Ruins of a hilltop castle built in the 14th century at the site of even older fortifications.

Very well manteined. It's interesting to stroll around the ruins and admire the cleverness of Roman's civilization in making such awesome venues
Really nice stroll throughout the castle ruins. It’s not very big and took about an hour at a very leisurely pace. Nevertheless, the ruins afford some really nice views of Valkenburg and its surroundings. Dog friendly! Kiosk is a self-pay machine with an automated entry, there is no attendant. Visit costs 10.50 euros.
Valkenburg was a beautiful, and very touristy, little town and I wish we'd spent longer there but poor research on the part of our travel planner meant we couldn't! The town was so touristy that the car park was full so we had to sit and wait at the barrier until someone came out. We visited the castle which looked like it was magnificent at one time and certainly covered a large area but was slighted in the 17th century and then steadily plundered for stone by house builders in the town. Now it was a hugely popular family destination and when we visited there was some living history displays as well as archery and some games. We bought a combined ticket with the Velvet Caves.
I visited here yesterday. Can see nice view of city. Poor display of information.
Nicest medieval castle i’ve seen in the Netherlands. Differently from usual, it is built in stone and on top of a hill. From there you can watch a beautiful landscape on the village of Valkenburg and the sweet hills of Limburg, not typical dutch view, it resembles more germany or Luxembourg than Holland. You can get a combined ticket with the caves that is free with the Museum Kaart
It was a great place to see the city from above. I used my museum card to enter the ruins
Only a few kilometers from Valkenburg, and such a beautiful castle and walking area. Totally worth the excursion for a one-night romantic getaway.
Spent a very fun morning exploring here. The entire thing is self service, from buying the tickets at the automated machine to the self guided walking tour. Lots of space to spread out and explore, and various ways around. Super interesting history and we loved the "depictions" of what the castle would have looked like during its heyday. Definitely recommend. Advisory: while there was an elevator to get to the entrance level, the walking paths didn't seem very wheelchair or stroller friendly.

We took the train in the cave and it was great. The guide had a lot of knowledge and explained everything we saw. Even the nuclear bomb shelter from the cold war. It was very interesting.
Wow, the cave itself is absolutely magical during the Christmas markets, it felt lovely to walk through especially towards the end of the market. The bad points : entrance was a nightmare with hoards of elderly coach trippers, the majority of the stalls sold mass produced junk rather than the hand made gifts we expected, entrance fee was 9euro per person, per cave (we do understand the reasoning for an entrance fee but seeing the quantity of visitors in just 2 hours of 1 day of the 6 week event is sickening!). I have still given the cave itself 4* because it truly is a great place to visit and after speaking to the staff we'd be inclined to visit at another time of year. The very last stall of the market you can buy personalised gifts of the stone from the caves, I wonder if this is there all year, I highly recommend.
It’s pretty cold in the grotten. So make sure to bring a jacket/ shawl when you are visiting. The temperature was 12 degrees Celsius inside, while it was 22 degrees that day outside
The Gemeentegrot Christmas Market is definitely one of the most unique Christmas markets I have visited, simply because it takes place inside a historic cave. The cave is filled with beautifully decorated paths and lamps that create a festive and warm atmosphere. The lighting is stunning, and there are plenty of Christmas themed decorations, ornaments, and gifts on display throughout the market. The focus here is more on the shopping experience and the enchanting cave setting than on traditional festive food and drink. Food and drink options are limited, so it does not have the same cozy, culinary atmosphere as some other Christmas markets.
Visited on the very first day of this season! If you’ve never been here before, then it’s definitely a NO-BRAINER to visit! experience Christmas festivities in a cave set up, which is pretty unique. the cave has a pleasant cool temperature, and this one is more lively that the velvet cave. if you’re only looking for exploring and not shopping, you can easily cover this in an hour. But in most cases you’ll find yourself invested in purchasing something. Compared to Amsterdam, the prices of souvenirs aren’t too bad (some of them were even slightly cheaper). Will make a full video of my complete experience and upload it on my YouTube. Hope you find me there 👋 🎥 Pro tip: visit on weekdays, or weekend mornings. I was lucky with the crowd since i was one of the first few visitors in the cave since I visited the very first day.
This was a very unique experience but I was let down by the lack of homemade and quality Christmas decorations. It felt like most of the stuff being sold was just from action. I still enjoyed the experience and the atmosphere.
Visited the Christmas market. A very fun experience. Definitely worth the money. Loved the art pieces for sale inside. Decorations were top notch. Drove all the way from Amsterdam for this and enjoyed my day. Planned to spend around an hour there but ended up spending almost 3 hours. All the photo spots are really nice. Definitely recommended. I have attached the picture of the painting we got.
I'm writing this as a comparison of Xmas markets between the two caves here in Valkenburg. Despite poor explanations on their site, there *are* only 2 markets, Velvet and Municipal, though it can seem like there's more. I went last year to Municipal and this year to Velvet. First off, this cave is more busy and lively, and definitely bigger. There's more photo opportunities with Christmasy things than in Velvet. There's also much more food to try and more places serving things to eat/drink. That honestly lacked almost entirely in Velvet. There seems to be more history in the smaller cave that you can still view even during Christmas markets, but with little information, and many of the paintings covered up. However, this was very very busy, and sometimes even feeling like cattle, being shoulder to shoulder with people. It is much bigger too, so just means that much more full. There are also a lot more gimmicky or low-quality things to buy here. I still liked this more because of the ambiance, music, and liveliness in comparison to Velvet, but I think on a busier day Velvet might feel nicer and less empty. The general quality of trinkets there is better (though mostly same vendors, just less of them) and the wall murals are pensive, but no samplings/food/drink, and much less decoration. It's a shame that they require different tickets for each that you can't go into both, but if you've seen one you definitely don't need to go to the other. I will admit that it was very difficult with the crowds in Municipal on a weekend though, so if you can only go on a weekend, go to Velvet, and go to Municipal if you can on a weekday.

Former miners lead underground tours of coal mine with displays of equipment, film & anecdotes.
Slide 1 of 8
I am an old underground miner from Australia and thoroughly enjoyed this tourist mine. It's a credit to those who run and look after it
What an absolute horrible person. They charge 5 euro for parking and I was offended the moment I drove in. After this he wanted me to park in a specific place. I said I was afraid it would damage my car, because my tire would be at a curb. Then he asked if I had learned how to drive and I should have had my driving license. Upon arrival in the cave, the second man was also unpleasant and he let us wait 15 minutes! (He wasnt helping other costumers or doing someting serious, it was his break🙃). So we went too the cave next to it. (Small tip... he is from his away from his desk most of the time... so you can sneak in... cause these people dont deserve the money.)
The place was wonderful it was actually like I was in a real coal mine the guide-Robert was very polite and he knew that we don't speak Dutch but he tried his best to explain us the tour in English and the cashier was nice and helpful too
It was a shame that this "mine" is advertised as last mine in The Netherlands. It's a replica but they make it sound like an actual mine. You should rename it to museum/educational tour instead of last mine. Very misleading. Won't recommend going here.
An educational tour of what coal mines were like in the Netherlands. Keep in mind that this is not a real mine, this is just a replica of what it used to look like. First you will watch a short movie about the history and then a guide will show you around and explain things.
Took almost 45 minutes longer then the time that was mentioned. We had a tour of about 2 hours, it was just too long. The group was too big, some would always stand in the back and couldnt see. Story the guide told wasnt really the best. We didnt get the point of most of what he was saying. He made a bunch of inappropriate jokes eventhough there were also children there. A bunch of the group left after half an hour and the other half of the group wished they did.
Great way to learn about how life was working in the mines. We got the impression the guides are volunteers, but still the entrance fee is quite high + 5€ parking fee. Possible to buy combiticket for Mergelrijk
The tour guide is knowledgeable and humorous, makes the tour a great experience.

I got a jackpot so that alone made it awesome. Live music being played and the whole casino was buzzing. Great place to hangout with friends for drinks, meals, atmosphere, even if you are not gambling.
This is regarding the online casino, I really hope someone from the gaming commission sees this review and investigates this site. Absolutely the worst online casino ive played, If you really want to lose money then this is the site, slot machines are screwed down like hell!!! I play exactly same games on other sites with very good results. This site is basically legally robbing you!! Unfortunately I have to give it a star, because I cant write a review!!! So take that star away, not worth one star!!! All replies and opinions are welcome.
These guys at the entrance are so rude, jealous and not friendly. Never ever try go play there. Double standard policy os their second name. These people don’t know about service. They stopped us because they were chatting during working shift and was tryting to find any reason not to allow to enter. Because of sneakers. The whole casino players in sportswear but ok, we go another one. Thanks God there are a lot of places welcoming us. Good luck
As usual a pizza banger Thay let you refill 👏🏼👏🏼 Place has a beautiful view ,
Neat plesent staff, great choice of games to win some money.
The staff here are professional, friendly, helpful and first class. From when you first step in and are greeted with the smiling welcoming ladies on reception to venturing onto the casino floor and sampling the poker room downstairs the staff are all polite, helpful and friendly. I was playing in the WPT Poker event and the Buffet was first class. I am yet to sample the full menu but I am assured the food is excellent and it will be if the buffet is anything to go by. Would recommend this place for a good night out.
The overhauled restaurant in this casino is a great place for a nice diner. Perfect view over the valley.
Very nice casino, live music playing through the evening. Good variety of drinks and food available.

Museum
Historic Sites
Underground replica Roman burial chambers in a quarry with frescoes & statues, open since 1910.
Slide 1 of 8
This is an interesting visit. The site is only accessible through a one hour guided tour, in Dutch. It’s an identical replica of the catacombs in Rome, but in shortened space. Don’t get me wrong this place is still massive. Be sure to wear pants and a sweater or jacket. It’s an an old mine so it’s cold and dark in there.
The attraction is well setup and the experience inside the cool dark cave is special. However two things to mention. There was no English option for the tour (they offer English documents to read, but not easy to read in dim conditiins). Secondly and more importantly, this is a complete replica done in the early 1900s of a roman catacomb, so everything inside is not authentuc or roman but 'fake". The world 'Museum' is hence incorrect, it is a bettrr understandood as reconstruction. Price is 16 eur for an hour.
This experience was pretty cool for me and my friends! I found out that it was a replica but it was still really cool to tour. The tour was in Dutch and as Americans, me and my friends were fine with it as we are tourists and don’t expect anyone to cater to us as far as language goes! The tour guide and staff were sweet and the tour was a little over an hour. The different rooms were cool to checkout and the artwork was really nice. I highly recommend buying your tickets in advance just to be on the safe side and wear a nice jacket as it’s cold down there!
We had to take a guided tour to see the catacombs. The tour was mandatory but the explanations were not in English - only Dutch. There was only a brochure to read. Worse, the guide left out several parts, including the most important ones, leaving us unable to explore or learn about them ourselves as we were not supposed to leave the tour. Considering the entrance fee of 16 euros, I did not expect this answer: we were short on time and could not see some parts.👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Nice tour in catacomben 1:1 replicated from those in Rome. Some great restauration has been done and the biblical depictions were worth the tour alone in my opinion. Pretty cold and moist, so be prepared, also not accessible with wheelchair etc
The Valkenburg Catacombs are a full-on replica of the ones in Rome, copied down to tiny details. Long corridors, carved chapels, paintings — it really feels like stepping into the real thing. It’s impressive, a bit morbid, and very dark. You get a little lantern to carry, which is fun, but also a reminder to stick close to the group or you’ll lose your way fast. It’s cold underground, so bring a coat. There’s no English-speaking guide, only an information sheet in English, so most of the storytelling is lost if you don’t understand Dutch. Kids won’t enjoy it — mine didn’t. It’s slow and heavy. Better for adults, history lovers, or religious visitors who’ll find meaning in the atmosphere. Staff are friendly, the place is well cared for, and the detail really does transport you. Not a cheerful outing, but if you’re into history, religion, or unusual sites, this is one of the most striking experiences you’ll find in Limburg.
Great tour! A very impressive replica of some of the Roman tombs and fresco's in Rome. Our tourguide Ben was very entertaining. Serious history but also nice jokes. He knows his stuff. We recommend this tour!
Super impressive! Our tour guide Peter made it even more so. Interesting for younger and older audiences. A must go.
