Lukmaan Restaurant is a popular local spot in Stone Town, known for its delicious and affordable Zanzibari and Indian cuisine. The restaurant offers a variety of local dishes like grilled seafood and biryani, with the option to choose from ready-made or made-to-order meals. Despite being busy, it's favored by both locals and tourists. Located near the former slave market on Mkunazini Street, this bustling eatery is recommended by residents for its cafeteria-style lunches and dinners.
This is your must go place to eat local Zanzibar cuisines at a really budget price. Great staff who can manage to communicate understandable English. This makes it comfortable for tourists to explore local foods. Has all those food in the pictures and just paid 32000 tsh which is amazing price compared to other restaurants and offered way better quality food.
Ashita S — Google review
We stopped by for an early dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the extensive selection of food. The restaurant was quite busy. Our server was quick to present the available options and had a good command of English. We chose to take our meal to go rather than eat in. Once we made our choices, the food was packed up swiftly. The flavors were excellent, although I would have liked it to be a touch spicier. In summary, I highly recommend this place.
{CJ} J — Google review
The food is good and clean. We came during peak hour and were served pretty fast. Only the portions of fish, especially the Jumbo prawn is not enough (only 1 shrimp - which I think is little for the price) but the rice portions are great The juices are good. I believe they should add ice in them to make them more fresh! The service is good only I would recommend having a bill printed out, cause counting with a calculator can lead to mistakes both from the clients & the management. Would come back! :) (they have free wifi)

This restaurant is not what it used to be. I have been coming here with groups for many years. Today I was here with 17 people. It took about two hours for most of the orders to arrive, but two of my guests had to wait even longer. The portions have become smaller. The waiters did their best and were friendly, but they cannot compensate for the wrong concept of the restaurant. Some dishes still taste good, but overall satisfaction is much lower than in the past. We received no compensation. It’s a pity — I am now looking for alternatives for my groups.
László S — Google review
Nice! Although it was our first day and we haven’t tried many local dishes, we like what we have eaten. Food was clean and tasty and we do recommend here for customers searching to try something local. They have good amount of options in their menu including vegetarian. The atmosphere was nice, it is one of the nicest buildings around this area. We recommend you to not waste you time by waiting in the line to order. Waiters are all around and their menu includes prices. Rose was helping us during our visit and she was kind and attentive. Although the restaurant being busy at the period we have visited, the service was really fast.
Ece T — Google review
Lukmaan is one of the best local restaurants. A wide selection of local specialties, fresh seafood, and freshly squeezed smoothies. The meat is grilled on-site, and they also serve shawarma. The waiters and staff are very friendly. They're very happy when you come often and regularly. And they know you by name. I was there almost every day for the two weeks I was there. I'll definitely be back. Many greetings to Zahura, Mohsen, and his brother. See you next time :)
Muhsin C — Google review
We went there on our last day in Stone Town with our guide and the food was very good and quickly made. It like some cantina and you can see chefs cooking. They offer a lot of different mostly traditional food. The waiter was very helpfull and he show us every item that they have so we could decide easier. They have a nice terace and a lot of people, also a lot of turists and also some cats that are waiting for your food haha. Everything was good but for some reason more expenisve then we tought.

It offers a diverse array of products including flavored tea, organic soaps, and an assortment of local spices such as cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg that are cultivated on the island. Additionally, visitors can find locally made items like essential oils and traditional handicrafts.
The local market is a the best place to get affordable fruits and spices. Although you might want to stay away from purchasing any meats there. It’s very busy and you’ll find few tourists there. Bought some fresh giant avocados and 🫚

The tour of the spice farm was incredible! We saw someone climbing up the coconut tree, and it was so wholesome. Lunch cooked with the spices from the farm was really delicious 😋 I would go back for that lunch!

Lovely place to discover more about food especially spices and fruits. Cloves, ginger, turmeric, black and white pepper, nutmeg, lychee were some of the spices.on the farm. Coconuts, oranges, bananas, water melon, pineapple, star fruit and many others were grown. It was a food learning experience. Staff were friendly and our guide was very knowledgeable. Good outing.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Zanzibar Spice Community Shop is a vibrant spice market where the air is filled with the aromas of vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, and turmeric. It is a place of pure authenticity – colorful stalls, smiling vendors, and stories hidden in every spice. Experiences like these inspired us to create our book The Magic of Zanzibar, later continued in The Call of the Savannah. Visiting this market is not just about shopping – it is about touching the soul of the island, a memory that will stay with you forever.”

Zanzibar Coffee House is a stylish hotel housed in a 19th-century building, offering individually decorated rooms, a cafe, and a terrace. Located in the heart of Zanzibar, it provides an authentic experience for those wanting to live among the locals. The area near the market offers an elegantly low-key atmosphere and great value. The hotel's central location allows guests to immerse themselves in the vibrant surroundings filled with shops, apartments, mosques, and temples.
Awesome (too) short stay at this wonderful place. I booked the Arabica suite and was amazed by all the small details in the room. Lovely and attentive staff, excellent coffee and breakfadt, just a minute from the market and the other sights in Stone Town.
Solveig — Google review
Lovely coffeehouse with a great view. You can sit downstairs in a cozy atmosphere or go upstairs for a beautiful city view. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We tried carrot cake, and iced latte. The iced latte is more like coffee with cold milk than the proper ice latte, but overall it was a nice experience, especially for the view.
Liza R — Google review
Interesting, but typical Zanzibar interior; there is practically no choice of coffee, just a pre-blended mix of Arabica and Robusta.врождённое. Very strong coffee. It's surprising that a company that has its own production of finished products cannot pay attention to customers, show respect and make a choice of coffee.
Juri R — Google review
Highly recommend the spice coffee and vanilla latte. Extremely cool rooftop seating area, get a number from the counter, take it upstairs, you get a recite there and take it downstairs to pay. Very unique experience 👌🏽

We stayed here at the beginning of our Zanzibar trip for two nights and were so sad to leave! From the moment we arrived, we were introduced to the lovely staff and a welcome drink who made us feel at home and get our bearings. We had the Arabica room, which was absolutely stunning. The delicious breakfast from the rooftop offers beautiful views of Stone Town, an amazing start to your day. Highly recommend!

Zanzibar Coffee House is a must-visit in Stone Town. The coffee is absolutely beautiful, rich, smooth, and full of flavor. The building itself is stunning: classic, traditional, and full of charm, with beautiful architecture that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. If you’re visiting Stone Town and only have time for five spots, this should definitely be one of them. A peaceful and authentic place to unwind with a great cup. I ordered the Americano, and we had a cake and an affogato. All very very good! It is a hotel and cafe.

Darajani Bazaar, located in the heart of Stone Town, Zanzibar, is a vibrant marketplace offering a wide array of goods from groceries and traditional kangas to fresh fish and local produce. The market comes alive every afternoon with stands selling souvenirs perfect for taking home. A visit to the fish aisle provides an authentic local experience as traders bargain for the best prices amidst lively banter.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Darajani Bazaar is the beating heart of Stone Town – a labyrinth of spices, tropical fruits, fresh fish straight from the ocean, and the everyday hustle that makes Zanzibar so alive. Here you don’t just shop – you experience the island’s true spirit through its colors, scents, and people’s stories. A must-visit for anyone who wants to feel the real Zanzibar!”

Local food, spice and general market area. Expect to be accosted steadily as you attempt to enjoy yourself. The market is great, the attention - not so much.
Chris C — Google review
I don't get the stone town hype, glad I didn't pay for a tour of sorts, have my own car (parking secure is 2000 Shillings) And why do people think this 'bazaar' is so cool? Unless you -like the locals- shop for meat fish veggies at the market, not sure it's worth a trip Most tourist products esp the spice bags are mass market, not fresh and looks like they're bumped up with fillers Other tourist shops stick out like a sore thumb and selling typical souvenirs that gather dust at home
A. R — Google review
Nice place to visit, there is so many wonder about the people there and things, only place where you can see some rarely spices which only available in Zanzibar, kindness and hospitality of the people of Zanzibar.. You can experience so much and enjoying your trip when you go to Darajani Bazaar...
Abby Z — Google review
One of the city green markets in Stone Town, Zanzibar. You can buy great fruits here, and other stuff you might or might not need. Like other places in Stone Town, you ought to be mindful of the prices, as bargaining is a way of life here. Itbis useful to learn a few Kuswahili words, you might save yourself a lot of Shilingi... Recommendation: red bananas!
Aleksandar S — Google review
The local market is interesting, but there are strong smells in the meat and fish area.
Camelia D — Google review
A great place to visit, very cheap products.
Jackson N — Google review
Smells ruddy awful in the heat, flies everywhere. The fisherman sit or stand amongst their fish which may be perfectly reasonable behaviour here, I don't know. But it looks disgusting. On the opposite side is the spice market, every stall sells the same. They hassle you so much. It's extremely busy. Watch your pockets, bags and children - I would recommend wrist straps for them actually. Even with our local guide it was horrid.

East Africa Slave Trade Exhibition (Slave Chambers - Cathedoral Church Of Christ)

4.4
(1318)
The East Africa Slave Trade Exhibition, also known as the Slave Chambers, is a historical site located in Stone Town. It offers visitors a glimpse into the dark history of the slave trade in East Africa. The underground holding cells and exhibit panels chronologically depict the harrowing experiences of slaves. Visitors are encouraged to explore this monument with a local guide who can provide insightful commentary on its history.
Visited here by myself. Informative guide will show you 4 places and explain to you about the history. It is worth visiting to understand the Slave Trade that was happening in East Africa including Zanzibar.
Haru I — Google review
Disturbing but an eye opening experience, mixed feelings flooded my heart. The place has a dimm aura but still worth a visit. We can't escape the horrible things we (collectively) have been doing to our fellow humans throughout history 😒
Mohammed A — Google review
This is split into three parts really. The first is a visit inside the Anglican church, which is very beautiful and built around the old "Whipping Post". The church is still in use now and has a beautiful pipe organ (only 1 of 2 in Africa) - there's only one man on the island that knows how to play it so it'll be an unfortunate day when he's no longer able. Moving on from the church there is a monument in memory of the slave trade, which is quite touching and certainly brings your own struggles etc into sharp relief. The monument actually uses some of the original 200 year old chains that bound the slaves on this site. Indoors you go downstairs to the two rooms where they kept the men (approximately 50 in one room) and the women/children (75 in one room). There are small slits in the walls acting as a light and air source. The ceilings are too low to stand up straight. Upstairs there is quite a lot of information to read through on large boards about the slave trade, it's abolition and some real life personal histories. There's a very sombre feel to the place and I felt a little apprehensive moving around the site. It costs 5 USD per person to enter, we already had a guide for the day who came in with us but there are also volunteers on site that will guide you round. There are clean bathrooms available. A small primary school sits on the edge of the grounds and they are very welcoming to visitors and want to show off their work.
Gary B — Google review
The Slave Museum undoubtedly carries strong historical significance, but the overall experience was rather disappointing. Apart from the original chains that were once used and the cellar where up to 75 prisoners were held for two days, there isn’t much else to see. The $10 entrance fee did not reflect the value of the visit. If you are truly interested in the history, you will likely learn much more about it online than in the museum itself.
Petr S — Google review
USD5 entry fee in cash or shelling. There are volunteer guides (you gave them tips at the end) that will explain you the history and meaning of the monuments and the places. Worthy! The visit will not cover more than 2 hours maximum, with the guide are 30mins.
Maria L — Google review
Definitely come to see this museum. We only need about 20 minutes. In the museum instead but I got one anyway and you just tip them . I came on a friesat after lunch wasn’t too busy
Lisa L — Google review
We visited this place during our tour of Stone Town, and I must say it is a true historical must-see. The exhibition, located at the site of the former slave market, offers a moving and eye-opening perspective on the East African slave trade. The displays are well curated with photos, documents, and testimonies that bring this painful history to life. Knowledgeable guides are available to walk you through the exhibition and share detailed stories, which makes the visit even more powerful and meaningful. It’s not always an easy visit emotionally, but it is an essential one to better understand Zanzibar’s past and its role in regional and global history.
Nafissa — Google review
A powerful and emotional exhibition that sheds light on the dark history of the East African slave trade. The preserved slave chambers and historical displays are deeply moving. A must-visit for anyone interested in understanding Zanzibar’s past.

Old Fort is a 17th-century structure in Stone Town, built by Omani Arab rulers as a defense against the Portuguese. The fort features striking ramparts and an open-air theatre where nightly entertainment and occasional festivals take place. Visitors can explore market stalls, art exhibitions, and nearby attractions such as the House of Wonders and the Old Dispensary.
Absolutely great place to walk around and do shopping, a lot of spices and they are so cheap, nice places to eat, you can’t get lost in there walking around, friendly people, just take a taxi or if you already have a hired car drive there plenty of free or cheap parking.
Mohamed E — Google review
During the day it's just another beach front walk, but night you get to watch the sunset, and the area transforms into a food market. Try the shawarma stalls, cheap and well worth the money. We really liked the guy asking chicken tikka shawarma. The guys selling mixture of meat and fish stick are more expensive.
Azizul G — Google review
Not really worth the visit, fortunately it's free. There's a story behind the fort's construction, extensions etc which is of minor interest. A few market stalls are set up inside the grounds which don't actually hassle too much. It's all just fairly quiet. Lots of rubbish and rubble strewn around and the remains of a large fire. But this isn't really that different to most villages I've seen on the island.
Gary B — Google review
Free entrance Nice to walk around. Not much to see though. Has a lot of shops, can get nice souvenirs and paintings
Mariam O — Google review
As the name suggests, Old Fort truly lives up to its heritage a city built from stone, rich in history and timeless beauty. Dating back to around the 18th century, this was once the royal palace area, and walking through it feels like stepping into another era. You’ll come across old cannons, gun storage areas, and elevated platforms once used for defense fascinating reminders of the town’s strategic past. There’s also a theater space where performances and cultural plays are held, adding a touch of artistry to the historical setting. One thing that stood out to me and something every cat lover will appreciate is how many beautiful cats freely roam around the gardens. They’re calm, friendly, and almost part of the town’s charm. You can easily spend time just taking photos of the cats, the stone buildings, and the lush gardens around. The view from Stone Town is spectacular, especially facing the ocean. From here, you can spot large ships, ferries, and container vessels gracefully moving across the turquoise water a perfect blend of history meeting modern trade. As the sun sets, Stone Town transforms into a lively scene with its night market. The air fills with the aroma of freshly prepared street food seafood, grilled meat, and local treats. One drink I particularly enjoyed was a refreshing sugarcane juice mixed with ice, made fresh by local vendors. Stone Town is more than just a historic site; it’s a place that combines culture, ocean views, architecture, and authentic street life. Whether you’re exploring during the day or enjoying the lively evenings, it’s a spot that captures the true essence of Zanzibar historic, vibrant, and full of character.

Right next to the more famous and reccomended Lukmann, this one we stumbled upon by accident and were swept away. Great (mainly Indian) food, particulary large selection of great curries for very affordable price (arround 10k TZS). Also some amazing naan breads, like the one with garlic. Staff was friendly and fairly quick, at least for Tanzanian standards. The place is clean and their service are amazing.

Because we really want to eat crabs, we went to this Indian restaurant asked for crab dish. The boss said that we will prepare the fresh crab for you tomorrow. We feel quite unsure whether it will be delicious or not. After eating it, it is the heaven! The taste and the sauce is fantastic! The crab is extremely fresh. It can be the most delicious sauce crab I have tried ever. Highly recommend! Although lucmann is very famous but they didn’t sell crabs. If you want to try crabs and love Indian curry, you must try this special dish! You need to order one day before. The naan is also terrific.

Among the best Indian food I've had. Tastes like a hybrid of the best of Rajasthan with its own unique Zanzibari flavor. Probably the most perfect level of spice that comes out of the kitchen, where it's heat that opens your tongue to flavour but doesn't overwhelm. It's a must visit. The staff and owner put their heart into their work.

Without a doubt the best food in Stone Town. After trying numerous places in the town which were all very disappointing I wish I had discovered Ma Shaa Allah Cafe sooner. Top quality, fresh seafood all cooked to order with plenty of flavour and authentic spices. The curries and chilli prawn are stand out dishes. Service is friendly and very attentive. Highly recommend.

Amazing place for the best indian food in Zanzibar. And very affordable. The owner Yaseer, born and brought up in Zanzibar is wonderful and so is the food. We had a very interesting chat while the food was being prepared. Being an Indian I am choosy of the meal i eat, especially indian cuisine, but hands down I can vouch that this is the best restaurant in Zanzibar and one of the best biriyanis and butter chicken i had in my life. Will visit again for sure. Thank you for the jovial chat and delicious meal.

Emerson Spice is a charming hotel located in Stone Town, Zanzibar, offering elegant rooms and suites with views of the Zanzibar Channel. Housed in a former residence of the island's Swahili rulers, this hotel provides a unique experience steeped in history. Each of its 10 rooms is individually styled to honor important figures from Zanzibar's past and features vintage furnishings reflecting indigenous design.
The staff at Emerson Spice were incredible. It felt like a 5 star hotel experience and I felt very taken care of during my stay. There’s someone waiting for you at the ferry to help with your bag and escort you to the hotel. The breakfast staff was top notch, and the breakfast was 3-course including fruits, eggs & toast, and a Tanzanian bread type. Everyone was kind and welcoming. I can’t speak highly enough of the various staff members that are there. Second - this was by far of the most unique hotels I’ve seen. It’s a historic building that’s been converted. I feel very fortunate, as a tourist, to be able to stay in such an architecturally beautiful, culturally significant, and historic place. Simply wow. Lastly, there’s deep spiritual presence here. I would recommend more exploration and honoring rituals of this.

If the idea of staying in a castle appeals to you then you will love this place. Like stepping back in time. We stayed in the Violeta room and then they gave us a day room (their newest room) on our flight day. Both were gorgeous. This was a very cool experience. Grandiose, 20 foot high rooms, grand colours, painting, balconies…simply amazing. Russell the manager is your consummate host. He could not be better at his job… outstanding! If there was a rating higher than 10, I would have given them Thank you Emerson spice hotel for this amazing experience 🙌

My wife and I had an amazing few days at this beautiful hotel. You are virtually transported back into the 1920’s with decorations, beautiful patio, spacious room (Kate), amazingly welcoming and helpful staff and a wonderful owner who made us feel so at welcome (Russell). My only complaint, would be the stairs…but it was good for a little exercise so not so bad. Highly recommended if you want to enjoy your stay in Stonetown and soak in the sounds and rich history and culture of Zanzibar…

Wonderful hotel that has worked hard to maintain the feel of Stone Town during the height of the spice trade and its Arab roots. Unique and interesting rooms, wonderful restaurants, incredible staff. Our room was on the top floor, as is the restaurant, with no elevators. worth the hike but not doable for everyone.

We stayed 1 night at the Emerson Spice hotel but wish we stayed for longer. It was a fantastic hotel full of character and the owner, Russell, made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was very good as well which included fresh doughnuts and jam. Great location as well, right in the heart of Stone Town.

New Monsoon Restaurant in Zanzibar, Tanzania offers a unique dining experience with its authentic Indian cuisine served with a modern twist. Located near Forodhani Garden, the restaurant provides a variety of dishes such as tandoori chicken, fish curry, and vegetable biryani. The French-run establishment also features live Taraab music on select nights and has a bar area as well as an open space adorned with rugs and cushions where guests can lounge kasbah-style.
I tried vegetarian Chiese and Indian cuisine. Had Veg fried rice, veg Manchurian gravy, Kadai paneer and tandoori roti. Taste was great. Their service was fast and great, staff was also helpful. Location is sea facing. Overall it was great experience. 👍

The food is really good and we enjoyed it here. The taste was really the best. Great ambiance and the open place is so good. This restaurant is located near the beach and very easy access to the beach. Do try this place for some great Indian food. Paneer tikka was really outstanding. Overall a good experience.

This was my first visit to Monsoon in 13 years, and was I as impressed and hugely satisfied as I was all those years before! Stepping in to this beautiful venue, one is lulled back into what could be described as "the heart and essence of Zanzibar and its People". The live music was just perfect! Service is excellent! The menu offered a great selection of items, catering for all preferences. Our selection of mains, a variety of sea foods, was perfectly prepared and I am at a loss of words to describe just how intensely delicious and fresh the meals were! Thank you for creating a perfect memory of an evening well spent! We have already recommended Monsoon to many!

Hands down, the best bryani i have had in a while. Authentic food and cheap prices. The local cats also provide some good entertainment. Def recommended!
Farrukh A — Google review
I walked in for my first meal in Zanzibar, following a recommendation from a friend. I did not get to experience taraab music because I came too early but the food was very entertaining, offering a great variety of flavours on one plate. It was, however, pricier and did not provide a wow factor as in other locations.
Lenka B — Google review
Excellent. Great ambience and tasty food. Around 15$ for a 3 course lunch with a glass of Wine or $15 a dish as per photo.

Day 2

South side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the south side side of town. Start the day off with Tembo House Hotel, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Stone Town Cafe. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Hotel
Nestled in Zanzibar City, Tembo House Hotel is a historic beachfront hotel offering a relaxed atmosphere and a range of amenities. The rooms are adorned with wood carved furniture and Swahili four-poster beds, some featuring balconies with sea or pool views. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant serving local and international cuisine. The hotel's location provides easy access to the Old Fort, House of Wonders, and the vibrant Stone Town district.
This is such a lovely old style hotel. The hotel is directly on the beach. There are 3 pools, which one of them has amazing views of the sea. The rooms are on the smaller side, but they are so cute, cosy and clean. The best is the bathroom, so stylish. If you love unique old style, you would love this place. We didn't have breakfast so can't give my reviews on that. The only downside is there is no lift, so its not ideal for elderly people, but overall the place is a Stone town gem.

We enjoyed our stay. Staff were friendly, polite and always willing to assist. Special mention to the Food and Beverage servers, in particular Denys and Hasnuu Ishak. They really know the true meaning of what customer service is all about and every time went over and beyond when serving us. Also like to mention how welcoming Rahiem always makes us feel whenever we visited the property and now stayed because of his welcoming nature. Keep up the great service Tembo Hotel!

Great hotel with all the amenities you could expect. Stayed only 2 nights but was quite comfortable. Three swimming pools were quite useful as I don't like crowds. Food and drinks were very affordable. The two of us had 2 lunches, a dinner, drinks a few times and some laundry done for $106. Quite an eyeopener. Food was excellent and the buffet breakfast was appreciated. Would recommend this hotel for singles or couples. Not much to do away from the hotel.

Tembo House Hotel offers a unique stay in Stone Town, combining historic architecture with a touch of Swahili elegance. The location is unbeatable—right on the beachfront and within walking distance of key cultural sites. What stands out: - 🏝️ Prime location: Ideal for exploring Stone Town and enjoying sunset views over the ocean. - 🛏️ Character-filled rooms: Traditional décor and antique furnishings add charm. - 🍽️ On-site restaurant: Decent variety with local and international options. Room for improvement: - 🔇 Noise levels: Some rooms near the street or courtyard can be noisy, especially at night. - 🧼 Maintenance: A few areas could benefit from more consistent upkeep and attention to detail. - 🚿 Bathroom amenities: Basic and functional, but not luxurious. Overall, Tembo House Hotel is a solid choice for travelers seeking atmosphere and location over modern luxury. With a few refinements, it could elevate the guest experience even further

This is a beautiful old hotel 😍 with a lot of history, some good, some bad. Our room was huge with a beautiful bathroom and good air con, and comfortable bed. Nicely renovated and you can still see the age by hew perfectly and beautifully the stairs are worn from 150+years of use. It was a really beautiful hotel 😍.

We stayed for 4 nights in September 2025 at a Tembo Apartment, which was about a 2-minute walk to the main hotel but we didn't mind it. What can I say about this hotel, everything was great, from the aesthetics to the location to the cleanliness to the service... It's within walking distance from many restaurants, the market, and Freddie Mercury Museum, which we loved. They even gave us a tour of Freddie's house, which is now an apartment rented by the hotel. The staff is professional and always smiling. A big thank you to Mr. Mohammad (Manager) for booking us tours tailored to our needs. We enjoyed speaking Arabic with you as well! All the best from Rony and Elise ❤️

Great hotel. We booked triple room, they were great. Big beds, lots of space, very clean and great bathroom. We were in an adjacent building, 50 meters away, very easy and beautiful. 🎨 Freddie Mercury’s Birthplace — A Must-Visit in Stone Town 🇹🇿 One of the must-visit landmarks on your Stone Town tour is the childhood home of world-famous artist Freddie Mercury. The building and its surroundings are well preserved and reflect the cultural charm of Zanzibar. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or simply curious about music history, it’s definitely worth a stop—just to say you’ve stood at the doorstep of a legend’s beginnings 🏠✨

Great experience to stay in the building where Freddie lived for his first years. The building - part of the Tembo hotel - is a great place to stay. Clean, large rooms, fridge, in the heart of Stone Town. Breakfast, pool at the seaside - those facilities are across the street within the Tembo complex. The only negative scoring is for the traffic noises which might keep you awake for a certain time throughout the night.

Visited the museum and was very enjoyable, and affordable to visit. It is a small museum packed with photos and memorabilia… sadly no souvenirs were available but worth while visiting

Freddie Mercury's house is located in stone town. It's decorated outside with photos of the legend. Just next to it you will find the show must go on museum. It opens at 10 AM and closes at 6 PM. The entrance was 8 dollars.

Meh. Freddie's house is now a hotel and only guests are allowed inside. The museum, next to the house is 8USD per person but has nothing to offer. You might get nostalgic for the artist and buy a ticket for the museum, but it's not worth it at all. Can avoid completely.

The places has a lot history and photos of Freddie Mercury but I think they could do more because it’s very small. You pay 8 dollars for the entrance. If you are a very big fan of Mercury, I recommend it.

Wow I'm from England where Freddie lived and had an amazing career. We all loved Freddie for his music, out of the box amazing ideas and for what he stood up for, Freddie was Freddie and was British in our eyes and will always be. This museum is an amazing tribute to his life complete with his music and hand written lyrics, well done to the people who created this place, was lucky enough to sit at his Piano and reminiscing from his amazing life and music.
Paul W — Google review
This museum is very very small, and it's mostly photographs of Zanzibar and then of Freddie's life. The museum is in the bottom floor of a building where Freddie lived (Freddie lived on the top floor and you do not have access to that).
Heather S — Google review
Didn’t know that he was born here. Nice surprise! It can be bigger museum with more collections:)
YJ S — Google review
Entrance is for 8 USD for adults. Museum closes 6pm Cool and nice collection of pics and customes. Favorite part was the hand written lyrics. You won't need more than 30 mins in the museum.
Mariam O — Google review
There are very few exhibits, and you can't feel Freddie Mercury's aura at all. This is not a museum
Tina S — Google review
Of course almost everyone visits this museum, it’s unfortunately very small and overpriced (8 USD). After introducing the island of Zanzibar in the first stage of the museum there’s a documentation of the life of FM. It’s a bit sad that at the end of the (small) museum there’s not a proper farewell given to this extraordinary person, not mentioned when, how and where he spent his final days.
Saar N — Google review
Small but cute. The most exciting was the original piano, childhood pictures and hand written song texts.
Anna G — Google review
This is an absolute dud — this “museum” is little more than a small room with a few printouts including quotes from family and friends and lacking a factual depiction of Mercury’s life (without an honest farewell to his life and legacy). I recommend taking a photo in front of the home and moving on with your day.

What a great shop, a big selection or art and handicrafts, as well as spices, coffees, tshirts and other gift items. Bought all my souvenirs here.

I spent more time here than I should i should have because of the air conditioning! It’s a beautiful shop where you can get all the souvenirs you need. From footwear, accessories, clothes etc. the prices are on the high side but they are also better quality than on the beach. I got some beautiful masai sandals and fridge magnets

The best of everything under one roof, fully air conditioned and had toilets too. The prices are good and you could find something for every budget. I made it just in time before a heavy rain poured over Stone Town for an hour. This Sunday also came with a scheduled power cut until 2 p.m., but Stone Town Café was prepared—its generator kicked in without a fuss. So I spent a quiet morning there, sipping coffee and reading, while the rain fell steadily outside.

Masa Japanese Restaurant is a popular dining spot located in the heart of Stone Town, Tanzania. It offers an extensive menu featuring traditional Japanese dishes made with fresh ingredients, including sushi and miso soup. The restaurant provides prompt, kind, and attentive service that enhances the dining experience. With a small terrace overlooking the vibrant streets of downtown Stone Town, it is the only Japanese restaurant on the island offering Asian-inspired fusion food. Guests can enjoy a wide selection of freshly prepared seafood dishes in a pleasant atmosphere.
In the heart of Stone Town, along one of the main roads, you will see boards marking the way to Masa. Up the stairs, down the passage, and take a turn. The outside area has plenty of tables seating smaller or larger groups. If you prefer to sit inside, you'll notice the bar, decor, and several Sake bottles on display. Calm space, with very friendly staff. Menu is very wide with a lot of interesting options. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, food was delicious!

A good spot if you're craving Asian cuisine. We tried the sushi and the beef stir-fried noodles — it was good, not exceptional, but definitely fair for the price. Getting there can be a bit confusing: you have to enter a building and go upstairs to find the restaurant. But once inside, the setting is pleasant, with a view over a lively little street that adds a nice atmosphere to the meal.

One of the best meals we’ve had in all of Zanzibar. The Japanese chef is truly gifted. His team is wonderful and charming and excellent service - and with a quick smile and great senses of humor, too. Really, we spent several hours lingering because the atmosphere is so welcoming and comfortable, the service is exceptional, and the food delicious. There is a large dining area overlooking the beach, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The breakfast buffet was just average, but the staff were nice. There are men that stand on the beach trying to sell you stuff while you eat, and it was annoying and really killed the vibe. They stand behind a rope but they definitely yell and try to get your attention.
Heather S — Google review
Quite literally a museum with profound historical insights... The infinity pool facing the ocean is amazing. plus the cafe is open 24/7 which is a great plus.I highly recommend it
Bryan O — Google review
This restaurant does not match the hotel. It was bad, simply not good. The first thing I noticed was that the napkins were made of paper, and there was a container on the table (see picture) with paper napkins like in an American diner. Then, I was served my Coca-Cola in a shabby plastic bottle (see picture). When it came to the food, my companion was served their appetizer, but mine was forgotten. When the waitress brought my main course while my companion was still having their appetizer and was actively eating, it became clear that they had indeed forgotten my appetizer. Then we moved on to the main course. My meat was completely overcooked, and you could tell that my food had come from the microwave because it had been ready for about 20 minutes earlier. The ambiance wasn’t great either. After about half an hour, two musicians arrived with violins, which seemed like a good idea, but it turned out they missed half the notes and even covered pop songs, like "My Heart Will Go On," unfortunately badly. For those happy with burgers and pizza, it might be a fit.
Aaron T — Google review
Excellent service, food is good. The decorations are lovely, right on the beach with gorgeous sunset point.

Service was okay, but the seafood platter was not nice at all. Small and not tasty with lots of vegetables that we did not ask for and to make it look big. No alcoholic beverages served. Juice and view of beach were nice.
Pieter P — Google review
We had only a few coffees here, on the terrace with the beach in front of us and a nice breeze. The five stars are for the location. Service or price were not remarkable.
Kurt M — Google review
Only go if you want something random you haven't ordered and rude service and long waiting hours...first i ordered my food and drinks at the same time, after finally being able to get our order taken after we waited for a while. I ordered an ice tea to drink which was given to me lukewarm after almost an hour, since the waiter had forgotten it. Then we got our food, which we had ordered two chicken alfredo pasta, but what we were served was instead some curry chicken pasta. Immediately we asked the waiter when he put down our plate, and he said he would check with the kitchen. 10 minutes later he hadn't returned but took other people's orders instead. When we asked him again, he said, he forgot, but he would ask them. We couldn't get a hold of any waiter to send our food back, and since we had been at the restaurant for nearly 1,5 hours at that point, my friend ate her pasta. Another 20 minutes went by without being helped, until we finally got a hold of him again and he said he would check. He returned again with a collegue and insited that the pasta was correct, since it was the correct shape - even though we told him many times, that it was the sauce? Then they blamed the waiting time on eid preparations, which is fair, but i don't see how it being eid would make the chef start putting curry in random dishes? They insisted it was correct and that it is just what they call alfredo pasta, but nowhere on the menu did it say curry nor does alfredo have curry in it? When we said we didn't want it, because it was not what we ordered, they were rude and took our plates. The waiter came back with our bill including both pastas, even though i hadn't even eaten mine, and then disappered so we were left waiting once again. Ended up getting one of them removed, but the whole experience was very unpleasent, and they didn't seem to understand nor care, why we were upset, that we didn't get, what we had ordered. The photos are what chicken alfredo is supposed to be vs what we were served :)

This relaxed corner cafe on Shangani Street is known for its healthy salads and freshly squeezed juices. With colorful plastic tables and a laid-back island pace, it's a charming place to unwind.
Hidden gem and if you see it from the outside you wouldn’t give a penny. Most of the dishes are half price compared to touristic restaurants. Very good food and especially fresh (they might not have everything and they go out to buy fresh fruits or missing ingredients, therefore you get very fresh dishes and drinks). Plan around 30min till the food is served because they cook stuff in the moment. We had the best cooked tuna ever. We suggest to get the fish of the day. The staff is also very nice and welcoming. If you see there’s nobody inside, they’re in the kitchen, feel feee to knock 😂

Super nice little restaurant! Delicious food for a very friendly price, compared to other restaurants around. Burgers, wraps, curry, ,++ and great fresh juice. Try the ginger soda! The people working there are friendly and welcoming. If you want to get away from the typical tourist places, this is the place!

Our preferred restaurant in Stone Town, offering succulent food for unbeatable prices (4 people for under 70k Tsh). Curries are tasty, fishburgers attractive and the selection of wraps is quite creative. Fruit juices can be mixed to your taste. Service super friendly while a bit slow because it takes time to make good food from scratch. About 15 seats but we never saw more than 2 tables occupied. A bit hidden in a side street back the Dolphin but worth looking for it!

Had Curried Chickpeas here for lunch and the dish was phenomenal and very flavorful. It did take about 20-25 minutes to prepare as they make it fresh to order, but the wait was worth it. This place accepts cash only, though US dollars are also accepted at a fair exchange.
Y B — Google review
So let’s start off - YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT. There are too many bad reviews of the wait time. Get over it people. The reviews all say this, suck it up you’re on vacation - Hakuna Matata and Pole Pole. Wait time was 45 min from sitting to getting the food. They actually were missing ingredients and went out and bought it but apologized for the delay. They only take cash but they will walk with you over to a local Cambio or a place for credit card (with a small fee). The place and the location does look a bit sketchy but the people running it are very very nice, it is super safe so don’t judge a book by its cover. The drinks were great and very fresh. Like I said they went out and bought some of the ingredients instead of saying, “oh we don’t have it.” The fish burger was tasty. My daughter had the fish and chips which was a hit small but just right for lunch and the curry was flavorful. It is not Michelin star but it is very good. The prices really show how much all the other places overcharge. Lunch for 3 is less than 45,000ksh. You can’t even get a burger at the Hyatt for that :). So 1) pole pole - it will take time 2) the place is bare bones 3) the food is good and fresh 4) the price makes you wonder why everything else is so expensive

Rustic café, seats max 15. Been there a couple times for something small (wrap, burger) and it kind of hits the spot if you're a tourist and hankering for something a bit like home. The quality is passable. Slow service.
Peter D — Google review
Honestly this place deserves more attention, it is an amazing little restaurant with fresh food geared towards healthiness. Absolutely AMAZING juices that you can create with your own mix of fruits, very good seafood (the tuna deserves a mention of honor) and very relaxed environment.
Ivano A — Google review
This place is really cute and just off the path of the main road with a more authentic feel. The food was delicious and the people friendly. If you are in a hurry let them know as the food can take a while to arrive. We ordered the spiced ice tea and spiced ice coffee, coconut curry and sweet n sour prawns. Would recommend all! 10% student and volunteer discount, No wifi, and bathroom next door at Stonetown Cafe.

For day 3, we bundled attractions like 6 Degrees South and Beach House Zanzibar and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

Located in the heart of Stone Town, Tanzania, 6 Degrees South is a vibrant restaurant and bar offering modern Afro-Continental cuisine and stunning sunset views from its rooftop terrace. The venue boasts a relaxed atmosphere with spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas. Guests can enjoy generously sized burgers, flame-grilled steaks, and an extensive selection of beverages including fine beers, sparkling wines, whiskey, and cocktails.
We really enjoyed the food there, we tried the coconut fish curry and the fish and chips, they were super tasty! We had food on the upper terrace, it is really nice but not so much space in the shadow of you plan to have food there. The service was nice and helpful but a bit slow due to the fact that the kitchen is downstairs. Overall I will definitely recommend it!

Great service from Ayoub with greatrecommendations! Nice Friday modern contemporary evening vibes. Delicious savory blend of local cuisine with modern style 😋 . I enjoyed really enjoyed comparing American southern food to Tanzanian cuisine. Fish cakes to salmon crochet; Ungali, Fufu, and Grits. Im glad to connect with my culture roots 🌍

The food was good, and the view from the rooftop was lovely. However, one of the waiters was insistent about asking for my number, while another rudely called me “nihao” (I’m not Chinese, by the way). Overall, the experience was not worth it for me, and I will probably not go back.

Very upscale place. They have Karaoke on Tuesday night. They could improve on the beers available… Go early or make a reservation if you go for Karaoke night. Views should be immaculate during the day!

Beach House Zanzibar is a vibrant beachfront restaurant located on the picturesque Shangani Street in Zanzibar. It offers a delectable selection of seafood dishes, prioritizing freshness and taste. The menu features an impressive variety, including traditional local cuisine and international classics like pasta, pizza, and curries. This 6-day beach getaway promises an unforgettable experience at the renowned Zanzibar beach paradise, known as one of East Africa's premier coastal destinations.
We had a wonderful dining experience at this restaurant with its view to the ocean! We ordered grilled octopus and chicken chili pizza, both dishes were absolutely delicious. A special thanks to our server, Paulina, who was incredibly kind and attentive throughout our meal.

It is one of my favorites in Zanzibar. It is walking distance from the hotel we were staying at and little to no wait to be seated. Once seated we were almost immediately asked for drinks and starters. The food was fresh, flavorfull, and worth the price. They have a rast range of sea food, from fish pizza to sushi. It was so good that we returned the next day and our waiter was happy to see us back. If you are visiting Zanzibar, do yourself a favor and visit Beach House.

Great views over the water. This bar/restaurant is beautiful. The staff were very welcoming and the service was excellent. The cocktails were really good and the food was excellent. We are so pleased we found the beach house. We were lucky enough to catch the band when we went too and they were brilliant. If you’re in Stone Town, visit the beach house, you won’t regret it.

Is good and quite restaurant. Best for couples with sea view. Waiters should keep attention to customers, some time if is not busy you can wait them for 15 minutes but they are friendly Price is moderate.

The food at Beach House Restaurant was quite good, fresh, flavorful, and nicely presented. Unfortunately, the service was seriously lacking. The staff seemed disorganized, inattentive, and very slow, which made the whole experience frustrating despite the quality of the food. With better service, this place could easily be a top spot, but as it stands, the poor service really brought the experience down.

Great spot - they do all sorts of food - western, Asian but most importantly they have really great versions of local foods. We had seafood based Zanzibari curries that were amazing. Staff were friendly and attentive. The view was stunning - we sat and watched the sunset in awe

Guests can enjoy an outdoor pool, dining options, and a rooftop terrace restaurant that provides stunning views of the bay. Great location for exploring Stone Town. Comfortable room. Breakfast selection was large with nice service. Reception and concierge staff also friendly and helpful. Pool area nice though I didn’t use.

I had a lovely experience. The hotel is beautiful, with a perfect mix of traditional charm and modern comfort. The rooms were clean and cozy, and the view of the ocean was amazing. The staff were kind, always smiling, and ready to help. Breakfast was fresh and tasty every morning. It’s a peaceful place, great for relaxing. I’d definitely stay here again.

Every staff member we met was so warm & friendly. They greeted us with a glass of pineapple juice on check in & made sure our stay was amazing. The rooms were beautiful & someone did turn down service for us every night. The food at the restaurants was so good we ate until we were going to burst. The location was great - we could easily walk to Forodhani Market in the evening & explore Stone Town just by walking out the front door. Truly a wonderful stay!

This is a wonderful hotel. It is always great to be near the water but this hotel is also charming in its design (reflecting the local history) and situated right in Stonetown. However, it is mainly the staff that makes staying in the hotel such a great experience. They were universally friendly and helpful - from front of house to restaurant. All were genuinely motivated to make my experience of Zanzibar an excellent one. Thank you to all.

Africa House Hotel, located in Zanzibar, is a classic colonial hotel with a rich history. Originally built by a slave trader from Oman, it later became an English club and now stands as a boutique luxury hotel. The hotel exudes antique elegance and offers 15 rooms filled with antiques. Guests can enjoy dining at the Tradewinds Restaurant or relax at the Majlis shisha lounge. The Sunset Bar is a must-visit for cocktails while enjoying stunning views of the Indian Ocean.
Went for a meal with a large group. Has a nice view of the sea (although is very dark on the terrace). It is also on the expensive side for Stone Town but I think that's because it's aimed at tourists. Food is okay, so of you're looking for somewhere that does something for everyone then it does the job.

We just dined in their restaurant where the food was ok nothing really special. They gave us menus in dollars which had high prices in my opinion. The cups of Icecream is 10$, my food with calamari was 15$. I think the prices are high for Africa.
Ines P — Google review
The location is good, right by the sea and once the building work opposite has been completed the view will be very nice. However sadly that’s where the positives end. There is a bar or club very nearby which played really loud music until about 2am, affecting the quality of sleep. The toilet was leaking water all over the floor. This was clearly not a new issue due to the water stains all over the floor, it has been leaking for some time. The plaster on the walls and ceiling is flaking and crumbling. Everything was covered in flakes of dust, including the cups you’re given for tea (but not provided with a kettle), and the floor was filthy. The bathroom is in a state of disrepair, it was leaking and mouldy and stank of drains. The shower was simply a mess. The water from the taps and shower came out salty. The bedsheets were stained and the duvet was just on the bed without a duvet cover or sheet covering it. The towels were extremely old and threadbare and also stained. The breakfast wasn’t a buffet, we were offered omelette, pancakes, or French toast, and fruit. It was ok. However the coffee was served in filthy cups and saucers and had things floating in it.

First visited in 2008. Return visit in 2023. The location is still superb. The “Sunset Bar” still has a timeless character to it with tourists still seeking the amazing views of the setting sun (weather permitting of course). The rooms are dated and upkeep is needed. Our room facing west leaked quite badly in the heavy rains during our 3 day/2 night stay. Regrettably, the top level terrace we sat on in 2008 has been closed now for a number of years probably due to needed upkeep and is now just an area for storage of chairs and tables. The main bar terrace still gathers and serves the crowds. Price is middle of the pack, but some of the price is for the location and not necessarily reflecting of the amenities. Overall a great spot for a few days and well worth it for the sunset views.
Jeff K — Google review
The sun is a superstar and the sunset view from this restaurant is stunning. We had the octopus which was as tender and delicious. A 10 out of 10. I would have given a five star review if not for how long we waited for the cheque. I was a waiter back in the day so I'm sensitive to the demands put on people in these jobs. The wait was unnecessary and we had asked several times for the bill.
Mark F — Google review
Nice area that is slightly away from city center, but still a reasonable walk to Stone Town sights. We were even able to walk directly from the ferry terminal in about 15 minutes (only about 1km). Right on the water and quiet. Uniquely ornate building and pretty, clean room. We sat at the Sunset Bar for a few hours enjoying dinner (the small seafood sampler which had more food than two of us could eat) and drinks (Kilimanjaro beer), watching the sun go down and some local men practice break dancing by the water. We liked the octopus and prawns best. The crab and lobster were a bit of work. It's pretty empty in low season (and cheaper!) which suits us just fine. We would recommend this hotel! It was a very comfortable stay.

Nice view, very expensive drinks. Staff was terrible, one waiter trying to sell us marijuana, acted very rude and tried to rip us off. We asked for the bill, he didn’t want to give us because our drinks were not finished. When we got it, he charged 5000 shillings too much. When we confronted him he just laughed. Very bad experience and wouldn’t recommend the bar to anyone. Enough alternatives with similar nice views. Edit: after this experience we confronted the management with this and they handled the situation very well.
Thomas C — Google review
The place has a terrace with a great view. Stick to bottled beverages. Tried the cocktails but weren't great. Food was terrible. Ordered fish and chips. The chips were precooked and just deepeed in oil which wasn't as hot as should have been so imagine... Fish was chewy. The food was on my table literally one minute but when explained that could not be eaten, the cashier didn't even acknowledged my feedback and charged me. I understand I can't expect food as good as other places but it was inedible.

The Sunset Bar at Africa House Hotel is a must-visit spot in Zanzibar, offering one of the best sunset-watching experiences in Stone Town. The hotel's colonial-style architecture and rooftop terrace provide an excellent vantage point to witness the breathtaking sunset over the Indian Ocean. While enjoying your favorite drink, you can watch traditional dhows sailing against the tangerine-orange sky.
Enjoyable dining experience, combined with the pleasure of watching the sunset. Warmly welcomed by Mwanaharus supported by Zabron and the Team, it was a fun evening. We recommend.

Massively overpriced. My dish arrived 15 minutes before the dish of my partner. His fish was basically raw. We sent it back. No apology made when we brought up the topic. Nice view though. Food itself was ok, not great. The local dish tasted alright but quite bland so I assume it wasn’t really made the local way. Cocktail was below average. *edit: they apologised once we paid*

The original British Colonial Club, this restaurant is a perfect sunset spot. All cocktails are $5. We stayed for dinner and had delicious food. The Lobster was fresh and perfectly cooked. Beef biriyani was yummy. Our waitress was so lovely. Friendly and helpful. The perfect hostess. Prices are a bit higher than most places but you get what you pay for.

Huge menu, but only 5 items are typical Zanzibar cuisine. Very large portions - 1 dish is enough for 2 people. Nice view from the terrace. Very long waiting time for service - we ate for about 20 minutes and waited for the waitress like twice.

Nice location and good for enjoying sunset! Average food and price ok! Don’t come just for a drink, they will be “willing” to serve more!

Very expensive cocktails with no style or substance. Literally just tasted like fruit juice, and for the price charges you’d expect something half-decent. Nice place to watch sunset but there are many more spots around that at least offer a decent tipple.

Patamu, which means "three" in Swahili, is a popular spot in Zanzibar's Stone Town. It offers free Wi-Fi and consists of three floors with different atmospheres. The first floor houses a lively bar, the second floor features an affordable pub with good food, and the third floor boasts a lounge area with stunning sea views. Visitors praise the great atmosphere, excellent service, and reasonable prices for both food and drinks.
I highly recommend Patamu for a delightful experience. The bar on the third floor and restaurant on the second offer a perfect blend of great atmosphere, excellent service, and stunning views of the coast. The music adds to the ambiance, creating a lively environment. Beyond the enjoyable aspects, the affordability of both food and drinks makes it even more appealing. The kindness and assistance from the owner and his son made me feel safe and comfortable throughout my visit. I encourage all tourists to give this place a try and enjoy the vibes, views and hospitality.

Always playing local Music, good place for drinks and a good local place if you want to hangout late during the week . We ordered chicken wings , and they served us the part of the wing that you break off cause there is only bones . It was really funny and had to return , they apologized but just say you don’t have any chicken wings then serve bones . Otherwise we ordered two rice dishes and they were ok . Would give them a second chance . The food was fresh that was served but taste was average . I saw some people Order pasta maybe that was better. The restaurant closes at 12 am if you need some late night food . Cash only

We had a great lunch here. Stuffed calamari and a chicken burger were a win. Cold beers and ice for water. The barman was full of chat and such fun. I bet there is an awesome party scene at night.

Reasonably priced (a beer is 5.000 tsh here, a price that won’t be matched anywhere around), great atmosphere and really nice staff. Came here for drinks some evenings, especially recommend the fresh juices (which are also used in the cocktails) and the dawa-cocktail. Yes, it’s not as fancy as some of the other bars around - but it’s way more authentically Tanzania.

There are 2 different menus here. When we chose the fresh juice, it was listed as 3000. 30 minutes later the same juice in the corrected menu costs 5000. huh

Well. It's changed the name lately.. thus it's not called Tatu any more.. I went with my elder son around 9 at night.. it was a bit quiet. The second floor is resturant and up above is like a club. Some tourist and some working ladies from the mainland.. was OK.. nothing special.

Travellers Cafe is a popular spot among locals and expats, offering hearty meals and cold beers in an unassuming local atmosphere. It's not the place for fancy cocktails or wine, but rather a place to relax with an icy cold beer while watching Zanzibar beach life go by. The cafe has free WiFi and is a great spot to work from, with friendly staff serving strong coffee and delicious juice.

I had a cheese & tomato sandwich and a banana shake. The sandwich was so dry, there was nothing on it except tomato and cheese, no spread/mayo/pesto. There is a large dining area, all outdoors, and partially covered. The waitress seemed very disinterested, and then tried to say the credit card machine might not work. If you have that problem you should say you are a cash only establishment. Overall it was very disappointing; the only good thing here is that you're beachfront, but there are plenty of other places that are beachfront as well.
Heather S — Google review
A bar perched on the beach with easy access and a beautiful view, even in a bit of cloudy weather. Drinks were good, the only thing that had me trying to get out fast was other patrons. Unfortunately it's very much an expats bar and sometimes you wonder if they volunteered or were asked to leave. Someone smoking a bad cigarette and playing music on their phone like it was their private patio quickly ruined the experience.

Explore the dark history of Zanzibar by taking a guided tour to the Anglican Cathedral, formerly known as the slave market. Learn about its centuries-long role in the East African slave trade and its transformation into a Christian cathedral. Afterward, wander through Stone Town's narrow streets and browse curio shops. The tour lasts approximately 3 hours and provides insight into this tragic period in Zanzibar's past.
Great place to go to understand the history of Zanzibar (the slavery and ivory trade, the church and influences on the culture). You are given a verified private tour guide once you pay the entrance fee and the guide gives you lots of info and you are free to ask questions. The guides are also available to hire for a walking tour of Stone Town if there are other sites you want to see.
Connie O — Google review
A good place to start getting a glimpse of Zanzibar history and how it was mostly centered on slaves, and how slave business continued even after it was officially abolished. You pay an admission ticket at the entrance and are given a guide. The tour was a bit short and the information rushed, probably because we were the only 2 people assigned to our guide, but we managed to see the main points of this establishment.
Razvan S — Google review
The Anglican Cathedral in Stone Town, built on the site of the old slave market, is a poignant blend of history and spirituality. The cathedral's architecture is impressive, reflecting the island's diverse cultural influences. The adjacent memorial garden serves as a powerful reminder of the painful past, making this site both a symbol of resilience and a place for reflection.

My visit to the Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral in Zanzibar, Tanzania, was a sobering and thought-provoking experience. The site was formerly a slave market, where thousands of enslaved Africans were bought and sold during the 19th century. The history of the site is presented in a clear and informative way, with displays and exhibits that detail the brutal reality of the slave trade. The guided tour was insightful and provided a greater understanding of the horrific conditions that the enslaved people were subjected to. The Anglican Cathedral, which now stands on the site of the former slave market, is a beautiful and striking building that provides a fitting tribute to the victims of the slave trade. The architecture is impressive, with high ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate details. Overall, my visit to the Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral was a powerful and moving experience that left a lasting impression. It is a reminder of the inhumanity and cruelty of the slave trade and serves as a call to action to continue to work towards a more just and equitable society. I highly recommend a visit to this historic site for anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of the history of Zanzibar and the impact of the slave trade.

This is one of the better things to do in Stone Town. It has a whole presentation on the history of the slave trade. It provides more content and perspective than what one might learn from a high school history class. It's worth the visit for that alone. There is a small entrance fee. I can't remember how much, so relatively inconsequential. I've attached a few snap-shots of the narrative, but take note it is only a fraction of the content provided.

Sad tribute to a practice that should never have been. This museum curates the old slave trade practices, with pictures and tales from survivors . The Anglican Christmas Church Cathedral pays homage to the missionaries who helped abolish slave trade. The underground dungeons where slaves were packed like sardines saddened my heart. I admire and show much respect to those who survived to tell their stories . The exhibition was very informative although most of the relics have since been lost and built over. Historic and should not be missed . Donations help and using one of the guide tours helps contribute to the economy

First of all, where you can find this in world? Complaints about paying are riddicilous for visiting slave market, THE church made in both styles and just to be there is pretty astonishing for me. I pitty those coments. Amazing place amazing tour and amazing part of history to see what was done and still is done in different mental state and how we “progress” or not. Few things in World history are important like this, there is no other way to put it. Was great visiting and worth of “paying” for this.

In order to get inside and see the St Anglican Church and the Old Slave Market monument you have to pay a symbolic amount and hire a guide. Our guide was very informative and she helped us learn a lot about this sad part of history. It is must-visit if you are exploring Stone Town.

The House of Wonders or Palace of Wonders is a landmark building in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It is the largest and tallest building of Stone Town and occupies a prominent place facing the Forodhani Gardens on the old town's seafront, in Mizingani Road. It is located between the Old Fort and the Palace Museum.

The House of Wonders has unfortunately seen better days it is now in desperate need of repair and lightbulbs. Many exhibits and some of the upper corridors are very poorly lit. It's still worth a visit if only for the experience of pushing open the biggest set of doors you'll ever step through. Also right outside is a guy selling cold drinks who I bargained the hire of his bicycle for $5 for an hour, an excellent way to look around the town.

Palace Museum not sure if knows as House of Wonders holds the richest history's of Zanzibar in a political and historical Sense It has well reserved treaties and original painted antiques of the sultans and the queen which were given as gifts by various famous Austrian Artist and have been in place since 1800's till date hence if you planning your trip to the beautiful island of Zanzibar be sure to be able to visit the Palace museum just next to the ferry and can be seen on your entry to stone town via the ferry as well. Has a perfect view of all the four islands next to it,Prison Island being the most famous of all.

|The House of Wonders was once the most modern building in East Africa—it was the first building to have electricity and an elevator—and it mixes elements of European style and Zanzibari tradition by including cast iron columns, elaborate door carvings, coral rag, open central courtyards, and mangrove ceilings that together form a truly unique architectural achievement. Just next to it is the Palace Museum, built by the second sultan of Zanzibar in 1883, which is an opulent palace comprised of beautiful marble flooring, coral stone walls, and silver decorations. The palace was built in the Omani style as an extravagant Arab mansion, and holds many relics that offer a rare glimpse of a past era. The House of Wonders and Palace Museum have been converted into popular cultural destinations; the House of Wonders presents exhibitions dedicated to Swahili culture and the Palace Museum highlights its ties to Zanzibar's Omani history. | Location: Unguja Island, Zanzibar city Tanzania. #Tanzania #songosongoisland #fanjove #kilwa #lindi #fanjoveprivateisland #zanzibar #daresalaam #canoneos #5dsr #holiday #traveling #travelphotography #travel #sunset #sunrise #houseofwonder #unguja #ungujaIsland #pembaisland #SaadaniNationalPark #SaadaniSafariLodge

Church
Saint Joseph's Cathedral, located in the Baghani area of Stone Town, Zanzibar, is a significant historical landmark. Constructed between 1893 and 1898 by French missionaries, this Roman Catholic cathedral was designed by the same architect responsible for the Marseilles church in France. Its twin spires are a defining feature that stands out in Stone Town's skyline and can be seen from afar off the coast.
St. Joseph's Cathedral, located in Stone Town, Zanzibar, is a significant historical and architectural landmark. Constructed by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898, the cathedral's design was inspired by the Marseille Cathedral in France, evident in its prominent twin spires that dominate Stone Town's skyline. The cathedral's interior once featured paintings depicting scenes from the Old Testament. However, these artworks were unfortunately destroyed during a restoration in 2014. The building materials, including tiles and stained glass windows, were imported from France, reflecting the European influence on its construction. Situated in the Baghani area off Kenyatta Road, the cathedral remains an active place of worship for the local Catholic community, hosting several masses each Sunday and occasionally on weekdays. Its twin spires are easily visible from various vantage points in Stone Town and from the ocean, making it a notable feature of the city's landscape. In the narrow churchyard, there used to be a tall palm tree, which appeared in most pictures of the church; the tree was cut down sometime in the 2000s. As one of the most important historical buildings in Stone Town, St. Joseph's Cathedral attracts numerous visitors and continues to be a testament to Zanzibar's rich cultural and religious heritage.

Not sure if I’m the only person with an unsettling experience - my group stumbled upon the cathedral and as we were walking along the pathways, we were asked to show tickets. We refused since there was no official signage that required tickets to visit the cathedral. We kept walking inside the cathedral, only to be followed by the same person wearing a blue Tshirt claiming that we owed tickets. I asked him multiple times to show me a signage that required tickets but he did not. It is really unfortunate that there is dishonesty in such a holy place. If I was wrong, please correct me in the comment section as I wish to donate, but I was not about to support such blatant dishonesty in front of God.

We have to leave and stay together as a family, this is how we are going to build our society, economical, and social..

Zanzibar Ferry Terminal

Ferry terminal
The Zanzibar Ferry Terminal is a bustling hub located within walking distance of Stone Town, offering efficient and reliable transportation to Dar es Salaam. Despite being rowdy and less organized than its counterpart in Dar es Salaam, the terminal provides scenic views of the Indian Ocean and ensures a safe and comfortable journey. Travelers recommend booking with Azam ferry for their organized services and comfortable economy seats on vessels like the Kilimanjaro 8.
Zanzibar ferry services, particularly aboard the Kilimanjaro ferries, offer a surprisingly smooth and comfortable journey across the Indian Ocean. The onboard experience is calm, well-organized, and a welcome escape from the bustle of city life. However, the contrast becomes clear upon arrival or departure at the Dar es Salaam terminal—where the scene can be quite chaotic. The entrance and exit areas are often crowded and disorganized, with aggressive porters and minimal signage adding to the confusion. Still, once you’re past the terminal frenzy, the ferry ride itself is a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively.

They're more efficient, reliable and effective than the Air Tanzania. It's the best was to travel from Zanzibar to Dar. It's rowdy though and not as organised as the Dar es Salaam end of the terminal. It offers scenic views of the Indian ocean that are better experienced. Once the ferry moves, you can get on the deck to enjoy some airs, beautiful views of the waters and other islands along the way and good conversation with other passengers. It's also safe and has enough rooms for comfort. It has cafeteria/canteen on board. Not that it's an exit and entry point out of Zanzibar and passport control might be required.

This place is genuinely hell on earth. If you are able to get a flight still instead of using the ferry then I would urge you to do so. Scammers / criminals, posing as ‘porters’ in orange tops or hi-vis, will take your bags and extort you for money by way of tips which is corruption. If you want your bag back, you have to pay is what they insinuate. Everyone is out to try and get money off you in anyway they can. It’s a shame because it leaves a sour taste in the mouth when traveling to Tanzania/Zanzibar.

We were total of six , VIP tickets from Zanzibar to main land , 12:30 PM. Booking was online with 20$ usd each. It always seems a bit chaotic to check in and out , especially with luggage , you need the help of porters , who will bargain you for TIPs in an irritating attitude . VIP lounge is acceptable , comfy, and spacious with limited drinks offered( only coffee and tea) . The VIP cabin is good . I don’t advise less than vip for the check in , waiting area , cabin, seats luggage and toilets … In general it is an acceptable experience .

You should absolutely book first class tickets and be sure to pick them up in advance. My group was not aware that we needed to pick up our tickets from a special office quite a ways away from the terminal, so we were in panic mode when we arrived. A local helped us out and we got the tickets in time, but the rest of the group (me included) ended up waiting in the main outdoor terminal during that process. It was unbearably hot. There are no fans in the entry area and the air is stagnant, humid and hot. There are no lines when waiting to get your passport stamped. It comes down to who can push to the window and slap their passport on the counter first. Yeah, I had to do that. Feels rude but you will stand there forever if you don't. After that if you have a first class ticket, there is a special air-conditioned lounge for you. It is TOTALLY worth it. There are ample sofas and recliners everywhere. Free instant coffee is offered as well. On the boat first class get an air-conditioned cabin with comfy recliner chairs. The economy seating is stuck out in the heat. One thing that kinda annoyed me is the unorganized baggage claim situation. You need to pay attention to what baggage cart your luggage is put on. Each cart has a number, and despite what they might tell you, first class luggage is picked up in the same area as economy. There is no claim check to determine that the luggage is picked up only by the owner. It is just a mass mob of people, not at all like the airport, snatching up bags. I did get a little paranoid of someone taking my bag. I keenly watched the carts being rolled out in order to ensure that I got my bag.

History Museums
Nestled in the heart of Stone Town, Zanzibar, the People's Palace Museum, also known as Beit al-Sahel, is a captivating destination that invites visitors to step back into the 19th century. Once serving as the official residence for the Sultan and his family, this stunning palace now stands as a museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history and culture of the Zanzibar Sultanate.
I'm giving this place a 5 star rating because it really is something that you should visit while you are in Zanzibar. The history here is really fascinating. The tour guides are also great. However, this place is falling apart due to old age and the weather. I don't know who to blame: the government or the museum director? Can't they apply to UNESCO to get a grant to fix the place up? Write some letter to different embassies to get some grants. One of the last princesses married a German and became a German citizen. Maybe the Germans could help? The last Sultan of Zanzibar moved to Britain. Maybe the Brits could help. Start doing something before you completely lose your history! As an example, the House of Wonders next door just collapsed!

This historic monument lacks the preservation and conservation such a place should have. Fabrics are exposed to the elements, the furniture is run down and a shadow of what a Sultan's Palace really looked like. No effort or funds are invested in this property and in a few years, nothing will be left. Very sad. Contains loads of pictures and furniture and some old cars which tell their own stories. One of the things Stone Town is known for and the story of the Princess who married a German is interesting

This is a very interesting stop for those who are history buffs, others may be a little bored by it. This is the original palace of the sultans completed in 1832 and was home to all of them, their concubines and family until the 12th sultan fled to the UK in the Zanzibar Revolution. It has period pieces and some copies on display of trade pacts, armaments, cars, furniture (most of the display is furniture) from the sultans. A few of the stops along the way have beautiful views of the ocean. Worth a look.

Mercury's Bar is a popular waterside hangout named after the iconic Queen singer Freddie Mercury. Located near the port, it offers a picturesque setting for midday cocktails, sundowners, or evening drinks with friends. The venue features live music on Saturdays and often shows football matches on TV. While it's known for its happy hour and an impressive range of cocktails, it also serves pizzas, curries, and pasta to satisfy your appetite.
Dining at Mercury’s Bar in Stone Town was an absolute delight! From the moment we stepped in, the ambiance was warm and inviting, with a charming blend of Zanzibar’s rich history and modern touches. The location, overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean, provides a perfect backdrop for a relaxed yet memorable meal. The food was exceptional. We indulged in a variety of dishes, each bursting with fresh, local flavors. The seafood, particularly the grilled fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. The spices were expertly balanced, giving every bite an authentic taste of Zanzibar. The menu also offers a great mix of options, from traditional Swahili dishes to international favorites, all beautifully presented. Service was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. The overall atmosphere at Mercury’s Bad made it more than just a meal—it was an experience. Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner, a family outing, or just a casual meal with a view, this place delivers in every way. Highly recommend it for anyone visiting Stone Town!

Overrated with Frustrating Payment Issues** We ignored the mediocre ratings and decided to give Mercury’s Bar a chance, but unfortunately, our experience confirmed many of the complaints. **The Good:** - The view over the river is lovely and probably the best thing about this place. Freddy's Mercury's music in the background. And stable WiFi. **The Bad:** - **Slow & Disorganized Service:** Despite being a large group, the waiter struggled to take our order efficiently, cramming everything onto one sheet and causing unnecessary delays. - **Mediocre Food:** The dishes we tried were overcooked and underwhelming. "Okay" food isn’t good enough when you’re paying for a dining experience. - **Payment Nightmare:** The real frustration came when paying. Their card machine (which, as other reviews mention, *frequently* doesn’t work) failed for all of us. We had to scramble for cash, borrowing from each other. - **Suspicious Currency Exchange:** Paying in USD, EUR, or Tanzanian shillings? Be warned—they use their own unfair exchange rates, costing you more. The waiter took ages to calculate, so we had to step in. I spoke to the manager about these issues, especially the card machine problem that’s clearly a recurring issue. He nodded politely, but unless something changes, this feels like a scam to force cash payments at inflated rates. **Final Verdict:** 2/5 Nice view, but poor service, average food, and shady payment practices. Until they fix these problems (especially the card machine "conveniently" failing), I’d recommend eating elsewhere. If they improve, I’ll update my review—but for now, **be cautious**.

Harbour Indian Kitchen by Chili & Lime is a charming spot located in Zanzibar City, close to various attractions. The restaurant offers a delightful dish called Urojo, which is a flavorful soup made with lentils, potatoes, meat, and an array of spices. It's typically served with crispy bhajia and tangy tamarind sauce. Visitors have praised the fantastic food and appreciated the availability of vegan options. The owner is known for being exceptionally friendly and engaging with patrons.
A great mixed vegetable curry with a chilli cheese naan, washed down with a 500ml Safari beer. Staff were efficient and friendly. The restaurant was reasonably busy which is always a good sign. It's off the main drag so the prices are more reasonable. I would definitely recommend a visit.

We went to this restaurant twice. The first day was great — good food, friendly service — no complaints at all. That’s why we came back the next day. Big mistake. This time, we had a simple request that the waitress didn’t fully understand, so we asked (politely) if we could speak to the chef. Instead of the chef, the owner barged in and started talking to us in the most arrogant, rude, and condescending way possible. He acted like we were the problem just because we wanted to clarify something. Instead of helping, he went off about how he’s trying to “train” his staff, completely missing the point. Let me be clear: the waitresses were lovely — doing their best and very polite. The owner, on the other hand, was a complete opposite — rude, unprofessional, and full of himself. In hospitality, the owner sets the tone — and unfortunately, this one clearly thinks being rude is part of the job. Word of advice: DO NOT ask for the chef unless you want to be treated like an inconvenience. Seriously, it’s not worth it.

The best and cheapest meal we had during our Zanzibar - Safari - Moshi 16d holiday. First a bit concerned realizing this was a vegetarian restaurant (where is the butter chicken??). Emerson on Hurumzi

Hotel
African restaurant
Emerson on Hurumzi is a chic hotel located in an 1800s villa, offering vibrant quarters with some rooms providing ocean views. The rooftop restaurant provides unique panoramic sights of the Indian Ocean and surrounding mosques, making it one of the best locations in town to enjoy the exotic view of Stone Town. The hotel has a rich history, with legends linking its name to the freedom of black slaves.
I was completely blown away by this charming, one-of-a-kind hotel in Stone Town that far exceeded its 2-star rating in every possible way. What was meant to be a simple stay turned into one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. The hotel is not just a place to sleep—it’s a piece of history. Converted from a monument once owned by the British, tied to the abolition of slavery, it now stands as a semi-attached three-building hotel filled with character and soul. The architecture is absolutely captivating, full of old-world charm with a touch of Zanzibar magic. Our room was magnificent, spacious, and unlike anything you’d find in today’s trendy, cookie-cutter hotels. The bathroom, too, had its own distinct style—refreshingly unique and reflective of the local design rather than the sterile sameness of modern chains. Every corner of the hotel is decorated with thoughtful, culturally rich details that give it life and authenticity. The staff? Incredible. Truly some of the warmest, most helpful people we’ve encountered. They went above and beyond, not only in their hospitality but in arranging tours for us at very reasonable prices—we even cross-checked them online and found their rates to be more than fair. And then there’s the rooftop restaurant. Hands down one of the best places to eat in Stone Town, and for good reason. The food was excellent, and the view from the rooftop patio was nothing short of spectacular. Whether for breakfast or a sunset dinner, it was always a highlight. Overall, this hotel may only be rated two stars, but it delivered a five-star experience from start to finish. If you’re looking for a place with character, history, amazing service, and incredible views, this is it.

We just had dinner on the rooftop for our final night in Zanzibar, but it was the perfect experience to cap off our honeymoon. The view from the rooftop is magical - especially watching the sun go down and hearing the call to prayer. The dining experience is very unique and intimate, and while the food wasn’t our absolute favorite, the live music, singing, and location made it 100% worth it. The staff at the hotel and restaurant were also very kind of helpful, ensuring we were able to leave promptly at 8:15 for our flight.

We did the evening rooftop dinner experience. The food was nice enough and the views were okay, but the presentation and building was beautiful and the hotel staff so helpful. We were able to leave out luggage at the hotel while we explored the town and they helped us arrange a taxi to the airport afterwards. I understand as a hotel the services might be lacking, but as an experience it's certainly worth considering.

What a wonderful hotel! We were made so welcome from the minute we arrived. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the beautiful Pavillion room, we absolutely loved it. The hotel location is perfect for exploring Stone Town. Highly, highly recommended 😍

Eclectic, historical hotel located in the midst of old Stone Town. Outstanding service provided by employees with varying English-speaking capabilities. All extremely friendly and welcoming. This is a historical but beautiful building. WARNING: There are NO elevators, our air-conditioner worked only occasionally and you have to hold a button to keep your shower on; this is not a "modern" hotel. We had a private balcony for breakfast, however, which was beautiful. The room was lovely and very well attended to. Being on the west side of the island was nice as there was more to see and it was easy to take a day trip to the beach and go snorkeling. Stay on the east side if all you want is beach R & R. All in all a lovely historic hotel.

Emerson on Hurumzi is a warm, authentic experience. We were greeted by the General Manager who arranged a city tour, restaurant reservations, an excursion to the spice farm and saw that we had a taxi to the airport for a very early flight. The staff was always helpful and friendly and the food was excellent. This is an historic building with a charm all its own. That said, understand that the streets are too narrow for cars so you will have a porter carry your luggage a short distance from the taxi. There is no lift/elevator but the staff handles all your luggage. Our stay was a welcome departure from chain hotels and an immersion in a rich culture,

What an amazing place. Due to a flight cancellation we got not only to spend an extra night in this amazing hotel, but also the privilege of seeing three of their amazing rooms. On arrival we were told that we could either do all 3 nights in a different room to the one which we had booked, or do two in the original room and then the last in another room. We were then shown the options and got to choose, which I thought was a really nice touch, and also totally necessary as none of the three rooms that we saw were even remotely similar. So long as you have good mobility (there are steep stairs and no elevator) you will not be disappointed with a stay here. The uniqueness of every room is breathtaking, the staff absolutely amazing and the dinner on the rooftop accompanied with traditional music was outstanding. They provide you with all the water you want, natural mosquito repellent (although we didn't need it in the hotel) and will even bring breakfast to your room if requested. My husband found the beds way to hard, he mentioned it to them and that night we had a mattress topper added during the turndown service (at which time they also close all the shutters and roll down the mosquito net over the bed). One thing to bear in mind other than the stairs is that there is also a city tax to stay here, which is quite expensive, but I found this hotel worth every penny. Really a 10 out of 10 in every way.

Ate dinner and was amazed by the rooftop atmosphere. Listening to the mosques calling to prayer while experiencing high end food and drink overlooking the ocean. Cant recreate this memory.

Seafood restaurant
Cape Town Fish Market is a seafood restaurant situated on the seafront in Forodhani. The fresh and beautifully prepared seafood is a main attraction, with the wine list satisfactory. The music was lovely, and all in all an enjoyable evening was had. This restaurant would be ideal for someone looking for a romantic setting while enjoying some excellent seafood. Prices are reasonable given the quality of service and food.
Favorite restaurant in stone town! Adam was a great server. Thomas was so helpful and for the food out so fast for our large and hungry tour group! This was a great lunch. We’ve been many times and will continue to come back!! Absolutely love the popcorn shrimp! Highly recommend!!

Cape Town Fish Market never disappoints! The food is always fresh and very tasty. I highly recommend the chicken schnitzel and the fish & chips – they’re always on point. The garlic bread is a great side, and the passion fruit juice is refreshing and perfect to go with the meal. Definitely a spot worth visiting if you want good food and great flavors!

Really nice place with great food. After two weeks of sub-par food in Tanzania this was a great find. Even if we sticked to our familiar cuisine. Everything was delicious and together with the view and the fab service, we were very pleased.

Food was plentiful and really tasty. We had the chicken wings and salmon grande for starters, then a sharing platter, all very good but sadly could not finish. Beautiful setting and great to have live music whilst we ate, although a little quieter would have been better. Such a lovely evening, thank you Thomas for your good service 😀.

Really nice atmosphere and staff was amazing, especially Juma! We had a great time and the food was great. Good variety of beers. We were not disappointed for being here 3 times.

Honestly 10/10. This is a gem in Zanzibar that everyone should visit. Live music every night, great service, food, and ambiance! I can't find a single complaint. Prices are moderate but most definitely worth it. We were always treated well whenever we visited, it made us feel very welcome. Don't miss out.

We went there because it got “good reputation “, one of our family members also went the one in South Africa. Food is very disappointing. Here are the reasons: 1) curry crab. As a famous palace for spice, also famous for the curry. Even a local lady can cook a very good curry. The curry is sour, can not taste the balance of all spices. The acid flavour cover all of it. Crab is frozen crab. Rice come with the curry is average. We stayed in a Airbnb house in Jambiamni beach, our house chef used a local rice for us, it’s much better than this. 2) We have a season platter, including: fish/prawn/mussel/calamari/squid. Only the fish and prawn are good. Calamari is hard and not much taste… my kid loves fried calamari, she got one bite and doesn’t eat it at all. 3) Sushi, yes… No picture… check even the reviews is good, check well the pictures they share… you can see the sushi rice is compressed together… and fish sushi not really can taste the “fish”. 4) For average person USD50-100/ person ( one main food and drink), they give you disposable chopsticks… food and this chopsticks are all telling me, they are “fast food”. For the price they charge, this is something can not accept. You will find so many other places in Zanzibar get much better food and good vibes. At the end, I only can say the staffs are nice. But food is so disappointing. I am sorry to leave this review. But I got real shock after the dinner….
