety of options and the quality to price ratio is excellent. Customers are advised to share dishes if they have a small appetite. The staff is ultra-friendly and welcoming.
The best. Huge portions of delicious food at a good price. The crema catalana is the best tasting I had ever, and I live in Spain. Keep in mind that it's a little runny, as the cook explained that he enjoys it like that. And the flavor shows. Very very good!

(Translated by Google) We stopped to eat because the two restaurants before this one did not serve us and since it was very late we wanted to try this one. Luckily they caught us and we were pleasantly surprised. We are glad to have found this place. It deserves 5 stars. It is small, but very clean. They have a menu which you can customize to your liking with the accessories you choose. Abundant portions. In addition to friendly and fast attention. If I had to stop in Monistrol, I would not hesitate to return. Recomendable 100%

(Translated by Google) Authentic and very generous Spanish restaurant. If like me you have a small stomach, don't hesitate to ask to share a dish! The staff is ultra friendly and welcoming! There are 2 menus, one at 16.50 and the other at 14.50 which includes drinks, main courses and desserts. We have a choice on the sides! The value for money is excellent. On the other hand, avoid fruit salad for dessert. The fruit is not fresh. This is a dessert that clearly comes out of a can. There is a parking lot behind to park the car and we are very close to Montserrat. This avoids ending up in hyper-touristy restaurants. We had lunch at 3 p.m., the service was still open.
