Not sure about the below reviews, but I visited today and not a single smell of smoke. The lady who served me was friendly and told me about the stones and we talked about the rough opals which we made a deal on. If I came back i definitely would visit this place again, I’ve been to all the opal dealers in town and this was the only place I felt comfortable and not pressured into buying anything. Ultimately this is the only place I have bought something! Thanks again
Nice place from the outside.
As soon as you walk in you smell smoke (the owner smokes inside).
Lady very rude and hostile! There are better places in town!
What a great little place. My son and I went decided to have a quick look after we left the IGA. The owner was so welcoming and helpful. Ended up chatting for 45 minutes. Gave my son a free opal and other gifts. Great spot, worth the look!

Visit during off-peak hours to avoid crowds and potentially have more personalized attention from staff
Be cautious of aggressive sales tactics reported by some visitors; consider exploring other shops in the area for opal purchases
If sensitive to smoke smells, be aware that some reviewers noted a strong cigarette odor inside The Opal Bug
Check COVID-19 safety measures before visiting as there were concerns raised about contact tracing procedures at the shop
Reviews
The Opal Bug in Coober Pedy has received mixed reviews from visitors. While some praise the owner for being welcoming and generous, offering free opals and gifts, others have criticized the shop for its rude staff, aggressive sales tactics, and unpleasant smoking smell inside. Some reviewers also mentioned concerns about the treatment of animals on-site and strange COVID-19 contact tracing procedures. Despite these negative aspects, there are mentions of interesting art pieces displayed outside the shop and a famous opal-colored Volkswagen Beetle that attracts visitors.

Horrible lady inside!! DO NOT GO HERE!
Place stinks like smoke, owner was extremely rude and dismissive. Never met a lady so rude in my life, didn’t try to help at all. Was almost as if we were a burden looking around the shop.
Should be calling RSPCA, owner has multiple dogs locked up in small cages
