Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden is a German town in the Bavarian Alps on the Austrian border. South of town, Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, has a restaurant with alpine views. The Dokumentation Obersalzberg museum chronicles the Nazi era. Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden illuminates the salt mine’s 500-year history. Lifts lead to Obersalzberg and Rossfeld ski areas. To the south, trails cross Berchtesgaden National Park.

Awesome place to see the views of the mountain range and the village below. Only has a little bit of the history to read to say how iconic it is. Overall Great place to visit, definitely a must see if not for the view alone.
Expensive but worth the trip! The bus is a little confusing, but you have to take the city (838) bus to the Dokumentation station and then buy a tour bus pass to get to the top. 838 drops you off and picks you up from the same area. Convenient! Costs around 11.50Euro for round trip from the main station to the tour station. Keep your ticket for the return. Can also just buy a one-way ticket. We went middle of October. Snow was VERY slippery (and wet) so bring good shoes or walking poles. Was cold but not super cold. Thumbs up if this review helped you! :)
We were surrounded by clouds going up the mountain, but once we went up the elevator, it was clear skies and beautiful. The house is a restaurant which i did not go to. You can climb a little bit of the mountain and take breathtaking pictures.
Great experience and amazing views!!! If you go when there is snow, expect no treatment on paths could be very treacherous. Would do it again for sure!!! Restaurant was very good also, would eat there again. You need to park then take a bus up to elevator.
A must to go ,the special built buses will take you up the narrow path and the scene from the bus on the way up is something one must experience for themselves. Everyone will be guided into a tunnel where a lift will take you all the way up to the Nest. U will be able to have some snacks at the coffee house when u reach the top.
This is a very cool place to visit. It’s great that such a historical place has remained largely unchanged since construction. Even if you’re not interested in World War II history, the site offers fantastic views assuming the weather is cooperative. We had a nice lunch in the restaurant and I hope to visit again with clearer weather.
A very good experience. The bus trip up and down is excellent, it makes you appreciate the work involved to create the road in such a short time period. The views from the top are just phenomenal.
Must see and worth the 15 min electrical bus drive up mountain. Spectacular views. Terrible history but worth remembering all of us to have this never happen again. In the sun-gallery there is some information on the site and history.

Mine
Family-friendly tours of a 1500s salt mine with miners' slides, a salt lake & illuminated grotto.

Good activity to do with kids and you can also explore the salt mine also. Perfect vacation here. However, taking a photo inside is not allowed but it not a problem😊 Tips: No need to wait if you buy a ticket in advance in order to choose the entry time before enter.
The tour starts with a traditional railway into the mountain. Inside the mountain you can see and learn some interesting about the salt mining. The guided tour includes two times very cool slides from one to another level and a short crossing of an underground lake by boat. Recommend to buy you tickets online. Parking means extra costs unfortunately.
The tour of the salt mine was very well organized. Unfortunately, taking photos and videos is not allowed. We went down some sections using slides, and there was also a boat ride on an underground salt lake, accompanied by beautiful light shows and music. It was a very touching experience for me. I highly recommend this program to anyone visiting the area.😊
What a great experience to make this tour in the salt mine. There are timeslot entries and once you are inside you get an overall to put on. Then you board a small train that brings you inside the mine. When you get off you take two wooden slides down to the level where the guided tour starts. That slide was big fun for most of the visitors. With the tour you make a long walk with regular stops at interesting locations where you get information from the guide or via the audio guide in your own language. There is even a small boat ride over a salt lake with a light show when you are crossing. At the end you go up again with a lift, hop on the train and back to the entrance. The salt in the mine was formed over 200 million years ago, during the Triassic period, when a shallow sea as part of the Thetys ocean evaporated and left behind thick layers of concentrated salt. Over millions of years this salt was covered with rocks and with the forming of the Alps moulded and squeezed between rock layers With the tour you can see those layers in the walls and you can taste the salt. The salt is now extracted using wet mining where large quantities of water are pumped in the layers via drill holes. The concentrated salt solution (brine) is then pumped to a processing plant to be turned into salt for all purposes. In the shop you can buy this Alpine salt and more.
We didnt go in. It is a tourist trap. Tickets are expensive 25€ and ~32€ with some combined tickets, 50minutes guided trip. Its beyond me why there has to be amusement parks in saltmines. Torda salt mine was enough, also for a fragment of this price, and you could stay there as long as you wanted. Which is great for lungtherapy. Western countries are so kapitalistic they would even make air as a privilege... Basic human necessities like peeing is already an expensive privilege in most part of germany. No I dont have coins, No I dont want to buy the cupon down in the overpriced shop, tankstation or whatever. It is rare to find free toilet in germany. Their store: (Their tablesalt is slightly cheaper in the nearby stores.) +They have iodized salt with selene in the merch store. - They have iodized salt with extra fluoride. I remember fluoride was the main experimental material in the soviet era, they poisoned the water source of an entire village, it turned out it is causing people to become paranoid and an intense drop in their IQ. For pregnant women it is highly recommended to avoid it. It also causes tyroid problems and the dissolvement of calcium from the bones into the bloodstream. Im strongly against this. It is just a scam that is good for your teeth. It is against your brain. Its not something advised to put in your food, but it is already in the tapwater... Which may explain the behaviour of society nowadays. The fact they still successfully mistyped my name in their answer also just convinces me we did the right decision not going in... Just because the government, the authority, the american FDA approved something as food and somebody got bribed to bend over the lobbying, it wont make things healthy or beneficial for the people or their health. Tobacco, sugar lobby, hidrogenized ultraprocessed plant oils, fluoride..etc.
Interesting history of Salt mining combined with family fun (cart, slides, boating) in 1 hr. You can park the car for 4 euro on the parking on the other side of the river and road. Beware when weather is bad you need an umbrella to get to the entrance
Really good enjoyed it, audio guides for us English people, was good fun really enjoyed it, the slides were nuts lol 😆 really hoped to have picked up a visitor guide book showing the caves and things as photos weren't allowed and I don't recommend even trying it. But they certainly like their salt.
A salt mine located in the middle of a beautiful mountain landscape. The water in the river is crystal blue. The tour in the Salt mine is impressive/fun for old and young. You're driving 600 meters with a little Train inside the mountain.

Loads of Erie history on the area, audio self walking tour filled with photos, models, artifacts, and stories of the era. At the end of the tour you walk through 5% of the bunkers used.
enter for free after purchasing bus ticket. get the audio guide in your favourite language (40 min guide is enough) and start your time journey and learn the connection of the black era to the local village. after finishing the floor, head to the bunker and witness a glimpse of ww2 as you follow the tunnels. very educational in this thematic.
Why are the staff so unfriendly and hostile? It was the 29th August, 2025. We had done the Eagle's Nest and the tour operator allowed time for us to visit the Documentation Centre. Now, naively, it was our assumption that the centre was INCLUDED in the Munich to Eagles Nest trip but we were mistaken, as we soon found out. So we sauntered in - no queues in sight, no price list anywhere. We approached an entrance to the right before being accosted by a very rude woman. Now, there's a way to deal with people and there's a way not to. Had she been more polite, we would have apologised and simply paid the entrance fee, whatever it was - but because she was so hostile we simply left. That's 4 entrance fees you cost the museum lady! It costs nothing to be nice, but it does cost to be otherwise. Reading some of the other negative reviews, staff rudeness seems to be a common theme. At the very least have a visible price list on display or a sign at the tour entrance "No entry without tickets".
Ticket to Kehlsteinhaus includes free entrance to this center, so it’s best to visit the house first and then come here afterward. Unfortunately, you can’t buy a combined ticket for both at this location. The place is easy to find from the bus stop. A free audio guide is available in multiple languages. If you follow the guide strictly, you might miss some of the wall displays, so take your time to explore on your own as well. The entire facility is wheelchair accessible, and retractable chairs are available at the entrance for those who need them. At the end of the tour, you’ll also have the chance to visit the bunkers.
A must see. A very well organised and planned out museum, telling the story of the area and the importance of enjoying the peaceful landscape while respecting the history. You get free entry with your ticket to Eagles Nest, alternatively it is €3 per adult. There are free audio guides: you can either choose to listen as you go by entering exhibition codes, do a 40 minute guide, or an 80 minute guide. The temporary exhibition, Portraits by Stefan Hanke was exceptional to see also. Although I had studied WW2 and other wars in school and university, I was still moved and felt it for the rest of my time in Berchtesgaden.
Seeing this bunker in person is a interesting experience, but I really enjoyed going through and reading all the history in the museum and seeing all the artifacts related to World War Two. In my opinion the most interesting thing there was the map used to plan attacks in World War Two.
This is among the best history museums I have ever been to. It put the region's role in World War II and actions of the Nazis and historical artifacts of the time in context. It was thorough and included personal stories. We surveyed the entire exhibit and used the audio guide, as well. It was not over done, but it was well done with an extreme amount of detail. All history museums could learn from this center. Thank you.
Very insightful information on the history of Nazi Occupation. The 80mims tour was worthwhile.

a very beautiful church from 1697. baroque style, 2 onions dome and red domed roof. only can be reach by the boat or after a long hike through mountains. the view at the shore of Königssee is worth it, the surrounding green fields are superb.
We visited the stunning Königssee and were amazed by the picturesque Pilgrimage Church of St. Bartholomew. Nestled at the foot of the Alps, its red domes and serene lakeside setting made it feel like a scene from a postcard. Peaceful, historic, and absolutely breathtaking—a must-see when in Bavaria!
Absolute beauty! Can be reached after a few minutes boat ride from Seelände. The church itself is small with impressive interior. The surrounding area is also worth a few minutes walk. Tranquility at its best.
A small beautiful church located next to the lake. You can not get here simply by hiking, better buy ticket. However the interior is not really spectacular impressive compared to other churches at the same era. Great for visiting!
A beautiful church sitting peacefully by the lake. I came here in late September during the low season — no crowds, no lines, just pure tranquility. Absolutely worth the trip!
Built in 1134, expanded, and rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 17th century, surrounded by mountains, a lake, and green meadows, it seems like something straight out of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Fantastic.
Great scenery, you can rent a rowing boat for 25 euro if you want to row to this church
Beautiful place, that’s true, but the church itself is seen in 2-3 minutes. The surroundings are much more appealing. However, the return system of the boats should be revised and have either booked return times to control how much people are waiting in line or have much more boats going from here to Königssee Seelände. We waited for more than 1h to be able to get back to the boat and return to the parking lot!…

Wonderful location. Beautiful stay and with great nature around. However, many cigarette butts were found around that contain plastic and toxins. Nobart2 and kk_korrekturfee took part in The Trash Traveler face challenge here. Bin your cigarettes, leave no trace - the ocean starts with our acts far away from the beach! Thank you! :-)
Modern state of the art information centre with excellent displays and infographics about the surrounding area. Had previously spent hours trying to work out where the best hiking trails for our ability would be. The lady in the centre gave me all the necessary information in under 5 minutes. We followed her recommendations for three hikes which turned out to be spot on. May thanks! Would highly recommend a visit!
We really loved this small natural history museum. Its beautifully made, great sound immersion, bits of Interactive exhibts that the kids loved. Design is all very natural and befitting for the area. Definitely recommend. And tickets are also very affordable!
Simple but entertaining and interactive permanent exhibit about the plant and wildlife of Berchtesgadenerland as well as some local history and folk culture. Some parts of the exhibit offer English translation, but the majority of it is only in German. This is a good place for elementary-aged kids as well as older kids and adults. The exhibit makes good use of multimedia technology and interactive displays.
This is like an educational center but not like a national park office.
Very interesting museum with bright, modern, innovative exhibition. Excellent skyline, good restaurant, very innovative storage boxes ) Amazing national park at all.
Sadly we could not check out the outdoor area due to the rain, but the indoor was amazing. We and our 1-year old loved it and we are for sure coming back one day. Everything is stroller friendly, the pries are very reasonable and the staff is very friendly.
Very interactive museum. Enjoyed every bit. We loved the usage of light, sounds and information. The ‘cinema’ is beautiful with an amazing surprise in the end. When you visit Berchtesgaden you cannot skip this museum.
