A monastery from the 10th century, an interesting architecture. A side Chapel from roman times seems to be the oldest part, most others have been altered in baroque style. Still original from the outside. There is a nice view of sunset from here and a souvenir shop. The latter sells also farming products from the minks, such as honey and wine.
Great discovery, unmissable! Enchanting in his simplicity yet elaborate decor. If you find it closed, try to knock or ask the museum nearby, they might help you find the guardian to open it or inform you about the schedule. The ones on the door did not seem correct to me. At the beginning of June, during the week, it was tourist-free. It was a marvellous and peaceful moment. The abbey was founded in 1004 by St. Nilus of Rossano, a monk of Byzantine descent. It has remained in continuous operation since then. It is the only one of the Italo-Greek-Byzantine monasteries that has survived. Most of them gradually fell into decadence and were seized by the Kingdom of Italy when it secularized religious orders in 1866.
A Christian orthodox monastery, since 1024. Impressive structure very well maintained. Beautiful view even at night!
Absolutely stunning, there’s a super nice church in the inner courtyard that you can visit too!
More than 1000 years of history and magnificently looks like a fortress!
This monastery is one of the only three monasteries with Greek Orthodox Mass rite in Italy, with more than 1,000 years of history (it was founded by the monk S. Nile in 1004). This place is a fine blend of bizantine, Baroque, medieval art dominating the breathtaking scenery of Grottaferrata, at a few km away from Rome. Easy to reach, definitely worth to spend a couple of hours here!
Little gem of a church, Abbazia San Nilo, the last of the Byzantine-Greek monasteries of Italy. It's feels very spiritual and amazing icons and frescoes. Worth the visit and one of my favourite churches in rome
An ancient Abbey built on the ruins of an older Roman Mansion, some says that this ol d Roman Mansion was the legendary house of Cicerone that has never been found. The Abbey has been founded in 1004 a.D. and surrounded by a fortress in the late middle age to protect its treasures. A visit is a must if you find yourself in the neighborhood... Plus nearby you can find some really special for good and genuine food

(Translated by Google) The Alfellini Cinema was my hometown, where I developed my personal taste, and where I escaped from lunches with relatives. Today it reopens under new management, bringing a new lease of life to its three theaters. With its refined cultural offerings, the Alfellini stands out from other theaters, which are limited to purely entertainment. Here, culture is at home, with only three theaters. During the week, there will be a packed program with more than six films on offer. This is something never seen before, and it's incredibly valuable in such a barren setting. Thanks to Davide and all the people who work there for making a dream come true!
(Translated by Google) It looks like it's fallen from Toyland. Truly picturesque and charming. Hence 5 stars. Technically speaking, the theaters are good, but not excellent. The sound is very good, I didn't expect that. The screens are good. The parking outside isn't the best, but since you're in Grottaferrata, you can take a nice stroll through the narrow streets. Prices are better than those of the super theaters. Worth a try. (Original) Sembra piovuto dal paese dei balocchi. Veramente pittoresco e affascinante. I schermi buoni dai.

Really cool for kids, and relaxing enough for parents.
Very small park mainly for little children. Staff is rude and shows they don't want to work or even stand up. They clearly don't want to work with or for foreigners. If you are a tourist, read the other reviews from foreigners and don't go there. When you read answers to some recent tourists' reviews, you see a mix of scorn and racism. Just indecent!
Nice thrilling adventure for grown ups and kids. Personnel is professional and price is fair.
(Translated by Google) An unforgettable experience between nature and adrenaline! I had a fantastic day at ViviAvventura and I can only recommend it to everyone, adults and children! The park is surrounded by greenery, perfectly maintained and offers routes for all levels: from the simplest for children and beginners, up to the most adrenaline-filled ones for those who love to test themselves. The staff is highly trained, always smiling and attentive to safety: they explain everything clearly and are always ready to help you along the way, and the organization is impeccable. A real panacea to get away from the routine, have fun in the open air and experience a day full of emotions! I will definitely return and recommend it to friends and family. Well done! especially the staff!👏🥳 (Original) Un’esperienza indimenticabile tra natura e adrenalina! (Translated by Google) We went there on our way back to Rome from Ariccia, almost by chance, it was a very interesting discovery. Easily accessible, the road signs are explanatory, parking is convenient. The abbey has its own particular charm both outside and inside where I was able to witness an Orthodox rite. I recommend a visit to admire a cross-section of Byzantine and Baroque art.
(Translated by Google) Small museum set up in the monastery of the Abbey of San Nilo to preserve and raise awareness of various artefacts linked to the history of the abbey. The historical importance of the artefacts as well as the beauty of these and some rooms is indisputable. Unfortunately the descriptions are too short and often the individual piece is described in its obviousness without explaining its importance: for example, the text (nor even a translation) of the medieval inscriptions is not reported which would certainly help to better understand them. Furthermore, the opening is scheduled only on public holidays, a real shame. In any case, it remains an essential stop to learn about the history of such an important monastery. The guided tours included in the ticket price are appreciable.
(Translated by Google) Small but very interesting museum, inside the garden of the fortress that contains the Greek abbey of San Nilo in Grottaferrata. Composed of 8 small rooms with an informative video on the various changes that the abbey/fortress has undergone since its construction and which contains historical pieces that describe this path. It costs only 5 euros and was a pleasant discovery. The only flaw is that you cannot pay with a card. In the area you can easily park the most paid ones. There was no queue and there was not much coming and going so it will be a very pleasant visit. The garden before the entrance to the museum is enchanting, the abbey is spectacular even though they were rehearsing for a wedding and therefore we could not take photos or even visit the crypt inside, a shame. I also recommend going up to see the library.
(Translated by Google) The real discovery of this monastic complex isn't the abbey itself (sorry...it didn't thrill me...beautiful but not spectacular) but its small archaeological museum, actually established about a century and a half ago with the first artifacts discovered in the area and subsequently renovated. The collection, the fruit of the expertise of several monks, is housed in the Renaissance rooms (one stunning one is even frescoed) of the Palazzo del Commendatario and is displayed chronologically. Open only on Fridays and Saturdays (and the first and third Sunday of the month), it costs just €5 and consists of just a handful of rooms, the last of which is dedicated to educational screenings and activities. It begins with a series of Roman-era statues retracing two millennia of the area's history. The most astonishing feature is the reconstruction of the Hypogeum of the Garlands, discovered near the nearby Catacombs ad Decimum, which houses the sarcophagi and burials of Aebutia Quarta and T. Carvilinus Gemellus, father and son, respectively (the grave goods also include a precious gold and rock crystal ring). In the main hall, there are some fragments of medieval frescoes that survived from the abbey's restorations, as well as many stelae, including a stele dating to the late 5th or early 6th century BC, depicting a seated youth reading a scroll. There are also numerous marble artefacts, sarcophagi, portraits, including one of Alexander the Great and one of Constantine, and beautiful pieces of Byzantine and more recent art. It practically occupies the wall that runs along the corner of the structure next to the entrance door and overlooks the square with the statue of Saint Nilus. Absolutely not to be missed. Need some useful info? Then leave a like and check out our other reviews of Rome and beyond. Utili info? In addition to a religious soul and an absolute dedication to the Lord God, they also had a particular attention towards art and expressed this sense through the collection of artistic and architectural materials that over time. Even the commendator abbots delegated by the Pope to manage the abbey of Grottaferrata carried out a commendable job which was also reflected in terms of the architectural enrichment of the monastery and the church. Everything converged in the abbey museum, where finds of great value and artistic significance such as the hypogeum of the garlands, a tomb made up of two sarcophagi and the Attic stele with splendid funerary reliefs found hospitality and shelter in the rooms that compose it. such as the young man intent on reading. Of great value is the late fifteenth century marble predella depicting Christ "man of sorrows" between angels and saints The beautiful access portal to the narthex of the abbey has been recomposed and is clearly visible inside the museum. You are then entranced by admiring the fifteenth-century sculptural group of the Madonna delle Grazie in painted limestone, attributed to Giovanni di Biasuccio. A chalice-shaped refresher in painted majolica by Cardinal Farnese from the sixteenth century is beautifully displayed in a room of the museum together with silver chalices, pyxes, mortars, shells and tribals in embossed silver. Paintings reproducing the thirteenth-century frescoes of the abbey, a section of a fifteenth-century polyptych by Bicci di Lorenzi in tempera depicting Saints Benedict and Nicholas and a splendid cycle of frescoes, dedicated to the stories of the Roman leader Fabio Massimo, executed by the mannerist Francesco da Siena in the sixteenth century they embellish the various rooms of the museum.

(Translated by Google) Monastery in Grottaferrata A small miracle 30 minutes from Rome - an 11th century Greek monastery founded by Saint Nile. This is the last saint revered by both churches - Catholic and Orthodox, since already in 1054 there was a schism and the churches went their separate ways. Saint Nile of Rossan was born in Calabria in 910 into a Greek family; after the Arabs captured Southern Italy, he was forced to wander a lot to different monasteries. His stern and ascetic nature attracted people and monks to him, and he enjoyed authority among the powers that be. Thus, the Count of Tusculan gave him an abandoned antique villa in his domain, where Saint Nilus, already 94 years old, founded a monastery according to the Byzantine rite in 1004 and soon died. The monastery had a difficult fate - it was under the patronage of popes, three of whom were representatives of the Tusculan family), was the scene of constant hostility between emperors and popes, as a result of which it was attacked and plundered. At the same time, huge land holdings and favorable geographical location turned the monastery into one of the important pilgrimage centers. The new flourishing of the monastery is associated with the fall of Constantinople in 1453, when many Greek intellectuals were forced to flee the city captured by the Turks. Thus, from 1462, the monastery was headed by Vissarion of Nicea, who continued the library tradition established by Saint Nile, increased the collection of manuscripts and manuscripts, and generally carried out a significant reconstruction of the monastery. Further, the monastery was headed by representatives of the Rovere family and Colonna, Farnese, Barberini, Borghese, who contributed to the development and decoration of the monastery. The life of the abbey continued and even Napoleon’s capture of Italy did not affect Grottaferrata - it was decided to preserve the abbey as a unique center of Byzantine culture. In 1874, despite the policy of secularization of church lands, the monastery was declared a National Treasure of Italy, and the cult was preserved. Now the monastery is one of three centers of the Italo-Albanian Catholic Church, in which worship is carried out according to the Byzantine rite. 12 monks from the Basilian order perform services in Greek according to an ancient typicon of the 11th century, written by Bartholomew the Younger. The first thing that strikes you when entering the main temple of the monastery - the Church of the Virgin Mary - is an indescribable fragrance that is felt only in Orthodox Greek churches. The temple is built in the Romanesque style, the entrance is preceded by a deep columned portico, followed by a narthex, above an ancient wooden door with a richly carved marble portal - Deisis mosaic, all dating back to the 11th century. On the right is an ancient 11th century baptismal font (a copy, the original is in the museum). Inside, the church has three aisles, with a Greek iconostasis, but with Baroque elements preserved from numerous changes. In the center is the revered icon of the 12th century Byzantine master Hodegetria. In the triumphal arch, after reconstruction in the 20th century, a 13th century fresco depicting the Holy Trinity of the Fatherland type was discovered. On the sides it is framed by two mosaics from the 12th-13th centuries depicting the scene of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. The floor of the basilica was made in the Cosmatesque style in the 12th-13th century and is perfectly preserved. The interior of the basilica as a whole belongs to the restoration of the 18th century, when many mosaics and frescoes were lost. To the right of the entrance is the historical crypt of Ferrata, which gave the name to the monastery. The small square room made of dark volcanic stone dates back to the 5th century; perhaps there has been a Christian chapel here since the time of the ancient villa, and here, according to legend, St. Nile prayed and the Virgin Mary appeared to him with instructions to build a monastery. Another landmark of the church, the Farnese Chapel, was painted at the direction of Cardinal Odoardo Farnese in 1608-1610 by the young Domenichino. The cycle is dedicated to the life of the founder Nil Rossansky; in the faces of the characters one can discern portraits of the artist’s contemporaries Guido Reni, Guercino and others. The altarpiece in the chapel is the work of Annibale Carracci. The monastery museum is definitely worth a visit. 👌👌👌
