The Jacobean Pub at Rogerthorpe Manor: Where History Meets Gravy (and Excellent Pints) 🍺🍖
Tucked inside the beautiful Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel, The Jacobean Pub delivers the full British pub experience—but with better architecture and posher chairs. We stopped by for dinner and can confirm: this place knows its way around a pint and a proper plate of comfort food.
The Setting: Old-World Charm With a Side of Chips 🏰
Set in the grounds of a manor that looks like it could double as the backdrop to a period drama, the Jacobean Pub manages to be cosy and grand all at once. Think oak beams, low ceilings, warm lighting, and the comforting scent of good food wafting from the kitchen. It’s the kind of place where you instantly relax, whether you’re in walking boots, wedding attire, or just after a pint and a pie.
The Drinks: A Pint of Perfection 🍺
We kicked things off with a round of Shipyard IPA, and it did not disappoint. Crisp, hoppy, and gloriously refreshing, it was the perfect pairing for the hearty plates ahead. Bonus points for being served just cold enough to be crisp, but not so cold you lose the flavour—a fine art many pubs have yet to master.
The Food: A Feast Fit for Manor Folk 🍽️
We went in with high hopes and left full, happy, and a bit jealous of whoever gets to eat there next.
• Slow Roasted Belly Pork: Melt-in-your-mouth tender with a cracking bit of crackling and a gravy so good we considered asking for a jug to take home.
• Hunter’s Chicken: A proper classic—juicy chicken breast, smoky bacon, a generous layer of BBQ sauce and cheese—it was the pub food version of a warm hug.
• Gammon Steak: Big, bold, and beautifully cooked. Served with the traditional pineapple AND egg (because life is about balance), it was salty, satisfying, and the plate was wiped clean with zero regrets.
• Vegan Cumberland Sausage & Mash: Even the non-vegans at the table were sneaking forkfuls. Great texture, flavour-packed, and the mash was buttery (well, butter-free) and smooth as silk. Proof that plant-based can absolutely hold its own on the pub menu.
Portions were hearty, presentation was spot on, and everything tasted fresh, well-seasoned, and genuinely delicious.
The Service: Friendly, Fast & On Point 👏
The staff were attentive without hovering, friendly without being over-the-top, and fast without rushing us—the dream pub service trifecta. Special shoutout to the team for making everything feel easy and relaxed, even with a busy service.
The Verdict: A Proper Pub with Food Worth Travelling For ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Jacobean Pub at Rogerthorpe Manor hits every note a great pub should: historic charm, great drinks, generous portions of proper British grub, and a team that makes you feel right at home.
Five stars—plus an extra one for that gravy, which we’re still thinking about.
