Super easy bike trail for all ages, we cycled from Lydford to Okehampton. Lovely views, two high bridges and a few gates/crossings. Signposts to pubs and cafés on route. Great day out for everyone wether you are walking or cycling.
A fantastic bike ride, 17.5 miles round trip and mostly flat. Free parking and the start and the only bits on the road are brief and quiet. Some fantastic views and great places to stop for a picnic. Pretty easy ride for the whole family.
A great days ride, 95% road surface too! We stopped in a great pub/cafe/cycle shop on the way & took the train home.
Wow. Been on a few and this one is very good, plenty of places to stop and plenty to see on the way. The slopes aren't very steep at all and the track is virtually all tarmacked, if you start at Oakhamoton there's plenty of car park spaces by the railway station with plenty of spaces.
Great track for easy ride, great views and spectacular bridge. Highly recommended!
It is one of my favourite rides. Nice and flat if you are of senior years and the distance is just right. I like the Spring and the fields of blue bells, about late April.
What3Words. Warp.Liberty.mile. for start of track park by train station which is free. Only walked first few miles of track was ok as walk but would be much better for cycling
Superb traffic free cycle route from Lydford to Okehampton. Also found a superb Vegan Cafe in West Street Okehampton, not tb be missed..

Okehampton Castle in Devon is a fascinating ruin with a rich history. Originally built in the 11th century as a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, it later became a luxurious fortified manor house in the late medieval period. Perched on a hill, it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can explore the remains of the keep, chapel, and great hall, which provide insights into the lives of its medieval occupants. The site also inspired poets like William Wordsworth, adding a literary connection to its historical significance. Visited with my bike. Had the audio guide to guide me around.
On my way back, I passed through Okehampton. Saw a castle sign and thought, why not. I'm glad I did as this was a historical treasure dating back over 800 years. Wonderful scenery all around. Not many people here, so I literally had the place to myself. Can't complain, worth the visit.
A very interesting place to visit. Audio to hear which is worth having as you go around the remains of the castle. Impressive as to how much of the castle is there. Beautiful views and also a lovely walk around it into woods and a meadow with seating at the castle and picnic area. Nice lady serving at the booth for the entrance fee and souvenirs.
Surprisingly interesting place although difficult to find. Could do with some more directions please. Great view from the top and how some of the castle remains standing is amazing. Steep drops though with no barriers so be careful with children!
Well, it would have been a better experience if they were actually open. They were unusually closed due to operational issues whatever that means . Regardless, it is still a beautiful site. We managed to find a beautiful path to walk back to town on which was significantly better than walking on the road. I will have to google more info on the castle as it is very old and has a huge amount of history behind it. Nice steps leading up to the main building at the top of the hill.
The site is owned by English Heritage and the entrance fee was well worth it. It's quite a steep climb to the top of the site, where the view is impressive. The different rooms and walls of the castle are very interesting. There is a car park approximately 100 yards away and a disabled parking area located just opposite the main entrance to the site.
I love castles, and this is a nice ruin of an old nobles hunting Lodge made to castle scale. Very sweet little historic site, quite steep towards the top, but lovely visit. Toilets available too, a big plus 😉
Lovely castle, tucked away in Okehampton. Well worth a visit, looking down on the remains you can visualise where and what the buildings were. English Heritage. Small car park, toilet and shop.

Great help, advice and assistance whilst booking and paying for paddleboarding for a party of four. If we're down in Cornwall in future will certainly make an effort to get to the lake and do it all again. Would highly recommend for visiting and the prices we're excellent too. Can't thank them enough for one of our best experiences whilst on holiday.
We didn’t realise that this lake is a schools activity centre and it was full of kids when turned up. Not a problem as we were in the camping field next to the lake with lovely views. The problem was with the facilities. The main block was out of bounds to the public for schools use only. The small side block was open to us campers and notices stated no school children. The small block was absolutely filthy, water and mud on the floors, and cobwebs and dust everywhere. School children were using the facilities as I had to queue to use one of the two toilets and both being used by kids. The toilets weren’t cleaned until the evening of our second nights stay and then they were only wiped down. My husband asked about doing some paddle boarding when we arrived, the girl on reception told us to come back about 11 in the morning as the schools were using then but if they weren’t all in use he could book for an hour. We sat and watched the kids in the morning and several boards weren’t being used. He went to Reception and was told by another girl that they were all in use and he couldn’t use them. By 12 o’clock the boards were all stacked up at the side of the lane and not used again until 2pm! All in all not a cheap stay especially when you can’t take part in any activities and the toilets are a disgrace. We did fill in a comments sheet about our stay that was emailed to us and asked to be contacted but never heard from them. Our stay was in July (only doing my reviews now).
Went with friends and family, including a 5yr old. Enjoyed our stay. We had a grass pitch, with the view of the lake. Very peaceful and beautiful. The facilities are: toilets, showers, wash rooms, fridge and microwave. BBQ area, loads of benches with tables. There are lots of cute little bunnies running around. We were there on a rainy night but still a wonderful experience. Definitely recommend it and we will go there again.
Arrived Sunday evening for 1 night very quite only 2 other pitches in use. Pitch 31 great views next to lake. Only downside to being next to the lake not a great night sleep due to the large number of very noisy geese throughout the night.
What a fantastic place, We enjoyed it so much and stayed an extra night. The staff are super helpful and nothing is too much trouble, All the activities we supervised and so many to do, we did High Ropes, Paddle Boards and Canoeing. There is an abundance of wildlife around the lake to enjoy meaning dogs must be kept on a lead. However, there are fields adjacent to the camping if you want to stretch their legs. Thank You for making the last week of our holiday a very memorable one... Will definitely be back to try out the sailing ⛵️
Activity Team were super professional, efficient and friendly. Making sure everyone was catered for in terms of equipment and knowledge and gave them freedom to explore the lake knowing that they were in very safe hands - wonderful weather and scenery made the day - thank you
Really great experience. Great family memories made. Will definitely be back next year. Tried paddleboarding with the grand children. Very safe with all equipment supplied.
2 hour windsurfing taster session - really good instructor (Arc) who was great with both the parents and kids. Well worth the money. We then came back to hire sailing boats the following day - also brilliant. We were a little lucky with the weather.

Lovely station, buffet/café, toilets, book sales and waiting room and on the other side of the platform is a small museum.
Ex Southern region heritage railway with interesting traction and rolling stock. Nice tearoom with tasty all day breakfasts. Free car parking, good community feel to the station, oh and it has a cat!
A lovely station, with a great cafe
Newly restored rail service. Station undergoing refurbishment ready for May 2022.
Excellent Station area and Cafe. A good place to be.
Friendly staff, even gave the dogs biscuits when we arrived, Christmassy decorated train carriage was bizarre, but we really enjoyed our time there! :-)
Quiet when I was there. Nice little museum. Buffet inside. Met Percy the station cat very friendly. Staff friendly too.
Tho the station itself was fine we did the Christmas theme just before Xmas and found the experience below par compared to previous years, the issue I had was there was no communication and my emails were ignored! They changed the Xmas theme for 2017 and a lot of people weren’t too impressed by this, tho the layout was good and we still got cookies and hit chocolate te theme was disjointed and music used to pass time rather than being part of the enjoyment.

Large car park giving access to a large play park, playing fields and hiking trails that extend to Dartmoor and beyond. You can also walk into town to visit a variety of pubs and shops if you want. Can get busy on weekends, especially when running events are on.
Beautiful park with lovely well kept river walk. Clean. Picnic benches. Lots of running & play space. Great rides and climbing equipment. Swings, zip wires & quite a few slides.
Great clean park, kid and dog friendly nice cafe but service slow even when quiet
Lovely park, well kept gardens, all a credit to the gardening team, great kids activity area
If travelling to Cornwall this is a great place to stop and stretch your legs. Such a lovely park and well worth the slight detour from the main road.
Lovely park! Very pretty, good area for dogs to have a run around, nice river...and we visited when the fayre was on, so quite LOUD, but still pleasant.
The golden heart of Okehampton Symonds Park, at the center is a large green open space. On the other side of the river is the tree filled garden area, watch out for the small water fall and ponds with the fountain, get the kids to watch out for the tadpoles and frogs. Walk to top of the the park past the football pitch to get a refreshing drink and a bite to eat or visit the swimming pool and gym, hire golf clubs for the pitch and put get a cold or hot drink. Watch out for the events that happen the May duck races, party in the park, the fair visits, or just chill in the park.
Saturdays free parking after 12! Hour was 60pence via ringo. Beautiful area, good play area for dogs off lead but under control. When walking grounds dogs are on lead. Good kids (some childish adults) playarea too!

A quite interesting museum with a very fascinating history. It’s child-friendly, which makes visiting much easier, as there’s something at every step that helps kids learn in a less boring way. The staff are very helpful and friendly. A quick tour can take around an hour, but if you want to dive into the details, you could easily spend the whole day there. I highly recommend a visit and wish the museum continued success
We visited today with our 7 year old and our baby who was in the pushchair. We were looking for a rainy day activity but were dubious upon entering that we would be able to get the pushchair around however, that was not the case. Staff kindly showed us to a lift at the back of the museum and how to get around. We spent just under 2 hours there and could have spent longer particularly if you went with older children or just as an adult. They had lots of interesting exhibits and lots for children to look and a touch! Additionally they had an Easter trail, colouring and craft stations dotted around. Overall we were amazed at how brilliant it was and only cost £14 for all of us! Staff were absolutely amazing, so kind and helpful. Definitely worth a visit regardless of the weather.
A museum of the past 5000 years of Dartmoor. Lots of artifacts and displays, and the staff are lovely. Lacks descriptions of the exhibits and articles on display though
Very interesting museum combined, over 3 floors with tourist info centre. It is in the center of town with access up a cobbled entrance way. However it is still disbility accessible with a lift and toilet facilities. The staff are very friendly, passionate and helpful about the area. They will enthusiastically answer any questions you have. There is so much interesting information in the museum covering prehistory to modern day as well as the challenges to the survival of Dartmoor. They have different exhibitions from time to time, and we were privileged to talk to 2 lovely young ladies who were doing conservation and cleaning work on some of the exhibits. There is something here for all ages and you could spend hours here and not get around it all, which is why you get an extended entry pass on arrival. A must venue to visit to learn about the area and it's life.
A small museum but packed with really interesting exhibits. Well worth a visit even if it's a sunny day. Our thanks to all the volunteers.
I love these little museums. Fascinating to see and read about local history. The volunteers are lovely and very knowledgeable. Only £6 and 3 floors of interesting facts.
If you are interested in Dartmoor I found the museum a good place to learn about the history and character of the area. Some really interesting exhibits which focus on the industries, way of life and natural history laid out in a historic building in an logical and informative way. Well worth a visit.
An excellent museum detailing the history of Dartmoor & is peoples over the millennia. Run by friendly volunteers. Lots to see & an essential visit when in Okehampton.
