Bekal Fort in Kerala looks like an incredible place steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty. From what I’ve read and seen in pictures, it’s one of the largest and best-preserved forts in Kerala, with impressive laterite stone walls and unique keyhole-shaped bastions. Its location right on the Arabian Sea offers breathtaking views of the coastline, making it perfect for photography and scenic walks. I’ve also read that the fort’s design and strategic position tell the story of its importance in the 17th century as a defensive stronghold. The surrounding greenery and the rocky beach create a peaceful and picturesque environment, which seems ideal for anyone who loves history, architecture, or just wants to enjoy a serene coastal spot.
Bekal Fort is a must-visit gem in Kasargod! The old colonial-style fort is beautifully constructed, and walking through its massive walls gives a glimpse of history and architecture that has stood strong for centuries. The fort itself is well maintained and offers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. Right next to it is Bekal Beach, which is clean, lively, and very happening. There are plenty of small stores and eateries around, making it a perfect spot to relax after exploring the fort. The sunset view from both the fort and the beach is simply spectacular. A perfect blend of history and natural beauty — highly recommended for anyone visiting North Kerala!
Bekal Fort is one of Kerala’s most impressive and beautifully maintained historical landmarks by ASI. 👍 Got famous after a Movie song in film (Bombay) 🎥 The entry / parking can be better managed, had to wait on the road for 20-25 minutes inching from main road to parking lot. Parking charge is Rs.40 Entry Tickets to be bought at the counter opposite to the main entry to port (Rs.25) Spread over 40 acres, it’s the largest fort in Kerala, built in the 17th century by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty. Later, it came under the control of Tipu Sultan and the British — each era leaving its mark on the fort’s architecture and story. Prepare for long walks and inclined climbs in watch towers. Scenic views of the sea and nearby beaches and town views, worth it. There are stone benches to sit / relax. Could see drinking water taps at few places. There are couple of small shops selling ice cream, juices and water, packed chips, etc. Best part is on the west side sea viewing point (going down stairs) and watching sunset. There are places to sit and also go up to the final watch tower where the waves hit against. Around 5:45-6 the guards keep whistling to get the people out 😀 There are small sandy beach areas besides the port but access is restricted, though could see few people. Sea is rough so not recommended to venture. Overall a great place to spend few hours and take pictures 👍
Incredible fort. The entry fee is Rs. 25. This fort offers breathtaking scenic views. We arrived early in the morning, and the central area was peaceful. Upon reaching the viewpoint overlooking the beach, the sight was stunning, and the gentle sea breeze was calm and soothing. Overall, it is a lovely place to relax and enjoy.
Amazing fort with a rich history. Very well maintained. The highlight of the fort being the sea facing outpost, which gives a spectacular views of the Arabian Sea especially during sunset. Do visit in the evenings after 4 pm, since the temperature is cooler allowing one to walk around and explore this fort at a leisurely pace
Visited Bekal Fort recently — it’s a beautiful historic place with a stunning sea view. The atmosphere is peaceful and perfect for an evening visit. The fort area is well maintained, though it can get quite hot during the day, so sunset time is best. Nearby, there’s an ANERT EV charging station, which was very convenient for charging my electric car. Food options are limited (mostly ice cream and water), but overall it’s a must-visit place in Kasaragod! 🌊🏰⚡
An ancient fort on a shore of Arabian Sea. Very well protected by Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI ). Well known movie shooting location favoured by the likes of Manirathnam. You get an enthralling view of the Arabian Sea. If you are lucky you get to see beautiful sunset too. If you climb above ‘ the stepless Batheri ‘ you can see Bekal Beach Park too which is around a km away. A small entry fee for 15yrs and above. Only cash is accepted. No UPI Payments or cards are accepted. Neatly maintained. Many make - shift shops sell some snacks and beverages inside the fort premises! A small pet bird zoo is a good attraction for children. Ample parking facility.
One of the best and must visit place in the list of you're exploring northern Kerala. The beauty is immense and suits for sunset views. Get ready to spend atleast 3 hours to witness and soak in the beauty of architecture and amazing views of the Arabian ocean. Many movie shooting had taken place in this historical fort. It is interesting to note that once tippu sultan had taken over the fort as military watchtower and apparently slipped into british empire after the fall of Tippu. It is also better to add bekkal park beach in the watchlist since it is very near to the fort and neatly maintained. Though the water is not suited for swimming activity it will provide other activities like exhibition, shopping, dinning, boat ride and great environment for quality family time.

Small Hindu temple on a lake in a tranquil, scenic environment featuring a well-known crocodile.
Slide 1 of 8
The Ananthapura Lake Temple is a Hindu temple located in the middle of a lake in the Kasaragod district of Kerala. Believed to have been built in the 9th century, it is the only lake temple in Kerala and is dedicated to Lord Anantha Padmanabha, a form of Vishnu. The sanctum is situated within a tranquil lake that is fed by a perennial spring. A footbridge connects the temple to the surrounding land. The temple was famously guarded by a vegetarian crocodile named Babiya, who lived in the lake for decades and was fed by the priests. Following Babiya's death in 2022, a new crocodile appeared in the lake.
A tranquil temple slightly away from Kasargod town. As we step into the temple premises there is an instant calm that settles in you. A beautiful experience. Do not miss the sannidhis near the dining hall. I have heard that the annadaanam here is very good.
A must visit temple. It's near Kumbala in Kasaragod dist. About six km from Kumbala railway station. You will get Autos from station for about Rs. 130-140. The temple closes after "Ucha pooja" at 12:30pm and after that there is Anna prasadam, very delicious veg lunch. There is guest house also. Those who want to stay can book by calling to the temple office.
This is a unique Hindu temple in Ananthapura, only temple built in the middle of a lake in Kerala. 👍 The main sanctum is surrounded by a rectangular lake, access to the sanctum is via a footbridge on the eastern side. The temple welcomes all visitors regardless of faith who are respectful and mindful of the sacredness of the place. Dress code - Men need to remove the shirts / T-shirts before entering sanctum area (you can remove and keep them with you). Women are expected to wear Saree, salwar Kamez, or long skirts. Avoid sleeves tops, short dresses or tight western wear. Puja tokens are issued near the entrance counter The lake seems to have a Vegetarian Crocodile 😀 we couldn’t see though. Footwear must be left outside the temple like any other temple. (No shoe racks) Photography inside sanctum not allowed. There’s enough parking space for two and four wheelers outside. Few shops in parking area to buy any puja items.
Such a calm and peaceful place — truly so refreshing to visit. The temple surrounded by water adds to its beauty and serenity. A perfect place to relax, reflect, and feel spiritually uplifted.
The Shree Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Temple, often called the Ananthapura Lake Temple, is a captivating and peaceful sanctuary nestled in Kumble, Kasaragod. As the only lake temple in Kerala, it offers a truly distinctive pilgrimage experience. It is an absolute must-visit! This temple holds immense spiritual importance as it is believed to be the Moolasthanam (original seat or source) of the much larger and famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The legend centers around the great sage, Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam, who was performing penance here. Lord Vishnu appeared before him as a mischievous child, whom the sage, annoyed by the pranks, chastised and pushed away. The child vanished into a cave, proclaiming that the sage would find him again at 'Ananthankadu' (the forest of the serpent Anantha). This cave is still visible near the lake, and the sage's subsequent journey led him to Thiruvananthapuram, where the massive Padmanabhaswamy Temple was eventually established. The Deity and Spiritual Core The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his non-reclining form, Ananthapadmanabha, The main sanctum is built on a rock structure in the center of a large rectangular lake (known locally as the kottaram). The architecture follows the classic Kerala style, blending seamlessly with the serene natural environment. The Lake and Its Divine Guardian The most famous and unique feature of the temple is the natural lake and its resident 'divine' crocodile, Babiya. Legend holds that Babiya is the guardian of the temple and is a strict vegetarian. While we visited the temple, the famous crocodile, sadly, remained elusive. We could not find the crocodile on this visit, but the large pond did host several fishes, which were cool to watch as they darted through the water. The Ambience: A Cool Midday Retreat We visited the temple around 12:00 PM in the afternoon, which might typically be the hottest time of the day. Surprisingly, the atmosphere was exceptionally calm and refreshing. The traditional architecture, the lush surroundings, and the cooling effect of the water all contributed to a wonderful, cool vibe. It was a serene and welcoming experience, making the midday journey completely worthwhile. Accessibility and Tips The temple is located approximately 14-16 km from Kasaragod town. It is easily reachable by road. Timing: Check timings before visiting, as like many temples, it closes for Ucha Pooja (midday worship). Visiting around 12:00 PM might mean you arrive just before the closing.
The surroundings are calm, clean, and filled with spiritual energy. The reflection of the temple in the water makes it a beautiful sight, especially in the early morning or evening. The place is well maintained and offers a serene experience away from the crowd.
Ananthapura Temple is a truly peaceful and divine place. The atmosphere is calm, spiritual, and very well maintained. The most special attraction is the famous guardian crocodile, which makes the temple even more unique and valuable. A must-visit temple for anyone coming to Kumble.

The temple has a rich history and a strong cultural presence in the region. It’s well-maintained, and the priests and staff are very welcoming and respectful. The prasadams offered are simple yet delightful, and the rituals are performed with great devotion.
Madhur Ganapathi Temple is one of the most peaceful and spiritually uplifting places in Kasaragod. The temple’s architecture is stunning — beautifully carved wooden structures and the serene surroundings make it truly special. The idol of Lord Ganapathi (Sree Madanantheshwara Vinayaka) gives a divine and positive energy as soon as you enter the sanctum. The temple is well-maintained, and the atmosphere is calm even when it’s crowded during festivals. The river beside the temple adds to the beauty and gives a soothing vibe. The prasadam is delicious and served with great devotion. If you’re visiting Kasaragod, this temple is a must-visit for anyone seeking blessings, peace, and a glimpse of Kerala’s traditional temple culture. 🙏
We went during the morning Pooja time so there was a little crowd but no wait time. The temple has been renovated and it's beautiful. Many stories are attached to the temple's main deities. First the puja is done for Ganesha and then for Shiva. The river Madhuvahini flows by the temple. You can buy the prasadam at the counter - 4 unniappams for 20rs. They were very tasty. The temple is frequented by many tourists from Karnataka as well.
Visited this temple when my friend invited to his new shop near by.. it is also just beside riverside , Architecture of this temple is very beautiful . I loved appam and modaka prasadam here..Very peaceful place in middle of city. Enjoyed divine vibes 🏵️🚩

After the jeernoddhara it is so good to visit. The udayastamana pooje is now done easily and I heard more than before. It was a great experience. We went here before visiting Malla.
A Devine place. Must visit. Thae temple architecture is too good. Neat and clean. You can offer sevas here. Tha Shiva and Ganesh are mainly worshipped here.
The temple exudes a peaceful and divine atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for spiritual seekers. The surrounding area is calm, with a river flowing nearby, which enhances the spiritual experience. Ranipuram Hill Station, often referred to as the "Ooty of Kerala," is a hidden paradise for trekkers and nature enthusiasts. The hike to the top takes you through misty forests, opening up to stunning views of the Western Ghats. The hill station’s cool breeze and peaceful surroundings make it perfect for a quick escape from the hustle and bustle. You might even spot some wildlife like elephants or rare bird species along the way. The trek is moderate, taking about 45 minutes, but if you're not up for the climb, you can opt for a jeep safari. A truly scenic and peaceful spot for anyone who loves nature and adventure! Just be sure to carry enough water and snacks, as there are no shops at the peak.
Must visit place. Moderate trekking is required to reach the top.
Ranipuram, a tranquil hill station in Kerala's Kasaragod district, offers breathtaking views and trekking trails. Known as the "Ooty of Kerala," it boasts lush forests, grasslands and diverse wildlife. At 750 meters above sea level, Ranipuram provides panoramic views, making it perfect for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. The best time to visit is from October to March .
This is an awesome trek to do . Takes about 1.5 - 2 hours to trek up and about an hour to get down There is a shorter but stealer route to climb as well. Take a guide , it's just a better experience. Saw some elephants from far on our last trek. You could encounter leaches during the rainy season. There are proper walking trails, with railings in a few section for support. All together a great experience
Short trek with a great view.
The best destination for trekking in North Kerala. You should to spend a day to travel and explore the beauty of Ranipuram. Visiting in the early hours or in the evening will be nice. You should give information about plastic carry bags and other plastic utensils at the ticket counter. Throwing away the plastic waste is prohibited. Smoking and Alcohol consumption is also prohibited. So please don't carry a cigarette lighter, match box or Alcohol with you. It is better to carry food and water with you while trekking. It will take minimum one and half hour to reach the top of hill (2.5 km from the entry point). And in Ranipuram there is a dtpc guest house maintened by some private personal and some private resorts are also available. Due to Covid restrictions, there is a change in the entry time (8am to 3pm) and a maximum of 400 people per day are allowed for trekking. The new entry ticket and parking fees as follows Entry fee Adults 50 INR Children 20 INR Foreigners 150 INR Camera 50 INR Parking fee Bike 10 INR Auto rickshaw 20 INR Car 30 INR Mini Bus 60 INR Bus 100 INR
Ranipuram, formerly known as Madathumala belongs to the Talakaveri Hill Range and is situated in the very border of Sulya (Karnataka) and Kasaragod (Kerala). On top of Ranipuram, you can get the view of the other hills that belong to the Talakaveri range, which is much more larger than higher than Ranipuram, unfortunately those hills do not have any official access for tourism, not in my knowledge at least. In my opinion, it is wrong to call Ranipuram as 'Ooty of Kerala' as it is just a hill of 2.5 KMs trek and not a hill station like Ooty. The views from the top are pretty much like any other such Hills and isn't way too spectacular. There is an entrance fee of ₹50 for Adults, ₹30 for Kids, ₹150 for Foreigners and an extra amount of less than ₹50 for carrying Camera. Drones are strictly prohibited though. Extra parking charges for vehicles but the parking space was very badly maintained during my visit. There are a few shops nearby. You've to deposit ₹100 for the plastic you carry, and must bring back the plastic items to get back the ₹100. PLEASE DO NOT LITTER IN SUCH BEAUTIFUL PLACES. You wouldn't let the public litter wastage in your house would you?
A simple easy trecking Must bring energy dring,it must be need. Go by light raining time is good There will be fully greenish. Don't hope that shop on hilltop, that will be closed however.

Chandragiri Fort is a wonderful spot nestled in the scenic landscape of Kasaragod. As you step into the fort, you're greeted by breathtaking views of the Chandragiri River flowing into the Arabian Sea. The fort's strategic location offers panoramic vistas that are simply stunning, making it an ideal spot to watch the sunset. The peaceful and calm atmosphere within the fort premises provides a perfect setting for relaxation and introspection. The fort is steeped in history, having been built by Sivappa Naik of Bedanore in the 17th century. As you explore the fort, you can almost hear the whispers of the past, with tales of the Vijayanagara Empire and the British East India Company. The fort's architecture and surroundings make it a great spot for photography, with plenty of opportunities to capture stunning images. However, some visitors have noted that the fort could benefit from better maintenance, with inadequate staff and facilities. Despite some areas for improvement, Chandragiri Fort remains a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts. The fort's tranquil ambiance and stunning views make it an ideal spot to unwind and connect with nature. While the road leading to the fort needs improvement, the scenic views and historical significance make it well worth the trip.
A beautiful historic fort overlooking the confluence of the Chandragiri River and the Arabian Sea. The place offers stunning panoramic views, especially during sunset. This is a small fort when compared to Bekal, but it has its own charm and peaceful atmosphere. There is some parking available just down the road, making access easier. The area is quiet with lots of greenery around and perfect for photography.
A beautiful historic place. You can see an amazing panoramic view of Chandragiri river and it's surroundings from the top. But the authorities are not making use of it. I guess just for name sake some staffs are coming and sitting there and exactly at 5PM they close the gate and leave the place. If you want to have a visit, be there at least by 4:30PM. This will be an amazing sunset spot where people can come, sit, chit-chat and enjoy the beauty of the fort if managed properly. But who cares! How can some one enjoy a place in harsh sun light in the afternoon? Government office timings won't work out here. This has to be opened at least till 7PM.
Boxy Hilltop Fortress Sited Above The Chandragiri River Offering Dramatic Sunset Views...
Wasted time searching for the fort, the roads leading to the fort need maintenance, won’t feel like it’s a fort, in a residential area. There’s no signage on the entrance, in fact there’s a small opening with chained blockades which anyone can easily miss while driving. Parking is on the narrow road side, bigger cars will have problem. Free entry, Once inside one can see the Chandragiri river and part of Arabian Sea, fort is not maintained well. Bekal fort is larger and better maintained.

No one knows exact date of construction, while it was renovated in 18th century, one of the oldest mosque in india sofar.... two modern structures have come upon both sides of the mosque, this camouflage makes it difficult to identify the old structure built with rosewood pillars ... very well maintained till date.
Beautiful and historic mosque, believed to be one of the oldest in India, initially built by Malik Ibn Deenar in the 7th Century and renovated in 18th Century. Now two new structures built on both sides for protection and space. Has separate prayer hall for ladies as well. Has the tomb of Malik Deenar. Maintained well, the architecture with Kerala style roofs, carved wooden beams, marble and cushion floorings add to the charm. People of all faith can visit, but maintain the sacred ambience, dress modestly and remove footwear before entering. Could see people sleeping/taking rest in main hall and chatting. There’s enough parking space and seating area in the front. Drinking water, restrooms are also available.
The Malik Deenar Mosque is one of India’s oldest and most historically significant mosques, believed to have been established in 624 AD. Visiting this mosque was a truly serene and spiritual experience. It’s not just a place of worship but a historical monument that beautifully reflects Kerala’s cultural heritage. A serene and spiritual place with beautiful architecture. A must-visit historic mosque in Kasaragod.
Masha allah one of oldest masjid in India , Namaz facility for ladies also
The Malik Deenar Juma Masjid in Thalangara, Kasaragod, is one of India's oldest mosques, believed to have been built in the 7th century by Malik Ibn Dinar, who is credited with propagating Islam in Kerala. The mosque, which features a mix of traditional Kerala and Islamic architectural styles, has undergone several renovations, with the original 7th-century structure expanded over time. It houses the tomb of Malik Ibn Muhammad, a descendant of Malik Ibn Dinar, and is a major pilgrimage site, especially during the annual Uroos festival.
When we enter the compound of masjid we get the positive feel. And the Masjid was outstanding by its architecture and its size.
Malik Deenar Juma Masjid in Thalangara is truly a gem. The moment I entered, I felt enveloped in peace. The ancient marble floors, remnants from Mecca, and the beautifully carved wooden beams echo centuries of devotion. The architecture with its Kerala-style sloping roofs and Arabic inscriptions made it a joy to explore. As a place of worship, it radiates serenity; as a heritage site, it invites awe. The nearby sea breeze, the artful dargah, and the sacred ambience make it a profound experience. A must-visit for anyone seeking spirituality, history, and architectural beauty.
