Yamagata in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Yamagata, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Yamagata city makes a good base for exploring northern Japan’s mountains, hot springs, and historic temples. Nearby Yamadera temple offers atmospheric hillside stairways and sweeping valley views, while Zao Onsen is known for its sulfurous hot springs, ski slopes, and winter “snow monster” trees. In town, you’ll find relaxed parks, a small castle site, and museums that introduce the culture of the wider prefecture. The area is also noted for its seasonal food, especially cherries, pears, and hearty soba dishes.
With favorites like Yamagata Marugoto-kan Beni-no-kura, Yamagata prefecture Gokoku shrine, and Yamagata Castle East Gate, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Mitoya and そば処 山形一寸亭 so you can get the best taste of Yamagata while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Rissyakuji Temple, also known as Yamadera or the Mountain Temple, is a centuries-old Buddhist temple located on a mountaintop outside of Yamagata City. The temple was founded in the 9th century and has been visited by famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho. To reach the temple, visitors must climb 1,100 steps along a mountain path that offers panoramic views. The temple is especially beautiful during autumn when the leaves change color.
This is a great spot to stop for a few hours on your way through the area (3 to 4 hours of plenty to visit and grab a bite in the town). Spectacular views from various points on the trek up. I recommend leaving your backpack at a locker as it can be pretty humid in among the trees on the climb and I was glad to have less with me.

This has been one of my most favorite places to visit in Japan so far. It is an absolutely magical place! We went on a drizzly day, so the raindrops and mist added to the mysterious quality of the location. There were so many stairs to climb- but a lot of places to step to the side, take a break, and look at the surrounding beauty. Moss covered statues, beautiful temples, and little shops skirted the path up the mountain. The grounds were in pristine condition and so clean. The view from the top was amazing!! I was under the impression dogs are not normally permitted on temple grounds but we saw (and heard) many dogs during our visit. There are many areas outside of the temple grounds to purchase food and souvenirs. There are also some paid parking lots nearby.
Brandy R — Google review
For foliage /momiji reference, these pictures were taken on October 22nd. Great place to slowly enjoy, but too soon for color change. If this area was in Kyoto it would be so crowded with tourists because of its beauty, but it still gives a untouched kind of place vibe. 2 hours should be enough to take your time going up and appreciate yhe nature, statues and local architecture
Andrea R — Google review
You’ll find plenty of paid parking at the base of Risshaku-ji temple, and it’s only about 500 yen. The view from the top of the mountain is absolutely stunning! The photo I took was taken in early November, so you can already see some trees starting to turn red and yellow. There are quite a few stairs to climb to the top, so if you walk up without stopping, it should take around 20-30 minutes.
Shelley L — Google review
Risshaku-ji Temple (Yamadera) was honestly one of the most impressive places I visited on this trip. From the moment I started climbing the long stone steps, I already felt that it was going to be special. The path winds through the forest, past small shrines and statues, and you can hear the sound of the bell and the wind in the trees as you go up – it’s very peaceful and a little bit magical. I visited in autumn and the colours were incredible: bright yellow, orange, and red leaves covering the mountains on all sides. Every few minutes I had to stop just to turn around and look at the view again. By the time I reached the top, the panorama over the valley and villages below completely took my breath away. It looks like a picture from a postcard, but standing there in person feels even better. The climb is a bit tiring, but not too difficult, and there are many spots where you can rest and enjoy the scenery. In the end I felt that every step was worth it. I left Yamadera feeling calm, happy, and very satisfied that I made the effort to come. If you are anywhere near Yamagata, I really recommend visiting – you won’t be disappointed.
ChuLuxe E — Google review
This a very famous temple with many tourists in the area. Nonetheless the many steps to the top are well worth the effort. The view is spectacular and the temple beautiful. But you will not be able to enjoy the temple alone as there are loads of tourists visiting. Still very worth the trip.
Bull D — Google review
1000 stair steps to reach the top. Admission fee for an adult is 500 yen. We recommend going up earlier than 11 AM because of many tourists visiting this place later on. It is worth the view as well as to embrace the beauty of the little forrest around the trail up. At the top you can expect a shrine and a little shop with drinks if you feel exhausted. The people are friendly and forthcoming despite the masses of tourists.
Ivo V — Google review
Be prepared for the need to walk up and down lots of steps to reach the top. It's a 1015-steps climb. There were however different levels for a stoppage and short rest. The fall foliage was still amazing along this pilgrimage route.

Road Station Tendo Onsen is a delightful roadside stop nestled in an onsen town, perfect for travelers looking to unwind. This charming location features a soothing footbath where you can relax while enjoying unique ice cream flavors from the Tento la France Factory, including cherry and edamame. The area also boasts a lovely park with playground facilities and water play options during summer, making it ideal for families. While the food offerings are decent, they may not stand out compared to other experiences here.
Great to make a stop on the road. You can enjoy a delicious and local flavor ice cream while bathing your foot. The shop Tento la France Factory offers amazing ice cream, with original tastes. I tried the cherry flavor and edamame flavor. They also have pear, rice, almond, chocolate... flavors. Great!!! English available. Near by there is a big shop where you can buy local products.

This is my 2nd time to stay a night here. Very crowded. There is a 24 hours supermacket and very reasonable hot spa near here. (May 25th 2024) This roadside parking area is a very popular site for staying a night in a car. You will feel difficulty to find your parking space. (June 11th 2023)

Nestled in the heart of Yamagata City, the Yamagata Folk Museum Bunshokan is a captivating destination that showcases the rich history and culture of the region. Housed in a stunning English Neo-Renaissance style building, originally constructed in 1916 as the prefectural office and assembly hall, this architectural gem reflects the elegance of early modern design. Designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan since 1984, it underwent meticulous restoration to preserve its historical integrity.
Free admission, English pamphlets available at reception. Some exhibits inside, though in Japanese. It is worth a gander and walk through, the building appears to have been meticulously restored. You can step outside onto the balcony from the grand meeting hall. There was a free temporary contemporary art exhibit inside.

Seeing the RussoJspajese war victory cup on exhibit brings back all my history lessons

This is a free museum/ historic building to explore for free. It's great on a rainy day. The old, noticeably western style, building was the prefecture office for yamagata prefecture. Many rooms are restored to original showing. Some nice views can be seen on the second floor. Inividuals who enjoy historical buildings, political sights or learning about prefecture history would enjoy this building.

Yamagata Museum of Art is a regional museum located about 1.1km from Yamagata Station, showcasing an impressive collection of Japanese paintings and renowned masterpieces of French Impressionism by artists like Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Degas, and Kandinsky. The museum aims to enrich its collection and permanent exhibits with a focus on French, Japanese & Oriental art, and local art.
It was an impressive collection and even though the museum is small it is actually much larger than other art museums I have been to in Japan. The current temporary exhibit about Kawase Hasui is very extensive and amazing. It showcases the beauty of Japan!

If you're looking for a rather unusual museum in the somewhat small city of Yamagata that happens to have a rather large amount of famous impressionists' paintings, you have found it here at the Yamagata Museum of Art. I kid you not, you will find some lovely paintings by Monet and Van Gogh here at this tiny little museum. You will also find different exhibits depending on when you are there. Enjoy!
Jared G — Google review
800¥ to go inside, and maybe you could spend 20-30 minutes. The collection was donated by Hasegawa family for Japanese Art side of the museum. The Modern French Art collection was loaned by Yoshino Gypsum, a very big building materials company. They have very beautiful Monet’s paintings: Water-Lillies & Undergrowth in Saint-German Forest, which I was truly mesmerized by those two. They have some Picasso as well.
Aulia L — Google review
An impressive calligraphy exhibit fills the majority of the museum. There is also a room of mixed artists paintings that are lovely.
Kristiana K — Google review
Amazing collection, walked in on a whim and saw some great works by Renoir, Monet, Picasso and van Gough. They also had a special exhibit upstairs featuring modern Japanese artists, including some Yayoi Kusama. Worth stopping by!
Emmy P — Google review
At first glance, this looks like just another simple art museum. However upon taking another look, one can realize that this is do much more. The works of famous artists from all over the world such as Piccaso and Monet are proudly on display and while the museum may not be grande in size, what it lacks in quality, it exceeds in quality. To balance the western art is an impressive selection of traditional Japanese art as well as well as some contemporary pieces in addition

Mitoya is a superb establishment that serves top-notch soba noodles. However, if you order tempura with your meal, be prepared for a long wait. The hot soba option may disappoint as the soup lacks flavor. Nevertheless, the restaurant offers a pleasant view of the river and provides parking options. Alternately, there is another eatery across the street with more diverse menu choices and tables available, along with its own parking area.
After a very eventful journey up and back down the mountain to Risshakuji Temple this ramen restaurant’s food replenished my energy and further warmed my feelings of this beautiful valley. The staff was friendly and language wasn’t a terrible barrier if a non Japanese speaker.

The soba soya soup was quite good but they seem short of staff and there is a long wait just for them to clear, clean the table and take our orders. While the food came quickly, my tempura was already a bit soft from being submerged in the soup for a while.

Excellent soba and our go to when visiting Yamadera (do not recommend the hot/soup one though - al dente cold is best). Small car park next to it (free). Nice view of the stream - opposite you can see the valley viewpoint up in the mountain (see pic).

Excellent soba and be prepared to wait a while if you have tempura with it. The hot soba is disappointing as the soup is very weak. A good view of the river outside and a few places for parking. At the enduring and simple soba noodle shop known as 山形一寸亭, patrons can enjoy a delicious meal consisting of thin buckwheat soba noodles in flavorful broth accompanied by tender duck meat. The venue also offers delectable tempura, adding an extra element of taste to the dining experience. This traditional establishment is frequented for weekday lunches and serves popular dishes such as cold meat soba and soupy egg over rice.
We came to this place by chance and were pleasantly surprised. There is an English menu available, and the staff understands enough English to help us order. Recommended! 'Meat soba' is a Yamagata specialty and the name doesn't do this dish justice. If you get sick of ramen and want something more exciting and filling than soba/udon, this is perfect. They serve great tempura too. For those driving, keep in mind that this place doesn't have a lot of parking.

Customers rave about the exquisite pudding and florentine, praising the perfect balance of flavors in each dessert.
Wow. Pudding is amazing, with coffee all over it. Coffee is also amazing! Place is calm and fun, great chilling vibes.

Absolutely loved the rustic decor, the vibes are immaculate. I got ginger ale which paired really well with my chocolate cake. The staff are really friendly and it was great just to relax and read. Also recommend if you want to catch up with friends here. One of the best cafés in the city in my opinion. Great job

(Translated by Google) It's a 5-6 minute walk from Wenxiang Hall. Besides the popular "Prinn," this cafe was also chosen for its retro, rustic decor. The map was a bit confusing at first, but the actual location is at a T-junction, just after turning left from the crossroads entrance, next to Shangmeitang. The interior, with its low-temperature lighting, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The cafe serves meals and afternoon tea. Since we were there during tea time, international reservations were not accepted, so we had to queue. Thankfully, peak hours had passed, and a group of customers were checking out, so we were seated. Even after 3:00 PM, the place was still packed, and the guests continued to leave right before our departure. We ordered some drinks and desserts: ▲Drinks ▶HOT ▶ボタコーヒー(ICE) ▶ジンジャエール ▶ウーロンtea ▲デザート ▶ガトー・ショコラは ▶チーズケーキ ▶アーモンドフロランタン Impressive drinks and desserts: 「ガトー・ショコラは」 The proportion of chocolate cake is quite good, especially the entrance is slightly bitter and sweet with a brandy-like aroma. It is paired with "ボタコーヒー" (HOT) It's a perfect combination, perfect for those who enjoy rich chocolate with a hint of bittersweetness. "Jinjael" My first time trying this drink, the first sip was quite unique and hard to describe, but the gingery aftertaste was unmistakable. The second sip revealed that the distinctive aroma came from the cloves. It's a truly unique drink, and if you have the chance, you should definitely try it. The "Bota Kochi" here is a rich, dark roast coffee with a mellow, lingering sweetness, perfect with dessert. Unfortunately, we didn't get to try the "Prinn" because it was sold out when we arrived. We didn't see a new batch of "Prinn" until we were checking out. If you happen to come here, be sure to order some, as takeout isn't available. After enjoying the cafe's afternoon tea, we stopped by the nearby "Minomachiya Nanakamachi Goten Weir," our last stop before dinner.

酒菜一 is a charming Japanese izakaya with a friendly manager who recommends delicious local dishes like chicken cooked in mayonnaise and wasabi. The menu, only in Japanese, can be challenging for non-Japanese speakers. Despite the early closing time at 11 pm, the inviting atmosphere and delectable food make it worth visiting.

The shop owner and waitresses are kindly and nice. Prices for different kind of 十四代 sake are fair. I am so happy that I have the chance for trying the 龍泉 in this restaurant. Hope I can go back to this Izakaya soon. There is one thing I would suggest: hope the reservation would be easier for foreigners.

A good Japanese restaurant (izakaya) .the manager there is a nice man , he recommended us some very nice local dishes, chicken cooked in mayonnaise and wasabi is there original recipe and Definitely worth a try , the menu there is only in Japanese language with no photographs so a little difficult to choose for foreigners.the only negative thing i feel is they open until 11 o’clock in the evening and the last order is 10 o’clock feels a little earlier then usual for izakaya style . Counter seats is preferable as the rooms looks a little small . The prices are a little higher side . Credit cards accepted.

For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Kajo Park, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Yudonosan Shrine. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Kajo Park is an urban park located in the city center, built around the ruins of Yamagata Castle. The park offers various attractions such as sports facilities, a children's playground, and the Yamagata City Museum of History. Visitors can explore the remnants of the castle, including the moat and the 'Honmaru Ichimonjimon Ote Bridge', which provide insights into its original structure.
Went there under the Sakura full bloom. It was wonderful. Which happened to be on Saturday so seemingly every people in Yamagata were visiting the park. A lot of people picnicking and quite a few food stalls available. Highly recommended.

Nice and quiet place for a walk during the winter season. The entrances are limited but it’s a nice walk to get there. There are remnants of the old fortification and the paths are mostly well marked. There were a couple of closed parts (safety due to snow?) but there are alternate ways to get there anyway. I liked watching the ducks float around on the stream that surrounds the park. There is a patrols rebuilt castle and a old hospital inside the park.

I’m not quite sure how anybody could give this part less than five stars it’s very beautiful. There’s a wonderful castle in the middle of it and it’s very peaceful.
Daynas — Google review
Kajo Park may seem rather empty and unimpressive at first glance, as it lacks the castle itself and only retains the castle walls. However, the view of the western sky at sunset, seen from the eastern side of the castle walls, is truly breathtaking. The park is also stunning during cherry blossom season. In fact, the absence of the castle allows the sky to appear more dynamic and beautiful—making this a rare kind of park. There's no doubt you'll find peace and healing in its quiet serenity

A castle ruin with lots of modern use. Another form of use instead of a park only. The place is very large so that it's accommodating two car parks, a sport complex and two historical landmarks there. Visiting there is so relaxing and enjoyable. I trust it will continue be developed and contribute to the society and hope I have chance to revisit this place on the future.

Castle
Historical landmark
Yamagata Castle Ruins, located in Kajo Park, is a popular spot for various events throughout the year. The park is particularly crowded during spring when visitors come to enjoy picnics and admire the hundreds of cherry trees in full bloom. Although the castle itself no longer stands and the garden may not be well-maintained, history enthusiasts can explore a small museum on site.
Came here on a Monday morning, 14/4/25. Very peaceful and quiet for a morning stroll, Sakura in bloom and there’s even a train line running next to the moat of water lined with Sakura trees. There’s no standing castle here but the space is nice and open and great for viewing Sakura.

The castle opens from mid April till Oct. Please attention to opening days if you want to visit the interior of the castle. But the park is opened all year round, good stroll even during the winter.

This castle found itself, like so many others, on the wrong side of the Meiji Restoration. Today, it's a quiet park and nice place to enjoy a bento with the family. Have a stroll through the partly reconstructed outer walls of the castle, and peer into the old well! It's not a bad ruin, or rather it is quite ruined, which is to say there isn't much left to see. It is peaceful, overall, with plenty of shade.
Benjamin C — Google review
Nothing interesting to see other than the bridge over the dry moat and the gate, as the castle is in ruins (there is no visible structures or remnants to view as there is unkempt vegetation everywhere). You could probably pass this place or sprint through just to say you’ve visited it. The peripheral structure/east gate has some exhibits to view (free admission)

Yamagata Station is a convenient transportation hub in the southern part of Tohoku region, offering easy access to exciting travel destinations such as vintage onsen towns, Mt. Zao, and local delicacies like Yonezawa Beef and Cherries. The Yamagata Shinkansen provides a picturesque two-hour and 40-minute journey from Tokyo with stunning views of the snow-covered Yamagata mountains in winter.
Yamagata Station is the main station of Yamagata Prefecture. Although it’s not as large as Sendai Station, it is very convenient with a simple layout. The surrounding area is pleasant and adds to the overall charm. Inside the station, there’s a souvenir shop where you can purchase Yamagata’s famous food and local goods, making it a great spot for travelers to pick up gifts.

Hirata Bokujo Tonkatsu Restaurant offers succulent and satisfying set meals with a beautiful golden crispy coat of crumbs. The menu, mostly in Japanese, is easy to read, and the staff are super friendly and accommodating. The restaurant has an open and airy inside with a nice quiet aesthetic. They serve one of the best Tonkatsu in Japan with tasty pork options and two delicious sauces to choose from: original or miso garlic.
There’s happy hour 4-6pm and the cheapest tonkatsu set goes for 880yen. Didn’t know it was famous and we just walked in due to the offer. We were blown by the value it offers. And now we are way too full and definitely satisfied.

Very friendly staff, prices were decent for amount of food. They provide free black tea with a jug to keep refilling throughout. Condiment options were plenty. Pork curry tasted amazing. Wish I had more meat with it.

We ordered 2 set meals that are on special, which took 800 yen off our total bill. It was succulent and has beautiful golden crispy coat of crumbs. Sooo good and satisfying! We went today (Sunday night) thinking there is happy hour between 1400 to 1800 (based on just people's reviews) but apparently not today. Need to check with them what days they have happy hour specials.

It was delicious. However, there was a clear ending... This was my first time staying in the Yamagata Station area, and a business partner I visited for work had made a reservation at his favorite restaurant, so I was going to go there, but I ended up going to this restaurant by mistake. 💦 Fortunately, I was able to find a delicious restaurant, and I was relieved that the restaurant I had booked with was not inconvenienced, but I was clumsy for the first time in a while. However, from the perspective of a sake lover, I was disappointed that the recommended sakes were often sold out. Situated within the station, it is convenient and also offers an English menu for international visitors.

Zao Ropeway Zao Sanroku Station is a year-round cable car located at a ski resort, offering breathtaking scenic views and access to a mountaintop restaurant. The area is famous for the Juhyo, or snow monsters of Zao, which are a rare natural wonder.
I came in the afternoon after the peak hours, barely anyone in the queue and i was able to get into the cable car pretty quickly. I saw the morning queue and i decided to spend my first half of the day snowboarding on the other side of the mountain/entrance. I recommend spending the morning skiing/ snowboarding on the otherside and come in the afternoon after all the big groups of tourists for sightseeing have left for the day. Totally worth it, the view was amazing and out of this world. Really the highlight of my trip. If you are an expert, it would be an amazing experience to ski/ snowboard from the top of the mountain along with the snow monsters. I will definitely come again!!
Naomi A — Google review
We got there around 3pm, and there were tons of parking spots! The price was a bit steep, and I wish they could show me the cams from the second section. I spent 2000 yen just to get there, and I only stayed for 5 minutes because I couldn’t see much up there. The photos are from the first section, and you can see how foggy it is in my other review.
Shelley L — Google review
Here is my objective review of the Zao Ropeway Juhyo experience, 4/5, for obvious reason - the freaking queue time! We took the 7am plus bus from Yamagata station (be sure to queue early from there to make sure you get a seat on the bus!). You need to buy a ticket from the bus ticket counter, 2,400 yen for round-trip. It takes 40 minutes to reach here. Once reached, it'll be an easy 10 mins walk to reach there at 8:30am. This is a weekday, so we were genuinely surprised that the queue is at least 100 metres long. There was first a queue to purchase tickets, then another queue to the ropeway. The first part of the ropeway was particularly slow. There is only one small carriage up and down, ONE carriage! No wonder it takes forever to get everyone up. It took us probably 1.5 hours for our turn, bear in mind we reach at opening time. A lot of the tour group were lucky enough to secure priority lane (we tried to get the online ticket, but it was sold out very quickly every day). When we got in, we got squeeze packed like sardines, and the worker in charge will be sure to fill the carriage to the brim. So I must say the ingress experience was extremely poor, which is not what I'd expect from Japanese operators. Once we're up to the midway station, the experience gets better, and the second section of the ropeway is defined more enjoyable. Take us almost no queue to get up this time. The view from there onwards is magical. To know that Juhyo is a rare natural occurrence that happens only in certain areas in Tohoku makes it extra special. Also, I felt lucky to experience the dry snow at the top of the mountain. Saw a lot of skiers there. If I were to back here, I'd love to ski here. I think the view at the top compensated the terrible experience at first, but there is surely way to make it better. The ticket was very pricey, and the wait is just unjustifiable. It's time for an upgrade on the first section ropeway, for sure. For the view and Johyu experience, I'd recommend it, but you just have to come early and manage your expectations at the start. It took us 4 hours in total for this experience, and we made it in time to leave at 12 and head to Ginzan onsen next.
Louis L — Google review
Visited Zao Ropeway (Zao Sanroku Station) on a weekday in mid-February, and despite it not being the weekend, the queue was still very long. With so many tourists visiting to see the famous snow monsters, the wait time was almost an hour. However, once I got on the ropeway, it was absolutely worth it. The ride up offered stunning views of the snow-covered mountains, and at the top, the snow monsters (frozen trees) looked surreal—like something out of a fantasy world. The scenery alone made the long wait worthwhile.
Paul A — Google review
It really depends on the weather. During my visit; wind is too strong and snow are too heavy. Cant really enjoy the view and see the snowy trees. When we are at the top with king zao, wind is super strong and everyone out there had a frozen damage on our face. Nevertheless, great experience!
Wesley W — Google review
I went during early autumn so nothing much to see. I went to the highest station and it was rainy and misty so nothing much to see as well. So do consider the weather before you purchase the ticket. The weather got clearer when at the first station. There is a viewing point around 5min walk from the station.
Ai — Google review
Very poor operation. We didnt make it to the elevator because the waiting queue up to 2 hrs and our tour time didnt allow more time to wait. (we have 3 hours here but cant make it) If you want to see frosted trees there, make sure that you can spend a whole day in this area. DONT BOOK IT IN A TOUR, time is very risky.
Kiều V — Google review
Great season to look at the snow monsters in February. The view at the mountains was simply amazing! Arrived at around 11am, we were able to get in cable car with a short queue of around 15-20 minutes. Tickets were bought on site from a vending machine. We were lucky enough to go straight up to mountain top to see snow monsters thanks to the weather. It was freezing cold up there with only -8 degrees. But the view was magnificent. Note: keep the cable car tickets with you all the time, you will need it for 2 cable car sections up the mountain and return

Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a charming mountain village near Sendai city, offering natural hot springs and stunning winter scenery. Visitors can enjoy skiing on slopes suitable for all skill levels and then relax in outdoor hot springs at a reasonable price.

A frustrating experience at this open ski area. It’s easy to get lost, and I somehow managed to lose my cell phone in the process. There are too many flat areas where you’re forced to take off your snowboard and walk—definitely not ideal. The weather didn’t help, and to top it off, there were way too many non-skiers taking the cable car up just for photos, blocking the way for those of us trying to actually ski. Not the best place for serious snow sports enthusiasts!

A Paradise of Snow Monsters and Winter Adventures If you’re traveling to Yamagata in winter, Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a must-visit destination. The resort offers a diverse range of courses for all levels from gentle slopes to tight tree runs Get into the Zao Rope Way Sanrokusen for Juhyo Kogen station where you can have some fun with the snow. From Juhyo Kogen Station get into the Zao Rope Way Sanchosen and you will reach to the top(around 1661m). In you way you can see the Snow Monsters JFYI: there might be strong winds at the top so make sure to be prepared with proper wears and shoes. For skiers/snowboarders: the resort is huge and it’s easy to get lost. So have a course map with you. For snowboards : there are lots of flat areas where you have to remove your snowboard and walk for the next lift. Access: Get a bus from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen. A one way ticket will cost around 1200Yen

Best experience in Japan. You have to check the weather first. On a fine day, the monster are visible and you can play with snow. We took the ropeway. There are 2 station on the way. Last one is the main spot to see the mighty snow monster. There is also ski area and onsen area. Ropeway round trip price is around 4200 yen. At night there are some illumination also. It was freezing ❄️ cold. Must wear snow boots and take heat patch. It will helpful to survive 😅. Once in a life time experience as Yamagata has one of the highest snowfall area. For ski, pre booking is must. There are restaurant on the last stop. On the first floor, one suvenior shop is there. Vending machine is available to buy hot drinks. Washroom facilities are also in good condition. 10/10 ( as i get the perfect views and nice weather ) in

Discover a hidden gem of a ski resort that offers an extraordinary experience! This resort is a paradise for ski enthusiasts who appreciate pristine snow conditions, breathtaking scenic views, and unique local features. The ski tracks are beautifully maintained, nestled among majestic snow-covered trees, and the resort’s distinctive tree monsters add a whimsical charm to the landscape. Unlike the busier and more commercialized ski destinations, this resort provides a tranquil escape, ensuring that the slopes are less crowded and the overall experience is more intimate. Its budget-friendly nature, compared to more popular resorts like Niseko, makes it an excellent choice for those seeking value without compromising on quality. A useful tip for future visitors: remember to carry cash, as many of the cozy, on-site restaurants prefer it over card payments. While the resort boasts an ample number of ski coaches, travelers should be aware that English communication may be limited. Despite this, the friendly and accommodating staff ensures a welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone. Overall, if you’re in search of an authentic ski getaway where you can connect with the essence of winter sports in a serene and picturesque setting, this resort is an unbeatable choice. Don’t miss out on this less-trodden winter wonderland!

This a great ski resort, especially for beginners and sightseeing. There are some advanced hills, but not many so this isn't the place to come for big thrills. The beginner slopes are great for learning though! There's a lot of long, simple runs. Also, a lift ticket isn't much more expensive than a ropeway ticket so if you want to see the snow monsters you might as well go skiing too. Only real complaint is some awkward flat/uphill spots here and there that required me to take off my skis and walk a couple times.
Michael M — Google review
Exceptionally beautiful ski/board course. The trees look magical covered in snow. Has several beginner areas. The panoramic route through the snow monsters is amazing. Although there are a lot of flat areas in between. Free shuttle Buses run between the gondolas till evening. Gondolas stop operating a bit early so plan otherwise. You can take a gondola to the top with a separate ticket as well. Illumination was cancelled the night i went due to bad weather.

One of my favorite ski resorts in Japan. So many slopes to choose from and great tree runs for starters. Although we missed the many snow monsters since it has wilted into snow skeletons, it was still great experience. I hope to come back again next season with fresh powder. The town was amazing as well with lots of great local people.

Okama, also known as Zao Okama, is a stunning emerald volcanic crater lake located on the Zao Mountains in Japan. It can be reached by road, hiking trail, or ski lift and offers rewarding views to those who make it to the top. The lake is famous for its ever-changing colors depending on the angle of sunlight and is surrounded by unique alpine dicentra flowers.
Took a ropeway from the zao village to the top and hiked for about one hr to reach the top. The hike is easy and scenic. The weather got too foggy as we reached the peak near the crater. So the view was blocked. It’s also quite windy up there.

Fantastic experience visiting Okama. Parked at the visitor center entrance, with a fee of Y550. Took us ~2 hours to hike up to the peak and to see the stunning views. Along the way to the peak, you would already see amazing views of the Gokishinuma (5 colored pond) that was caused by volcanic activities in the past. Definitely recommend to go!

Okama looks absolutely gorgeous in the early to mid April period, when the snow is partially covering the surrounding slopes, partly showing the brown earth below. Under a blue sky, this 残雪 (Zansetsu) scene offer in my opinion one of the best view of Okama. These are photos were taken at 13/4/2024 after a 45min hike from the Zao Jizo Sancho Station Something to take note of: (1) the last descending cable car leave at 4:45pm at this time of the year, (2) The trails are mostly covered under loose melting snow, those trail without snow are very muddy. Although I did it with just a gaiter and not fully waterproof shoe, I would strongly suggest good waterproof shoe, gaiter, snowshoe or trekking pole. (3) You can find the gps route and more hiking info from Yamap. (4) These photos were shot at the viewpoint just to the east of Kumanodake 熊野岳 which I think offer better scenery at this time of year compared to the more southern viewpoints.

I’ve skied at Zao several times, but this was my first summer visit. I have always wanted to hike and see Okama, and I would recommend this spot if you can. We drove up in a personal vehicle, but there are hiking trails and a chair lift a bit below the uppermost parking lot if you’re not driving. We also saw some cyclists biking up! There are many great hikes around, and of course, you can see the famous snow monsters without their snow!

It's a great place to visit. Emerald lake in volcano crater looks so magic.Amazing view from top of mountain. But Weather may be really unpredictable. So be aware about it and ready for any case. There are many ways to reach the place:by car, by free shuttle, by rope way or hiking. Parking place usually gets full very quickly,it's better to come before 10am. Hiking courses to the Okama crater are very good for any age and conditions. Never have try so enjoyable course.

One of Yamagata's hidden treasures. Be sure to take a tour of the neighbouring tea house. The garden is renown for the many types of trees and beautiful autumn leaves. It has a long and interesting history which visitors can learn more about by taking a free tour.

It is a small Japanese garden with a pond. The garden is pretty far from Yamagata station but you could walk. I guess the beginning of November is the best time to visit. They have some maple trees and it was so beautiful when I went there. I saw lovely colors in the leaves.

Yamagata Marugoto-kan Kurenai-no-kuraTen offers a variety of experiences, including top making and kokeshi doll crafting. The atmosphere is family-friendly and allows for hands-on activities that children will enjoy. While the instructions are not very detailed, visitors can freely create their own kokeshi dolls. For those interested in sake, there's an opportunity to sample Yamagata's sake and purchase locally produced products such as pottery.
This place is great. One of the few Edo-style places left in Yamagata. Has a really nice gift shop.

(Translated by Google) I went there for lunch at a soba restaurant in an old building. It was a bit crowded when I entered the store, probably because it was a little late, but by the time I left, no one was there. I couldn't decide on the menu, but I went for the set that included zaru soba and fried chicken. The soba noodles are delicious, but the plump and crispy fried chicken was so delicious that I thought about adding some fried chicken. This is a store I would like to stop by when I come to Yamagata again.

Don't despise it as a soba restaurant with tourist information facilities. The retro atmosphere, cost performance, BGM JAZZ and taste are not bad at all. You might think it's an easy choice, but there is no loss to stop by.

(Translated by Google) I ate there when I stopped by Beni no Kura. It's an old building that's still in use, so when you open the door you'll see a dirt floor, giving it a great atmosphere. To enter the store, take off your shoes on the dirt floor. There is a table in a tatami room with a very nice atmosphere. It took a while to take my order, probably because it was lunchtime and there weren't many employees, but I was enjoying the atmosphere of the restaurant, so I didn't really mind. It was hot, so I chose cold meat soba. The noodles were firm and the taste was light. I thought that if you like dark eyes, a warmer one might be better. It might be good for children or people who are concerned about salt. Payment is made after the meal, and you can also pay by credit card or QR code. In addition, there is a free parking lot at Beni no Kura, and there is a large number of parking spaces, so there is no need to worry about that. I ordered the Beni no Zen. As expected, the presentation was wonderful and there were many small bowls! I'm at a loss as to where to start. I expected a bowl with something that looked like sweet shrimp on top, but that wasn't the case. I had no impression of the food. Menus that cost less than 1,000 yen may be more satisfying. It wasn't as voluminous as I expected, and I guess it's just about 80% full. Ramen restaurant
栄屋本店 is a cozy noodle house known for its specialty chilled ramen with various toppings like egg and pork. The shop is famous for inventing this style of ramen, which is perfect for hot summer days. The addition of ice cubes in the soup gives it a unique and refreshing twist. Despite its large portion size, the ramen doesn't feel heavy at all.
Great 冷やしラーメン, or cold ramen. This shop apparently invented this style and I got to say it was super refreshing and light, despite me getting 大盛り, I didn’t feel heavy at all. Under ¥1000 if you don’t get 大盛り. They put ice cubes in the soup which I found super unique. Must try ramen in Yamagata, especially during the sweltering summer heat. They have a tatami room as well to eat in which was lovely.

米沢牛 登起波 山形店 is a must-visit for anyone in Yamagata looking to savor the renowned Yonezawa beef. The restaurant offers a delightful dining experience with its tender and flavorful beef dishes, friendly staff, and pleasant atmosphere. Visitors can expect a great variety of menu options and helpful recommendations, including English menus for international guests.
I recently dined at a restaurant specializing in Yonezawa beef, and it was a luxurious experience from start to finish. The ambiance was elegant, featuring private rooms that added to the exclusivity. The service was exceptional; when I accidentally spilled my sake, they promptly replaced it without hesitation. We had the option of choosing shabu-shabu or grilled beef, and I highly recommend going with the shabu-shabu. The staff expertly handled the preparation, ensuring that the meat was cooked perfectly. Overall, it was a memorable meal, combining top-notch service with high-quality ingredients in a sophisticated setting.

Absolutely excellent yonezawa beef. We ordered sukiyaki and yakiniku + sliced raw beef and a gyusuji. Yonezawa Beef Tokiwa is one of the best yakiniku restaurants we’ve had in a long time. The local Yonezawa beef is tender and flavorful, and the sukiyaki-style beef was incredibly good. The steak on the hot plate came out perfectly cooked, with a rich aroma that filled the room. Alao loved the sweet grilled onions that paired so well with the meat. Everything tasted fresh and carefully prepared. English menu is available, and staff can speak english well. We visited twice for lunch/dinner during our stay at the hotel, and will be visiting this place again if we are in the area.

The Old Saiseikan Hospital Building, also known as the Yamagata City Local History Museum, is situated within Kajo Park. Despite its small size, it's a worthwhile visit for its blend of Western architecture and Japanese garden in the courtyard. The serene atmosphere makes it a pleasant place to explore. However, non-Japanese speakers may find the exhibits less engaging due to the lack of English information.
This is a beautiful old building with some very impressive architecture and wonderful gardens. The place has a quiet, relaxed feel to it and it's just a lovely place to have a wander around!

This is the Yamagata City Local History Museum or Saisekan Hospital Building located inside Kajo Park. Although small, it’s worth visiting, especially for its courtyard, where western architecture meets Japanese garden. However it is all in Japanese, so unless you speak it, this might not be as interesting other the the nice visuals.

Castle
Yamagata-jo Ninomaru Higashi Otemon Gate is a significant structure within the Yamagata Castle ruins, easily accessible from various points in the city. The gate offers a glimpse into the castle's history and features an open turret for public exploration, providing insights into its excavation work and historical significance. Situated near the Yamagata Shinkansen tracks, it presents an ideal photo opportunity with the castle ruins.
Very wide area but the castle is closed during the winter seasons.

A beautifully restored section of the castle that once stood at the center of Yamagata City. There are sakura trees planted here that make for an incredible scene that looks like something right out of a ghibli movie during early April.

This is one of Yamagata City's top tourist locations. I recommend visiting in Spring. There are cherry trees that line the moat and they are spectacular in full blossom.

Worth to visit
T L — Google review
(Translated by Google) Just looking at the stone walls surrounding Higashi-Ōtemon Gate, it's easy to imagine its grandeur, regardless of your understanding of the castle's scale. The two "angles" surrounding the gate on three sides provide additional defensive depth when entering the Koryo Gate from the Ote Bridge. The towering "gate turrets" and "suzuya" (turrets) create an excellent defensive barrier for attack, defense, and observation. Another unique feature is the nearly 14-meter-high main beam of Higashi-Ōtemon Gate, the "turret gate crown wood," which makes the gate's visual impact undeniable, whether viewed from the front, side, or inside and out. Viewing Higashi-Ōtemon Gate from a different angle reveals many classic Japanese aesthetics. While lacking the distinct windbreaks of the castle tower, the "roof roots" on the turrets are rich in detail. Whether it's the Chidori-pofeng (a type of wind-blown pattern) and hanging fish (a type of fish) ornaments on the gables, or the simple, yet impressive, "maru" tiles and the "chiwei" (a type of ridged tail) on the "roof tiles," they're all captivating. After completing our visit, we headed from Higashi-Otemon Gate to the Mogami Yoshimitsu Historical Museum.

Gyudon restaurant
Matsuya Yamagata Station is a convenient and popular chain restaurant located just a short walk from the station's east gate. The restaurant offers delicious and affordable meals, including their famous gyudon. Visitors can expect fast and friendly service in a clean environment, with the added convenience of being open 24 hours. Whether you're looking for a quick bite or a satisfying meal, Matsuya Yamagata Station is sure to please with its tasty offerings and efficient service.
We came here for some food past-midnight - one of the few open 24 hours places to go to. You order from a screen and receive a ticket before taking a seat. There’s an option for English and other languages. The food was good, by no means gourmet, but really good rice bowls. I would say it’s a step up from conbini food. You can definitely get a filling and good tasting meal for a cheaper price than other places. We had the beef steak with cheese rice bowl and the hamburger steak with egg. Both were filling with a set (soup + salad) and delicious.
Arief Z — Google review
Stopped by Matsuya at Yamagata Station for a quick meal and ordered the chicken curry—and it did not disappoint. The curry had a rich, savory flavor with just the right amount of spice, perfectly complementing the tender and juicy chicken. The portion was satisfying, and the rice was cooked just right, making for a hearty and comforting meal, especially in the cold winter weather. Service was fast and efficient, making it a great spot for a quick and affordable meal before catching a train. If you're at Yamagata Station and need something warm and filling, Matsuya’s chicken curry is definitely worth trying!

Soba noodle shop
The soba noodle shop そば処 庄司屋(しょうじや) 御殿堰七日町店 is a decent establishment with average prices and an English menu. They offer Juyondai sake which is highly regarded. The shrimp tempura was average, possibly due to its stacking method. The hot broth is served later in the meal. The staff are attentive and regularly refill the iced tea.
Good soba restaurant with English menu. Enjoyed the tempura very much. Charming neighborhood.
Wai F — Google review
I visited a restaurant in Yamagata, Japan, where I ordered tempura, soba noodles, and an egg roll. The portions were generous, ensuring you definitely get your money's worth. I appreciated that there was no wait to be seated, making it convenient for a quick meal. However, the service was just average; the staff were polite but not particularly attentive. While the food was satisfying and filling, the overall experience felt a bit lacking in warmth. If you're looking for a hearty meal without the hassle of a long wait, this place is a solid choice.
Michelle — Google review
Decent soba place. Average prices, English menu available. Juyondai sake was good. Average/so-so shrimp tempura, it was not that crispy probably because of the way it was stacked (placed at the end/bottom) They will bring the hot broth later when you’re almost finished the noodles. They are attentive with refilling the iced tea. Spacious restaurant with an upper floor.

This ramen shop is a must-go-to-place for everyone visiting Yamagata. The soba is hand-made & tastes delicious, the shop is located in a lovely area & the staff is nice as well. Recommend 100%
Marcello G — Google review
We were one of the few guests there at the time and was given kind service. One of my kids was taking the soup out because it was too hot to eat. She was given an extra bowl to scoop out the soup. The second child enjoyed her tempura that came with the meal which was the first time she had it. It was her first time trying soba also and it's not her preference, but I enjoyed my zaru soba which I ate happily. Please enjoy and the service and the food.

Yakiniku restaurant
Kakashi is a small restaurant that opens at 5:00 PM and tends to get crowded quickly. Despite the size, the staff is friendly and helpful. The menu can be accessed through a QR code, and there's an English menu ordering tablet available. The Yamagata beef sets are popular for lunch, offering good value with unlimited rice, soup, and a drink. Customers appreciate the delicious beef and reasonable prices.
Stopped by for lunch and had one of their Yamagata beef sets. The set came with unlimited rice, soup and orange juice/tea and was good value for money. The beef was really delicious as well. They have an English menu ordering tablet.

6/1/25 - 4.5 stars A very well positioned and advertised yakiniku spot right next to the Yamagata station and above the bus terminal. Initially saw it on the way to Zao Onsen and had no lunch plans on the way out, so, gave it a go. It's definitely not bad with a clean and crisp decor as well as good service. Beef is definitely high quality and tastes like it. The only thing that I didn't like was that it doesn't feel like as good value as I'd hoped. Both the yakiniku sets and beef bowls were a bit small for lunch. Karubi don Flavour: S+, 8.5/10. Not as good as some of the Yamagata beef we had in the ryokans, but, still quite good Texture: S+, 8.5/10. Value: A, 7/10. ¥1400 for 5 slices with a bunch of vegetables, rice and miso soup Yakiniku teishoku: S+, 8.5/10. Better cuts than the karubi bowl and 7 pieces. ¥2200 feels more reasonable Beef tongue set: A+, 8.5/10. Only 4 pieces and ¥1900. Certainly tasted good though. Roast beef bowl: A, 7/10. Probably better to get the yakiniku sets in retrospect

I recently had the pleasure of trying Yamagata wagyu for dinner, and it was a delightful experience. What struck me most was the unique texture of the wagyu. While it didn't have the intense marbling that some wagyu varieties are known for, it was incredibly tender and had a melt-in-your-mouth quality that was simply divine. The restaurant itself is conveniently located on the second floor of the train station, making it easily accessible. Overall, I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to savor the subtle yet exquisite flavors of Yamagata wagyu.
Merry M — Google review
Very good food & price is reasonable in my opinion. The place is quite small so you might wait, and I came just 5 minutes after it opens (opens at 17:00) and become the last person that can enter without wait. Order needs to be done through QR code & friendly staff!

Yamadera Bashō-kinenkan Museum is located up the hill from the station, offering a lovely view of the town and temples. The museum itself is housed in an amazing building with great architecture and features original scrolls by Basho and art by his contemporaries. While small and with limited contents, it provides interesting history on the poet Basho. Visitors can also enjoy a temporary exhibition of scroll paintings.
The Basho museum is up the hill from the station, on the opposite side to the temples. It’s actually a lovely view as you get to the top of the town and temples opposite. The museum itself is in amazing building - great architecture- there’s no photos inside, but they have some of Basho’s original scrolls as well as art by hi contemporaries. Unfortunately only some of the exhibits have English descriptions, which is sad, because some of the meaning is lost when you don’t know the background to what you are looking at. There’s also a map showing some of Basho’s journey and a video documentary. Admission is ¥400.

Very small museum, and over priced for what there is there. It's up a hill, not worth the walk. Everything is only in Japanese. The area is very nice, but I recommend spending more time on the hike and temples and shrines more than on the museums in this area.

Nestled within the stunning landscape of Yamagata, Konponchudō at Risshakuji is a captivating destination that beckons travelers with its rich history and breathtaking views. After ascending a challenging flight of stone stairs, visitors are greeted by the vibrant colors of flags adorning the temple and the fragrant aroma of incense wafting through the air, inviting those who wish to offer their prayers.
This is the first of all temples before you would begin your hike uphill to the upper mountain area. It certainly is worth to stop here and enjoy the beauty of this place, as it can be pretty motivating to hike up to the upper temples.

(Translated by Google) There are three routes to visit the temple from Yamadera Station: Route 1: Walk along the Yamadera Hoju Bridge and ascend the Kagura-iwa Trail. You can then visit Risshakuji Temple, the Sanmon Gate near the ticket office, Hie Shrine, the Emperor Seiwa's Imperial Treasure Pagoda, the Basho-style monument, and finally reach Konpon-chu-do Hall. This route is a bit far. Route 2: This is the main route up the mountain, ascending from the Hie Shrine entrance, passing the Emperor Seiwa's Imperial Treasure Pagoda, the Basho-style monument, and finally reaching Konpon-chu-do Hall. Route 3: Take the trail directly to Konpon-chu-do Hall from the trailhead on the far right. Regardless of which route you choose, this is the most bustling temple we visited that day, for three main reasons: First, it's one of three designated "Important Cultural Properties" on the Yamadera Risshakuji Information Map, the others being the Three-Storied Pagoda and the Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property, Nokyo-do Hall. Second, at the temple entrance, a half-human-tall statue of the "God of Fortune," one of the Seven Lucky Gods, is enshrined. Ebisu, the smiling god of wealth, is more familiar to many, often seen at restaurants and shops. This time in Yamagata, in addition to Ebisu, we also visited two other gods of fortune: the "Hokyofukudai-son" here and the "Kurao Daikokuten" statue at the Torikado Observatory. Third: The "roof" is not built in the typical "Karaha-style" style common in shrines, but rather in the "Irimoya-zukuri" style with a "mukaibi" (moku-pai). However, this place has a strong historical connection with Kyoto's "Hieizan Enryakuji Temple." In particular, the "hall" is derived from the "Fumoe no Hoto" (a lantern of the same site). Furthermore, the rebuilt temple hall bears the marks of over 600 years of age, with the "roof" constructed of beech and copper sheets, another key attraction for worshippers. Due to the large crowds that day, framing the view was difficult. Those wishing to pray up close, especially for the popular "Shofukufukufuku-no-Daimon," had to wait in line. Whether praying for a child or healing an ailment, many people touch it in the hope of bringing good luck, resulting in noticeable color differences in the wood grain. After a brief pause, we returned to the "Sanmon" entrance to begin our exploration of the mountain temple today.

Located in Kajo Park, the "Yamagata Prefectural Museum" is a modest institution showcasing local natural and social history through permanent and temporary exhibitions. The museum introduces visitors to the nature and culture of Yamagata Prefecture, featuring displays on the region's animals, plants, fossils, and historical artifacts. Additionally, it hosts national treasures such as the Jomon no Megami statue.
I didn’t see any other visitors. They should be more popular!

Museums
The Yamagata Museum of Science and Industry is a seasonal museum that offers interactive exhibits showcasing creative science and industry concepts. Visitors can explore hands-on activities and marvel at a giant pendulum display. This family-friendly attraction caters to both adults and children, providing free admission for all. Although the staff primarily communicate in Japanese, they make an effort to assist visitors in English as best they can.
This place is definitely not just for kids! Even adults can enjoy, I had fun learning about electricity. A Staff (i couldn’t get his name), probably a professor, was so kind to explain all what’s the exhibit’s all about! I am really thankful for his help, I hope to see him again if I get a chance to ho back there! Since my Japanese Skill isn’t good, it was a bit difficult to understand everything but everything is so interactive, we can learn by trying them out. The best part is it’s totally free! Coming here made me want to learn more, study more! Overall it was a best Science Museum I have been to!

AMAZING AND FREE ADMISSION (pay for parking only) Kind of stumbled on this place via a google maps search of the area as we were looking for something kid-friendly to do. We were not disappointed. We got here early, around 11 am and there weren't that many people. We were given numbers as they limit the number of people in the facility due to COVID. There are hand sanitizer stations everywhere, and popular exhibits are frequently wiped down or there is a staff on hand to assure that sanitizer is used and touched items are further disinfected. The museum is located in the Yamagata Chamber of Commerce building and there is parking inside of the building. We were there for about 2 hours and spent about 500 yen in parking fees. You access the museum from the 4th floor of the building, right by the elevators. It was a little tricky to figure out where we were supposed to enter. The kids had a blast, learned something about science, which is what we were able to interpret to them since everything is written in Japanese. Highlight for them was the drawing table on the bottom floor where an attendant would scan your image and it would appear as a sea creature on the screen. Highly Recommended!! :)

The Utagata Inari Shrine, a Shinto shrine located in Yamagata City, played a significant role in the lighting ceremony of the Hanagasa Festival parade. Due to its cancellation this year, a project team was formed to find an alternative way to enjoy the festival. With full cooperation from the Yamagata City Children's Association Development Association, 100 children were asked to draw lanterns to brighten up the city.

(Translated by Google) 2024.10.5 [Utakake Inari Shrine] Our company was founded in the 4th year of Genna (1618, early Edo period) when the predecessor temple, Gobutsu-zan Kissho-in, enshrined the Inari-sama that was recommended from Fushimi, Kyoto through a syncretization of Shinto and Buddhism. At that time, this temple was located at Inariguchi, Yamagata Castle (near present-day Yamagata Station). It was customary for those who came to pray to offer songs. This is because there was a bridge nearby that you were not allowed to cross unless you read the song. It is said that the name ``Utakake'' was born from the custom of people dedicating these songs. (Songs include waka, tanka, and renga). I believe that when the shrine was transformed into Inari Shrine, in keeping with the customs of these people, the name Utakake remained as the name of the company, and Utakake Shrine was enshrined. Coincidentally, in 1614, Mogami Yoshimitsu, the 11th lord of Yamagata Castle at the time, passed away. In other words, it seems that Lord Yoshimitsu was still alive and well at the time of Kisshoin. Lord Yoshimitsu was feared as a wise general by military commanders from other countries, but he was also a man who was skilled in literature, and it is said that his hobby was composing poems. What an elegant story, isn't it? I also received a goshuin stamp. thank you very much. Tsuki Cafe is a popular spot near Yamagata Station, offering a variety of coffee options and an authentic taste. The cozy two-story building provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal place to relax or write. With attentive staff and the availability of Wi-Fi, it's perfect for enjoying hot lattes while watching passers-by from the open windows on the second floor. Additionally, their food menu includes satisfying desserts like apple tart and carrot cake.
A surprising find! This place is nice and cozy and the coffee was a very pleasant surprise. They have a number of beans available (some were out of stock) that i am planning to get on a future visit. The place was very warm and there was a faint odor of kerosene from the heaters that they used. It’s not enough to distract from the good coffee but you take note when you enter. Surprisingly, this adds to the overall feel of the cafe. I was not able to sample the food, but will do so next time.

Addendum: I came back and had COE coffee and the carrot cake which was a satisfying dessert.

We planned to visit Yamadera in the afternoon and decided to try this restaurant due to free parking, vegetarian options and good reviews. We decided to order set (1200 yen) and one more bowl of soup to try the local food, unfortunately it was a disappointment. Although the taste not bad, the serving is below expectations. We used the toilet facilities. The gent and ladies were not properly separated, and the ladies cubicles are super small. But the free parking did compensate some the disappointment. In short, if you need proper place for nice lunch, this may not be the right place. But if you need a quick stop, having small bites and save money on parking, yes for this place.

Stopped by here just before taking the steps up to Yamedara temple. Ordered an imoni stew set (Y1200) and an oden (Y600). Food was so-so, but worth the price that they charge, especially being so near the tourist attraction. One tip on parking - there are many places charging Y500 for full day parking, but there are a few free parking areas in obscure places, so if you are lucky you can park around the area for free.

WOW. 美味しかったですよ!I really loved my ramen lunch plate and my friends enjoyed the soba. It was all fresh and delicious. We ordered drinks after the meal, but then realized we were about to miss our train at the last minute. The servers we super helpful and brought tea and cream soda quickly, but my coffee wasn’t going to be ready in time, so they gave me a refund. Then, above and beyond my expectations, the head waiter handed me a cup of soft serve as we running out the door. It was so nice! I really recommend this place after a hike up the mountain.

In Yamagata, Japan, a must-try dish is the "山形名物 どんどん焼きと焼きそば どんちゃん" (Donchanyaki). This chewy and fluffy delicacy surpassed expectations, offering a delightful twist on the traditional okonomiyaki. The restaurant's expanded menu includes salt yakisoba, dondon yaki, and tender beef tendon.

(Translated by Google) I bought Dondon Yaki for takeout! The total cost of Dondon-yaki and Gari Mayo Dondon was 800 yen (breakdown unknown). This was my first time eating Dondon-yaki, and it was so chewy and delicious! 🤤 It's different from okonomiyaki! Even if you wrap it around your chopsticks, it won't fall apart. I've become a fan of grilled food! Why 2 stars? The shop is small, and despite it being small, it's noisy and noisy, so it was a little difficult to ask where and who to ask for takeout. After paying and being told that it would take 5 to 10 minutes to bake, I left the place for a while and when I came back to pick it up, the female clerk gave me the money, right? It was confirmed. . How about issuing an exchange ticket or receipt instead of checking? I felt a little disappointed. The Dondon-yaki itself was delicious, so if I were to eat it, I would probably eat it at another restaurant. (Tarako-chan the mascot dog is not there every day.)

Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Suzuran is a chic restaurant that offers a variety of seafood, classic Japanese dishes, and Chinese options. Visitors have praised the hospitality of the staff and the chef's generosity in serving unexpected high-quality appetizers. The sashimi platter and sake are highly recommended. The restaurant also features private rooms for intimate dining experiences. Guests have enjoyed delicious local cuisine, particularly highlighting the mountain beef sukiyaki as a must-try dish.
Visited during my honeymoon trip in January this year and had the most enjoyable dining experience here, thanks to the hospitality of the staff especially the chef! Be sure to have their sashimi platter if you happen to be around. Sake was good. The chef was particularly generous in serving us unexpected appetisers that are of great quality. Was planning to visit a second time the next night but did not make it because of change of plans to visit another city. Will definitely revisit if I happen to return to Yamagata.

Extremely recommended!! Though the store looks pretty old styles, the food is really nice!!! Have opened for 50 yrs… recommend 天ぷら, 刺身 and 芋鍋. Fried potatoes are sweet, raw fish are fresh served with sushi rice….will definitely come back when I visit Yamagata again!!!

(Translated by Google) [A Popular Restaurant Where You Can Savor the Bounty of Yamagata's Sea and Land] "Aji no Mise Suzuran" Yamagata It all started by chance. "Business Hotel Okazawa" I happened to be staying in Yamagata, and by chance, there was a room available, so I booked it. I was surprised to learn from a guest's post that it was a sister restaurant! It's famous as a filming location for "Tabizaru," but it's also a renowned restaurant frequented by many celebrities and famous people! Thanks to this connection, This time, I enjoyed fresh fish from the Sea of Japan, Yamagata's signature Yamagata beef, and, Yamagata is famous for its soba noodles. And, with local Yamagata sake. However, I'm so grateful for the attentive service of the staff!!! (Translated by Google) I came to Yamagata Castle on a castle tour, so I went to Suzuran, a famous Yamagata restaurant. The sashimi platter had tags with the names of fish on them, and the restaurant really puts the customer first. The chef also served us Yamagata beef and another dish to go with our drinks. The bracken pickled in a single piece and shiso rolls were also excellent as a snack with our drinks. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also good, and the hospitality was simply amazing. It was a restaurant that I would like to recommend to many people.

(Translated by Google) While many restaurants around Yamagata Station have early last orders, this restaurant is open until 11pm. The restaurant has lovely paintings on display and is very lively, so it was a very pleasant experience! However, it seemed very busy and a few orders were skipped, so next time I'd like to avoid busy times and visit during these times! The food, drinks, and service were all fantastic!!!
