Stari Grad

Stari Grad is a town on the northern side of the island of Hvar in Dalmatia, Croatia. One of the oldest towns in Europe, its position at the end of a long, protected bay and next to prime agricultural land has long made it attractive for human settlement. Wikipedia.

This is simply the best bike hire experience I’ve had in Croatia in 15 years. It is a pleasure to hire bikes from people who love bikes and have raced them. They know what they’re doing and have a passion for the sport. They want you to enjoy it too. Other hirers are just a business, cheap bikes, poorly maintained, lucky if you can access all the gears. Hvar.life have new bikes of good quality and well maintained. You get a puncture repair kit so your day doesn’t end in a long walk or taxi ride if you hit a sharp. Dealing with them in advance by email was easy and straightforward. They gave good advice on where to ride. I cannot recommend them too highly.
This is related to bike service. Repair was done in time, but clumsy with lost parts, without telling me they lost parts, and with quick release mechanism out of service. What they did tell me was, that it is possible the front wheel will fall off, if not adequatly tightened. This tightening caused front wheel not to roll properly, but with quite a resistance. Unfortunately what had to be a simple tire change, become a possible disaster
Extremely recommend if you are visiting Hvar! The owner was really nice and forthcoming. The bikes were in really good shape, without any technical problems. Had an amazing bike ride with wonderful scenery. Definitely visit if possible!
Kosta was magnificent and was the best tour guide ever. He answered all of our questions and was so knowledgeable about the towns, the history, and the bikes and our safety with the bicycling. I absolutely recommend the guided bike tour with the wine and lunch. 5/5
Great bicycle trip with Kosta! Nice pace stopped a few times for pictures wine and lunch. Great local business easily accessible from Hvar
Kosta led us along an unforgettable route today through the vineyards and olive groves and several charming towns. The UNESCO protected dry stone walls divided the area and lined some roads. Included: adventure, beauty, a leisurely stop for wine tasting and of course a savory slow roasted lunch. All were so delightful. HVALA!!
This was truly an incredible biking experience and the beautiful landscape and colors of the sea were breathtaking!!! Our guide was amazing and so very kind and firsthand also so fun and helpful! A perfect tour and a perfect way to see the island and taste the wine and cuisine! 5 stars!! Cathy Axvog
Ricardo‘s operation is excellent. Excellent bikes and he has a standalone app on the bike to take you around the island. Great place to bike on an E bike.

Great place to visit! Everything is clean, the atmosphere is welcoming, and there were no issues at all. Highly recommended! Place is completely safe without engineers and doctors. ♥️
Very little to see for the €5 per person entry fee. Not really worth the effort. The “pond” with the fish, plus the olive and grape press are nice -but things you can see elsewhere. I thought we would be able to get inside the fortress, but unfortunately no. There certainly is a lot more that could be offered to visitors in order to justify the cost and effort to get to Stari Grad to see this.
It is very nice, but max 20-30 min is enough to see everything. Actually you can go only into the garden. But that is nice. I recommend it. Dogs can also go in.
I could see myself in this very place few centuries ago. 😍 Beautiful place, full of plants, birds and fish. Relaxing, as the summer villa should be.
Amazing small streets full of ancient building, Town full of history. Stronger recommended 2be visited. Try awesome icecream. It's so delightfull
5€ per person is CRAZY! There is nothing to see if not the pool with fishes and the garden. Nice but not at this price! Plus it is cash only!!!!
If you actually care about the history, and read the pamphlet, even ask the person (who’s really knowledgeable) on the entrance something, you can learn a lot. My favourite part was the “toilette” with the great text above it.
Beautiful place to visit. A must if visiting Stari grad

A landscape full of history… beautiful vibes here… and the ancient town picturesque and a cosy atmosphere
This is UNESCO World heritage protected site as one of the rare examples of intact agricultural landscape made by Greek colonists when they took this beautiful bay from local population and leaving to them rest of island apparently. I would like more investment (EU funds of course) but even like this is it perfect place for bike or walking tour. You can reach it from Stari Grad and it stretches almost to neighboring beautiful small towns of Jelsa and Vrboska. In spring you can find delicious asparagus here in great quantity. And try to avoid high summer as it can be really hot here if you are not near sea. Fifth star is missing as it should be maintained much better but this is place to see when visiting amazing island of Hvar as it is unique place indeed.
E-biking through this beautiful plain was one of my favorite activities in Stari Grad! If you visit in the summer, particularly a hot day, I'd recommend exploring the trails this way. We rented e-bikes from Hvar Life and it was just a short trip down some quiet roads to get to the landscape from there. There's many paths to explore, but if you get hungry Hora Hvar is nearby for you to enjoy some farm-to-table food.
Gorgeous little town with lovely shops and seaside
Fun time tasting their good wines with explanations on the process and varietals used. Also taken through the olive oil and lavender production processes.
Get lost in it and feed your soul 🌟 explore old routes and hidden corners. Find prace - the best in spring and autumn 🦋
Interesting and beautiful.
Cycling definitely get you excited.

The church is an outstanding example of Dalmatian baroque with good furnishings, decorative work and paintings. Interestingly the first church on the site was Hvar Cathedral. The church has a detached bell tower which is designed in a curious example of Gothic Survival. There is a small entrance fee. The church closed for the siesta.
Does anyone knows which is the correct number or email address?
Great place to visit! Everything is clean, the atmosphere is welcoming, and there were no issues at all. Highly recommended! Place is completely safe without engineers and doctors. ♥️
Nice church from 1607. It is interesting that before this one there was much older one which was cathedral before bishop was relocated by Venice to Hvar. There is nice square in front of it where many events are held. And bell tower is not connected to the church.
The Church of Saint Stephen is a Baroque church. Its construction began in 1604, where in the 12th century, the first cathedral of Hvar was located. The church houses the triptych by F. De Santacroce (1516-1584) and the black marble altar of Santa Croce by A. Bruttapelle from 1773, while the bell tower, separate from the church, dates back to the 18th century. The ground floor of the bell tower was built with stones from the walls of the Lighthouse and, ''where once was the entrance to the city, now there is the entrance to the bell tower'' (Written in Latin, at the entrance). The bell tower is also carved with a relief of a Roman galley.
I don't think it's fair to pay for just entering a church. Almost everywhere else you can freely enter in a catholic church, many of them really impressive. It gives you the sense that they are trying to get money for absolutely everything, and that's not a nice experience.
Old and full of history. Visit it!

Luca was FANTASTIC. best server we had during our entire stay! he was so kind and attentive. the drinks were amazing! however, we would come back just for the service!
Lampedusa Bar in Stari Grad is the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the island vibe! The cocktails were absolutely amazing — creative, refreshing, and made with top-quality ingredients. We especially loved the signature drinks, which were both beautiful and delicious. The staff was incredibly friendly and easygoing, making us feel welcome from the moment we sat down. The location is unbeatable — right by the sea with a stunning view, especially at sunset. The music, the atmosphere, the whole vibe — it’s the kind of place where time slows down and you just want to stay for “one more drink.” Lampedusa is a must-visit in Stari Grad. We’ll definitely be back for more cocktails and sunsets!
Thoroughly enjoyed our evenings drinking Margaritas, whilst watching the sunset & playing uno, We had to keep going back as my friend enjoyed them so much, they definitely know their stuff. Some evenings were livelier then others but there was always a good vibe. Really nice play list and Luka was a very attentive waiter who made you feel welcome. Highly recommend.
Nice atmosphere, during season it's almost always crowded. Good verity of drinks and cocktails, also they have their own signature ones. Drinks are nice and staff is friendly, and the prices for an island are okay.
Great modern bar with very interesting signature cocktails. Beer is good as well :) super friendly service, dog friendly.
I visited here 4-5 times, all in the morning except once. Each morning visit was pleasant but the one evening visit was terrible and ruined it for us. This was due to an inappropriate waiter which I later found is one of the owners. He was rude, creepy, and when confronted about his behavior he became even worse. The exact opposite of the type of person you want to represent your establishment.
Excellent cocktail bar serving all the classics as well as their own signature drinks. Really great quality drinks! Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Cash only.
Very nice bar for cocktails in the evening and coffee in the morning. Good service. The lady is lovely and remembered our other after a few days. Beautiful views of the marina. Great for people watching.

Nice little church
Wonderful place. Can't wait to comeback
The beautiful octagonal church of St. John (Sveti Ivan) has Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features, and is the cultural and tourist trademark of Jelsa. It was mentioned in the Libri gratiarum in 1463, when there were no other buildings around it. There was probably an earlier church on the site, and the present one acquired its Baroque features in the 16th century. The square and surrounding streets developed between the 15th and 18th centuries and form an architectural gem. Today, the church is flanked by larger buildings which stifle it somewhat, but comes into its own in summer, when cultural events are staged in front of it. (Hvar. A Guide to the Island)
Romantic place with a small lovely town
Very beautiful little church in a lovely setting.
Cool little church
The church and people from Jelsa, everything is fantastic. I'll come back.
