Porto Venere
1. Porto Venere
Neighborhoods
Porto Venere is a village on the Ligurian coast of northwestern Italy. It’s known for Porto Venere Regional Natural Park, a protected area with trails and dive sites. The park encompasses Palmaria Island, dotted with beaches and caves. The Gothic-style Church of St. Peter sits atop a rocky headland. Nearby is the centuries-old Castello Doria, an imposing clifftop fortress with views of the Gulf of Poets.

We ended up here after our 7km hike. Cute church in the upper part of the village.
Quite an ornate baroque style church with frescoes on the ceiling, ribbed vaults, spiral columns, statues, stone pulpit with stone carvings, black and white checked tiles on the floor. Beautiful church. Worth your few minutes to visit or sit and reflect.
This is the sleepiest and least interesting town out of the 5 Cinque Terres, but very much worth the visit. No way should you walk up here. It is quite a long way up from the train station. By all means, buy a ticket for the mini bus at the train station.
Nice detailed church I recommend you come if tou visit Corniglia
Beautiful place, but almost seemed eerily alone in its placement. Perhaps it’s the smaller size of the town...
Small church in the heart of Corniglia. Like every town of the Cinque Terre, you will find its local church that you can visit.
Marvelous church, probably the best one I have seen across all the Cinque Terre. Very small but truly decorated in all its parts. It is accessible only from its front side so do not mind the blocked entrance on its rear side.

Beautiful island just in front of Portovenere! It's so easy to reach using a ferry from Portovenere pier which costs 2.50€ each way! On the island there's a few restaurants/refreshment and it's perfect for a beach day or for a hike day (if I'm not wrong you can do the whole island in 2 hours). There are beautiful landscapes and breathtaking view points! On top of that, you can also spot wild goats all around the island ;) highly recommended! A great and quieter alternative to Cinque Terre!
Unfortunately didn't get enough time to complete the walk around the island. Being October the ferry times were not as often as it would have been in the summer or spring. Definitely will come back.
I like this island very much. The ferry boat takes people to Terrizzo but the rest of the island is not crowded. Palmaria is quiet and it has got fantastic views on Portovenere and the surrounding sea. The trekking around the island is nice and relaxing. There are goats walking free on the paths..they have horns but don't be scared, they are nice!
Nice island to park near by boat
Mediterranean little island
Great place to visit while in the region of the Cinque Terra.
Amazing giro isola. About 2 hours for complete round.
Terrible service, rude and not worth the money..

Remains of a centuries-old stone castle offering elevated, picturesque views of the sea.

I came on a rainy day so decided not to enter the castle. However the views from the gardens are fantastic📸🤩
This 16th century castle looks cool from a distance, but don't waste your money going inside. 5€ to walk around an empty courtyard. Basically robbery. Views are nice but not worth it, you can get great views elsewhere.
Castello Doria is a striking medieval fortress that dominates the skyline of Portovenere. More than just stone walls, it offers jaw-dropping views of the Ligurian Sea, the colorful harbor below, and the dramatic cliffs around Chiesa di San Pietro. The interior is minimal, but the scale and setting make it unforgettable. Well worth the climb for history buffs and photographers alike.
Sixteenth century Doria Castle at Porto Venere, Italy, was built by the Genoese on a cliff above the Tyrrhenian Sea. A stone wall climbs from the harbor to the castle. At the caste entrance is a high vaulted chamber.
It's a climb for sure, but there are amazing views from the Castle. You can walk the entire grounds in 30 mins, but you could take your time as well.
Amazing viewpoint , and great area to just relax and walk around but unfortunately even with the paid entry there is not much to see , no information point about the place , or even some texts here and there to explain the history of the castle. Though as the entry is really cheap , I can’t really be mad about it. Nice area to picnic too with a lot of benches and places to sit ! Do think of taking water with you as the area does not have any shops or Fountain !
Absolutely stunning location with breathtaking views of the sea and cliffs! The natural rock formations, turquoise water, and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect spot for photos and relaxation. Highly recommend visiting if you're in the area – a true hidden gem!"
Pretty castle, our dogs were allowed in. Just a short walk on the grounds with lots of stairs, but pretty view and maintained castle.

Good fritto misto and ravioli. Nice and friendly staff
Really nothing special. Nice view of Portovenere, but the establishment isn't great for the price. Food was terrible (e.g. a chicken sandwich for around 12 Euros consisted of cheap processed chicken on dried bread. no salad, no sauce or mayo, no love). For an afternoon we paid 27 euros for two sunlounges and an umbrella. The beach is very rocky and difficult to get in for a swim. Staff are helpful and friendly. But, I won't rush back in a hurry.
We came here for lunch around 12 and been asked to wait almost 1h30 only to find out that the staff have been letting other people in before us with no reservations and no waiting time.. truly disappointed by that kind of service. In addition of almost 40 minutes wait to receive our orders...
The most expensive beach on Ligurian coast we’ve gone so far. Paid 19 eur for the beach amenities per person and 1 eur each time you want to use shower. Staff didn’t inform how the shower works when we paid, so we had to go there again after swimming and ask. “Hot water doesn’t work because of the problem with solar panels” - was written on the door.
We had to wait a bit for the table as all the tables were booked. Food was good, portions were not too big, but still fine.
Terrible service and rude. We waited 20 minutes standing awkwardly and watching other people be attended to and seated while he told us that he would prepare the table. It was a table for 2.. We watched him see to everyone else the entire time before we finally walked away in disgust. Didn't even get to taste the food.. Another tourist trap. Stay away
This is a genuine Italian beach. Beautiful water, stones beach

Rocky cove popular for swimming, named after the renowned English poet who drew inspiration from it.
Slide 1 of 8
Grotta di Lord Byron is more than just a rocky inlet—it’s a dramatic, windswept tribute to poetry and the power of the sea. Named after the English poet who famously swam across the gulf from here, the spot is steeped in romantic legend. Waves crash against black stone walls as sunlight filters through the narrow opening, creating a moody, cinematic vibe. It’s a must-visit for the atmosphere and view alone.
It's a sumptuous little town with narrow, alley-lined streets, and the Grotta di Lord Byron is charming, with a wonderful view of the endless sea and a bay perfect for an enclosed beach.
Spent multiple days swimming here! Clear water with tons of fish, so bring goggles. Would 100% visit again. Be careful though as the water can be quite rough and dangerous sometimes.
One of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve seen in my life
This place is magic. We accidentally stumbled upon it solely because we were staying at the Porto Venere Grand a short walk away. We visited it it two nights in a row for the views and sunset. I decided to swim on our second evening - there are tourists and locals alike sunbathing, swimming, and cliff jumping. It’s a bit of a steep walk down, so would be difficult for someone with mobility issues. Also, you have to make sure you’re comfortable exploring and swimming without a lifeguard/safety personnel present. If you’re comfortable, I highly recommend grabbing a picnic and some champagne to relax on the rocks and enjoy some swimming. In the middle of the summer, even at golden hour, it can be quite hot in the sun, so plan appropriately. There is a rock lower down close to the water that most people were using to get in and out of the water - many were jumping in from higher points as well. I scraped my legs pretty badly trying to get out on the rocks/barnacles - keep an eye out for jellyfish as well - a few of us got stung. Regardless, the scrapes and sting were well worth it as this was a highlight of our trip and one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen.
Nothing super special apart from the name (Byron) but pleasant enough
Very beautiful place in Italy I recommend for the sunset
On 2.10 it was quite nice to visit. Not so many people, nice 22 Celsius degree. Only lack of parking and traffic solution. All the nice shops providing tourist attractions are realty must pass by status!
