We didn’t get to set foot on Kungsholm Fortress, but we were lucky enough to get an incredible view of it from our cruise ship as we sailed into Karlskrona—and even from a distance, it was impressive. The fortress sits on a small island just off the coast, and its strategic position at the entrance to the naval harbor makes it clear why it played such an important role in Sweden’s maritime defense.
Built in the late 1600s, Kungsholm Fortress has guarded the approach to Karlskrona for centuries and remains an active military installation, which makes it all the more fascinating. From the water, you can spot its rounded bastions, lighthouse, and even a glimpse of the courtyard inside the old stone walls. Knowing it has a botanical garden within the fortress walls—planted by the soldiers and maintained for generations—only added to the intrigue.
While civilian access is restricted, getting a view of Kungsholm from the ship gave us a real sense of its scale and historical significance. If you’re cruising into Karlskrona, be sure to head out on deck—you won’t want to miss this striking piece of Swedish naval history quietly holding its post just offshore.
