Picturesque, hilltop remnants of a 12th-century fort where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner.

A very atmospheric place! There are several paths leading up to the ruins, which is quite convenient. The view of the Danube is simply wow. Bright green lizards crawl everywhere — so beautiful, it’s like they’re there just for the photos! It feels like stepping into a fairytale from the Middle Ages. I highly recommend it for a walk and unforgettable impressions. 🦎
The village is pretty, the castle is a bit steep climb. Didn't go all the way as we were there on a hot day with a kid. But went close enough to take a few pictures
I love me some history. Great views. After a hike up the hill you're rewarded with panoramic views. A must do in my opinion
We visited there whilst on a Scenic River cruise. It is a solid walk up the hill from the village. Steps are uneven and in some parts no steps at all. Wear good footwear. Once on top. The Veiws are sensational and the walk is well and truly worth it. Look at the cell where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned for some time during the crusades.
Amazing place, full of history - from the 12th century, and famous for having captive Richard the Lionheart - he was captured on his way back to England from the Holy Crusades. View of the Wachau Valley and Danube River. Wear good shoes as path is steep and rocky. Not for prams or wheelchairs. Full of tourists during the Spring (especially when it is apricot bloom season) and also summer.
I took a day trip out of Vienna to dürensteinand and I loved the castle. It's about 20-30 minutes walking to the top of the castle and it's definitely must-do. The view was outstanding, we sitted there for an hour because we didn't want to leave this magical place. Here some pictures
Although reaching the site takes some time and effort, it is well worth visiting to experience the breath of history. This is where King Richard the Lionheart once stayed. Along the path to the castle, informative installations offer insights into medieval politics and events, with a particular focus on the legendary imprisonment of Richard the Lionheart. Moreover, from the summit, there is an extraordinarily scenic view over the Danube and the charming town of Dürnstein.
What a fabulous hidden gem. We only learned of this place through a chance encounter with a local in a Vienna bar. The castle well worth a visit for the scenic views and accessible ruins. By 'accessible' I mean it's possible to climb on the walls; there are no safety barriers and access is unrestricted, the steps up the hill require some fitness, but the reward is a beautiful view of the Danube and area.

Beautiful views from the top of the hill. Clean little town, full of history.
Beautiful! A must visit on the side of the Danube River. Lots of apricot buys in the local shops!
It worth to pay the entry ticket ! Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this incredible place. You will learn a lot about the history and feel the Divine connection on the church.
A step back in time. Bike riding throught the vineyards is something special, a must do, as is a walk around the town afterwards. A must stop location.
wonderful little small village outskirt of Vienna,1.30 hr drive..wear sports shoes if you plan to hike up to the Ruin Castle,it is a steep hike, but i advice you to just do it as the view is breathtaking.
Beautiful place, full of history. Museum and the views from the church are great!
Lovely walk up and surrounding village. Great view
The blue church in Dürnstein is absolutely stunning. Its bright color makes it stand out in the town. The baroque architecture is elegant and detailed. Inside, the decorations are beautiful and well-preserved. The church has a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. It is a great spot for photography. The location near the river makes it even more picturesque. Visiting this church gives you a sense of the town’s history. The staff there are friendly and informative. I highly recommend stopping by if you are in Dürnstein.

100% recommend their 8 wine tasting package (€10)! Tasting of beautifully crafted dry white wine using local grape varieties. Staff was friendly and informative!
My husband and me had a vineyard tour including wine tasting. It’s such a great experience! The tour guide is very knowledgeable and friendly. We learned so much about the vineyard history.
Went on a private tour of the winery. Shout out to Martina for being an awesome host! Such an experience walking through the vineyards, the palace, and the cellar. After which comes the usually tastings. Would recommend anyone to go for this tour!
Thank you for Anja! You were a great host. We have learned a lot from the Domäne and the wines. Highly recommended!
We did the 8 wine tasting for 10€ which was amazing value for money! Christopher spoke excellent English and gave us lots of information on each wine and spares it to our personal taste. Would definitely recommend doing this if you are in Dürnstein!
Christopher guided us through a lovely experience of tasting wine and learning about the styles of wine and wineries in the area. There are no views from the winery, no restaurants and no tours of the property. The winery boasts of its highly awarded whites.
Blonde lady was rude when I asked about how to do the wine tasting. Waited fifteen minutes but ended up leaving as no further explanations forthcoming of wait or process.
We visited the winery in August 2024. Although we booked the day before without availability issues, booking in advance is still recommended I would say. We paid 18 euro for each ticket. Tours happen every Friday and Saturday from 2pm to 3:30pm. The cellar visit and the tasting are only guided and the downside of it is that they are in German. However the guide, was explaining to us few things in English right after she explained in German, which was very handy. On the tasting you get to try four wines plus some bread. They are friendly and the visit to the cellar is really cool. After the tasting there's a shop with very reasonable prices.

Lovely place for you to have a great local experience. The food has great flavor with great size proportions. You can actually feel that is homemade cooking with organic ingredients. Is a family owned place with a beautiful history and ambience. Totally recommend this place!
wine and kraut was divine. affordable. friendly. lovely. local. would definitely
Very nice place in Dürnstein to eat. They have a nice menu offer. Not the largest but perfect to find something for all tastes. Mostly traditional food options. Their prices are very competitive in comparison to other similar restaurants around Dürnstein. They have a nice terrace outside for Summer but sitting inside is also nice, since they have decorated it cozy. Their service was friendly and fast. The food we ordered was very tasty and the portions were very nice. Relation price-quality very good. Would definitely go there again when we are in Dürnstein again. This place is cash only!
We stopped here for lunch while riding our bikes along the Danube river. Highly recommend! We ordered the goulash soup and wursttrilogie and both were delicious!
It's in a great location, nice atmosphere, open till late. It seems that a lot of locals go there. Good selection of beers and wine. I think some of the food we got there were ready-made microwaved meals.
Very good food! Didn't expect to get such good service and decent prices in the center of such a tourist town! Highly recommended!
Wonderful little place, with delicious food, outstanding wines and really reasonable prices! We enjoyed the food, the staff was really friendly and nice, and the place was filled with locals! Definitely recommend the Riesling!
That Surschnitzel. Wow. I ordered it having no idea what it was, and so thankful I did! The tasty rich porkiness was amazing. I keep fantasizing about that rich red tasty pork. Haven't found another one to compete.

We had a wonderful time on the water with Gregor and his team. The equipment was great; they were very friendly and the route and length of the trip perfect for families. Thank you! It was great.
(Translated by Google) We went on a great and eventful company trip with Kanu-Wachau! Well-organized raft tour on the Danube from Schwallenbach via Weißenkirchen (wine tasting) and Rossatz to Oberloiben. Absolutely recommended! (Translated by Google) Aloha Feeling in the Wachau I've been to Greg's in Loiben several times – it's always a highlight! Casual beach vibes, a relaxed atmosphere, and top-notch SUP boards for self-paddling or guided tours through the beautiful Wachau. (Translated by Google) I came with my own SUP to ride on the Danube for the first time. Good explanation of the peculiarities of flowing water with many important tips. Greg also provided me with his SUP belt for the leash. After a bit of practice against the Danube current, Greg took me up the river to Schwallenbach in his VW bus. The subsequent SUP ride along the very beautiful route through the Wachau to the Kanu-Wachau Base in Oberloiben was a comfortable 3 hours (including a few swimming stops). I'd love to come back!
(Translated by Google) Four of us (2 adults and 2 children) went to Greg's introductory stand-up paddling course. Greg is super easy-going and a really good teacher. As a beginner, we went on a tour on the open Danube immediately after an hour! Price performance is also right!!! We would recommend this course at any time! Preis Leistung stimmt ebenfalls!!! Wir würden diesen Kurs jederzeit weiterempfehlen!
(Translated by Google) Great first introduction to stand up paddling with lots of important tips. Finally, we ventured onto the Danube! (Translated by Google) Great Danube. A place for a light rest in the Wachau Valley (Original) אחלה דנובה.
(Translated by Google) I can only agree with the review with the attitude of robber barons. A one-way trip per person with an e-bike costs €7!!! That for 5min. Each Rhine ferry costs half. The wheels are also handled quite roughly. The “ferryman” wasn’t very forthcoming either.
(Translated by Google) A real Danube mill, solar powered, environmentally friendly and safe. The ferrymen are informative, helpful and have mastered their difficult craft. We enjoyed a great crossing with a wonderful view of Dürnstein!
(Translated by Google) Richard the Lionheart would be held in Dürnstein in order to extort a ransom. And robber barons still seem to be anchored in Dürnstein today. If crossing the Danube with a bike 6 km previously costs 3.50 euros, it quickly becomes 5.50 euros in Dürnstein. The historic ferry is not necessarily designed to transport bicycles. And the handling of the wheels is also not very squeamish.
(Translated by Google) We have booked a Watstein Zille for 12 people with wine tasting on board. Great experience! Up to Spitz at almost full throttle and then let yourself drift down comfortably with the current and enjoy beautiful Veltliner and Rieslings. I can only recommend it!
(Translated by Google) A great experience! From here you can see Dürnstein from its most beautiful side. The ferryman helped us with our bikes and was very friendly. I can't imagine that he isn't, even if you treat him in a friendly way. (Original) Ein tolles Erlebnis!
(Translated by Google) When translating, I was informed that the last return journey was at 6 p.m. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't that good, so we got to the ferry at 2:30 p.m., which was lucky because there was a note there saying that there was no ferry service between 3 and 6 p.m. that day. According to the plan, operations would be from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., but deviations are possible.
(Translated by Google) We had booked a Zille at 6 p.m. After no one showed up, we asked and were told there was a half hour delay. After half an hour we called again and were told in a very unfriendly manner that it would take another half hour because there were problems with the staff. Of course that can happen, but rudeness and no apology are very annoying.
