Absolutely stunning location. The hike is worth every minute for the scenery you are surrounded by the whole way. Visited in mid summer and even though the general temperature was 37C, in the gorge with the river it was very cool and enjoyable.
Pictures can never do this place justice. One of a kind.
Beautiful place with a distinct blue-green hue to the water. The path isn't fully paved, needing to walk over boulders and some stone steps, which can get slippery if wet. Some paths may be closed, probably due to landslides from the precariously overhanging boulders. Walk to uryu falls(probably the highlight of the area) takes about 10 minutes. Visiting all the areas would take closer to 1.5 hours total.
An exceptionally picturesque forest walk with good walking tracks for sturdy shoes. Cute kiosks to serve delicious refreshments as well.

Stopped in at the Nakatsu Valley on the way from Kotchi to Matsuyama. Did the hike through the valley to Uryu Falls and very glad I did. Well worth the short hike.
There is no cost to hiking the valley and plenty of free parking available as well.
It's a nice place that locals like to visit for a picnic with a decent hike available if you want to see more of the gorge and waterfalls. Bring appropriate clothing and a towel if you want to jump in the water - looks very clean and has that distinctive blue colour.
It depends on when you visit! We've compiled data from NASA on what the weather is like in Kumakogen-cho for each month of the year: see the links below for more information.
