On June 19, we spent about 4.5 hours travelling from Harbin to Qiqihar just to catch the 2 PM feeding of the Red-Crowned Cranes at Zhalong Wetland. It was a really hot and sunny day, and the place was packed with tourists all hoping to see the same thing.
Since our tour bus could only park at the entrance, we had to walk quite a distance under the sun to get inside. There was also a short boat ride where they showed us a big painted, man-made crane egg — not quite the real thing, but interesting enough — before we finally reached the crane viewing spot.
When it was time, we only got a few seconds to see the cranes fly overhead — beautiful, but over so fast! After that, we were guided to walk to the museum, where we saw displays of different crane species and other animals. We also went up to the top floor to enjoy a nice view overlooking the Zhalong Wetland.
Even though it was hot, crowded, and the crane sighting was super quick, it still felt worth the long trip to see these amazing birds in their home, even for just a moment.
