Very nice hotel, pretty well situated when spending few nights in the area (and less expensive as well than others). Beautiful view over the lake and next to the craters' trail. Food is quite expensive but very good (no small portions). Our small twin bedroom was enough for us and had clean private bathroom. Breakfast was included and great!
Common areas are nice but the rooms are on the smaller scale. Sink in the bathroom was so tiny that it was very difficult to wash my face. Pillows were way too flat and had zero support. Breakfast was nice but same as everywhere else in Iceland. Dinner had a normal Icelandic price tag but don’t order the lasagna or mushroom soup.
Not a big room, but what a view. We were lucky to have a room with a view on the lake and the sheep walking in front of our window outside. Nice breakfast and dinner, the room where you eat has a great view. Only the smell from the water in the shower wasn't pleasurable, but hey say you have this at more places in this area because of the sulfur.

Know before you go

  • Consider visiting during early June for potentially lower rates
  • If on a budget, there's a grocery store in town for more affordable dining options
  • Expect sulfur smell in water due to geothermal activity around the lake - common in this area
  • Ventilate bathroom after showering to prevent musty smells in small bathrooms

Reviews

Hótel Gígur by Keahotels offers a beautiful view over the lake and is conveniently located next to the craters' trail. Guests appreciate the good food, especially breakfast, although dinner prices can be high. While some mention small rooms with limited amenities like tiny sinks and flat pillows, others highlight the exceptional views from their rooms. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the area, providing a pleasant stay overall despite some room size concerns.

The view is beautiful, the staff very friendly (and they know a lot about the area) and the breakfast is good. But the rooms are tiny and smell of eggs (especially the bathroom) and I don't like that you only get one room key. Also we weren't allowed to sit in the restaurant (only the small area next to it) because they waited for a group (they only filled 2 out of 10 tables).

Great stay for the value, ignore the haters. I'm a pilot and live in hotels half of my life. I stayed early June, so perhaps it was an early season rate, but for $140 USD I have no complaints. The room was small but adequate, the bathroom was clean and had newer amenities, the radiator controls worked, and the view is exceptional, especially in the restaurant. The restaurant offers a dinner items ranging from US$30 to US$100, typical of Icelandic restaurants. If you are looking to eat on a budget there is a grocery in town with limited hours. Yes, the water had a smell to it due to hydrogen sulfide in the ground water, but so does every location around the lake, it is an active geothermal area. Yes, the bathroom is small so if you take a long shower and don't let it vent it *could* smell musty after a while... but this was not my experience.
