First time checking out Café De Hong Kong and I already can’t wait to come back! I’d heard it gets busy, and that’s no joke—there are no reservations, so be sure to join the waitlist before heading over. The place is quite small, which adds to its charm, but also means it fills up quickly. Once inside, I was immediately hit with that nostalgic Hong Kong café vibe—lively, fast-paced, and bustling with energy. It really felt like a little slice of HK tucked away in the city.
The service was decent, though definitely on the brisker side. I think the staff are just doing their best to keep up with the flow, so while they aren’t overly chatty or lingering at tables, everything came out quickly and efficiently. The vibe is more about keeping things moving than creating a drawn-out dining experience, which I actually didn’t mind at all given how busy it was.
The menu is what truly impressed me. There’s a huge variety of dishes, and everything looked tempting. I ended up ordering the Classic French Toast, the Street Appetizer Platter, Ginger Scallion Chicken Lo Mein with thick egg noodles, and the House Style Fried Rice. Every single dish delivered on flavour. The lo mein stood out with its perfectly chewy noodles and rich, savoury ginger scallion flavour. The French toast was decadent, buttery and filling, and the appetizer platter was a fun mix of street-style bites that added a playful start to the meal. The House Style Fried Rice was flavourful, although I did find it a bit on the salty side for my taste—but not enough to stop me from enjoying it.
To drink, I went with an iced Hong Kong-style milk tea and my mom got the hot lemon tea. Both were decent and refreshing in their own way, though the food definitely stole the show. What really blew me away was the portion size—everything was incredibly generous, and I had plenty left to take home. Even with all that food and two drinks, the bill came out to under $50 after tax, which blew my mind especially in this economy.
Overall, Café De Hong Kong is a spot I’ll absolutely be returning to. Between the vibrant atmosphere, the flavour-packed food, and the unbeatable value, it’s a gem for anyone craving Hong Kong comfort eats. I’m already looking forward to trying more from their menu next time.
