The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is a significant historical location near Munich, just an hour away by train. It offers a sobering glimpse into the atrocities of World War II and the Nazi regime. The site features reconstructed cell blocks, photographs, and documents that provide insight into the camp's history. Visitors can join guided tours to learn about the dark chapter in history and pay their respects to the victims.
A must visit for all who wants to know more about the War and a reminder to us living about what the prisoners went through so that we don't allow history like this to repeat itself. The only concentration camp to be functional during the entire 12 years reign of the Nazi party from 1933 to 1945. Also the first concentration camp to be built and was the training and reeducation place of the SS (Nazi army) for all other concentration camps in Europe.

It feels more like an exhibition than a museum—quite disappointing, to be honest. It should convey the horror of what took place there, but it doesn't. The fact that there are regular houses just behind the fence, where people live, blew my mind. What goes through people's heads to make it okay for them to have a view of a death camp from their window?
Waldemar M — Google review
Was easy to get here from the Central Station Hbf in Munich. Take the S2 train to Bahnhof, Dachau, then take a transfer to 726 bus. Will take you there and back. The visitation center has your free toilette, Cafe with food, drinks, and warm coffee and hot chocolate which was well needed for this cold day. The people at the visitor center was nice and spoke English well. Rental an audio tour guide that was useful, but honestly I enjoyed reading all the materials and posters there. The camp was amazing, and everyone was respectful there. Everyone was speaking low for respect, similar to 911 Memorial Museum in NY.

We went with a guided tour with Radius Tours. From Munich, we traveled by train and bus to get to the memorial site. We were with 'German Mark' ...not to be confused with the other Mark 😉 and he provided a lot of insight to the history and development of this memorial site. We came to Munich for Oktoberfest and spent the following morning here. It was sobering, though provoking, impactful, and necessary. You could easily spend the majority of the day here. They do provide self guided audio tours. Someone that we met at our hotel did the audio tour and enjoyed the content. You get a lot of content in the various areas and it's great to see that they are utilizing the space to remember what happened there. It was a very powerful experience.

Absolutely incredibly powerful place to visit. It’s very well presented and managed - combination of extensive museum exhibits with text (multiple languages), artifacts, real life stories, videos, and pictures. Be sure to read as much as possible as you tour. There are memorials and public art throughout the site that represent many different backgrounds of the victims impacted. Careful reconstruction has been done on a few buildings, some original buildings remain, and much of the open ground is there from where original buildings once stood. We spent nearly 4.5 hours there and could have easily spent longer as learned lots. Audio guides in different languages are available.
Dave D — Google review
Worth going and worth checking it out for lots of reasons. It has a canteen for lunch, a book shop, a Carpark. You can follow guided tour by the centre, just head to the reception to join the tour (think is 3 euro per person) when you get there, this can’t be booked online. There are one at 11am and one at 1pm I think (in English). There are also some in German. You can walk into a small gas chamber used for testing poison on people, and see the crematorium used to burn the bodies. Scary but real. All in front of your eyes. And many more scary details. A lesson not to be missed and always be remembered. The visit is free if you don’t follow the tour. You can do the visit using audio guide too.
K Y — Google review
There are no words to describe the emotions you get from visiting this site! It's definitely a must while in Munich. We went as part of a tour, which I highly recommend as you learn so much from the guide! This was a lifetime experience for sure!
Bethzaida C — Google review
We had a short trip to the memorial site. It is impressive although not many of the original elements are left. The space and the prison part gives you that feeling of hopelessness. It is humbling and creates awareness on the horrors man can inflict on others and how much can one indure. We should be grateful that we don't know any of it.

Crematorium

Concentration camp memorial site
Historical landmark
The Crematorium is a somber yet informative place that offers a glimpse into the historical events that transpired there. The site is filled with information signs detailing the happenings in each room, providing visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the past. Exploring the surrounding camp also yields valuable insights into its history. It's advisable to wear comfortable shoes due to the pebbled terrain. Additionally, outside the building and in the green area lie points of interest not found on maps.
The crematorium area at Dachau is among the most somber parts of the memorial site. Here, visitors find the original and enlarged crematoria, the gas chamber disguised as a shower room, and the stark industrial remnants of the machinery of death. While records suggest the Dachau gas chamber was not used for mass extermination as in Auschwitz, its very presence underscores the system of terror and cruelty that operated here. Walking through these brick buildings, from the ovens to the “Brausebad” doorway, is deeply unsettling. The emptiness of the rooms and the utilitarian construction emphasize how methodically life was devalued and destroyed. Outside, a statue of an emaciated prisoner honors the dead while warning the living, a reminder that this part of the site cannot be bypassed or softened. This space is not easy to confront, but it is essential. It anchors Dachau’s memorial in undeniable truth and preserves the evidence of atrocities that must never be forgotten.

We, the new generation, try to understand what happened when we visit this place, no matter how much has been explained. Every time, I get goosebumps. Just leave with a prayer, show respect. I deduct 1 point because there is no support for every language. Other than that, the historical texture is perfect.
Hetz N — Google review
This part here represents the crematorium. This is one of the most infamous concentration camps. It has a lot of information regarding the war and the place itself including the prisoners. Very informative and well preserved for other generations to learn about their history.
Alessandro S — Google review
Very memorable and sad. It is awful to think about what some humans can do to each other. It is worth a visit though.
Harry — Google review
Writing a positive review about visiting a concentration camp can be sensitive, as these sites are places of deep historical significance and human tragedy… with that being said, visiting Dachau was a deeply moving experience that left a lasting impact on me. The site is meticulously maintained, allowing visitors to engage with the history in a respectful and meaningful way. From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was somber yet reflective. The site provided invaluable insights into the lives of those who suffered there, emphasizing the importance of remembering this dark chapter in history. The exhibits were well-organized and informative, presenting the facts with sensitivity and depth. What stood out to me was the dedication of the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to educate visitors and ensure that the memories of those who endured unimaginable hardships are honored. Their commitment to fostering understanding and promoting tolerance is evident throughout the visit. I left with a renewed sense of gratitude and a commitment to sharing what I learned. This experience is essential for anyone looking to understand history and reflect on humanity’s capacity for both good and evil. I highly recommend the visit to anyone who values history, empathy, and the importance of remembrance.
Jamie H — Google review
Felt very sad, some people cried there. Used to tie hands in gas chambers let people die.
Lakshmireddy B — Google review
A place to call the bitter past and the suffering. This will remind a black period forever and not going to fade. This has not happened in Palaeolithic or Neolithic era. This took place after industrial revolutions. This is a remember to the mankind that man was kind.
Konamaneti R — Google review
I got goosebumps. I don't understand why people give this place 5 STARS?!!! A place where people were poisoned and burned after believing that it would be a shower!!

Museum
Gemäldegalerie Dachau is a museum showcasing artworks created in the town's artist colony dating back to the 19th century. The gallery, established in 1974 alongside the Documentation Centre for Furniture and Wood Carving, features two exhibition rooms displaying paintings and drawings. These pieces were crafted by local artists who were influenced by Germany's political changes during the first half of the 19th century.
Small but very interesting museum, showing the paintings of local artists. It has a lot of rare, almost unknown paintings. Can be a nice addition to a visit of Dachau, together with the Dachau Palace. The museum is very well organized. We especially appreciated the benches with the explanation in multiple languages. You just need to pull the stick with the description from the bench.

(Translated by Google) The painting gallery in Dachau organizes very interesting exhibitions. Because apart from what we will always, unfortunately, associate this city with, in the 19th century it was a place very eagerly visited by artists, mainly painters. Dachau is beautifully situated on the rivers, there is a wonderful baroque palace and many captivating landscapes. There is talk of a painting colony in Dachau. Now the gallery invites you to the exhibition "Zauberhaftes Capri". The island near Naples is a brand in itself. And the paintings show its beauty seen through the eyes of artists. Such post-holiday reminiscences. There are about 80 paintings and prints on display here. There is also Ludwik Dill and Arthur Langhammer. I sincerely recommend it. New exhibition from November 10, 2023. Painting from the Belgian Kunstkolenie Tuvern. Beautiful landscapes. Worth seeing. Wyspa niedaleko Neapolu to marka sama w sobie. A obrazy pokazują jej piękno widziane oczami artystów. Takie powakacyjne reminiscencje. Jest tu wystawionych około 80 obrazów i grafik. Jest i Ludwik Dill i Arthur Langhammer. Szczerze polecam. Od 10 listopada 2023 nowa wystawa. Malarstwo z belgijskiej Kunstkolonie Tuvern. Piękne krajobrazy. Warto zobaczyć.

(Translated by Google) An architecturally unobtrusive gallery with over 100 years of history, the first forerunner of which was in Dachau Castle by the later last Bavarian King Ludwig III. (1908) was opened. In the permanent exhibition, it primarily deals with the history of the Dachau artists' colony, which, like so many, emulated the model of the 'Barbizon School' in the mid-19th century and sought new inspiration in untouched nature and beyond the academies. The collection is spiced up with various loans, including works by the top international artists Carl Spitzweg, Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann. The bright and very spacious floor above is reserved for special exhibitions - and is currently occupied by a lovely show about the Kronberg/Taunus artists' colony. Even if the overall presentation/hanging seems unimaginative and dull, I was impressed by the variety of exhibits (paintings, watercolors, graphics, sculpture). If the responsible association could find staff who would complement its art treasure with charm and knowledge, they would have a flawless gem on their hands that every visitor to Munich should put on their 'to-do list'.

Had a fantastic time at the museum! Took my daughters to share some of Dachau’s early history. To all my English speakers. This is not the one to miss. This is an incredible wonderfully quaint yet impressively full museum worthy of such a quaint yet wonderful town. This is an incredible museum that tells the history of the town outside of their wartime difficulties around the turn of the 20th century. This town deserves so much more than just the memorial. If this town is not recognised soon a german jewel ripe with beauty and overflowing with history would be lost. MUST VISIT

Great experience here. The lady at reception was wonderful! She did it all. Checkin, was flawless. Even though the rooms are older and there was no lift the hotel was delightful. A nice hotel in the middle of Dachau. Somewhat noisy, if you get rooms facing the main road. We had windows open at night due to summer heat and constantly heard traffic. Pillows could use an upgrade, they were flat and small. Breakfast was plentiful, you order the night before: we had cured meat/cheese platters, croissants and rolls, as well as apples and apricots and yogurt. Conveniently located to the castle and all things downtown.
Nadia B — Google review
Very dated hotel, but the worst thing was the rude personnel. Our room was only made up for one person when we arrived. I immediately went down to the reception and asked for another set of bedding and towels. Half an hour later nothing had happened so I went down again to ask the receptionist who was on the phone in personal calls and I was addressed with “but you’re not going to sleep now anyway”. And I said in fact I had planned to take a nap and a shower after my long trip please and thank you. The receptionist then brought the bedding and continued to scold me and call me rude. One of the worst services I’ve received in Germany.

Got there at 9. No more food was put out for ayce, so whatever there is what was left to eat. This is 2 hours before closing. Food was absolutely terrible, clearly everything except the sushi restaurant supply sourced and sushi was terribad. No flavor or sauces, miniscule amount of fish.
Chris K — Google review
The staff is kind, we felt really well! The food though is okay, the fried things tasted old oil, and the presentation was a bit careless (the cherry tomato sushi gave a bad impression). The running sushi is fun and a nice idea. The sweets were super cute, we loved the pig one. The experience overall was better than the food itself.
Marmita E — Google review
Terrible! We ordered bottles of water and they brought us faucet water, and charged us as if it were bottled. The food was bad and the hygiene was worse. Don't go there!

"Pan-asian" restaurant at the AEZ mall top floor with great running sushi (one of the biggest in the northern-Munich area) and hot buffet around noon and evening... they even got free ice-cream :D Friendly staff. Good prices, even better when you're hungry.

Austrian restaurant
When exploring the culinary scene in the area, a visit to Steirer is an absolute highlight. Nestled on Schleissheimerstrasse 27, this restaurant offers a delightful journey through authentic Austrian cuisine that showcases a deep passion for quality ingredients and meticulous preparation. Diners rave about the thoughtfully curated menu, which features dishes that are not only visually stunning but also tantalizingly flavorful, appealing to all taste buds.
Very interesting restaurant. There are probably only ever predefined menus, but these offer enough variety and of course flavour. The atmosphere is much more personal than in other restaurants, very pleasant.

Sights & Landmarks
Dachau Palace is a captivating destination that invites visitors to explore its rich history and stunning architecture. Once a vibrant hub for artists, this baroque palace now stands as a reminder of both the beauty and darker chapters of the town's past. Surrounded by meticulously designed gardens that date back to the Renaissance, guests can wander through geometric flower beds and admire preserved pavilions offering breathtaking views of Munich and the Alps.
Such a great garden view terrace! Highly recommend to take a walk in the garden.

If you are already in Dachau, definitely worth a visit. Not so sure about coming all the way from Munich It has just one ceremony hall, but a beautiful one. The gardens are very nice. The observation desk on the left has a beautiful panorama of Munich

it is a restaurant that opens from 2.PM. surrounded by trees and a beautiful garden in the back.the panoramic view from this hill it's whats worth the visit. u reach the castle from the s-bahn station with the 719 Bus through the old city streets.

Verry nice place to visit , nice view over the city and surroundings.
Gabriel B — Google review
Beautiful palace in Dachau located up on the mountain with beautiful views over the city of Dachau and towards Munich. One can easily spot the O2-Tower as well as the Allianz Arena on clear days you'll see the alpine range in the background. Worth a visit during the whole year. Especially also the gardens where a wide range of flowers and different sorts of apple trees are cultivated.
David M — Google review
IMHO the best palace garden! Huge variety of flowers for such a small place, always clean and well-maintained. Magnificent view of Munich area because it is on top of a small hill, and for the same reason very few pests! Easily accessible with entrances on three sides. There is free Wi-Fi near the non-restaurant entrance. There is also a free public washroom in the back alley opposite St. Jakob church, next to a TEDi store. The palace itself isn't spectacular, as reflected in the cheap entrance fee. But there's a chill restaurant where you can dine inside.
Mobile C — Google review
A very sobering experience. There is a warning when entering that it's not recommended for 12 and under. I had my 14 year old granddaughter with me and wished that we skipped the last two rooms. Otherwise a great learning experience I'm glad we did. The entry is free of charge, but there are opportunities to donate some cash along the way.

(Translated by Google) I find the goods here extremely expensive. While I can understand that you have to charge a lot given the amount of staff involved, some things are simply way overpriced. 😱 The salespeople are all very friendly and helpful and give good advice, but if I don't absolutely need something right away, I'd rather buy it at a cheaper hardware store.

(Translated by Google) Now, unfortunately, I have to complain. We went to the aquarium in Weilheim today to get four goldfish for our pond. The very unfriendly employee in the department refused to sell them to us. The reason given was that at least 5,000 liters would be needed for four goldfish, each measuring 2.5 cm. We had already inquired in advance how many liters were needed for four fish. The result was 50 liters per fish of this size. Unfortunately, the 50 km trip was in vain. We find it a shame, as we've always enjoyed shopping in this department. Motivated and knowledgeable staff would be an advantage. Otherwise, a very nice department.

(Translated by Google) It was a very special shopping experience: I'm a goldfish lover and wanted to buy aquarium plants. Without being asked, I had to listen to, among other things, that goldfish are the most boring fish ever and that they eat everything anyway, all in a disinterested tone. The salesperson then abruptly ended the conversation with, "I'm on my lunch break now." Perhaps a training course in "customer-oriented behavior" could help here? Ablöse, on the other hand, was friendly, listened, and acted customer- and service-oriented.

A cafe inside an old castle what else do you need to say ? The place has very nice homemade cakes and a big choice. Rating it with 5 stars because over the past years somehow the size of the cake and the service quality degraded over min. 10-15 visits we did. Also I somehow don't enjoy to much their cappuccino I believe this could be upleveld by some barista training :) Still it stays a place to go in summer on the lovely terrace and a stroll through the gardens afterward or if you want to enjoy simple a decent interior and a good cake.

Was travelling in the city and happened to be staying somewhere nearby this restaurant, so gave it a try. The menu has a wide variety of Asian dishes, from soup to main dishes to rice or noodles. Ordered a Tom Yum soup and a fried egg noodles, both were delicious even though they might not be cooked in the most authentic Asian ways. Perhaps the restaurant is trying to appeal more to the locals. The staff were very nice and friendly, and the environment of the place was super cozy. Overall, a great place to hang out if you’re passing by the area👍🏼👍🏼

The restaurant Schlosswirtschaft Mariabrunn features beautiful countryside views, good food and beers, and a beer garden. It's a great place to enjoy a meal or relax with friends.
The cook and clerk there were so nice and kind with pleasant smiles and humors. The Spareribs, Pommes and Eiskaffe were so yummy. Even though the temperature was 31 degrees, it was still cool and just right for enjoying a nap under the shadows of the giant trees with some winds.

Hidden gem, the best biergarten in the greater Munich area! A must visit if you're living in Munich. Easier to reach by car, but public transport is also available. You need to walk around 20 mins though. The setting is just amazing. Seated area in the nature surrounded by trees and a monastery. The best setting ever. Concerning food, i would go for the ribs. Large portion and tasty.
Rawad B — Google review
Easily one of the best meals I've ever had. The venison goulash with blaukraut was unreal. They were really great with our four kids too. They had some kids books and coloring materials and were really kind. The place itself is located out in the country maybe 20 minutes from Munich. It's a beautiful view of the city with the Alps in the background on a clear day. Lovely beer garden and vibe.
Taylor S — Google review
Perhaps one of the most relaxed and beautiful beergarden in Bavaria. Located in the historical grounds of Mariabrunn offering (selfservice in the beergarden) a great variety of typical bavarian food (grilled chicken with potatoe salad, spareribs with fingerlicking bbq sauce, "steckerlfisch" whole fish grilled over charcoal, pork sausages with sauerkraut) and good local beer (half litre or full litre). You can even bring your own picnic and sit on long tabels under the large chestnut trees. Your young kids will enjoy the playground too. On your way back to the carpark, stop at the giftshop offering homemafe bread, local honey and lovely gifts. This is a must stop during a bike or walking tour along the Amper river or for anyone who would love to experience bavarian hospitality.
