Once-Charming, Now Tired and Neglected — Deeply Disappointing Stay: My partner and I recently stayed at this hotel during what was meant to be a special getaway in beautiful Monterey. Unfortunately, our experience at the hotel was the low point of an otherwise fantastic trip.
From the moment we arrived, the tone was set. The front desk staff couldn’t manage basic hospitality — no eye contact, no warmth, and no offer to hold our bags properly while we waited a mere 30 minutes for check-in. When we returned at 4 p.m., the check-in process was awkward and indifferent. We understand being busy, but professionalism shouldn’t evaporate because a tour group has arrived.
The real disappointment, however, was the room itself — a time capsule from the late 1990s, clearly untouched by any meaningful renovation in decades.
Bathroom:
• The shower barely worked — water flowed equally from the faucet and showerhead, leaving weak pressure and poor drainage that left several inches of standing water.
• The skylight above appeared filthy, possibly moldy.
• A handrail was detached from the wall, and a random phone jack was left exposed — a relic of another century.
• Rust surrounded the toilet bolts, and the floor bore stains from leaks. Showed lack of attention to cleanliness n safety.
• The ancient wall heater barely functioned, and the thermostat in the main room did absolutely nothing.
Room & Amenities:
• No air conditioning, no USB outlets, no meaningful storage (a handful of hangers and three small drawers for a 4-night stay).
• The vanity was placed outside the bathroom, directly next to the entry door — not exactly a private or romantic setup.
• The fireplace instructions suggested using long matches, but only damp paper matchbooks were provided — a dangerous oversight that caused a brief but alarming gas flare.
• The patio, once perhaps a pleasant spot, was filthy and neglected, with bird droppings on the table and a “view” of neighboring trash bins.
• No insulation or sound proofing. We could hear every sound outside our room as it passed by our door.
Breakfast & Common Areas:
The complimentary breakfast was unremarkable — basic, but fine. What wasn’t fine was the large, silent TV locked on a political news channel, with no remote or control available. Like much of this hotel, it felt abandoned halfway through an idea.
We left each morning to explore the stunning beauty of Monterey and Carmel — and returned each evening to sigh at how out of date and poorly maintained this property has become. It’s sad, really. There’s potential here: a great location, solid bones, and once-charming design. But potential doesn’t make up for decades of neglect.
If this hotel once had a fine reputation, it’s long gone now. Until ownership invests in a full renovation and retrains the staff on basic hospitality, I cannot recommend it. For the price we paid, it should have been a comfortable, romantic base for our adventures — not an exercise in lowered expectations.
