Osshin-ji Temple

(Translated by Google) Also known as Kagamishima Kobo, the temple was founded by Gyoki Bodhisattva, and the current temple layout was apparently established by Kobo Daishi Kukai. From Gifu Station, take the Gifu Takatomi Line bus to Kagamishima Kobo-mae, or take a taxi. This was my second visit, having been the first in 12 years, but it seemed that not much had changed. The main hall, the "Hobutsuden," enshrines the principal statues of Important Cultural Properties: Thousand-Armed Kannon, Bishamonten, and Idaten. Unfortunately, Thousand-Armed Kannon and Idaten can only be viewed through the screen doors of the shrine, but there will be an exhibition from April 21st to 23rd, and these doors will be opened. Nevertheless, the Thousand-Armed Kannon is a serene statue typical of the late Heian period, while the Idaten is stunningly sculpted in Kamakura-style armor and clothing, and his boyish face is a sight to behold. The only Bishamonten available for viewing is the "Kurama-dera-style Bishamonten," with his right hand on his hip. Same-day viewing is possible, but it's recommended to make a reservation. There are many goshuin (temple stamps), but we recommend the three stamps with portraits of the principal image, Bishamonten, and Idaten (300 yen each). Other stamps include one with a portrait of Acala by Domoto Insho. The admission fee, which includes one of the three stamps, is 500 yen. Photography is prohibited in the Hobutsuden (Hobutsuden Hall), but photos of the three Buddha statues in the hall, purchased 12 years ago, are still available for purchase. Other attractions within the temple grounds include a golden statue of Kobo Daishi and other Buddhas, as well as the grave of Ichijo Kaneyoshi's wife, Higashi no Onkata.
