El Chalten in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in El Chalten, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
El Chaltén is known as Argentina’s trekking capital, with trailheads leading straight from town into Los Glaciares National Park and iconic views of Mount Fitz Roy. Visitors come for its dramatic granite peaks, glacial lakes like Laguna de los Tres, and vast Patagonian landscapes ideal for hiking, climbing, and photography. The village itself is small and laid-back, offering basic comforts, local cuisine, and a frontier atmosphere at the end of the road. Its remote location also makes it a good base for experiencing Patagonian wildlife and wide-open night skies.
With favorites like PAISA High Mountain Coffee, La Chocolateria Josh Aike, and Supermercado Souvenir y Artesanías, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Techado Negro Restaurant and Estepa Resto Bar so you can get the best taste of El Chalten while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Waterfalls
Chorrillo del Salto is a popular destination for short hikes and picnics, located in the El Chalten valley of Patagonia. The 5 to 6-mile trail takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete and winds through the picturesque Lenga forest, offering views of stunning flowers along the way. Accessible by car or on foot, it's recommended to drive due to dusty gravel roads.
Beautiful waterfall, where you can hang arround and chill by the water. There's also a path that leads to the top, and can get a different view and calmness. I was lucky enough to encounter 3 woodpeckers, very close to the fall. Had a great time
Francisco F — Google review
Not far from city for walking and don’t need to pay entrance fee. But you need to walk on the main road that hv the ton of dusk when car passing. The waterfall is beautiful in falls season but it’s just small waterfall
Preaw F — Google review
The trail is easy to walk for anyone, including children. Theres not much elevation and still if you want to make it easier you can always walk through the route instead of the walking trail. Great for a nice and short walk if you have some spare time in El Chalten.
Camila B — Google review
This is one of the free walks/hikes in El Chaltén and an absolute must-do. The trail is very flat, making it an easy and enjoyable walk, and it only takes about an hour to reach the destination. The scenery along the way is quite picturesque, adding to the charm. There’s a car park available at the site, and toilets are provided, but be prepared—bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as the facilities were in poor condition when we visited. One of the best parts is that there’s no park fee, so it’s a great option for anyone exploring El Chaltén on a budget. Highly recommended!
Alain M — Google review
very pretty waterfall and the hike isn’t too far off of the main road. you can park in the main carpark for a short walk, or you can do it as part of a 1.5km hike :)
Emma D — Google review
The waterfall is not very big and amazing, but if you have about 2 hours and don't know how to spend it - have a walk to it. Compared to other points of interest, the road is flat and takes 30-40 min to get there from the end of the city or just 5 min from the parking near the waterfall. The water is clear and you can drink it, as well as there're a lot of calafate berries nearby.
Anastasia L — Google review
Beautiful waterfall! Pretty full of people midday but worth it for the view! To avoid paying to get into the park, you walk up the road instead which I imagine isn’t as pretty of a walk as the trail
Katherine L — Google review
A beautiful walk from El Chalten to this waterfall, one hour at slow step but it's worth the effort no doubt.

Coffee shop
PAISA High Mountain Coffee is a charming coffee shop located in El Chalten, Argentina, a mountain town known for its easy-to-access hikes and vibrant atmosphere. The shop offers excellent coffee with a detailed flavor profile, making it a great spot for coffee enthusiasts. The friendly staff and comfortable seating make it an ideal place to unwind after a day of hiking in the Patagonian mountains.
The double cappuccino with cinnamon and chocolate was so good! Definitely not too sweet; a gourmet coffee. The toast with ham and cheese was also stretchy and delicious
Ximena V — Google review
Amazing coffee, super delicious desserts and yogurt parfait as well. Very friendly service. Cozy place to rest a bit after the hike
Hasmik M — Google review
Our favorite cafe in El Chaltén! The Paisa Arepa and Serrano Bruschetta are great, and they also have a nice orange poppyseed cake.
Caroline A — Google review
Coffee was so good and you can see Fitzroy from outside seats. (Don’t expect too much though) While I was enjoying my coffee outside, wind blew and my wife’s hot chocolate was spilt but they refilled kindly. I recommend this place.
김윤철 — Google review
Great coffee and light breakfast in El Calafate. I was missing my daily cold brew after a week in Argentina. But, was pleasantly they had cold brew here. We also liked the hot chocolate and arepas, went back twice in as many days
Isaac — Google review
In my opinion, the best coffee in town. I normally order a flat white, but we decided to try their Americano. A lot of places add either too much or too little water, but Paisa has it spot on – it’s one of the nicest cups of coffee I’ve ever had. We went back a second time and will probably visit another two or three times before we leave. Great place!

Restaurant
Located in El Chalten, Argentina, La Tapera is a charming dining spot that offers an authentic taste of the country. The menu features classic dishes such as grilled meats, soups, salads, and homemade pastas made with locally sourced ingredients for freshness and authenticity. The cozy ambiance within a wooden cabin adds to the experience. Visitors can start their day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on explorations to attractions like Viedma Glacier.
Ordered bife de chorizo and had a blast. The meat was so big, we ate all the sides and asked them to cook again. After dinner, they offered for us to try their liquor, and it was amazing.

Best food in El Chalten. Super friendly service, cozy atmosphere and delicious food, especially beetroot crepes.we visited twice during our short stay and every dish we had was good
Hasmik M — Google review
I was so happy to eat here after a long day of hiking! Arrive early because it is popular (for a reason). My tour guide recommended it, so I decided to try it. The steak in particular was mouth-watering, I would come back for it. I also liked the empanada I had, and tried some bites of lasagna and trout. You can’t choose wrong, but I’ll be back for the steak. The staff are really kind and friendly, including the owner. If you’re in town, this is the place to go.
Martha S — Google review
we had an amazing experience at this restaurant. the owner has license plates all over the restaurant from all of his travels all over the world. he creates a beautiful atmosphere that permeates through the culture of the restaurant. All of the waitresses are all super attentive, enthusiastic, and kind. it made our visit feel like we were at an Argentine’s house. we absolutely recommend this place for an unforgettable experience in El Chaltén!
Margarita S — Google review
This place it’s just amazing! Our hotel recommended us this place on our arrival and it was so good that in a two day trip we went there twice. The place is so cool and the staff so kind and welcoming! And the owner so fun! 🤩 If we ever return to Argentina, we will come to El Chalten just to visit this place again!
Cristiana T — Google review
Great charming spot! We went tonight to have dinner there as a recommendation from our stay and it did not disappoint! We had the bife with potatoes, the guanaco lasagna and the pear and blue cheese salad. Everything was delishhhhh!
Fabiana S — Google review
This was the best dinner I had while in El Chalten. The restaurant is relatively small and busy so go early, make a reservation, or expect to wait. The food is worth it. Our family ordered salads, lamb ravioli, lamb casserole, and salmon ravioli. They give bread for the table too. The salads were fresh and big enough to be an appetizer for two people. It was relatively difficult to find good salad on our vacation through Patagonia so this was very welcomed. The entree portion sizes were perfect and we all left full. The lamb ravioli was excellent and exactly what I hoped for. They served refreshing homemade lemonade for our table when we requested a non-alcohol, non-soda drink option. They accepted credit cards without charging extra, but only accept tips in cash USD or pesos. Highly recommend.
Katie K — Google review
Best food we had in Argentina. They have a good food selection/variety, but this is clearly a steakhouse. All food is good but go for the meat. Bife de Chorizo is the most popular for good reason. Simple steak and potatoes dish but prepared absolutely perfectly. The portion is huge and quality is high. My wife had the tenderloin in Malbec reduction and returned a clean plate back to the server. Good wine selection and reasonable prices. We shared a good bottle of Malbec for $40000. Atmosphere is cozy charming and fun. Place is very popular, be prepared to wait. Most tables are two person but they have a couple of larger ones for big parties which were full all night with hiking tour groups. Try to leave room for dessert.

Park
Mirador de los Cóndores is a popular trailhead located near the town's visitor center, offering convenient parking. The 4km uphill trail takes about an hour to complete and provides stunning views of the town, surrounding mountains, and even Rainbow Mountain. This easily accessible viewpoint offers a great vantage point for observing Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre together. Additionally, it's an ideal spot for watching sunrises and sunsets in a quieter setting.
This trekking trail has a viewpoint with view to the famous Fritz Roy Mountain one of the most difficult climb mountain

Quite easy but windy hike, this review goes mostly to the National Park organizers that charge 45 thousand pesos for small trails and they dont invest money!!! look at the toilets in the picture please 🤢🤢🤢

Super beautiful landscape a must in el Chalten we did sounds with instruments and 3 condors were above our heads, it’s a short walk and in 25 minutes you are there, magnificent view
IGNACIA T — Google review
Very nice viewpoint; one of the not quite many easily accessible ones from which Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre can be seen together. Somewhat steeper but very passable trail; nice place for sunrises and sunsets (quieter at these times too).
Thorsten M — Google review
Here we go, the first day of our 3-day Patagonian trekking adventure, in El Chalten to see the glorious Fitz Roy snowy peak. The hike up was kinda steep but the trekking pole helped. Just make sure you adjust your pole correctly to your height. And an important tip: plant your pole close or beside you— not outward not diagonally. The tour ended in the shallow basin of a picturesque waterfall where you can wade barefoot in the slightly freezing water. If I had known ahead of time I would’ve brought my aqua shoes and a bimpo towel but that didn’t stop me from taking a refreshing feet plunge.
Bill Y — Google review
Great spot to watch the sunset - very easy hike that can be done in 20 minutes to the top, all uphill but not strenuous. Great views over the town and to the mountains in the west as well as rainbow mountain to the east. Lovely end to a light day of hiking before full day treks. Well signposted and great views had of condors.
Kevin M — Google review
El Chalten is an area of breathtaking scenary, the mountains rise up vertically making for amazing photos. There are numerous day hikes that you can do from any one of the many trails in and around the town to experience this wilderness. The town itself is merely to support tourists and climbers. During winter it was really quite with most places closed. The experience is not about the town but rather the countryside around it, just amazingly beautiful.
Bruce N — Google review
Really cool walk, very easy to do. We arrived in El Chalten around mid-afternoon and wanted to tick off somewhere to see. The map said it would take around an hour but it was much quicker than that, around 40mins at a good pace. Nice views of the town! The wind can be quite strong at times so be careful.

Nestled in the breathtaking Argentine Patagonia, Mount Fitz Roy stands tall at 3,405 meters, offering a mesmerizing playground for hikers and climbers. This iconic peak in Los Glaciares National Park boasts dramatic vistas and invigorating trails that lead to Laguna Los Tres and Laguna Torre.
The view is really nice at the end of the trek. I recommend you to come for the sunrise, the colors of the sunrise reflect on the Fitz Roy which makes the moment magical The Fitz Roy mountain range is the one featured on the Patagonia brand logo!

The trek from El Chalten to Fitz Roy was not easy at first. However, the clear waters of Lake Capri, the flawless blue sky, and the majestic peaks that we encountered after struggling to climb gave us an indescribable sense of emotion.

The magic must seat mountain outside of El Chaten! The first stop on a multi day hiking & backpacking expedition with Photopills, we hiked to viewpoints just below the peak and then around to the backside and Cerro Torre. Amazing area
Donald ( — Google review
What a beautiful hike. We did this hike in about 6 hours. I know it says 8-12 on different websites, but it wasn’t a bad hike at all. The last part before you get up to the lake is a lot of elevation in less than a mile. Lots of people on the hike and it’s very well marked.
Michael M — Google review
Fitz Roy -- A tale of granite mountain in Patagonia shaped by nature and time . I would recommend starting early in the morning to spend more time and enjoy the view .. Start before 7 am (personal suggestion). Entry fees is 45000 pesos ,if you start after 8-9 am . The first 2 kilometers of the trek and the last 1.5 kilometers is hard . Bring enough food (since the trek takes around 7-10 hrs ), i wont suggest carrying more water , after 7-8 km you have the glacier flow water to drink . If you want hiking poles you can rent them in the shops . Dont forget to cover both the lakes -- Laguna Madre (mother) and Laguna Hija (daughter)
Sreeram P — Google review
Wow. It’s drop your jaw gorgeous. Highly recommend you start early before the 7am busses arrive. It’s worth it not only for the way up, but more importantly on the way back down the narrow path passing all those people.

Techado Negro Restaurant is located in El Chalten and offers a demanding hike following the ridge from Cerro Techado Negro. The trail leads to Laguna Torre and then turns north onto the Madre & Hija trail, eventually reaching the treeline. The interior of the restaurant is vibrant and welcoming, offering a pleasant contrast to the outdoor scenery. The menu features warming soups, delicious meat dishes with traditional chimichurri sauce, as well as options for non-meat eaters.
Overall wonderful! We had the lamb (absolutely devine), local stew, and brownie dessert. All the food was absolutely delicious and the wine was great for the price (50 including tip). The service isn't stellar but I've found that to be the case everywhere in El Chanten. All in all a fantastic find.
Andrey P — Google review
Corn soup was nice but we did not enjoy the croquetas. The locro was very good. Unfortunately the pork shoulder even though it had been braised it was quite dry.
Nikko — Google review
Friendly staff, but understaffed. Slow service. Empanadas were delicious. Pork with red wine and honey reduction was only okay, fried potatoes undersalted. Excellent banana, apple, blueberry smoothie. Stuffed squash was definitely the star of the dinner. Decent selection of beers, a couple wines. Small interior.
Kathryn H — Google review
Really good service and food. We had a local Argentina stew and squid ink ravioli stuffed with Salmon. The latter was exceptional! I was truly surprised considering the humble decor of the restaurant.
Ludovic L — Google review
Wine price/quality is ok but food isn't that great. seems it's been cooked while ago. Not something you expect from the restaurant. Tried both lamb and pork 3 of 5 could be much better in Argentina.

It was the best dinner ever in South America. Food, Service, Mood.. everything was perfect! I ate Amazing beef steak, tasty homemade pasta and fresh prawn salad. I want to visit here again to eat other menu:-)

Had the misfortune of choosing this restaurant for our Christmas Eve dinner. They are understaffed and didn't fulfill the menu. Lamb wasn't seasoned, no salad, no choice for dessert. I would not recommend this restaurant. Also it was over priced for what we got. Feel ripped off
Diane T — Google review
We had the lamb and stew and both were pretty amazing after a long day. One thing I couldn't quite understand was that the staff were content to say the restaurant with full without encouraging people to queue. Just ask how long the wait is you'll be settled.

Estepa Resto Bar is a vibrant spot located at the corner of Cerro Solo and Antonio Rojo, offering creative food and cool music. The restaurant serves superb dishes like lamb in soft mint sauce, pizzas, and pumpkin sorrentinos. Additionally, it's conveniently close to La Tapera for more Argentinean cuisine. Guests can also enjoy takeout options with tasty empanadas and milanesa.
At Estepa Resto Bar, you're in for a treat with these hearty Argentine dishes. The Pastel de Papas con Cordero is a rich, comforting shepherd's pie made with tender meat, topped with a golden, cheesy mashed potato crust. The fresh cherry tomatoes and sprig of parsley on top add a bright contrast to the savory, creamy layers beneath. Next up are their signature empanadas, perfectly baked with a golden, crispy crust. They come with a side of tangy, spiced salsa for dipping. The empanadas are filled with traditional ingredients, offering a satisfying balance of flavors, from rich meats to savory cheeses and vegetables. Both dishes capture the essence of Patagonian cuisine, hearty and full of flavor.

I had an amazing dinner at The Estepa Restaurant Bar last night! It was a great place for spending time with friends after long day hiking or activities. The server was attentive and made great recommendations from the menu. While the wait time was a little longer than expected, but the staff kept us informed, and offered more tasty pans and toasts for us. Surprisingly, not only the food quality was great, but also the services were friendly and generously! From the overall experience. I’ll definitely tell everyone coming to El Chalton and highly recommend it. A great experience!

We can’t say enough good things about our experience at Estapas in El Chaltén. Despite it being almost 11 PM, the Christian greeted us with a warm smile and went out of their way to ensure we were served with exceptional care. The customer service was truly remarkable—kind, attentive, and heartfelt. As for the food, it was absolutely outstanding. The salmon was cooked to perfection with flavors that delighted our taste buds, and the ribeye was incredibly tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Each dish reflected the passion and skill of the team. Estapas is a true gem, combining top-notch food, exceptional hospitality, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a must-visit for anyone in El Chaltén. Highly recommend!

We just went for drinks during happy hour. Nice place and good service. We were inside but the outside area looked tempting, just needed a less windy day, haha good luck with that. Good beer selection, but only taps: rubia and IPA included for happy hour. We loved the music here and stayed for a few.
Robert Q — Google review
Guanaco empanadas roasted in a brick oven, ribeye steaks grilled to perfection, the best chimichuri in town, and a delicious wine selection.
Rich B — Google review
The staff are lovely but the food is disappointing for the price. We ordered the steak which was tough (the cauliflower purée was delicious though). The lamb stew was decent but sadly the fish was inedible, almost off and the pasta was so chewy. It has the potential to be great but does too many dishes and it’s a shame.

Great and good priced place in the center of El Chaltén. Several vegetarian options on the menu, the carrot and aubergine pizza was really good. And huge! One pizza is good for many, or as lunch the following day. Good value for money. Love music in the evening!

Parrilla La Oveja Negra is a cozy restaurant in El Chalten, Argentina, offering a delightful dining experience. The place is constructed entirely of wood with large windows that provide stunning mountain views. It's an excellent choice for those craving Patagonian grilled lamb or cross-roasted lamb. The menu also includes red and white meats complemented by craft beers from Patagonia and a selection of national and international wines.
Best meal so far. The lamb was excellent, the beef tenderloin was perfectly cooked and very tender. Beet and provolone side dish was so good. Sweet potatoes were just okay. Great wine selection. Good service as well.
Robert Q — Google review
We arrived early and we're seating with no one at adjoining tables. When the food arrived, so did about a dozen flies. Mentioned it to our waiter and he covered our steaks with a napkin to keep them off. They were still buzzing around. Definitely detracted from the ambiance...don't.expect flies at a high quality restaurant. Once we had eaten most of our meal, and the restaurant filled, the flies disappeared, likely to visit other patrons. We had beef tenderloin for two. The sizes and cooks varied on the 4 pieces. We ordered medium rare, but a thick piece was rare. The tenderloin was a little on the tough side, not almost melt in your tender. The service was friendly. The casual ambiance was a plus. As an example, the wine list was a visit to their wine cabinet with prices displayed and pick your own bottle.
Doug D — Google review
Warm and cozy restaurant that is a little on the pricey side but delicious. We got the mashed pumpkin with honey which was rather sweet but cravable. The beets with goat cheese were cooked perfectly, slightly firm with the skin left on for a little texture. Pumpkin ravioli with a creamy cheese sauce held a great balance between sweet and savory. We got two ribeyes one asked to be cooked medium and the other medium rare. The medium rare steak was rather rare for me so, I asked them to throw it back on the grill for me and it was still juicy. The server recommended a bottle of wine for us that wasn't expensive and paired perfectly with our meal. fantastic service! Highly recommend this restaurant!

Great food and atmosphere. Service was very attentive. The portions were indeed huge and we were stuffed despite only ordering 2 dishes (lamb and provolone). Very generous with the house wine which was pretty good too! Excellent place to dine at after a long day of hiking.

Went here twice when I was in El Chalten a week ago. The food is excellent and the steaks are well cooked. The beef is highly recommended and you do get a taste of it being grilled. The house wine is well suited for the flavour profile of the steaks. Treat yourself after a busy day hiking! It's well worth it

The lamb here was awesome! Great sides as well, we got the lamb for 2 and 3 sides and that was more than enough for 3 people. There was also live music from a local group, which was nice!

Friendly and quick service. Everything on the menu is excellent. We had the famous lamb à la parilla with a little chimichurri on the side. We don’t normally eat red meat, but everybody said it was so good and we were not deceived! Definitely a must try when in El Chalten.

Day 2

Keep it simple
For day 2, these 3 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in El Chalten. Start the day with Reserva Laguna Nimez and make your way through the city to get to Loma Del Pliegue Tumbado. This should take about 9 hours of your day.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Reserva Laguna Nimez is a peaceful natural reserve located near downtown El Calafate, offering a sanctuary for various indigenous bird species. The area is marshy and sits on the shore of Lago Argentino, providing a home to birds like flamingos, swans, ibises, and lapwings. Despite threats from nearby construction and urban expansion, it remains a haven for bird-watchers and offers a relaxing stroll amidst grazing horses and flocks of birds.
We visited the Reserva Laguna Nimez during our stay in El Calafate, and it was a lovely experience. The visit takes about one to one and a half hours at a relaxed pace, following a peaceful trail that loops around the lagoon. The entrance fee is 12,000 ARS per person, which feels fair considering the beauty of the place and the tranquility it offers. You can see a wide variety of birds, including flamingos, ducks, and many local species, it’s a real paradise for bird lovers and photographers. The landscape is stunning, with views of the lagoon, the steppe, and the Andes in the background. The paths are easy to walk and well maintained, making it accessible for most visitors. It’s a perfect stop if you want to enjoy nature, take a break from the busy town, and experience a different side of Patagonia. Bring a camera and take your time, it’s well worth it!

I am a big nature fan and so when I had a few hours to kill while in town, I decided to come over here and check it out. The reserve is taken care of very nicely and there is a lot of birdlife to view. The price was a little steep, if I recall about the equivalent of $10, but I suppose that is also to help out the refuge since it is privately run. If you have the time, this is a nice stop while in town, but I would not go out of my way to visit either.
Michael Y — Google review
We had a lovely stroll around the reserve. It was quite windy and I was a tad underdressed, so we rushed it a bit. But it was beautiful. We had drinks at a cool cafe/bar afterwards! Across the street.
Shannon S — Google review
The Laguna itself was great with great wildlife visible for us. However, what really made me sad is that I saw two white horses in really bad condition tied up outside of the Laguna for several days in a row without appropriate feed or water. As a place preserving wildlife providing good care of local animals should be a no-brainer. Otherwise a beautiful place.
Angela-Sophia G — Google review
It is walking distance from downtown El Calafate. What you can see is purely depended by weather. The weather was okay when I started, but soon I encountered unexpected rain and snow, so I did not see much at all except goose everywhere and flamingo at distance, bird observation stations did not help either.
Zemin H — Google review
What a beautiful place! We spent 1½-2h there. It's "just" a beautiful path through through this little nature reserve with some information signs. But there are so many birds and you can observe them from the path or some observations stands and little refugios. Winds are strong there, beware! The lady at the entrance was nice and explained as a lot. There is also a toilet in the entrence building. Absolutely worth the entry fee.
Igor S — Google review
Nimes Lagoon, an important bird watching centre in El Calafate, 25 minute walk. We saw Upland Geese, black-faced ibis with their long curly like beaks, Southern Lapwing, flamingos and many others. From the reserve you could also walk down to the shore of Lake Argentino. We did this. On the shore we found a Lapwing nest with four eggs in it guarded by two Lapwings, we thought the nest was dangerously exposed to predators and peoples’ dogs that were out on the beach.
Frans C — Google review
Beautiful nature walk through a peaceful bird sanctuary. Give yourself about 1-1/2 hours to fully enjoy the loop that takes you on a path through rolling fields to Lago Argentino for exquisite viewing of the birdlife.

El Chaltén Viewpoint (City & Fitz Roy)

4.7

Scenic spot
El Chaltén Viewpoint, also known as Fitz Roy Viewpoint, offers a stunning alternative for those not willing to trek the full 14 miles to Laguna de los Tres. The trail is within private land and while it's recommended by locals, it's not endorsed by park rangers or shown on tourist maps. The narrow and steep path of about 3 km leads to exceptional views where the wind can be quite strong.
Decent hike but went all the way around and did not think I need shoes or anything. It was still good but the ascent and decent are much more than you would think. Great view of the city and when I went there was a huge wind that would almost blow you away.

Go only if you have spare time to spend and if you hv done the mirador los condores hike. This is free but the hike is much tougher with steep ascent and descent. Hiking shoes required definitely. I guess there's a reason why it's free. You get a view of el chalten as well. Google map will ask you to cross a river but that's not the way. Look for the metal bridge along the river, cross it and hike to yr right. There is only 1 path.

(Translated by Google) Trail within private land. The locals recommend it but the park rangers do not and it does not appear on tourist maps. You skirt the town at its limit against the Río de las Vueltas. You will find a parking-type esplanade next to a large bridge. Cross the bridge and take the path to the right. It is very narrow and very very steep. Supposedly it is about 3 km. Upstairs the view is exceptional. The wind snatches away anything you have in your hand. Tel, glasses, everything. So be careful. Loma Del Pliegue Tumbado is a lesser-known trail in Parque de los Glaciares, offering a moderate 13-mile round trip with a 3,500-foot elevation gain. The trek provides an escape from crowds and diverse terrain with stunning views of the national park and beyond. The geological fault along the trail showcases fossils from millions of years ago.
Amazing hike! We did it in 7 hours including taking pictures and rest! We went to both the viewpoints! And the 2nd one and the higher one is definitely worth hiking up for!
Charlie C — Google review
Nice hike! Not too hard, although the views are pretty much the same the whole trip. Once you finish the track there's a nice view. But if you week walking towards right you migh find a big group of boulders and rocks, and there, there's an even better view to the river and Cerro Torre.
Francisco F — Google review
Out of the three main trails (Torre, fitz roy, tumbado), it is very close to the fitz roy in difficulty. So it's like the second hardest but not by much. There are two Miradors and the top. The higher one requires 30-60min extra steep hill but gives a 360° view of the area. Definitely worth it. Lot of people warn about the wind, maybe I got lucky on the weather but it really wasn't that bad. A small windbreaker was enough. No need for big boots or sticks either. Watch out for the cows tho, I accidentally got too close to a baby and mama wasn't happy. Tried charging me. Would not recommend.

THE MOST AMAZING PLACE IN CHALTEN. For me this was the most beautiful location, you get to see Fitz Roy, laguna torre and the glaciar at once and is not that hard. I highly recommend doing this one. And is not as crowded as Laguna de los tres
Sebastian G — Google review
Amazing view of Cerro torre if weather permits. When there is cloud coverage you always get an amazing view of Lago Viedma , Cerro Huemul and Cerro solo. Don't sleep on this hike.
Ben S — Google review
Most definitely one of the best views from El Chalten. This trail is about 3700 feet up and over 5 miles long. I didn't quite go to the very top, but you don't have to for the best views in my opinion. Even though it was terrible weather on the way up, the clouds began to break and the sun shown through just before sunset. You never know what the weather in patagonia will be so bring lots of layers. All in all it took about four hours round trip with an extra hour or so at the top. Probably the best, accessible but not easy, view in the this part of the park! You can see Cerro Torre (hidden in clouds), Laguna Torre (center with the campground below it in the greener trees), and Mount Fitz Roy (breaking from the clouds on the right).
Jesse ( — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous, and worth the 12 mile (round trip) hike. The end of the hike does climb a steep wall in order to get the best views, and probably takes a certain level of fitness. Highly recommend. The views are great throughout and the change in terrain is entertaining, especially coming out of the forested area... You'll see what I mean!

The knowledgeable and bilingual staff are available to provide expert recommendations. This was my favorite restaurant on my entire 10 day trip to Argentina. It had it all! A beautiful restaurant with an elegant setting in a good location. The staff was absolutely fantastic! The bar area was nice and the bar tender was very friendly. The kitchen was open, clean and organized. Our waiter was very friendly and tentative. We shared a mixed meat grill as well as some local trout. The food was prepared perfectly and the meats were absolutely amazing. I could eat there every day! The wine selection looked stunning, only wish I drank wine. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Save this place for your last night of dinner in El Chalten! I made a last minute reservation. Arrived to a full restaurant at 830pm and was seated at the bar which I didn't really like. Managed to sit at a proper table after a while when people started leaving. I ordered a golden lager, petite ribeye steak (medium rare according to their level) and a baked stuffed potato with cream cheese and green onions. The steak came out perfectly and went really well with the chimichurri and criolla sauces. I also asked for additional bbq sauce to try. The petite portion is definitely enough for 1 so do not over order. The bread basket was also great with the butter and black bean dip. Prices are reasonable for such quality steaks. It was a rainy evening so there was a period where it was quiet with just a few tables but im sure it would be very busy on normal days. Reservations recommended! Service from the male server on 16 Mar dinner was good.

I loved everything about this restaurant! Great food, delicious cocktails, very friendly staff, amazing dessert (affogato), and a surprise warm mulled wine to finish off the meal. My experience at this restaurant was very disappointing. The dish I ordered was not tasty at all, and when I asked to have it replaced, the waitress refused and said I would have to buy a new one. On top of that, the portion was very small and definitely not worth the price. I’m not a picky person, but the food was honestly terrible and should never have been served. It’s a shame that this is the level of service here. I definitely do not recommend this place
Noam S — Google review
Wow, the best steak I’ve ever had in my entire life (and I’ve had a lot). I couldn’t recommend this place more for its steak, the atmosphere and service. It so good we had to come twice. The chimichurri was fantastic so with the chips and so was the wine. Reasonably priced two huge steak and bottle of wine came to £43 including service. We wish we had space for desserts because they looked incredible. If you’re in El Chalten and love steak you have to eat here.

Just ate at the restaurant. Decent food but the milkshake was not good at all. We enjoyed looking at the old photos on the wall. Agree with other reviews that this seems like a once-great spot now past its prime. Worth a visit though if other, better places have long waits.

The hours on google may not be correct. We were in El Chalten for 4 days and this place was only open on one of those days. So if it looks closed, just wait a few days and they may open up. We each ordered half a pizza. Flavour was good, but dough was not the best. We also ate at laborum pizza and for comparison I would say this pizza is less greasy and cheesy (which I personally prefer as Laborum was too greasy and cheesy but if greasy and cheesy is your thing you will probably prefer laborum) however, dough wise I preferred laborum. Taste of ingredients I would say they are en par. This place has ample seating.

Patagonia Hikes is a popular destination for hikers and climbers in El Chalten, at the heart of Patagonia. The area offers stunning natural beauty, with Mount Fitz Roy hike being one of the most beautiful in Argentina. Despite its popularity, it can get crowded during peak season. Visitors can rent high-quality camping and climbing equipment from Patagonia Hikes, making it convenient for those looking to explore the region's national parks and mountain trails.
Had great experience renting gear from Patagonia Hikes. The quality of equipment was better than what we saw at some of the other places in town but the prices everywhere were all basically the same. The rental and return process was super smooth.
Ekaterina A — Google review
The negative (which is not really a negative) first. Yea, you're supposed to turn in an ID (but it doesn't have to be your passport). It's not really that uncommon here. And yes, equipment is a bit more expensive but show me a shop that isn't around here. I loved the shop and the personnel. Everything was fair. Furthermore (presumably) the shop owner has a lot of experience in the mountains and knows his stuff. He gave me advice and showed me his pictures on a not so common trip and that was totally for free. I got the equipment I needed for the tour and was very happy I could finish the hike and climb. Sure, in other places you'll find rentals with newer equipment but not so much here I think. I say thank you to Patagonia Hikes. Best rental in El Chalten. :-) visited March 2025

We had a great experience hiring hiking gear (tent, sleeping bags and mats, stove) from Patagonia Hikes. Prices were clear (there's a printed list on the counter) and reasonable. They also threw in some half full gas canisters for us so we didn't have to buy one for only one night. They asked us to check the gear before leaving and it was all in good condition, except the mats which were a bit worn but the sleeping bags were so comfortable and warm it didn't matter! The team were helpful and friendly and the return process was smooth. Just wanted to add our experience as I see other reviews are quite mixed.

I rented a sleeping bag here (0- -5c), no odor but was cold whole night in poincenot (mid April). Either the temp went below 0 or wrong recommendation(it seems the 0- -5c is 0 at limit and -5 max at survival, the comfort temp might be +3/5c). Staff was friendly, but they it is require to keep your ID doc/ usd till you return the item
Mart P — Google review
The guy in the shop was super friendly but the gear we hired was all broken. None of the zips worked, so the tents weren't watertight. One of the sleeping bags wouldn't zip up. Fine if it's sunny but if it's wet and cold the gear isn't good enough. When we asked for a discount for having to return a day early they said we should have got in the sleeping bag in the shop to check it worked...
Alex M — Google review
Rented tent/2x sleeping bags/2x mats for ~£16 a night and a rucksack for ~£4 a day (paying by cash). Solid tent with no issues, we had a great time camping 2 nights with it! Friendly staff and only required driving licence as deposit rather than hundreds of dollars as other places had asked us for. Would definitely recommend!!!
Ed M — Google review
One of only two shops in El Chalten who offer rental tents. We rented some camping equipment last minute in peak season with no issue with availability. Staff were very friendly and allowed us to collect the night before without charging for an additional night. Recommend to thoroughly check the equipment before hiring, both zippers on the tent we hired were not functional which led to a cold nights sleep. In addition, the stove ignition was also broken. Thankfully we were able to ask for help from fellow campers on this occasion (luckily!). When we mentioned these issues to the shop on return, we were told the safety of the equipment is our responsibility, not theirs, and we were not offered a discount when asked. The shop did not seem too bothered by this and prepared the broken tent for the next rental. Cannot comment on all the rental equipment but just check what you rent before leaving the shop. Otherwise a great shop with well priced stock.

Gluten-free restaurant
Cúrcuma is a warm space located just a few meters from the main street but in a quiet passage to enjoy food inside or outside with views of the hills. The dishes are well elaborated and have very striking presentations along with beautiful designs on the tableware. Visitors can expect joyful and friendly staff, large portion sizes, and delicious vegan options such as veggie pizza with cashew cheese.
Really lovely vegan and gluten free restaurant. Ate here twice and had the pizza and risotto, both were delicious and friendly staff with good service. Not the cheapest but nothing in Argentina is so definitely worth it for the quality of the food and is the same price that you will pay anywhere else in El Chalten.

We recently had a dinner at Cúrcum. The food was really really good, with a great variety of options to choose from. We appreciated a lot The pumpkin risotto 🎃😊 The atmosphere of the restaurant is modern and cozy.Highly recommended!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Cúrcuma, a fantastic vegan restaurant that truly exceeded my expectations. The service was exceptional, with friendly and attentive staff who made sure we had everything we needed. The food was outstanding, with a great variety of options to choose from. We enjoyed delicious wraps packed with fresh vegetables, a flavorful vegan pizza, and a burger meal with rice and potatoes that was cooked to perfection. The smoothies were also a hit, made with fresh fruit and blended to perfection. The atmosphere of the restaurant was modern and cozy, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a great meal. Whether you're a vegan or just looking for a delicious and satisfying meal, Cúrcuma is a must-visit! Highly recommended!

The only place in town that has real smoothies. Be prepare to wait an hour or more for your food. This would be a good place to hang out for a slow rest day when you’re not in a rush. Not ideal if you want to grab a quick bite before hiking or driving. The kitchen technically only opens at 11 even though the restaurant itself opens before that. I came in at 10:30 and waited 2 hours for my food. The pizza was good, but was slightly burnt. The appetizer dip was great. They also do blue dollar exchange.

We spent 3 nights in El Chaltén city and ate here 4 times! Food is amazing - Loved everything we tried. Got the eggplant and dragon pizza x2 but also loved the pumpkin risotto
Adam L — Google review
This place is vegan to the core, but I enjoyed it. The decor feels vegan, the food is vegan and maybe organic, and the friendly staff feel in tune with the place. We stared with a starter on the house, carot with lentil humus. I enjoyed the carrot, and my wife enjoyed the humus. For the main course, we shared a pumpkin soup and a rissito with a mix of vegetables. Both with coco milk. Enjoyed both dishes, both rich and creamy, with a lot of different flavours. To complete the meal, we had a juice drink with a touch of maca, whatever it is It's not cheap but all in all, it is very enjoyable

Went here 2x in 3 days. Great food, good smoothies, and thin lattes at upper end prices for a US casual restaurant with a cozy cafe vibe. I was pleased to know they grew some of their own veg. the owner was kind. the space was cute, and the service kind. You are captive in a mountain town so expect those prices, but we left full and happy splitting the wrap, green smoothie, and turmeric latte. This is a classic vegan/GF restro, so bring those expectations. Make your lady happy and take her here, your bodies will thank you for freshies.

I cannot say enough good things about Cúrcuma, this place was my saviour food-wise as I have celiac disease and it is not easy to find suitable food. They are 100% gluten-free (sin TACC), plant-based and it's also absolutely delicious. I had dinner here 4 nights in a row, and we also ordered lunch packs for our hikes to take away the night before. The owner and all the staff were super nice and it was very cozy for sitting. No doubt I would not have had such an amazing time in El Chalten if it hadn't been for this amazing place!

The restaurant La Senyera Cocina Argentina serves amazing Argentinean dishes with a lovely homely atmosphere. The food is delicious and hearty, perfect after a long trek, and the service is attentive without being overbearing. It's an ideal place to eat out in El Chalten.
Delicious local food in a cozy casual family-run restaurant, where one feels very welcomed. Fresh salads, guanaco goulash, steak tenderloin, and pumpkin soup were all scrumptious. And not to forget the raspberry semifreddo dessert, which was light and refreshing.

Good place to get traditional food. They also have coffee, dessert and wine options. Traditional and cozy vibe inside plus very kind staff. Food is just the right price for El Chalten. Love their carrot juice!

Very good prices, great traditional food, excellent service, we couldn’t be happier with our meal here

A cosy restaurant with vibes of home cooking. The exterior attracted me but the food and service enchanted me. Some restaurants often reminded you that the bill excluded service charge to hint for tips but no such pretensions here despite the warm service.

Felt like eating a home made dish. Not salty at all and delicious. Service was great and very friendly. We even took the leftover meal home.

Really delicious empanadas and stews here! The wine was the best we've tried in Argentina so far. Would definitely recommend!!
Flo H — Google review
"La Senyera" is a family-managed and very traditional place to eat in El Chálten, that is located in an old sheep Shearing barn from the 1900's. We tried to visit it a couple of years ago on Autumn, but it wasn't open (I don't know if they actually open at low seasons), but we were luckier this last Spring, after some days trying, to be finally able to visit it (the opening hours are a little confuse, especially for those who are out on trails most of the day). The place itself have a simple decoration, and a cordial service, just a bit on the slow side (maybe because the house was almost full). They have a very extensive menu with very good prices: it includes a quite good variety of dishes between vegetarian (mains, salads and burgers), many types of empanadas, meats and traditional Argentine dishes, stews and desserts among other things. You get as a free starter a basket of delicious warm homemade bread with a garlic paste. We decided to order a Saffron with Chicken Risotto and a Carbonada (traditional stew with beef, corn, pumpkin, peaches, carrots, sweet potatoes, rice and vegetables), that arrived quickly, in around 15 min. Both were good, with a nice size and a simple presentation, more comfort-food like - but both lacked a little seasoning (salt). For dessert we ordered the traditional Martin Fierro (sweet potato preserve with cheese slices) and a Pastellito (pie of quince preserve, in our case); both were very good with an exotic flavor (to those that aren't used to regional desserts). We wished to try other regional dishes but we weren't so hungry at the day. Overall, it is a nice place to visit, if you manage to see it open and with vacant places to seat, especially if you look for some comfort-food dishes with lots of vegetarian or local cuisine choices, beside some unusual desserts that are different from what most of the places serve in the city. The prices are very good and the portions are also good - we paid at the time, with beverages included something around 15-20US$ (they don't charge service).

My best experience in El Chalten. A very cozy restaurant, typical mountain decor with great music. Traditional food, with lamb, locro, carbonada, soups, empanadas... It taste as homemade food. And the price for food and drinks are amazing!!! I really recommend.

This Chalten restaurant is situated in the city centre and offers a comfortable interior and free seating on the patio if the wind allows it. The menu features local dishes such as lentil soup and chicken milanese, both perfect for after a walk around Fitz Roy.
We had the lamb empanadas and the ham and red pepper pizza and both were delicious. Our server Donte was very friendly, helpful and provided us with some local knowledge of the trails. The atmosphere was fun with great music.

We had lamb stew and fried steak. The portion was quite large, taste was ok. Staff were super nice and friendly. It opens whole afternoon, super convenient

Went at peak dinner time and waited quite a while. There isn't really an orderly q system so you hv to remember yr spot in the q. Wasn't feeling too well so ordered the lamb empanadas which and also the lentil stew with red chorizo which were both good. The lentil is good for 2 to share and is the perfect hot dish. It was too much for 1 as there is also the bread that comes before that. Go early if you can to avoid waiting.
Kelvin H — Google review
I had the chicken and potatoes and my dad had the lamb and rice. Both were very tasty. Staff were super friendly. Only complaint was that my dad’s lamb was bone in and had a small portion of meat on the bone.
Brittany M — Google review
Good value, reasonably priced, filling, lovely staff, fun atmosphere. My husband was after a regular ‘pub meal’ (we are Australian) that wasn’t just steak, pizza or a burger at a huge price. The range of schnitzels here made it the obvious choice. Chicken schnitzel was huge. I had the trout sorrentinos with pink which was a generous serving and super tasty.
Rachael F — Google review
Not recommended. Had a pizza there, the waiter charge us tips without even asking … find that super rude.
Matthew — Google review
Definitely a place where you get the most value out of what you pay for. The portion sizes are huge and the food is delicious. The place is usually packed so be prepared to wait but it’s well worth it. Would recommend one of their chicken dishes but they do have quite a few options to choose from. Looking forward to going back soon!

The Chocolatería Josh Aike is a cozy wooden refuge that may look like someone's house at first glance, but in reality, it is Josh's place. They offer delicious hot chocolates made with real melted chocolate, as well as other hot drinks to enjoy in a charming and rustic atmosphere.
This was such a hidden gem for us! Pictures don't do justice to their warm and cozy chocolateria. The hot chocolate was delicious and the sweet treats paired perfectly. The staff were so friendly and kind, highly highly recommend!
Jyoti M — Google review
A lovely Chocolateria with genuine spirit! We came back several times to see if 5 people could be seated, because there is limited seating and the chocolate there is highly recommended! But we got our spot and tasted the amazing brownie and hot chocolate! I’d say, this is a must see in El Chalten. Especially when coming back from a rainy day hike. The staff is very friendly. And the chocolate was amazing! ☕️🍫✨
Barbora N — Google review
This place was amazing - the dulce le che alfajores (the dark square ones) are the best we’ve had so far and the hot chocolate is foamy and not too sweet. Space is warm and cozy with a large shared table on the second floor. On a sunny day, the large window on the second floor has the best view of the mountains from the village. Go visit and buy some alfajores for the road!
Cara G — Google review
The perfect place to warm up with a hot chocolate after a hike or on a rainy day! It's a slightly thicker and less sweet hot chocolate, which is exactly how I like it. I also got an alfajor, and it was better than the ones I'd had in Buenos Aires.
Caroline A — Google review
Nice cozy place, worth stopping by. It doesn't have many spaces to sit so you have to time it right. Hot chocolate was decent but not very rich (had to sacrifice some of the chocolates to make it as such). Service is a bit slow.
Petr V — Google review
Nice, cozy place with unusual decor. Their signature and most popular cake seems to be brownie, which has a layer of dulce de leche and dark chocolate on top. It complements nicely their hot chocolate that, luckily, is not overly sweet like in many places - one can always add sugar if one so desires. Alfajores and chocolates are also available for purchase.
Christopher W — Google review
I really like this place. Staff were kind. I had the best alfajores here (triple chocolate Dulce de leche) , a bit expensive but it was amazing and worth it. Hot chocolate was very rich in coco and sugar served separately. I hope to comeback here next time. Thank you!
Mart P — Google review
Had a great hot chocolate here. Loved the vibe if this place: super cosy, warm, and friendly staff. The building is adorable and there is a great collection of old climbing gear decorating the place. The chocolate was a tad pricey so we didn't try any, but there was a great selection and it all looked amazing

"The Asadores" is a top dining experience in El Chalten, offering a 5-course fixed menu that provides great value for the price. The restaurant features authentic Argentinian dishes, including sizzling steaks cooked on a wood-fired stove. Guests can enjoy Patagonian red wine with their meal, although it's noted that the local wines may not be as complex as those from other regions of Argentina.
Please just go here. The steak is the best i have ever had in my life and I have travelled all over the world. Service was exceptional. Edit: we came back a second time and it was BETTER than the first time (not sure how this was possible because the first time was phenomenal). Guillermo and his staff are exceptional; so kind and attentive - the best restaurant in El Chalten.

This is definitely a restaurant for (American) tourists. Service here is outstanding but the food was just okay, and you will pay a premium compared to other restaurants. The pros: The portions on the prix fixe were generous. The vegetarian dishes were creative and flavorful (more so than the carnivorous plates). The salad course was surprisingly delicious — blackened sesame seeds were *chef’s kiss*. The dessert was also outstanding! The service is 10/10. They give you free water (a very American trait, haha). The cons: The steak was underseasoned and a bit dry. Passable, but I’ve had much better in other parts of the country at a fraction of the price. Just about everything we ate was good — but missing some element of flavor that would push it from good to great (which is what I would hope for at this price point). It is expensive compared to other options. Feels a bit like a tourist trap — lots of English spoken here. We enjoyed our experience on the whole, and if you’re looking to treat yourself after a long day of hiking, this might fit the bill.
Camille B — Google review
When in Argentina you really got to go for the asados because that is the heart of the cuisine. Asadores was a fantastic place, one of the owners man the grill while the other goes around to check on customers. If you're not particular about the doneness, its ok for you bcos we ordered the medium rare but it came a little overdone. Hence the 4 stars. Overall we would still recommend it for its interior, the grill and the meat of course. Go with an appetite and treat yourself after a day of hiking.
Ling H — Google review
This restaurant offers a very intimate setting, with a max capacity of about 22 people. While we were there there was a party of 8-10 locals celebrating and then smaller tables of 2 and 4 made up of locals and outdoor enthusiast tourists like us. We enjoyed our pre-fix meal immensely! The vegetarian loved her meal as much as us omnivores and they easily accommodated my allergies. The owners navigated the power outage expertly. One of the partners came out to talk to us about the restaurant and the food. This experience was a highlight of our trip! Definitely contact the restaurant ahead of time to ensure you can get a reservation.
Shyla T — Google review
The food, the service, and the atmosphere was absolutely incredible ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ To pull off a 5 course vegan meal is no easy feat, especially when you factor in the meat heavy Argentinian culture. We showed up with your our two toddlers and all four of us left content and happy. Not to mention the quality live music sesh. Even if you do not follow a plant based diet you should give the vegan taster menu a shot!
Nishant N — Google review
What a treat after a long day of hiking! They have a fixed menu (65k ARS pp for 5 courses), meat or vegetarian. Very large portions, selection of various meats and freshly made. The restaurant was very busy so we made a reservation for later in the evening. Staff were very friendly and spoke good English. Yes it seems more expensive, but actually when you compare to the price of getting a couple of dishes at neighbouring restaurants it’s much better value for money.
Dani D — Google review
I cannot say enough how amazing our experience was and how delicious the food is. The servers are very attentive, explain the menu and options we'll. The food is AMAZING (veggie and meat options). We were also honored to watch a local band perform during dinner.
Melissa M — Google review
I would recommend this restaurant to anybody coming to El Chalten. After an incredible day of hiking my husband made a reservation (on WhatsApp) to eat here. The food, service and experience were incredible. I would say this was the best fine dining experience I’ve had (I live in Seattle, USA). The vegetables and meat were high quality and so fresh. What made the experience so special was the service. William, the owner, is so kind and genuine. He talked to us, served tables and even filled water glasses. He is such a good leader. I would also like to recognize Hipo, our server, who was so attentive and made our night so special. Do yourself a favor and share a meal here, it is a great experience. We didn’t get the names of the other servers but everyone, including the chefs were incredible. From the empanada, the plate of meat, the salad and the dessert, everything was spectacular. You won’t find a restaurant like this anywhere else. I can’t recommend not only the food but the service enough. Take your time here and enjoy.
