This is a lovely area, part of the greater Lake Myvatn area. I had really been looking forward to our visit on the tour because the area is renowned for its bird life and scenery. The pseudo craters are pretty unusual and add an interesting look and feel to the area. I did the longer walk around the entire complex in a bit more than one hour. As a walk alone, it would have been easy but I was also focused on trying to get photos of the birds on all sides so I had to hustle in between photos. The day was beautiful and the experience was really enjoyable. Wish I'd had more time!
One of the most beautiful locations I’ve seen in my years of travelling. Really pretty area, epic mountains and lava domes surrounding a flat, lava filled valley with a beautiful lake in the centre and the pseudo craters on one side. It’s a very relaxing place and the area needs a coupe of days to explore at least.
Beautiful but windy place! Great for views and birdwatching - we saw baby ducks during our visit
The visitor center nearby was super helpful in sharing sightseeing spots and trails in the area. The ice cream shop across the street (Skútaís) is amazing!

Lovely walk through the pseudocraters with a great view of Lake Myvatn. We did the smaller loop, which took about 25 minutes, which included stops for photos. The landscape is unique and beautiful. We went first thing in the morning (in July) and there were lots of bugs out - constantly had to swat them away. But we expected bugs in this region. If it wasn’t for the bugs, I may have done the longer walk. Definitely worth the visit.
Nice little roadside exhibit. Privately operated and not a lot of info about the science of what is happening but a worthwhile stop if it is on the way to something else. Be aware there isn’t a wc.
