We first had lunch at the picnic area, noticing how high the water had been from the recent floods, then proceeded to do the 5.5km loop walk, this was a really nice walk, not too hard & plenty to look at.
Great track, mostly level easy walking trail. I would recommend starting from the blue bbq water site first for the 5.5km loop due to the stairs. That way you are always walking down and the along. Great views along the path. We spotted kangaroos, echinaceas and a few snakes but no koalas 😞
A nice spot for a picnic or a walk. Unfortunately the picnic table areas were being sprayed for weeds when we visited and we found it hard to find a comfortable spot in the shade. A few people were swimming. The water looked a bit grey to me. I talked to the park ranger who was doing the spraying. He told me that 10 years or more ago Armidale’s treated sewerage used to be put into the river. He said he would be happy to swim in the river now. There’s a pit toilet. No bins. Be prepared to take all your rubbish home. I had no mobile phone reception here.

Gara Gorge in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park offers a mix of experiences for visitors. The trail provides easy walking with great views, kangaroo sightings, and diverse landscapes including dry bushland, rainforest, and the stunning gorge itself. Hikers are advised to wear hiking boots due to rough terrain at times. The area features picnic spots but may have limited shade due to weed spraying activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the river which has improved water quality over the years according to a park ranger on-site.

This is one of the most beautiful walks I've ever been on. During our two hour trip, the surrounding landscape alternated between dry bushland, rainforest and the stunning gorge. Plus, wooden walkways and bridges stretched around mossy cliffs. It was rough going at times, so hiking boots are a must. Overall, the trip was well-worth the effort, though! You can also explore the nearby pools at the beginning of the trail.

Serene camping area and breathtaking views of the waterfall and permanent pool down below. 7 kilometres of rough gravle road to drive through, so be mindful of your vehicle conditions.
