We really enjoyed ourselves on the Christmas Train! If you are somewhat local, you can’t miss it! We went on a Sunday at 11am. It was real cold but we did fine in the open air car (there are 2) with all of our layers. The train ride is about 30 mins. Once in Sumpter at The Depot, some of our kids played outside in the snow while a few waited in line to see Santa. It was a long wait but Santa gave each group 5+ minutes of undivided attention. Snacks were cookies, donuts, candy, and cuties. Cocoa table was packed but we just waited and it was fine. Cute little picture taking setup around back. Then 30 mins back on the train. Our kids are age 3-13 years and they all had fun!! Staff was friendly and funny on the train 🚂
We had an amazing train ride for my son’s birthday. The weather was perfect, the train ride was just the right length with beautiful scenery. We can’t wait to come back again for a train robbery next time.
Great experience riding the Sumpter Valley Railroad. Every volunteer staff member was helpful, friendly, and made our trip fun. We were lucky/fortunate to get to ride in the engine with Engineer John. Would highly recommend riding the train. We will be making this trip again this next summer.

The Sumpter Depot & Gift Shop offers a delightful experience for visitors, especially families with kids. The Christmas Train is a highlight, providing a scenic ride with friendly staff and fun activities like meeting Santa and enjoying snacks. The depot itself is charming, with beautiful merchandise in the gift shop area. Visitors also appreciate the educational aspect of the train ride, learning about the history of SVRR and exploring attractions like a renovated dredge in Sumpter.

It was closed, we missed it being open by a few days. Next time we will chech their schedule first. Walking about the rail yard was fun. If you do walk the yard, use common sense as there are multiple hazards about.
