Bad Ischl

Bad Ischl is an Austrian spa town east of Salzburg. It’s known as a gateway to the Alpine lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut region. The Biedermeier Kaiservilla displays the chambers in which Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph l spent his summers. On the grounds, the Marmorschlössl, a tea house built for his wife, Empress Elisabeth, houses the Photomuseum, with exhibits illuminating the early years of photography.

Elegant & tranquil palace for at least 700 years, now a museum with imperial artifacts & fine art.

A beautiful place to visit. You pay entrance fee, but you can buy only for the park separately, or with the villa too. We just walked around the park and didn't go inside and it was totally worth it. Beautifully maintained park, I'd say probably even wheel chair accessible. Beautiful in autumn!
Kaiservilla exceeded all of my expectations. The tour was absolutely captivating — walking through the rooms and feeling the atmosphere of that era was like stepping back in time. It’s beautifully preserved and offers such a unique glimpse into imperial life. A delightful surprise was the Erwin Wurm exhibit on the grounds — unexpected, modern, and incredibly thought-provoking. The contrast between contemporary art and historical surroundings made the experience even more special. A special mention must go to the lovely lady working at the café. She was so kind and thoughtful, even offering to remake my tea so I could enjoy a fresh cup to go after the tour — such a simple gesture that made a big difference. While the guided tours are in German, the audio guide was excellent. I felt I received all the information I needed and could truly immerse myself in the stories and history. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the region — a perfect blend of culture, art, and genuine hospitality.
Visited on Sep 17, 2025. Sommer residence, unfortunately pictures of the interior were not allowed. Visit os only possible with a guided tour that lasts 45 minutes. Garden is really beautiful
I was expecting more to see, but the guide was perfect. What is really worth to see ist the garden and the exhibition of Ernest Wurm.
Loved the gardens with the art installations- and interesting village with British phone boxes and beautiful click!
The guided trip around villa lasts 45 minutes. It is in German but you are given headphones for the English narration. We went because we have seen the Empress series on Netflix. The gardens are pleasant but hilly.
Beautiful place to visit, another choice from Hallstatt and gosau
The Villa itself is beautiful but inside you can't make photos what is sad for tourists. The tour guide only speak German, but we got papers in our language so we can understand something but he spoke so much an we couldn't understand a thing of it. I really liked every room of the castle but because of the big crowd it was hard to see things, rhe only way was to stay behind and walk almost by yourself. But for the experience to German speaking people is worth it.

Gondola ride for panoramic alpine views of lakes & peaks, with hiking in nature reserve at the top.

Old but very charming cable car at the outskirts of Bad Ischl. No long lines to get on and the ride up the steep mountainside is great. The restaurant at the top is very good and the views are breathtaking. The hike up to Katrin is a bit more than moderate, so proceed with caution if you are not that fit.
When visiting the town of Bad Ischl in Austria, we did not miss this site either. The ascent by cable car to a height of 1640 meters is continuous with amazing views. At the top there are cozy corners to sit, there are restaurants and walking trails for walkers and those who are not. It is highly recommended not to miss it. We were in May 2025, perfect weather for hiking in a couple. For walkers, you can go up and down on foot, which is a bit challenging. When you buy a ticket at the entrance, ask for a daily parking ticket for the car to put above the steering wheel. There are plenty of parking spaces.
Very authentic cable car with various hiking trails on the top + terrace cafe with national cuisine. We tried the blue hiking trail - the shortest way up to the cross and it was amazing. We found the metal box with journal inside where everyone can leave a note - it was very touchy. The day was sunny and we enjoyed kaiserschmarrn and local beer on the terrace. Parking is free if you buy tickets up and down. Otherwise 5€ per day.
We climbed for 10 minutes. The view was amazing. We did a short part of the walking route. Worth every moment. There is a place at the top for a beer and a snack. There are clean toilets. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
A charming red cable car will take you to the mountain peak in about 30 minutes. The individual cable cars seats four persons and is pretty stable even in slightly windy conditions. The view on the way up is pretty nice and from the top is even more spectacular.
Don’t forget to pay after you park. There are two electric vehicle spots if you have an electric vehicle. Purchase your round trip ticket for the cable car and keep it with you. You’ll need to scan it each time for entry. It’s a 15 minute ride each way by cable car to Katrin. The cable car seats 4 at a time. There’s a platform with great views at the top and restaurant. If you hike down the platform, you’ll see the information cabin. Restrooms are at the bottom and top. It’s 1400 meters above sea level, with panoramic view of Salzkammergut. Which is an Austrian region of lakes and alpine on the northern edge of the Alps. We got lucky with the weather while we were at the top. Once we began to descend, it started raining. Make sure you check the forecast and webcams before you go. There’s not much to do up here but to admire the views and breathe the great open air.
Charming old cable car. We were allowed with our dog. Superb hikes once you reach the top
Quite a small operation with limited activity when you get to the top, but the views were amazing and the cafe at the top served some amazing strudel. Whilst we were there we watched as some Nordic skiers walked to the top which was seriously impressive. We really enjoyed the steep cable car ride up to the top and it was a good way to spend a couple of hours. If you keep your car parking receipt (€5), they’ll take it off the price of the cable car ticket.

We did a day visit just to the spa area, which is truly massive! Uncountable amount of swimming and playing pools, all salty and a really fun outdoor whirlpool winding river that you can travel through, being carried forward by the gentle current. Beautiful salt grotto imitation in there. Many saunas with great service, handing out free salt/honey/cream to treat yourself while in the sauna or steam room. They sell swimming gear at the front. Great for unexpected visits, too. There's a restaurant inside! open until 9pm.
Our visit was fantastic! We enjoyed the warm, salty water and the variety of pools. Buying a family ticket is the most affordable option. There's a lazy river that flows into a small cave with an artificial current, which is fun for both kids and adults. It's a good idea to bring your own towels, as renting them costs 8 euros each.
We visited the spa area for 4 hours. The place is beautiful and well-organized with lockers, changing rooms and showers. Everything is very clean. There is a large pool, with warm salt water and a jacuzzi, along the pool there are places with water currents. There are two hot outdoor pools, nice to bathe in when it's cold outside. One of the pools has a water current along a winding path, nice. We enjoyed it very much. Since we didn't bring towels, they charged us 17 euros for the use of two towels, which is a lot. I recommend coming with towels and drinking water, there are no drinking water facilities on site.
If you are a tourist like me: • Signs inside are mostly written in German, so if you don't speak the language it can get a bit confusing • You should be naked in the sauna (we didn't know it was mandatory, but maybe it's written somewhere) • On Thursdays the sauna is for women only until 1pm • There is a restaurant inside with very fair prices • Don't forget to bring towels or a robe • Validate your parking ticket before leaving so you don't have to pay for it There are several different saunas and pools, and our favorite was the outdoor one. Very relaxing. It's open until very late, so it's a great option to relax at the end of the day.
We visited therme and sauna few times already. We loved saunas here, many to choose from, clean, nice sauna ceremonials every hour. Lovely experience. If you go in the evening it is not crowded. ✨
Lovely experience! Agree with other reviewers that water could definitely have been warmer (could have been great to just have one pool with extra warm water—perhaps for adults only?!) but overall lovely visit. Really loved the lazy river!
Very unclear instructions for English only speakers. You may accidentally enter a nudist area. This is exclusively nude and not optional. I did not realise this (with hindsight perhaps this was obvious but having never been to one I did not know) and was stared at and approached by an angry customer. The staff should have made this clear, in my opinion. A full day ticket does not gain re-entry. The staff should have also made this clear, in my opinion. Towels are not included, another thing we weren’t made aware of. All in all, if you’re a strictly English speaker, ask more questions than I did.
This is the most expensive but not the best therme we have visited this trip. The pool area is nice with a pool and lazy river. But sounas are small and crowded.

Excellent kitchen with generous portions. Good selection both for vegans/vegetarians and omnivores. Fun drink selection. Well worth the 20 min hike up the hill from Bad Icshl. All-in-all better than expected and highly recommended!
Lovely food and friendly staff. Multiple well-labelled vegan options.
Attentive waitstaff, fancy & delicious food, rustic atmosphere, great view. Will be back!
Tip: You really really have to order a table up front or you’ll regret it. Nice view good food what more does one want? Well there’s a surprising twist later We went up there with your Kids from Siedlungs gasse and they where quite tired already but the Erlebniss pfad (Adventure path) gave them enough energy to go up the partly very steep gravely path (flip flops not advised). After ~15min we where rewarded with a beautiful view, a glorious restaurant and a wonderfully designed small playground. We arrived ~18:45 and got a seating with wonderful view. I won’t go into details and just say you need a reservation up front or you’ll always get reserved last even with small children. Personally, I found this very ignorant as well as the expectation that very one look into they’re facebooksite online to know this before you go for a small walk. You won’t believe it took so long even few Guests that we didn’t even get desserts. Closing time 21:00. OMG! It’s a beautiful spot and good food but be sure you to have a reservation or you have a extremely bad service by design. While the place easily could be 5 star our customer journey was definitely a 1 star experience.
Amazing place with nice plating for desert !👍☀️♥️🌼
(Translated by Google) It was a very pleasant little excursion. I particularly enjoyed the sensory path during the hike – easy to do even with a dog, and you'll be at the castle in 20-30 minutes. The observation tower is free, and even the telescope is free to use! A truly amazing place – I highly recommend it!⛰️☺️ (Original) Es war ein sehr angenehmer kleiner Ausflug.

Very interesting museum, full of information, nicely presented. I would strongly recommend to pop in if you are nearby.
Very helpful the museum and the exhibitions were really good
Good place to visit when in Bas Ischl, especially during bad weather.
Fantastic little museum. Well worth a visit. Great gift shop.
Only really suitable for German-speaking visitors, and a little dry.
A bit out of date, could need renovation
(Translated by Google) To mark Bad Ischl's European Capital of Culture, the museum in the historic Hotel Austria was given a complete makeover and redesigned. The results are impressive: it's truly worth seeing, informative, attractively designed, and with attention to detail. Whether before or after your obligatory visit to Zauner, a visit to the museum is a must!

Nice collection of vehicles and aircraft from different time periods. A recommended visit if you were passing by.
Very nice museum. However, the outside on the back is under construction, and they have just lumped almost all the aircraft together on one side, so many aircrafts are obscured by the other ones.
Very nice and special museum. Recommended.
The museum has some good items on display like the Ford GT and Alfa Romeo Montréal. Also some firetruck, military vehicles, bikes, and even planes. Inside the museum is okay, but it's just a barn. Such a shame that the aircrafts outside are in a bad shape and sitting there to rot away. We had to pay €12 pp. Which I think it's a little too much for this museum. We Finnished it in less then 15 minutes.
Small looks like private museum. It was sad not to see any visitors as they really have good stuff to show. Aircraft outside are not good maintained and it is a little bit sad as they have very good assets to show.
A bit expensive for what it is, but lots of fun! Meant to be a wet weather day, but only ended up being there for an hour!
Nice museum, but only inside. The old planes outside are left to fate, so the weather has destroyed them mostly.
10 euro is a bit much for one hall. There are nice models of tanks and ships, few MIGs and some motorcycles. It all can be seen in 30 minutes.
