Absolutely breathtaking views! The drive was long and boring since there’s not much else out there but definitely worth the beauty you end up at. We went Memorial Day weekend so it was very busy at the main area so we pulled up to the other area where there was a lot less people for some better, stranger free pictures
One of the best moments during our road trip, we wanted so much to get here and just stand on the Forrest Gump Point to enjoy the view. Amazing feeling! Some drivers are a bit nervous when you sit too long in the middle of the street, but it is worth to stay a little longer to make the wallpaper photo of your life:)
You drive a ways with no vehicle in front or behind you thinking you & your group might be the only ones but when you make that last turn & look in the distance, you can see more people than you expect. I heard the early morning (sunrise) is the best time when the foot traffic is low, but again it is a hit or miss on what days may be favorable. Only giving a low star review because everyone didn’t just take a picture & then get out of the way, they stayed for a long time. We only took a few pictures then left. I was able to edit the photos partially but the videos we took i am unable to remove the people in the background. It’s nice, but just be aware of extra people around. Next time we visit, i will definitely arrive before the sun rises.

Know before you go

  • Visit early in the day or during weekdays to avoid crowds and traffic hazards
  • Be cautious when taking photos near the active highway; prioritize safety over getting the perfect shot
  • Explore both sides of Highway 163 for different photo opportunities - Utah side offers pullouts while Arizona side has tribal land without pullouts

Reviews

Forrest Gump Point, located on Highway 163 in Monument Valley, is a must-see for movie buffs and nature enthusiasts alike. Visitors rave about the stunning views of the red rock formations and wide open skies that served as the backdrop for Forrest Gump's iconic run in the movie. The energy at this spot is palpable, with people recreating scenes from the film and taking photos despite the active highway nearby. While there is no exact marker for where Forrest stopped running, a sign one mile away signals its proximity. Despite some safety concerns due to traffic and crowds, travelers find this location well worth a stop for its beauty and cinematic significance.

We drove from Arizona to see the Momument Valley and did not know of this exact location called Forrest Gump Point. We were struggling to find the exact famous view, our patience was paid off when we drove pass this monument to the Utah side. It was so beautiful. Be careful of coming cars, the road is straight so you can easily see cars coming from both sides. When you see there is no cars coming in a long distance, and it’s safe to do so, go and take your pics with this iconic road.

This now iconic location is approximately 7 miles from the small town of Mexican Hat, Utah. Here is where you will be able to take stunning photos of Monument Valley, unfortunately for us, we drove right into a massive sandstorm, which lasted all day. This place can get awfully busy with crowds of visitors all trying to get that perfect photo in the middle of the road. Please, watch yourself if you are running out into the roadway, since people fly down this road. There is a pull-out further south along the east side of the road.
