Badlands National Park in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Badlands National Park, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Badlands National Park is known for its striking layered rock formations, colorful buttes, and sharply eroded pinnacles that showcase millions of years of geologic history. Visitors can spot wildlife such as bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and pronghorn along scenic drives like Badlands Loop Road. The park offers hiking trails with expansive prairie vistas and overlooks that are especially dramatic at sunrise and sunset. Its relatively dark skies also make it a good place for stargazing on clear nights.
With favorites like White River Valley Overlook, National Grasslands Visitor Center, and Cliff Shelf Trail, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Badlands Saloon & Grille and Dairy Queen Grill & Chill so you can get the best taste of Badlands National Park while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Wall Drug Store is a must-visit 76,000-sq.-ft. attraction in Wall, South Dakota. It started as a small pharmacy during the Great Depression and has since expanded to include gift shops, eateries, and even a backyard theme park. The store is famous for its American charm and offers free ice water to visitors. With over 3,000 signs around the world, it has become a global tourist attraction.
Must see road trip stop. A little or lot of pretty much everything. Plenty of fun photo opportunities and areas to stretch legs from long drives. Food is okay but not the reason for stop. Lines move very fast and organized chaos. I'd save room for Ice cream or donuts (cake like texture)
John H — Google review
This rest stop on the way to Badlands National Park is advertised numerous times on I-90. They offer free iced water, but the cups are small and not cold enough, and the dispenser is a bit odd. We had dinner there, and the prices were reasonable. They also offer coffee, but the cups are small. The mall is large and sells various items, but it's cluttered. This mall supports the economy of the town of Wall. This time in Wall, many motorcycle enthusiasts participated in the 2025 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
MC C — Google review
You have seen the signs, and you’re wondering if it’s worth the stop; and the answer is yes and no. It’s definitely a tourist trap, but the kids will think it’s awesome. The free ice water is more like tap water, there are a ton of souvenirs of all kinds, and even some reasonably priced t-shirts. The donuts are expensive; I posted a picture with the prices as of August 2025. They are big and rather tasty, but I wasn’t impressed with the icing. We were staying in Wall in order to visit the Badlands, so the drug store was nice to visit while in town.
Sharon M — Google review
Giant eclectic collection of stores selling everything from souvenirs to diners to a chapel to gold mining It’s a little detour off the highway but was underwhelming and confusing to navigate considering the plethora of advertising. I’d only recommend stopping by if you aren’t pressed for time. The cafe / diners have decent food for solid prices but the rest of it just feels like a tourist trap.
Kevin W — Google review
Saw about 20 billboards about this place on our drive, Thought we would have a stop and have a look. Glad we did this place has everything you need and lots to see from a 80 Foot Dinosaur to hats boots and food. Fresh Donuts and other sweets treats. Biscuits and gravy and still 5C Coffee ! Highly recommend stopping at Wall Drug stores. Plenty to see and plenty to buy. Parking is really easy also! Does get busy by midday but they have an overflow car park. All staff are friendly, nice clean restrooms
Liam — Google review
This is a unique location. All the stores are under one giant building and you can walk through each one without having to go outside. Very interesting. Lots of cool things, and items. Good food. Hey cmon, they don’t have any Espresso which is my complaint. Not even the fudge shop had espresso! What’s up with that?
Maloree A — Google review
Suuuch a cool place. We started seeing all the fun signs about 40 miles away and got really excited to check it out. It's huge. We got elk burgers and their 5 cent cups of coffee. Everything was amazing. The decor is incredible. Really takes you back in time and feels so western. We were so glad for all the signs because it quickly became a favorite from our road trip.
Kyler T — Google review
This place is more than just a store. It is also a restaurant and donut shop, and they have a ton of statues and decorations where you can get your picture taken. They have tea that costs five cents and free water (though it was not ice cold as they originally mentioned). There is plenty of seating. The store has everything. It is a bit on the pricier side, but there are lots of options for a convenience store. There are also several other stores nearby that compete with prices. Also, there are some other notable landmarks nearby, like a dinosaur statue and the giant jackolope. They are not on site but close by. Apparently, this South Dakota store is arguably more well known for South Dakota tourism than Mount Rushmore, whether you want to believe it or not. If you are in South Dakota, this is a must visit!

Nestled in a rural area near Wall, South Dakota, Badlands Frontier Cabins offers an authentic and comfortable lodging experience. The seasonal complex features 33 custom-built log cabins equipped with modern amenities and private bathrooms, all serviced by daily housekeeping. Guests can enjoy the serene surroundings while being just 6 miles from the entrance to Badlands National Park. Families can also take advantage of nearby campgrounds for a unique outdoor experience.
This rental is a 100% win. Cabins are larger than a hotel room, very clean and comfortable. Rustic decor is beautiful. Check-in was smooth and efficient. I received a text this morning asking if they could do anything to make our stay better or if we needed recommendations for dinner. I would stay here again and highly recommend. Only 8 minutes from the entrance to Badlands National Park.

Wow I don’t know where to start. So first off wow beautiful room, very spotlessly clean and smelled amazing. The bed was perfectly wonderful nice and soft great amount of pillows and finally a place that gives you more than just 2 towels and wash clothes. The bonus was the absolute amazing water softener wow was I ever happy. Now I will say it was very quiet which I love but it is the end of season so the place wasn’t packed.

Great experience, would recommend! Family of 6, 2 adults, 4 children ages 1-12. We stayed in a family suite with two beds and a pullout couch. Beds were incredibly comfortable. Bathroom was large. Kitchen and dining area was great to have. We stayed one night while we were passing through visiting the badlands. Great proximity to badlands, wall drug and the freeway. Very clean and sizable rooms. Staff was incredibly friendly. Great playground for the kids. We were only there from about 8p-9a. Would stay again!

We enjoyed our stay here to visit The Badlands National Park. Quick access to the park especially for a sunrise point. The staff is kind and helpful. The cabins are private, cozy bedding, soundproof. Complimentary popcorn and breakfast coupons for a nearby Saloon breakfast. A nice little store with essentials on site. It was a pleasant stay. Nice playground area for children to unwind.
Sharon M — Google review
Five stars all the way! Excellent accommodations! Clean, comfortable beds with a fun vibe! Well stocked store. The staff could not have been more friendly and accessible! They set the bar high for the rest of our “out west” vacation! Perfect location for visiting the Badlands NP. We would much rather be here than in the park itself overnight. Thanks again to the folks at BFI!

The Badlands Frontier Cabins are a great place to stay in Wall. We stayed at the cabin with two queen beds and a pull out mattress in the couch which worked nice for our family of 4. The beds were comfortable, pillows nice. Rooms were clean. It's a great location for visiting Wall Drug and the Badlands! They have a nice little convenience store on site too which was nice to grab stuff at prior to heading out. We'd recommend this place to stay in the future!
Grant M — Google review
The cabin was wonderfully decorated, clean with comfortable beds. However, we had booked a 2 night stay and needed to change it to a one night stay. We called 36 hours in advance to change it but Laura (was rude) and said we’d be charged a full night for canceling. Not at all willing to work with us. The establishment had plenty of open cabins. She was NOT flexible at all. We will return to the area but not to the Frontier Cabins.

Individual cabins well located near Badlands National Park and Wall Drug. Comfy beds and cozy cabin decor. Our dog liked it too. Green space for pet relief was larger than most.

Sage Creek Campground

4.7
(414)
Campground
Sage Creek Campground, located on the west side of Badlands National Park's North Unit, offers a genuine and primitive camping experience. It is free to use and provides an authentic encounter with the rugged environment of the area. Visitors may even have the chance to see the park's resident bison wandering through. Despite lacking nearby amenities, this campground is highly regarded for its vibrant beauty and communal atmosphere, making it one of South Dakota's top camping destinations.
It is a great free campground with prairie dogs right next to your tent and bison roaming around! There are trails running up the hills right around the site, so you have easy access. Pit toilets did not smell bad either and trash/recycling are available. You are in the more prairie area of the park here. We arrived at 2pm and the campground was half full and filled up by night (travelling at the end of June)
Amelia M — Google review
Great free campground. Bison walking through the camp in the morning was great fun. Bison guarding the pit toilet in the dark and being aggressive towards me was less fun. Everyone cleared out around 8-10am, if you get there around then you'll have your pick of sites. We arrived at like 10pm and scooped up the last campsite.
Michael — Google review
Staying here was the highlight of our trip. Such a cool experience having the bison walk right through your campsite!! We woke up to one breathing right outside our tent. If you give them space and move slowly they are fine, and eventually go on their way. The prairie dogs were fun too. It was very quiet at night and the night sky was beautiful! The bathrooms were clean as well.
Cheyenne P — Google review
Very windy. Not every spot had a covered table. The covers did not block the wind. We got some excellent night time photography and it felt safe. Plenty of vault toilets. The coyotes made wonder background noise and didn't bother campers.
Kayla C — Google review
Drove from Maine with my wife. We did Badlands then Yellowstone. Needless to say after staying at Badlands for 3 days then driving to Yellowstone and staying there for 4 days...we went back to Badlands and stayed for another 4 days!...we tent camped and hiked. Absolutely love Sage Creek!!!!!!....hot as hell but in a nice dry way unlike the heat you get in Maine. Wildlife everywhere and waking up to prairie dogs and over 100 bison is just next level.
Aaron D — Google review
Sage Creek is definitely not for everyone, but I love it. Pit toilets and no water aren’t the most fun but it’s a pretty good way to keep some of the riffraff away. Being a somewhat inconvenient distance from anywhere is also a big plus because you’ll have a much more intimate experience with wildlife and nature, especially compared to the enormous campground on the east side of the park. It gets crowded, but if you get there early, you’re likely to find a site. Afternoons are generally hot, so be prepared. A tarp can help, especially if you score a site with a shelter. Steer clear of the bison. They’ll wander into your site, so be prepared and keep your distance. One of the campers got head butted just after we left the campground this year.
Hal E — Google review
Primitive camping. Vault toilets, tables. No fires, buffalo came through every day right up to the sites. Tons of prairie dogs right in the campground. They have fleas that carry the bubonic plague. Be careful with pets, you can be infected.
Donald P — Google review
This place is rustic and not for everyone. Vault toilets and zero hook ups. Right in the Badlands. 30 minutes from Wall, SD and the Interstate. Watching prairie dogs play and snack, waking to bison, coyote’s serenading us and a fullmoon were just what we needed! We would stay again.

Roberts Prairie Dog Town is a lively section of Badlands National Park in South Dakota, accessible via a dirt road. Here, visitors can witness the uninhibited and vocal wild prairie dogs in their natural habitat. The area is also home to various wildlife such as bison and bighorn sheep, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts.
Very cute. You hear them circulating and chatter as you watch for little prairie dogs popping up out of their holes. Great stop for kids to try and spot the most little critters.
Alissa D — Google review
You’ll probably see more Prairie Dogs coming in the nearby park entrance than here but it was still neat nonetheless! Tons of buffalo near/on the road coming in. Be careful coming around the bends and over the hills. We had one chasing after our car for a sec that we didn’t see around a bend! Drive carefully.
VDms_ — Google review
This is a must-see here. Tons and tons of prairie dogs, and there were a few bison and a pack of pronghorn nearby. Unfortunately there's some kind of disease being spread by bugs, so avoid the prairie dogs even more than you would normally.
MojoBen5235 — Google review
Might have been the highlight of our trip. My son has always been obsessed with meerkats and prairie dogs so being able to get upclose was spectacular. You can buy unsalted peanuts from the shop for just $1 a bag.
Jennifer M — Google review
It is a beautiful drive and so peaceful! Totally worth a visit. Saw Prairie dogs, burrowing owls, bison and antelope!
Leslie S — Google review
Drove the 5 miles out to Roberts Prairie Dog Town from Highway 240. It is a beautiful drive along a somewhat wahboarded road. This was our third trip out here in as many days. Didn't see a lot of prairie dog activity here, but got to see a herd of antelope and a few bison on the trip. Pinnacle gate area had more prairie dog activity than anywhere else in the park.
Brian A — Google review
Had a fun time here and enjoyed being able to feed the prairie dogs it’s been on my bucket list forever

100 perfect worth the to this location. Prairie Dogs literally everywhere with a splash of bison. Views are wonderful as well. If you have kids it's a must, but adults will enjoy it the same! Drove to this location in Thursday around 6 and there were very few other drivers around.

Pinnacles Overlook is a must-visit spot in Badlands National Park, offering breathtaking views of the park's rugged natural formations and wildlife. It is considered one of the best overlooks in the area, with sweeping vistas that make it a popular choice for sunset viewing. While it's recommended for late-day visits, there are still plenty of details to explore during midday.
Pinnacles Overlook is one of the best viewpoints in Badlands! The layered rock formations stretch for miles, especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset. It’s an easy stop with a short walk to a dramatic cliffside view. When we visited, we were lucky to spot a mountain goat just below the edge—such a cool surprise! Peaceful, scenic, and a great place to pause and take in the scale of this unique landscape.
Marta S — Google review
The Badlands is like another planet. We thought Death Valley was, too, but this was just amazing around every turn. The drive wasn't bad even on the outside of some high up places since you're driving across the top of the hills, and I don't like driving up high but I was okay. There were a lot of turn offs and several places to get out and just walk. It was about 22 miles for the scenic loop part and it took us about 4 hours with stopping and walking about 7 or 8 times....just drive slow and enjoy it. We were there on a Monday at 10am in July and we had the road to ourselves a lot of the time because we started in Wall and not the other entrance by the visitor center off the interstate. By the time we got to the end, there were a ton of cars coming towards us so it seems that's the busiest entrance where you'll have a lot of people following you. I'd recommend stopping at the. Visitors center at the end. I would go back anytime I'm out there.
Shannon M — Google review
Hard to rate any overlook in Badlands less than 5 stars. This overlook is very big with plenty of parking. It boasts 2.5 levels of viewing vistas with decent stretch of official and unofficial walking paths (to cliff edges and hilltops including across the road). It is located almost immediately to the east of the north entrance (big foot road). Many visitors who are short on time may have chosen to west on Sage creek road and ended up missing a grand full 360 vista view.
Jerome M — Google review
Amazing & other-worldly experience. The Bandlands Loop drive is 100% worth the time! We were there at sunset for gorgeous views & completed the majority of the drive after dark. We plan to drive through again on our way back east to see it during the day.

Yellow Mounds Overlook is a picturesque spot in Badlands National Park, offering stunning views of mounds with bands of yellow, orange, and beige rock. The area is particularly popular during sunset or late afternoon, providing an array of vibrant colors and formations for photographers to capture. While the landscape may appear washed out during midday, the unique spires and crags still offer plenty to explore.
Incredible views! The best spot within the Badlands Park without a doubt. The best views can be seen if you park and then walk up the small hill to see the spectacular mounds all around you. It's simply breathtaking scenery. My absolutely favorite part. Everywhere you look is a different perspective that adds to the beauty of this area. The pictures don't really capture how amazing this spot really is.

I recently visited the Yellow Mountain Overlook in the Badlands, and the experience was nothing short of spectacular. The panoramic views of the unique rock formations, rolling hills, and vast prairies were simply stunning. The overlook provided a perfect vantage point to take in the breathtaking scenery and capture some amazing photos. The tranquility of the area, combined with the awe-inspiring natural beauty, made for a truly unforgettable experience. I highly recommend adding the Yellow Mountain Overlook to your Badlands itinerary – it's a must-see for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike. *Tips:* - Arrive at sunrise or sunset for the best light - Bring a camera to capture the stunning views - Take your time to soak in the natural beauty and tranquility *Recommended for:* Nature enthusiasts, photographers, those seeking breathtaking views

Panorama Point offers breathtaking views of the Badlands, with its expansive vistas and striking colors. It is considered one of the best photography points in the national park and a prime spot for witnessing stunning sunsets. The location is ideal for capturing memorable moments and panoramic scenes. While there are no opportunities to walk down into the hills, visitors can revel in the beauty of the badlands stretching out before them.
Panorama Point was a beautiful stop along our Badlands adventure! This is one among many viewing spots in Badlands national park. The entire Badlands area offers amazing views, trails and wildlife viewing. Carry lots of water, fill gas tank and drive through the loop. Plan a whole day if you are in to hiking. The entire area looks completely different depending on the sunlight. Enjoy the beautiful sunset from some spots.

One of the best for the Badlands NP. It has an enormous parking lot and a huge area with walking paths that lead to the view point where you get stunning panoramic views of the buttes and the Badlands. Nestled within the stunning Badlands National Park, the White River Valley Overlook is a breathtaking destination that offers expansive views of the park's western landscape. Located near the iconic Castle rock formations, this overlook is conveniently situated close to the visitor center, making it an accessible spot for travelers seeking to soak in some of nature’s finest artistry. The vibrant red-striped hills and distant geological features create a picturesque backdrop that captivates visitors.
One of the better pulloffs because there's a bunch of trails that go out into the rock formations and you can get awesome closeups and selfies that aren't possible at the other stops.
Brandon D — Google review
You can walk short trails further out into the badlands for an even better view. Just beware! Don’t get near the edge…the ground can be slippery and the cliffs are fragile and can give way under your feet. It’s the perfect stop-off to look at the different layers in the rocks, including the red-colored fossil soils. The White River Valley Overlook is located on the south side of the road and there is ample parking. There is even parking for RVs and vehicles pulling campers. There are no restrooms or other amenities at this overlook. The overlook is wheelchair accessible. The spectacular views from the White River Valley Overlook make it a worthy stop for travelers of the Badlands Loop Road.

Took my breath away the second we rolled up. DON'T fall in. No matter how much it looks like you can sled down the side of the canyon YOU CAN'T. I'm not speaking from experience you are

All I kept hearing was that I needed to see the Badlands. Badlands?? Well, google maps took us to the middle of the loop and we by passed the lines into the park. It was breathtaking to see.

Door Trail

Hiking area
The Door Trailhead is a delightful entry point into the stunning landscapes of Badlands National Park. This short boardwalk path, which spans just 0.75 miles round trip, leads you through a break in the iconic Badlands Wall known as 'the Door.' As you stroll along this easy trail, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views that showcase the park's unique geology and fossil history.
Best trail in the park by far! The first portion is fully accessible boardwalk to an overlook, and then the trail opens up for free roaming among the rocks. There's twelve yellow poles to help with navigation and the paths can be as difficult or easy as you want. Definitely worth at least an hour to amble around. Bring a hiking stick to make climbing easier.

The Door Trail is a fantastic walking/ hiking opportunity in the Badlands. The first portion of the trail is an accessible boardwalk that takes the visitor away from the parking lot and behind one of the hills. The extended hike beyond the boardwalk allows the visitor to walk out on the Badlands. We thought the trail was easy, but it does require a lot of stepping up and down and traversing uneven terrain. Take water as it will take about an hour for the out and back, and there is no shade. Follow the trail markers (thin metal posts) to stay on the designated trail. The trail ends at a great viewpoint.

The Door Trail is a perfect short hike in Badlands! It starts on a flat boardwalk, then leads through a natural break in the rock wall into a surreal landscape of canyons and spires. You can follow yellow markers across rocky terrain for incredible views. It’s easy but feels adventurous, like stepping onto another planet. Great for all ages and perfect for photos, stretching your legs, or just soaking in the beauty. A must-stop if you're driving the Badlands Loop!

Easy walk on boardwalk to overlook the beautiful badlands. You can venture off and explore the area, it can be muddy and slippery in spots, but so worth it. Good for all ages.
Jess J — Google review
I really enjoyed this "Choose your own adventure" type trail. There are markers along the trail but it's up to you to decide how to get to them for the most part. A lot of people just kind of wondered around. It was really pretty and pretty easy. Just watch your step and make sure you have a good footing.

It a great short trail...getting off of the board walk I think they say 0.5 miles. Not good for wheelchairs but for anyone who can do few strps up and down over step like looking sedimentary rocks. Enjoy.
Michael P — Google review
Easy and mostly flat trail. You can make it harder if you want to climb some of the cliff like formations, which I highly recommend you do. The kids loved it.
Andrew B — Google review
If you are in a hurry, this is the one trail you should walk - and all the way to the end! It’s only a half mile, but it gives a great impression of the badlands. Park all the way on the north end of the lot for this trail.

Bar & grill
Nestled in the breathtaking scenery of South Dakota's Black Hills and Badlands, Badlands Saloon & Grille is a charming neighborhood tavern that captures the essence of American dining. Just a short drive from Badlands National Park, this beloved eatery offers an inviting atmosphere where visitors can enjoy classic pub fare like burgers, pizza, and sandwiches.
Well this is about the best place in Wall if not the whole area. They are a bit short on staff, but they don’t stress over it and do the best they can. Food is fantastic, staff is very friendly and accommodating. We pulled in and at 7:30 it was packed. So we just had breakfast at the bar. We did receive mild harassment from the bartender, we could have used a little more. But she was busy. Always our first choice in Wall.

This was by far my favorite place to eat at while in Wall, SD. Reasonably priced and delicious food you won’t be disappointed. You’ll love their fries they almost taste like a truffle fry. My burger was medium exactly like the menu stated and everyone loved their food. No one had a single complaint about the food. They are incredibly busy but we didn’t have to wait for a table. Our server didn’t really seem like she was excited to help us, she wasn’t very bubbly or talkative. Otherwise we had an amazing time and I would definitely eat here again. They even have a lot machines in the back.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Badlands Grill was an unexpected gem! I had the Ultimate Mac Sandwich—absolutely loved it. Super unique and packed with flavor. My son-in-law ordered the Dirty Bird and said it was one of the best things he’s had on our trip. The beans were surprisingly amazing—definitely not an afterthought. My son went with the cheeseburger, which he said was pretty standard, but he really enjoyed the flatbread fries. Great food and great stop overall!

The Badlands Saloon and Grille is a gem in Wall! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels inviting—laid-back, rustic, and full of local charm. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a long day of exploring the Badlands or Wall Drug. The service here is outstanding. Staff are friendly, attentive, and genuinely make you feel welcome. They go out of their way to check in, keep things moving smoothly, and add a personal touch to the experience. The environment itself strikes a nice balance between lively and comfortable—whether you’re sitting at the bar for a casual drink or enjoying a sit-down meal with family and friends. The place is clean, well-kept, and has just the right amount of buzz without ever feeling crowded. Overall, Badlands Saloon and Grille delivers both great service and a warm, enjoyable atmosphere—definitely a spot I’d recommend to anyone visiting Wall.

Great Service great food. I don’t get the low reviews. This is 5 stars every day of the week. I had the blue cheese burger. Delicious and the seasoned fries amazing. Definitely freshly cut. And the beef was locally grown. I tasted the difference. We’ll be back. Pizza was good too.

Such a great place for drinks and food!! Marilouise, the bartender, was so sweet. She even had us taste testing their Rattlesnake mojito, which had blueberries mulled, with jalapenos and raspberry puree. it was so smooth and amazing!! The place is clean, fresh, yet warm with the wood. Alkina, our waiter, was so kind, detailed, and helpful. Highly recommend the Rattlesnake Burrito or Rattlesnake omelette. it has the zip yet the sweet balance with a lot of bacon and a raspberry puree. the diced potatoes are so buttery and amazing! I also had the bloody mary. I told Marilouise that I like them spicy. She used Tito's vodka and added a habanero vodka as well with my beer chaser (yes, I'm a Minnesotan and we have to have a chaser with our bloodies). It was perfect!! Do not miss this awesome bar and grill. Skip the Wall Drug tourist trap grill and head across the street to this bar. You won't regret it.

After being on the road all day and into the night. We stopped to get some food. This place is a definite must stop!! Beautiful outside and in!
Jenay V — Google review
The service was great and it was very fast when I went in the evening by myself. The food tasted all right, only one choice of soup, my steak was definitely medium when I ordered medium rare, and you only get one side so no veggies with your meal unless you don't want potatoes. The atmosphere was okay but it's definitely tailored to larger groups which is not bad just not for me.

Dairy Queen Grill & Chill is a beloved fast-food destination that serves up classic favorites like soft-serve ice cream and signature shakes, alongside delicious burgers and fries. Nestled near attractions such as the White River Visitor Center, it’s a convenient stop for travelers seeking a sweet treat or hearty meal. While some may not typically choose Dairy Queen for their ice cream cravings, many find themselves pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and friendly service here.
We stopped by the drive thru one evening while staying in Wall. Service was fast, the guy at the window was friendly, food was prepared exactly as ordered and it was good. What more can you ask for? In fact, this was the best DQ we have eaten at in several years.

Gross dirty got stabbed by the nails sticking out next to the seats none of the windows have an actual window seal There was layers of dust everywhere and the soda machine was old and dirty. There was also wires sticking out of the wall to be honest Ive never seen a dairy queen so horrific this one should be shut down till they make it safe for people to be in

First let me say that after a long day of driving and minimal options in the area, this place delivered solid food. It was ready on time, hot, and order was completed correctly. Now just let me say that the service itself was minimal at best. Staff was not what I would call friendly however as a visitor to someone else’s locality, it’s not a big deal as we were grateful for the promptness of our order.
Stephanie A — Google review
Was really looking forward to a good blizzard from DQ and ended up relieving the worst blizzard I’ve ever had. Came with melted ice cream spilling out the top, hardly any heath and all it tasted like was chocolate syrup. The fact that these are 6$ is unbelievable. Completely disappointed

Follow up from the older reviews much has changed for this season. Being that money is tight and keeping prices as low as possible, I'm sure the owner is doing the best as possible. It is very aged for sure. However, if you want the classics DQ food, this is it. Friendly staff and short wait time.

The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is the main hub for visitors to Badlands National Park, providing essential services and information year-round. Located about eight miles from the Northeast Entrance, it offers maps, exhibits, a theater, and a bookstore. While free public Wi-Fi is available here, cellular service may be unreliable in other parts of the park. Nearby Cedar Pass Lodge serves as the park's only commercial center with dining options and a gift shop.
The visitor center here was like a mini museum. There was so much to see in such a little building. In one room, they have a ton of fossils of mammals that were found at the Badlands, with many of them being extinct. There is a large section of pictures of people who are credited with finding fossils at the park. The mini museum part shows the wildlife at the park, as well as gives you a bit of info about the Natives who lived there.
Adam P — Google review
Lots of information about the formation of the Badlands and the current and past animals and plants that live in this region. Book store has a wide range of book s and literature of the native people and the tribes from this region. Fossil labe is open to 4. The Badlands are surrounded by the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. Learn about the importance of conservation of our public lands. Bison, prairie dogs and big horn sheep was seen throughout the park.
Michelle T — Google review
The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is an almost required stop while driving through the Badlands. It is located on the southern part of the scenic loop. This is one of the only locations where there is water, flush toilets, and air conditioning! The visitor center was very busy the entire time we were there. The Rangers at the information desk seemed to be doing a great job answering questions and providing driving info. Thete is a good introductory film, a small exhibit area, and a gift shop. There were also a number of partially shaded picnic tables outside for those looking for somewhere to eat lunch. I downgraded the visitor center slightly to a 4-star as there was a surprisingly lack of safety information for visitors regarding the desert like environment, lack of shade, and heat warnings. We saw a number of people on trails without hats or water. The air temperature while we were at the Badlands was in the low 80s, but with the absence of shade on the trails, there was a real susceptibility to heat stroke.
Dawn J — Google review
Solid visitor center and if you can make the ranger talk 10/10, complete with telescopes on the moon and informational slide show. Always a must while traveling our nations parks. Camping was fun in the sever storm, not for everyone so be safe if spending the night and keep an eye on the radar. Have fun!
Matthew A — Google review
This visitor center had some well done exhibits and good information. I wished they had a park video, but we didn't see one. The shop was very overcrowded, but did have some nice merch. We loved the Badlands!
Casey M — Google review
Great visitor center with a bunch of interactive exhibits that help teach everyone about the park for background information as you drive around. Small gifts store, but a great selection and really nice and helpful staff that answered all our questions and provided maps of the park.
Brandon D — Google review
Visitor center with exhibits, paleontologist working on fossils but it’s 5 miles into the park I wish it were closer to the entrance since you’ll miss out on notch, door, and window trails if you go straight to the visitor center from the east entrance. They were also out of maps (albeit it was a Sunday weekend).
Kevin W — Google review
Among the usual excellent Badlands visitor center features, this one also has an active working fossil lab. Part time fossil researchers work here seasonally here to sift through thousands growing specimens as visitors often turn into fossil hunters (we found one of my sons elementary school teachers picture on the amateur fossil hunter honor roll!!!!) It is a shame these researchers can't work here full time as funding is lacking and even more so this year (2025) as the executive branch is DOGEing left and right. We bought a ton of souvenirs to support NPS and hoping more awareness will allow higher visibility for some very interesting study.

Hiking Trails
The Cliff Shelf Trailhead offers a unique 0.5-mile loop trail that winds through a juniper forest along the Badlands Wall, featuring boardwalks and staircases. After rainfall, small ponds attract wildlife like white-tailed deer and bighorn sheep. The trail provides stunning views of the Badlands and the White River Valley. Additionally, hikers can explore nearby trails such as the Door Trail, known for its geological features, and the Fossil Exhibit Trail showcasing ancient fossils.
Lovely early morning walk on a hot summer day. Wear proper footwear always, be mindful of rattlesnakes and enjoy the smell of cedar for about 15 minutes on this up and around trail. I saw a rabbit, a deer, birds and beautiful scenery. Inclines, stairs, rough surfaces make this a moderate trail. Not wheelchair friendly to do the loop.
Melissa M — Google review
A spectacular trail offering breathtaking views of the Badlands over a vast horizon from the comfort of wide white gravel paths and a beautiful boardwalk. Careful on the boardwalk though, the wood is very smooth and sometimes coated in a thin layer of silt that can be slippery. Several benches along the trail at wonderful viewpoints for a delightful sit! Partly accessible, but the full trail requires ascending stairs. Highly recommend if you're passing through!
Robin C — Google review
This trail was decent. It was easy to hike and had a path and stairs in many spots. I found it less exciting than other trails (notch, door, saddle pass) and that is why I gave it 4 stars. It is well maintained but the views aren't as grand as the other hikes
Shannon D — Google review
It’s a fairly short walk. Easy for a hiker and fine for others if you don’t mind some stairs. This is a loop. It does have about 75 steps on the right hand side of the loop and about 25 on the left path. The other portions are dirt or boardwalk. It definitely didn’t take 30 mins but maybe we miss some part of it. It took us no more than 15. I show views of this trail from The Notch Trail so you can see it looking down on it.
Terri G — Google review
Lovely trail with some breathtaking views as you climb the stairs. it’s a very small loop, about .6 miles. pretty easy and can be done by almost everyone.

The Cliff Shelf Trail is a short trail that can be done as an out and back on the 7 as a loop trail that returns via a dirt path through some shade trees. There is a pretty steep climb up a section of stairs to the top observation point.

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

4.7
(438)
Historical place
The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site offers a fascinating look into the Cold War history of America. Located near the northeast entrance to Badlands, this historic site features decommissioned missile silos that were once part of a network of 1,000 hidden underground nuclear missiles in the Great Plains. Visitors can tour one of these sites and explore exhibits and artifacts from the 1960s at the visitor center. The center also screens an overview movie every 20 minutes.
Great information and movie about missiles and cold war. Closed on Mondays so beautiful sure to check before you go. Worth the drive especially if you're already in the area.
Anne P — Google review
Informative, we learned quite a lot while there. It has very interesting history of the arms race between the US and the USSR. It would've been better to have the visitor center at the Delta 09 site instead of 15 miles away. It feels like they just put it in a random site, because it's also not at the Delta 01 nor the control center. Only 24 people per day can get to Delta 01, and they are booked 3 months out. Reservations are required for that. The summer hours are much too short. It's 9-4 for the visitor center, and 9-3 for the Delta 09. And you need about an hour just to go through the visitor center to read some of the history, if not more.
Sadie K — Google review
As a veteran and a history fan, this stop was well worth it. The history of the missile arsenal is fascinating, and seeing first hand some of the things we did in the cold war was amazing. Would definitely recommend going to the Delta-09 silo site as well.
Cory E — Google review
Lots of interesting Cold War info. Know that there are 3 separate sites along I90. The visitor center and Delta 9 missile site can be visited by all. If you want to go to the 2rd site and tour the missile launch facility you need to get tickets well in advance
Keith Y — Google review
Very interesting and informative. Tour the museum and don't miss the video that runs about 20 minutes.
Lynn W — Google review
Well done family-friendly exhibits about the Cold War and the missile program in this area. Clean bathrooms, good place to stop if youre passing through. The visitor center is free. The missile command centers are down the road a bit and need tickets and a reservation.
Catherine S — Google review
Cool place to go for some history of the Cold War. Don't miss the exit for the actual site for the missile silo.

Minuteman Missile National Monument site is an incredibly educational site for historical and current day strategic security challenges. While most US National Historic sites capture tactical level and operational level history through preservation of battlefields, the Minuteman sites comprehensively and succinctly summarize strategic concepts and history such as mutually assured destruction and the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. Hauntingly relevant, this and surrounding sites are a must stop for the military historian and American patriot alike.

Historical place
Prairie Homestead is a historic site that offers visitors a glimpse into the life of early settlers on the prairie. The main attraction is a well-preserved sod home built in 1909, along with other buildings and farming equipment. Guests can even dress in pioneer attire as they explore the property. The area is also known for its abundant wildlife, including bison, prairie dogs, and wild turkeys.
I had an amazing visit to the Prairie Homestead. The place feels like a genuine step back in time, with an authentic sod home that’s over a century old. The original artifacts—like the furniture, personal items, and even the old wood-burning stove—make it feel like the original owners just stepped out for a moment. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and the admission was really affordable. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit!
David M — Google review
Fun place to visit. It was a little pricey, but they did give us a discount for seniors. You can see white prairie dogs here, which is the only place you can see them. The museum is interesting, as there is a sod house and some other buildings used during the early prairie times. The staff were friendly and provided some additional information. There’s a place where you can put on some Prairie clothing to take pictures while you visit.
Lucinda W — Google review
Very informative and interesting how people lived in a sod house. They have the cutest white prarie dogs. The people who work there are super nice, and have lots of knowledge about the family that moved there. Plenty of parking, and it's $6 a person.
Sadie K — Google review
Visited here on 6/21/25 Came here after doing Badlands Helicopter Tour and Badlands Ranch Store earlier in the morning. Visitor Center has a fairly nice selection of clothing and other items for reasonable prices. As part of tour, you are able to watch a quick video in a small room inside the building. Once outside, you can see the sod home which offered a unique experience. Don’t forget to press the button by the home to hear more history while you’re exploring! Outside you can also see a “root cellar” that was used for food storage. The outhouse is very funny, you’ll see when you open the door. Worthy stop for 20-30 minutes.
Christopher L — Google review
Love that they've preserved this. I could happily rest in the soddy all summer, shaded and cool. Wondered if the original well pump still works and why they say it's not potable.
J K — Google review
$6 entrance fee, extremely nice couple work there, cute gift shop, and of course the attraction itself. Fun little place outside Badlands!
Chase D — Google review
Fantastic!!! Recommend to stop by. Very interesting to see how much progress we have done in 116 years and how hard were the conditions of people to come to the USA for settlement.
Miroslava S — Google review
We've toured various homesteds in other locations, but I like this one the best. There was an audio recording in the house that described everyday life and many things were still set up like what it would have been like when people lived there. Others we've gone to have just been empty buildings with pictures. This one made it feel more real. And the white prairie dogs were a nice bonus!

Nestled in Badlands National Park, Cedar Pass Lodge offers cozy cabins with picturesque views of the rugged landscape. Originally established in the late 1920s, it has evolved into an eco-friendly accommodation option that provides a home away from home for park visitors. The lodge's restaurant serves up South Dakota favorites, including Indian Frybread Tacos and bison burgers, all while offering stunning vistas of the Badlands.
The cabins at Cedar Pass Lodge are excellent! Apparently they were renovated in 2013, clearly with an eye towards quality. Loved the wooden furniture, super comfy bed (this was much appreciated), and design/layout that maximized the small space. The unit had a mini fridge and chairs on the front porch. You can't beat the location of being in the park right next to the visitor's center. Especially if you have limited time in the park like we did, this spot will help you feel like you're truly immersed. The gift shop where you check in sells local beer and wine, FYI. A good selection actually! We were glad for the adjacent restaurant. Breakfast was better than dinner there (legitimately pretty good breakfast burrito), but nice to have it there.

Our stay at Cedar Pass Lodge was wonderful. Our cabin was clean and very cozy. We had wildlife come right up next to our porch. The staff was helpful and our food was great, too! Badlands National Park is one of our favorite places to visit!! I wish we could have stayed longer
Michele W — Google review
We only had lunch twice at the lodge so this review is just for the restaurant. They have a menu posted at the entrance and you place your order at the register and pay first. They offer fountain drinks with refills. The menu is limited as it's almost end of season. The pricing is similar to other restaurants. They offer also breakfast items and I liked the yogurt parfait but found $8 for one a little high.
Emmi P — Google review
We had cabin/room 101 and our back deck looked out on the Badlands. Picnic table and two heavy Adirondack chairs. Great for morning coffee or afternoon drinks. Excellent views. Lots of birds flying through the prairie grasses. Peaceful. Room was nice. You bring in a lot of sand. It would be nice to have had a broom. Water was smelly and we did not drink. But views trumped it all.
Amy H — Google review
There are not many places to stay (besides camping) directly IN the Badlands park. There also is not many places to eat that are close (besides the restaurant at Lodge which wasn’t what we were looking for). But the experience of staying here made up for all of that. These cabins were really nice, clean and had beautiful views of the Badlands. There is a nice spot out back to do alittle climbing, exploring. Felt very safe here.
Shellbert — Google review
If you are visiting the Badlands, there is no better place to stay. Food and amenities are limited as you are in the national park, but the restaurant is adequate and all rooms come with a microwave and mini fridge. The best part of this stay is being in the heart of it all - do not miss the nightly ranger program. Staying at the cabins makes for a magical visit.

Cedar Pass Gift Shop at the Cabin is such a lovely place to stop! They have a huge variety of gifts, souvenirs, and unique items all about Badlands National Park. Everything is well organized, clean, and beautifully displayed. The staff were friendly and helpful, making the visit even more enjoyable. A perfect place to pick up something special to remember your Badlands trip!
Nan K — Google review
This place a few years back used to be a hidden gem. Good service, good food. I’m not sure what happened, but everything went downhill by like 2 levels. The Indian Taco is substantially smaller with less toppings and just lower quality overall. Previously this dish was so good I saved the recipe card and made them at home. They don’t seem to be using the same recipe. They also got rid of wait staff, which gives it the feel of an airport kiosk or something. Won’t be stopping here again unless I hear things are overhauled

Bigfoot Pass Overlook is a remarkable viewpoint that offers a stunning perspective of one of the major passes in Badlands National Park. This overlook holds great historical significance as it was part of the ancient Bigfoot Pass trail, used by Native Americans to traverse the Badlands from northern prairies to southern ones. In December 1980, Chief Big Foot led his people through this pass while evading the Cavalry, adding to its historical importance.
We have picnic here, it feels great to picnic and view the barren landscape at the same time. Just remember take your garbage with you in order to protect this environment.

I've been noticing many improvements throughout Bedlands Park. Visiting places like this has been one of the best decisions of my life. This particular overlook is a gem — it has restrooms, a few longer parking spots suitable for RVs, and two boardwalks on opposite sides of the overlook. There are also picnic tables with roofs for shade. It’s a great spot to take a break during your travels.

Beautiful view, absolutely recommend if you are interested in seeing the badlands. Watch out for rattlesnakes!

The first view of the Badlands is shocking, like an alien landscape. This overlook is fantastic to provide that view.

We talked to a paleontologist who works here, and she encouraged us to go off the path to help the park find fossils. Going off the path led to some great views. Try not to wander too far though and be mindful of wildlife!

Burns Basin Overlook

Scenic spot
Burns Basin Overlook offers stunning views of the Badlands, with rolling grassy hills and rocky outcrops showcasing a variety of geological formations including sandstones, siltstones, mudstones, claystones, limestones, volcanic ash, and shale. Named after Wilson Burns' old homestead in the basin below from the early 20th century, this overlook provides a glimpse into different moments in geologic time.
Highly recommend going to Badlands at sunrise. I was hoping to get there by sunset the night before, but sunrise was just as epic. Absolutely breathtaking. Started at Pinnacle overlook at dawn and hung there as the sun came up, then made my way through the rest of the park getting to see beautiful animals roaming throughout.

Badland Basin is a breathtaking natural wonder that leaves visitors in awe. The stunning landscape offers panoramic views of colorful rock formations, towering mesas, and deep canyons. The serenity of the desert setting is broken only by the occasional call of a bird or rustling of the wind through the brush. Hike through the basin and discover wildlife like jackrabbits, coyotes, and roadrunners. The rust-colored backdrop, adorned by the golden sunsets and brilliant starry nights, makes for a stunning photo opportunity. Badland Basin is a must-visit for anyone seeking to experience the beauty of the American Southwest.

Pictures cannot do the Badlands justice! Make sure you find the actual Scenic loop to have this experience. There are signs everywhere identifying the Badlands National Park, but unless you find the actual gate to the park entrance, it is easy to get lost with poor road conditions & no gas stations!

This is one of the many viewing spots in Badlands national park. The entire area is full of beautiful views with different formations. You may need a whole day to experience this area. Carry water, fill gas tanks and enjoy the nature.

Very cool spot that’s worth a stop if you’re passing by the badlands. However it’s not a destination. Not what I seek out for adventure. Cool…but not majestic.

Along with White River, one of my favorite viewpoints in the whole park. The colors of these mounds and their seemingly endless branching outwards and downwards into smaller mounds was an amazing sight. Absolutely worth stopping at along the scenic road, and I'd say worth going out of your way to see if for some reason you decided not to drive the scenic road (which would be a mistake)

The Conata Basin Overlook is a stunning vantage point that offers an expansive view of the breathtaking landscape below. This overlook showcases the rugged beauty and wild charm of the Badlands, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. As you stand on the short boardwalk, you're treated to a panoramic vista of ancient rock layers known as paleosols, which are characterized by their vibrant colors and unique formations.
Breathtakingly beautiful. So serene as you can look out over the basin and the yellow mounds. It's a little higher than the yellow mound overlook, so you get the full view from this point. There is a crisp breeze here as you are higher up, but the views are just gorgeous. No words can truly describe the beauty in this natural view. Loved it here so much!

This is a overlook at Badlands National park. I stopped here to watch the Northern lights. This is great spot for them. Dark skies and little light pollution. Also a great place for star gazing.

Take the time and get out and hike some of the many hikes! We saw 3 big horn bucks just hanging out. People were walking by them and they had no clue they were even there.
Laurie H — Google review
Visiting the Badlands National Park is a must! Just be sure you find the actual gates to the park entrance that lead you to the Scenic Loop as the area is huge with Badlands National Park signs everywhere, but if you end up south of the Scenic Loop, roads can be bad with many potholes and no gas stations! You might even come across a ghost town or two, but make sure you have a full tank of gas and your car has a solid suspension! At dusk also be ware of all the prairie dogs scurrying across the road like they own the place!
Eileen B — Google review
Also a great stop to see the yellow mounds from above, some of the oldest formations in the park. Plenty of parking when we came early and not that crowded.
Brandon D — Google review
Absolutely breath taking views. Come to the park early. Watch as the night sky paints the badlands with majestic and almost trippy views. Colors come to life and so does the wildlife. See the goats pop out and guide your way to a mesmerizing sunrise.

Nestled conveniently near Badlands National Park, the Super 8 by Wyndham Wall serves as an ideal budget-friendly retreat for travelers seeking comfort after a day of exploration. This well-maintained hotel offers complimentary continental breakfast and coffee to kickstart your mornings, along with free Wi-Fi to keep you connected during your stay. Guests appreciate the ample parking available for larger vehicles, making it easy to access local attractions just off I-90.
I needed a place to spend the night as I had just drove over 13 hours & I’ll be honest - I wasn’t too sure about staying at a Super 8. I was completely SOLD by the girl working the front desk. I wish I remembered her name but she was from out of state and typically worked from home doing bookings (I believe from Louisiana?) there to help for the summer months - anyhow, she was top notch customer service. She was SO kind, so helpful in letting me know I can walk and check out the cute, little town. Assured me it’s so safe - honestly she is what made the stay excellent. Please pass this review along to her.

Stated one might. Convenient location near I-90 and just a short walk from downtown Wall and Walk Drugs. Folks at the hotel were wonderful and helpful. Room was clean and the bed very comfortable. Breakfast was good. Chibani yogurt, granola and other cereals, fresh berries, hot pancakes and waffles. No hot eggs, bacon or sausage but that wasn’t a problem for us.
Michael D — Google review
The ladies at the front desk were very friendly, and they even offered free cookies and popcorn. Check-in was quick and easy. The room was decent, but the mattress was old and overly bouncy, which gave me a backache. Breakfast options were quite limited — no bread, just waffles.
Roshini G — Google review
Excellent! We would definitely stay here again. Clean, updated lobby and rooms. No odors in rooms! Absolutely wonderful and filling breakfast, both hot and cold. Best water pressure in shower that I’ve ever had. Height of the showerhead was a little low for my husband but great for me.
Ann J — Google review
The whole hotel was a dump. Carpets are stained and dirty. The walls in the room were so marked up with dirt I didn’t know what color the paint was. The bathroom is very small, and the door barely shuts. Positive note breakfast had a lot of choices.

This was a great stay! Everything was clean, the people are kind and helpful, and it was right off the highway in a space that has few other accommodations. Driving through the Badlands National Park was a breeze because it was so close. Highly recommend this hotel for any stay needs.
Brittany G — Google review
Great location, friendly staff and clean, comfortable rooms. I had only 2 small issues. The light in the bathroom activated a heat lamp and fan that were VERY noisy and there was no way to shut it off without leaving the bathroom. The 2nd was the breakfast. They had wonderful berries and yogurt but the only bread type items were waffles or pancakes. There was no just plain bread or bagels. I don't want a sweet breakfast everyday. Those were minor things and overall the stay was great.
Rae B — Google review
We had been driving with two kids (5y and 2y) for two days. We got to the hotel around 9:30 PM and were exhausted and ready to sleep. We grabbed our kids and stuff and walked to the door of the hotel, which was locked. We pressed the button next to the door and nothing happens. A lady is sitting at the front desk, talking and laughing on the phone. We were being eaten up by mosquitos, which my daughter has an allergy to, so she currently has welts on her arms and neck, as we were not let in after standing there staring at this lady for 10 minutes. Finally we put the kids back in the car and pull around to the front. My husband calls the desk. She doesn't answer, but calls back and says "oh I saw you guys standing there but I didn't realize the door was locked, sorry." My husband goes in to check in and before we even drive away she RE-LOCKS THE DOOR!!! So there's no way she didn't know the door was locked and she admitted she saw us standing out there with our two little kids, one of which was screaming and crying wanting to go to bed. Oh, and the back door was completely unlocked we found out, so basically the lady at the front desk just didn't want to work. I was stunned. The rooms were completely outdated and the hallways smell awful. Do not recommend at all! The Best Western across the street looked much nicer and wasn't a huge price difference, we regret not staying there instead. Nice location being only 15 minutes from Badlands National Park, but there are plenty of other places to stay at. Steer clear!!! Update: We ended up needing to take my daughter to urgent care because of the mosquito bites and she needed 3 days of steroids. The hotel responded to my review but made no effort to contact us.

Restaurant
Salty Steer, located at 600 Main St, Wall, SD 57790, is a new and inviting restaurant that has quickly become a popular dining spot in the area. The menu features a variety of steaks and burgers served in a lively atmosphere, complemented by an extensive selection of craft beers and delectable desserts. Guests have praised the perfectly cooked steaks and great beer selection, making it a standout gastropub.
We were visiting Wall for souvenirs, sightseeing, and to see Wall Drug one last time before we headed back home. We decided to have dinner in Wall for our last meal. We googled all the options and Salty Steer was at the top of the list. We perused the menu and we were in agreement that it sounded like a good place to eat. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. She ordered the buffalo rib eye that came with a wedge salad and other sides and I ordered a bunch of appetizers including the deviled eggs, and the bruschetta. Everything was yummy. She didn't want her salad so I nibbled on it. I must say it was one of the better wedge salads I've had. The hostess sat us right away and our waiter was friendly and attentive. We asked a lot of questions and he was very accommodating. He also made some great recommendations and made our visit very pleasant. The place is modern looking and has lots of options so I'm sure whoever is in your group will find something they would like to eat.
Aleta D — Google review
Was pleasantly surprised based on 4.3 rating. We started with the French onion soup, which was very good and I don't say this often. The buffalo burger was cocked to medium rare as ordered and I liked it wasn't dripping with sauces. The buns could be a little bit fancier. The steak potatoes could be crunchier. The heifer salad was also very good, if you like fruit based salat.
Marko — Google review
We went there as my friend wanted to celebrate her birthday while traveling together. I liked the furniture and setup of the dining room. The table the waitress moved us to was OK but there was food and dirt under the table. We were told that the soda fountain works only for lemonade or ice tea. We could purchase cans of soda for $3.99 each, basically the same amount as the charge for one fountain drink where refills would have been free. I wish they had offered a lower price while the fountain was out. The waitress was courteous but not interested in our group at all. Probably most people just come here once while traveling through so why show interest. The food on the other hand was really good and well presented. They accepted Apple Pay. When you go to the restroom expect to hear loud music through some speakers.
Emmi P — Google review
The Heifer Salad was super refreshing — packed with fresh berries, spring mix, feta, crunchy nuts, and a delicious dressing. The mac and cheese was absolutely bomb! The Spicy as Cluck grilled chicken sandwich was amazing — the bread was soft and fresh, and the whole sandwich felt light compared to most chicken sandwiches. The steak fries were crispy and fresh too. Totally loved the vibe of this place, and our waitress was friendly!
Roshini G — Google review
Could have been a great experience - the interior is inviting and comfortable, the food is great and offers many options. However, it becomes quickly clear that they don’t care about anyone ever coming back. When we dined there, the soda fountain was out of order, and the alternative was cans - but they said they’re going to charge for each can the full soda fountain price (3.99) over and over. Guys, it’s *your* soda fountain that broke, you could at least allow two or three cans per charge, or offer the cans for 2$. That ruined it for us (but who cares, we come never back anyway, right?). The ‘medium’ burger was well-done - why do you even ask how we want it?? The rest of the service was also wham-bam-thank-you-mam style, smiles cost extra, and are you done yet, bye!! Could gave been so nice…
Will P — Google review
We are traveling with friends and came here at the end of the day for dinner. I ordered a prime sirloin medium with seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were good. The vegetables were very cold. The steak was cold, extremely thick, cooked rare and chewy. My son got the Mac and cheese, I liked it but he did not he said 2/5 he's 12. My husband said his cut of steak, NY strip was bad but cooked correctly. The French onion soup needed salt but it was really good otherwise. The wedge salads were excellent. The drinking glasses were dirty. The restaurant it's self is nice inside and clean. I was over all somewhat disappointed. Everyone else in our group got sandwiches or burgers and said those were excellent.

Food was not very good. The menu was small with either pizza or fried foods (French fries, fried cheese, fried onion rings for sides and then chicken tenders, crispy chicken sandwich, chicken nuggets, burger). All entrees came with chips which was just a bag of lays potato chips. The entrees were cheap but small portions. Burgers looks thin and chicken tenders were extremely undercooked. I bit into a chewy chicken tender and realized it was raw chicken inside the breading (see pic). Bar had a good atmosphere with decor but service was pretty slow.y group was there 2 hours and it is not a big place, definitely not so busy that taking our order and getting food should have taken that long.

We stumbled upon this great little place while exploring the South area of Badlands National Park. We were immediately greeted and directed to sit wherever we wanted to. Our Server was very friendly and food came out quickly. We ordered a burger with onion petals and steak on a bun with a side of potato chips. Burger was good, steak was flavourful, a little chewy but good flavour and size. Prices were reasonable, relaxed, casual place with pool table and some machine games. Lots of $1.00 bills around signed by guests, which was interesting to read. Wifi for guests may have been helpful as we needed to check our location proximity to next destination. We also stopped by the general store down the same road to inquire about renting a side by side vehicle. We only had time for an hour, so we didn't rent one as the lowest price offered was for longer than that and I didn't want to spend $180US for an hour. Good deal for longer, it just didn't work for us. Same owner runs restaurant and store, I wish you all the luck, you've got great businesses, in a great area!!!

We were there three times during our stay to explore the Badlands. There were only three options to dine in nearby our hotel. This one was the best. Considering the options in the area, this is a great place for dinner (and lunch). The burgers are good and large, and seem to be homemade; the pizza looks nearly too perfect for homemade but if it is from a supermarket, it’s the best freezer pizza I ever had! It’s not cheap but worth it.

Just a little bar in a little town. It is basically Right when you pop out or go into the Badlands. It was nice for a stop for some food and a beer for our group. It's just a small place and the locals working there are very nice. The beer selection is okay for where they are and the other people in the bar are usually just travelers for the most part, we ended up talking to a few people there and it was just nice and quiet and almost full at one point but still a pretty quiet joint. A nice little stop.

Located in Wall, the National Grasslands Visitor Center is the only one of its kind in the country. It offers a wealth of information about the National Grasslands across the Great Plains through more than 20 exhibits. The center focuses on showcasing the history, recreational opportunities, management, and significance of preserving the prairies and their dependent wildlife. Additionally, it features a junior ranger program for kids to engage with and learn from.
Very small, but very cool visitor center for all the National Grasslands. Make sure you watch the film about efforts to protect the Black Footed Ferret. It is highly endangered. Staff is nice, and they have a little gift shop worth looking over.

I was looking forward to visit National Grasslands in 2024 but is was closed due remodeling. I am happy to be able to visit in 2025. The interior is just amazing so is the stuff, very friendly. I have watched the documentary about saving the black-footed ferret from nearly extinction.

This place was a last minute decision to stop at and boy were we happy that we did!! The gal working was so nice and friendly. She started the video for us, engaged in conversation with my children. Spoke to them in detail about the black footed ferret (which we adopted one). She gave the kids a junior ranger booklet as well as a smoky the bear bag with items in it to remind them to be responsible with matches and take care of nature. My kids fell in love with black footed ferrets because of this stop. Restrooms were clean as well. The gift shop is small, but had all the right stuff. They even have a grasslands stamp we added to our passport books.

Great informative national park run exhibits. Not a huge place, but a lot more things to look at than you would expect in a grassland. There is also a 25min video, gift shop, and jr. ranger program for the kids.

We did a SD overlanding trip in Sept. 2022 and stopped here for MVU maps to identify dispersed camping spots. There was a very nice ranger on duty when we stopped and was super helpful. I wish I remembered their name. They also had a dry box outside with materials in case they were closed. As frequent travelers and users of paper maps, we wish more states did this!

If you are planning on stopping at Wall Drug then you should also stop here especially if you have kids. They have a junior ranger program and it's super cute. My sister and I visited Badlands H-D on June 20th. The dealership wasn’t busy. We weren’t greeted when we walked in. I went over to the dealer T’s wall where 2 employees were at. I was looking at the shirts. I wasn’t asked if I needed any help or what sizes I was looking for. I made my way through the kids clothes and women’s. I was never offered any help in any section of motorclothes, My sister went directly to women’s, she also wasn’t offered any help and wasn’t able to find larger sizes for women. I work at Zylstra H-D in Ames Iowa. Every person who walks through our doors is greeted, they are asked questions, they are walked to whatever department they came in for. We pride ourselves on every customer having an amazing experience no matter what they come in for. I was more than disappointed by the experience I had at this dealership.

Badlands Wilderness Overlook

4.9
(132)
Vista point
Nestled along the scenic Sage Creek Rim Road, the Badlands Wilderness Overlook is a must-visit gem within Badlands National Park. While not an official hiking trail, the trek between this overlook and Hay Butte Overlook offers breathtaking views of dramatic canyons, rugged buttes, and striking spires that define this unique landscape. The area is rich in wildlife sightings and provides a chance to immerse yourself in nature's beauty.
Great views over a wide area of some of the signature rock formations. Nice parking area and easy walk for viewing
Dave H — Google review
It was so amazing I knew it was gonna be pretty but seeing it in person was breathtaking, we mostly just drove along side it stopping occasionally there were places you could walk down into it for a bit which were very fun. We also saw many buffalo while driving along side it
Lydia Z — Google review
A most amazingly beautiful park. And soooo vast. Wildlife and grazing animals to observe. Really a picturesque place. So glad we went.
Meg G — Google review
Plenty of parking and great views of the rock formations although this whole road is gravel and extremely dusty. There's a lot of bison along the road in this area also
Brandon D — Google review
Beautiful overlook with great sights of surrounding area and wildlife. Dirt road access, a little rough in spots but our mid size sedan did just fine. Definitely worth stopping to check out while exploring Badlands National Park.
Shannon R — Google review
When you think you saw it all, this overlook surprises you! Don’t hesitate, 100 yards, and you are in the middle of the valley. And bisons nearby!
Marta S — Google review
Beautiful view! A must stop and it’s not too far off the main highway. So COOL! You can get a safe distance to see tons of Bison & prairie dogs!

Some absolutely breathtaking views. Got some great photos. If you have a veterans pass admission is free.

Homestead Overlook

Scenic spot
Homestead Overlook offers stunning views of the Badlands and prairie landscapes, providing a glimpse into the history of homesteaders and ranchers who settled in the White River Valley. This overlook is situated on 240, between the Pinnacle Entrance and Big Foot Pass Road, showcasing the area where homesteading in the Badlands took place. Visitors can learn about the Homesteading Act of 1862, which allowed U.S.
The best overlook we stopped at because there was a mountain sheep and a rattlesnake to go along with the outstanding views of the rock formations and valley
Brandon D — Google review
Come early to avoid the crowds and for your best chance at seeing the sheep. I also saw a golden eagle on a telephone wire across the street and around the corner from this pull-out.
Thirteendays — Google review
This is sunrise/sunset point, but we were there at about noon. Still pretty and challenging to know that homesteaders tried making a go of it here, but the beauty is not compatible with farming.
Lester K — Google review
It doesn’t looks like there are homestead, but if have chance, I would really like to move my house to here, then I can see this scenery everyday. Haha
Hanhua G — Google review
Great views. Highly recommend the loop road.

Awesome views. We got to see some big horn sheep here as well.
Alex M — Google review
This was more breathtaking than I could ever have imagined. You just have to see it in person, so add this spot to your "Must Scenes" list!

Cedar Pass Campground

Campground
RV park
Cedar Pass Campground is a paid camping site with 96 total sites, including some for RVs with electric hookups. Reservations can be made through Cedar Pass Lodge online or by phone. Nearby, Sage Creek Campground offers free first-come, first-serve camping with 22 sites. The campground provides clean bathrooms and showers available for a fee.
Beautiful spacious, prairie sites. Gorgeous views from the edge of the badlands. Bathrooms have flush toilets and running water. Showers are $1.00/4 minutes. Short walk to the amphitheater. Everyone enjoyed the nightly ranger programs and star gazing presentations.
John H — Google review
I'll be honest, the scenery is 10/10, the vibes are good, the people were nice, but... The campsites are right on top of one another and for seemingly no reason considering there was a ton of space around the campground. The bathroom was hands down, without a doubt, the worst camp bathroom I've ever encountered. The showers took 4 dollars from me and I could only get one to work partially for a couple minutes. The smell, oh God the smell 🤢 Well anyways, I'll be staying outside the park next time. Badlands are amazing otherwise!
Corey T — Google review
One of our absolute favorites! The scenery is incredible! A few things to note: these are not full hook up sites, only electric. There are pay showers (like $2 for 8 minutes), the showers aren’t the cleanest and do get cold, they also don’t have adequate hooks for hanging clothes. No laundry facilities. But, we keep coming back, as we love the location.
A S — Google review
Can't beat the stay for the price. Even in September there is still a lot of traffic through this campground. Part of the reason for the rating is the coin op showers and the restrooms were not cleaned daily. However, it is amazing to wake up to some of the most beautiful rock formations you will find anywhere. This campground is great for seeing both sunrise and sunset. The camp hosts were amazing and very knowledgeable.
Brian A — Google review
I absolutely loved my stay at Cedar Pass Campground! The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of Badlands National Park, with jaw-dropping views of the rock formations from every campsite. Waking up to a pink and gold sunrise over the buttes was pure magic. The campground itself is clean and well-maintained. The restrooms and showers were spotless, and it was great to have access to potable water and picnic tables at each site. It’s peaceful at night too, just the sound of the wind and the occasional coyote in the distance. The close proximity to Cedar Pass Lodge is a bonus, where you can grab a meal or souvenirs if you need a break from camp cooking. The staff were friendly and super helpful! If you love scenic views, stargazing, and a peaceful camping experience with just the right mix of comfort and wilderness, this place is perfect. I can’t wait to come back!
Vee K — Google review
I have stayed here twice in two years and both times has been a very pleasant experience. You really can't beat the sunset here. You also have a good view no matter where you are though I would recommend the outer loops for better viewing. Even though this campground is not private, it feels private anyway. Even when full it has been very quiet and relaxing. I enjoyed going to the talks at the amphitheater at night and when it's not cloudy, the stars are amazing. The restrooms are clean, pay shower takes quarters and is cold, but it's nice. There is a free dish washing station and they have plenty of recycling and trash bins. Every site has a covered picnic table. I will say, the storms can be wicked here as I got caught in one last year which broke a tent pole and I had to hunker down in my car. But, this is a great campground. It's easy to take a walk around from here too.
Christina E — Google review
You got to love the national parks and their campgrounds. Every campsite has a view of the Badlands. Walking distance to the amphitheater with nightly talks by the rangers in season. Some sites have electric. No campfires due to possible fire hazard to surrounding area. And the showers are pay per minute, but considering the water resource constraints, this is understandable.
Jesse W — Google review
Love the surrounding area! Just beautiful! But the bathrooms are not good. Perpetually wet floors which make them a bit slippery. The commodes and sinks were very clean at least but there was an odor. Showers are coin operated which was a first for me to see. They looked clean but there were no doors for privacy just the shower curtain that divided the shower stall. I passed on the showers here. Wondered if the outlets worked. The outside water fountain was not operable-must have been this way for a while because there was a bird nest in it. The kids did enjoy the open flat area and they played ball there. The songbirds are really amazing here too! Visitors Center is just down the road. The hiking is amazing. We did the notch trail with 5 little ones aged 8 weeks {he was in a carrier} to 8 years and it was fun.

White River Visitor Center

4.7

Temporarily Closed
Visitor center
The White River Visitor Center is a remote location situated 20 miles south of Scenic, offering services for those interested in Pine Ridge and backcountry camping and hiking. The center features exhibits showcasing fossils, Lakota artifacts, and historical events in Lakota history. Open seasonally from roughly Memorial Day to mid-October, it provides park rangers on site, indoor restrooms, water stations, and small park exhibits.
This was my first trip to BNP, on an overcast end of May Friday. At first the colors of the formations were muted. The colors became more vivid as the clouds cleared up and the sun came out. And then it was phenomenal! I've hiked the Might Five in Utah and have high standards. The Badlands are unique, inspiring and have their own beauty. Plus, I saw bison (buffalo) herds right outside my car, nursing mountain sheep, melodic birds galore. And the park is not as crowded as other national parks. I do recommend traveling the entire scenic drive, not skipping the west side. That is where the large herds of buffalo were, and it was far less traveled so we had most spots all to ourselves. There's also a primitive campground in the west with just vault toilets nestled among grassy hills with buffalo grazing nearby. The visitor center is a nice 15 minute stop with great bathrooms, an interesting exhibit and gift shop. Car parking in front, plenty of pull-through, day use RV, trailer, camper parking in back. A must see if you make it to this part of the country.
Cheryl W — Google review
Nice visitor center with lots of history and information. There is not a gift shop. Well maintained bathrooms and a water bottle fill station. Biggest negative is I felt as if we were bothering the ranger, there was no greeting.. no how can I help.. it was 9:30 when we arrived, maybe he wasn’t ready for people 🤷‍♀️
Taylor — Google review
Indigenous workers work here. You can ask lots of questions and learn about what life was like then and now. Get a map and explore , ask the staff what they recommend. If time is a crunch. Have water a compass, food , gas. Enjoy the beautiful desolation! You'll appreciate what you have.
S S — Google review
Great little visitor center to visit if you're entering the Badlands from the South. The rangers have plenty of experience and are very helpful. Although this visitor center is much smaller than the main one, it has plenty of fascinating things to learn particularly about the North American native tribes that lived here. Parking lot is fairly small, but good. Decent bathrooms. No gift shop at this one. Drinking fountain available. 1-2 lunch tables if you plan on doing a picnic at this stop. This visitor center is seasonal! It closes during the winter.
Ryan T — Google review
Not your usual National Park Visitor Center - may or may not be worth the trip, depending on your interests. When we visited, an elderly Native American sat alone inside a small building, and was willing and able to answer questions about the local Native Americans; very little else. No T-shirts or the usual knick-knacks for sale (but restrooms). Pay attention to the hours; they are only open during main season, and not for long hours.
Will P — Google review
Park Ranger Rosales was very informative and friendly! Thanks for all the helpful tips for the south section of the national park! The visitor center is packed full of historical Native American information with many interactive exhibits. In the park, I highly recommend the sheep mountain table hike for the views, Cedar Butte open hiking, and the Red Shirt Table Overlook! Check in with the rangers or park volunteers to find the best access points into the backcountry here. This portion of the park is surrounded by private reservation land, so please be aware and respectful of cross country/free hiking limitations. There is a big difference in experiences from the northern unit and this region of the park. It is truly beautiful within this portion of the park if you have the adventure in you to explore.

Amazing place, the mountain, the rocks everything looks nice but the best is that you get to see a lot of wildlife. We got to see a lot of dunkeys and actually they washer our car hahahhaha.

Located in Wall, South Dakota, Red Rock Restaurant is a popular eatery offering hearty farm-to-table cuisine with a focus on locally sourced beef, pork, and lamb dishes. The laid-back restaurant provides a cozy interior as well as outdoor seating options. It serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, late-night desserts, and drinks using locally raised beef and pork. Despite some mixed reviews about the service quality, visitors praise the tasty menu options at reasonable prices.
Quite possible my favorite place to eat in SD. Veteran owned, awesome food, cowboy atmosphere and great people. I had steak tips, cowboy beans and coleslaw. Coby beans were AWESOME!!! Steak tips were perfectly cooked and slaw was just like mom’s. In the middle of tourist trap paradise is this little gem. Highly recommend.

My husband described the popcorn chicken as "chicken juice bombs". They were amazing. We enjoyed the salad bar a ton. The creamed peas were simple but really refreshing. A great mixup from the regular road trip food. The mac and cheese had a delicious buttery taste, kind of like melt in your mouth. The only "negatives" were that the wait for the food was a little long and that the burger wasn't "smothered" as we would expect. The mushrooms and onions were just topped.
Tacky T — Google review
Stopped by and found they had 4 chicken legs, garlic bread and side as a Special. I really like chicken legs, and find it hard to just have an order of legs, they were nice and crunchy outside and moist inside. As a side I had the Cowboy Beans, and they were really good. Our waiter was very friendly, we were fortunate to hit the place when it wasn't busy. Would definitely return when we're in the area.

My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a Monday. What a refreshing change from the usual road- side fare! A combination of veteran efficiency and service with authenticity of Dakotas hospitality and warmth, serving food that is outta this world. Drew took exceptional care of our needs and was super capable and affable. We had the best soup ( potato and beef) that I think I have ever had - and were offered a free second helping!! Go figure!! My husband had honey garlic chicken wings as well and they were truly epic!! Saw other veterans there and I am convinced that this place will achieve icon status in Wall. Having waited tables in college to get through I recognize exceptional service when I see it. Having eaten pretty mediocre food in our travels I appreciate truly exceptional food preparation when I am lucky enough to find it. I think this place is a hidden gem and would love to return for the dinner menu if I get a chance. We were served quickly within minutes as were others who came after we did - no wait at all! So thank you for the great food, authentic warmth , ample portions, , concerted attention to our needs. And thank you for your service.

I came in to try their authentic Indian taco which was amazing. The owner even checked on the food quality and service.(it was a togo order) Waitstaff was great. They make their own dough, so i will be back to try the pizza!

We stopped in for dinner on the way to Badlands NP. Our server was fantastic and very attentive while still giving us privacy and time to talk. The salad bar was limited, but if you like a basic salad there was nothing wrong with it. I ordered the Hamburger Steak (cooked medium) with a side of mashed potatoes. The steak itself was BOMB and I loved the onions and mushrooms. My mashed potatoes and the brown gravy were very yummy and the perfect consistency. Dinner also came with a roll and melted butter which was also good! Soft, not stale. My boyfriend ordered the broasted chicken dinner and had equally high praises! There weren’t any vegetable side options but dinner did include a salad, which was a good substitute. I highly recommend this roadside restaurant, especially if you are heading into the NP to camp for the night. Their food beats a portable-stove cooked meal for sure. Thanks, Red Rock!
Sydney W — Google review
Amazing fresh local beef 🥩 NY strip was huge and cooked & seasoned perfectly. Peach was my server and she was wonderful. Came with trip to the salad and soup bar, both were delicious after a day of hiking badlands. The outdoor dining was nice as the weather was perfect.
Jeff H — Google review
We stopped here after visiting the Badlands National Park. It was very disappointing. There are two sides to this restaurant and we apparently sat on the bar side which didn't look as nice as the other side based on recent photos. The restrooms and area we sat were not as nice as some of the other reviews noted. If you still choose to go here, ensure that you sit on the good side. There is also outdoor seating. The waitress was friendly. Unfortunately, our definitions of good differ as we do ask the wait staff at new places if they recommend we order what we have selected. The pork was dry and chewy. The chicken tenders were not good to okay depending on which child you asked. The Teriyaki wings were just okay. The wings are fried here, not grilled. If you have had Wisconsin cheese curds, do not order them from here. We got the cheddar cheese curds and they were not good. The onion petals were just okay. Be prepared to dine with flies even indoors. There is something about flies in most of the restaurants that we went to in South Dakota.
