Stopped by Richmond Bridge and it’s a charming spot, perfect for a quick visit and some great photos. The historic stone bridge is picturesque, and the surrounding area is lovely with heaps of friendly ducks waddling around. It wasn’t busy at all, which made it nice and relaxing. The town itself is full of historic charm with plenty of nice cafes and eateries to enjoy. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!
The Richmond Bridge is a beautiful and historically significant spot, and definitely worth stopping by if you are visiting Richmond. Built in 1825 by convicted prisoners, this picturesque sandstone bridge spans the Coal River and stands as one of Tasmania’s oldest and most iconic structures. It is a wonderful place for a short walk where you can appreciate the combination of history, architecture, and natural beauty all in one scene. The surrounding landscape is peaceful and scenic, with friendly ducks waddling around adding to the charm of the place. Behind the bridge, you will find a lovely area filled with blossoms and colourful flowers, perfect for taking photos or simply sitting back and enjoying the view.
Title: Beautiful Historic Bridge Review: “Richmond Bridge is absolutely stunning and full of history. The architecture is beautiful, and the peaceful surroundings make it a perfect spot for a walk or photos. A must-visit if you’re in Tasmania!”
We stopped by Richmond Bridge and it’s such a charming little spot. The bridge itself is beautiful — old sandstone, historic, and surrounded by peaceful views. It’s great for a quick walk, some photos, and soaking in a bit of Tasmania’s heritage. The area around it is cute and easy to explore, and the whole place has a relaxed, small-town vibe. Definitely worth a short stop if you’re in the area!
DUCKIES! Such a beautiful small town with adorable duckies around. A lovely place to spend the afternoon with lots of greenaries and the duckies are an absolute gem! A very peaceful vibe. Absolute loved it and I came back from Hobart a second time during my short trip.
Richmond Bridge is over 202 years old, and it’s amazing to see how well it’s been preserved. I was so happy to walk around the area and take in its charm. The peaceful surroundings and historic feel made the visit even more special.
Richmond Bridge makes history feel beautifully immediate. Built by convict stonemasons in the 1820s, its sandstone arches still carry cars and walkers over the Coal River without fuss. From the middle of the span you get that classic view: willow trees dipping into the water, St John’s Church steeple rising just beyond the ridge, and ducks tracing lazy ripples below. Early or late in the day, warm light turns the stone a soft gold and reflections double the scene almost perfectly. Take a slow wander and the craftsmanship stands out. Hand-tooled chisel marks remain visible in many blocks, and a few stones bear the initials of the men who laid them nearly two centuries ago. Plaques at each end share the bridge’s backstory without overwhelming you, so even a casual stroll leaves you with a sense of the engineering challenge and the convict lives behind it. The surrounding parkland invites a longer pause. Grassy banks make an easy picnic spot, local swans drift by hoping for crumbs, and a short path leads to a vantage point ideal for photos. Parking lines the road near the bridge, public toilets sit a minute’s walk away, and Richmond’s bakery and cafés are close enough to grab a pastry or coffee before you settle in. Whether you visit for colonial history, photography or just a quiet riverside break, Richmond Bridge rewards every unhurried step.
Take a look on how beautiful this Bridge. I am so happy we ended up going until the Bridge when visitinha Richmond. Ohhhhh, it was perfect to take pictures and to see ducks and a huge blooming sakura just at the entrance of the Bridge walkway. You have to see it!

It's a very old site, haunted, oozing with suffering history and you can feel it through these old walls. My young son got a mysterious nose bleed as soon as he entered the Gaoler's residence (near the steps), started crying and said he felt weird and left! 😬
A must-visit piece of Australian history! I’m so glad the public can now access Richmond Gaol—it’s incredible to think this place was a private residence for so long. The site is beautifully preserved, offering a powerful glimpse into Tasmania’s convict past. The lady at the entrance was especially lovely and helpful—she shared some fascinating details about Richmond’s history that really enriched our time exploring the area. There were also some great activities for my 8-year-old to do while we walked through the jail—she had fun spotting things and ticking them off her scavenger hunt, which made the visit even more enjoyable for her. And just outside the jail, we found an excellent pie and pastry shop—perfect for a snack before or after your visit. Highly recommended stop if you’re in the area!
It was truly excellent. Rod, the staff member, was incredibly friendly, professional, and full of helpful information. The goal is breathtaking, with stunning displays that really wow you, and the condition of the building is impressive. We've driven past many times and are so glad we finally stopped to explore. The informative plaques inside beautifully tell the stories of the men and women connected to this place. The gift shop is packed with a wide variety of products—you'll love browsing through it. I’m not posting too many pictures because you really need to experience it for yourself. Keep up the fantastic work maintaining this gorgeous building and its grounds!
Being older than Port Arthur, the restoration is well done. Solitary confinement rooms where you can experience what it would have been like - dark and tiny. A piece of history captured in completion compared to ruins of other Gaols from original settlements. Worth seeing
It’s very small but the experience is very unique and interesting. Bit pricey for the experience but cheap otherwise... It’s a bit tricky, you will like it or maybe you will think it was a waste. We enjoyed it and found the experience alright. If you go there enjoy the Richmond town as a whole and then it will satisfy your enthusiastic mind. Thank you. Enjoy...
The oldest existing Gaol in Australia and it has been well preserved. Would have preferred a tour guide or maybe an audio tour but still thought it was worthwhile.
The restoration of this place is very well done, and it's amazing how much was able to be retained/restored when you compare it with other facilities from the same period. The self-tour was informative and there was plenty of information around the place. I appreciated the recreations to demonstrate what conditions would have been like.
Superb little gaol museum. Well worth a visit if you find yourself in Richmond. A completely different experience to Port Arthur.

I'd give 10 stars if I could. Stuart is an incredible host, the staff are all lovely, the animals are healthy and well loved. The scenery is gorgeous. You can feed beautiful cows, roos, all kinds of animals. The meerkat experience is fantastic. Our entire WA state masters team canes through and we had such a good time, we came back with our families. 10/10.
It was my wife and I second time visiting Tasmania visiting from Melbourne and first time visiting Hobart Zoo and Aquarium. Words cannot describe how amazing our experience was. From seeing all the animals and the newly addition aquarium and also being told there will be more in the future, we will definitely come back. I was told of the owner Stuart’s vision of the zoo and aquarium in bringing more animals and fish which excites me and can’t wait to come back. Being able to feed the animals was such a magical experience and something I will never forget. Lastly our first time feeding meerkats and that was a priceless and unforgettable moment for my wife and I. Special mention to Karinda for guiding us through the meerkat feeding experience, she’s such an amazing and lovely person who is so passionate about not only her job but importantly animals. We will definitely be back!
This zoo is located on a farm site. It is fairly easy to drive to and has a good variety of animals. adored the highland cows and the rare white lions. Little kids seemed to thoroughly enjoy animals as you can feed some of them. There is also an indoor kids playground. There is ample parking available. A small Cafe is located inside pricing is reasonable. Good experience, inexpensive and can now say I saw a Tasmanian Daredevil in Tasmania!
Zoo Doo was lovely. Some animal enclosure lack signage. Staff and volunteers are excellent and are happy to chat and share their experiences and knowledge. There is alot of work to upkeep the grounds, fencing so your work is endless so everything you do is appreciated. Gift shop is awesome and reasonably priced. Lots of parking and plenty of locations to sit watch the animals or kids play. Keep up the great work everyone.
We recently visited Hobart Zoo and Aquarium, previously known as the ZooDoo, and honestly had such a great time! It was a spontaneous little outing for us as a couple, and it turned out to be a really fun and wholesome way to spend a few hours. Admission is $37 per adult, which at first felt a little on the higher end for a smaller zoo - but once you’re inside, you start to see why Hobart Zoo and Aquarium is not a huge, commercial-style zoo- it’s more personal, interactive, and down-to-earth. It’s clear that they care deeply about the animals, and the whole experience feels thoughtfully curated. We spent about 2 hours walking around, and that was the perfect amount of time to see everything without feeling rushed. The layout is easy to follow, and you get up close to many of the animals. One of the best parts was being able to feed some of the animals using tokens that are $3 a pop - which you can buy only at the entrance with multiple stations to redeem them inside. Feeding kangaroos, cows, smaller animals like rabbits and guinea pigs and even some farm animals was such a fun touch, and would be especially exciting for kids. Although the Zoo is clearly geared toward families and larger groups (which makes sense, given how interactive and animal-focused it is), it still worked really well as a smaller outing for just the two of us. There’s something really sweet about wandering around, feeding animals together, and just enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. We saw lots of laughing kids and families having a blast, so if you’re thinking of coming with children, they’ll absolutely love it. A pleasant surprise during our visit was the newly added aquarium, which you’ll find through the café area. It’s a small but nicely done space, and a great little bonus to the visit. There’s even a small touch pool, which adds an extra interactive element - especially fun for kids, but honestly just as enjoyable for adults curious about marine life. It’s a quiet, calming space and a great addition to the overall Zoo experience. The café itself is also a nice spot to take a short break, with indoor seating and some outdoor views. It's perfectly located if you want to grab a coffee or snack before heading into the aquarium. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the animals looked well cared for. Enclosures were clean, and many of the animals seemed comfortable approaching visitors, especially during feeding. If you’re in the Hobart area and looking for something light-hearted, easygoing, and interactive - whether as a couple or with friends or family - Hobart Zoo and Aquarium is definitely worth a visit. It’s not a massive zoo, but that’s part of its charm. You leave feeling happy, and maybe a little more connected to the animals than at a larger, more commercial park. Highly recommend for a fun half-day activity. We’ll definitely come back again!
I'm thoroughly impressed with the recent upgrades they are truly impressive! The staff's warm hospitality makes the experience even more enjoyable. The aquarium is a major highlight, and I really enjoyed hand-feeding the animals and bird feeding. The gift shop offers a good variety of souvenirs or gifts for loved ones and the food at the cafe is delicious! I highly recommend this zoo.
We loved our time at this zoo! We were surprised by how fairly priced the tickets were and being able to interact with the animals at no extra cost. You can tell the zoo keepers love what they do and love their animals. So lovely to see. Thank you for an amazing experience!!
I recently visited Hobart Zoo and Aquarium (formerly Zoodoo Zoo) with my sister who was visiting from the US, and I wanted to give us an experience we couldn't get anywhere else. I'm so glad I splurged on the $750(AU) VIP encounter package for two – it was absolutely worth it! While I realize that it depends on how many others happen to sign up the same day, we were blessed to have a dedicated keeper for the two of us. The Incredible Encounters We participated in encounters with koalas, a black-headed python, cotton-headed tamarins, marmosets, a black cockatoo, meerkats, squirrel monkeys, servals, Tasmanian devils, and the highlight – the lion encounter with Lions Raw. Each experience was thoughtfully curated and genuinely special. Outstanding Staff Emma was our primary guide throughout the day and she was phenomenal. She ensured we learned fascinating details about each animal, never once making us feel rushed. Her passion and knowledge really enhanced every encounter. The lion experience was absolutely breathtaking. First we were able to feed them with tongs through the fence at the front of their habitat. Then Emma and Karinda (who was hilarious and wonderful – we could genuinely be friends!) took us behind the scenes to the lions' holding area. We were told about the safety protocols, the health care and enrichment activities for the lions. Then they set out the food and brought each one in. Hearing the lions vocalize up close – feeling the vibrations in my chest with only the cage between us and no plexiglass – was truly awe-inspiring and something I'll never forget. Jody at the front desk was also fantastic, answering all our questions and making sure we had everything we needed. The Owner Makes All the Difference What really impressed me was meeting Stuart, the new owner. When we stayed until the end for Lions Raw (4-5pm), he asked for feedback. I mentioned that we'd somehow missed the koala and squirrel monkey encounters, despite being told the package included everything. Without hesitation, Stuart personally took us to both encounters after closing time while the zoo was shutting down. His dedication, humor, and passion for the animals and his vision for the zoo really shone through. This level of customer service is rare and deeply appreciated. The Transformation It's clear Stuart is investing heavily in the zoo's future. New aquariums have been added, and construction is ongoing in various areas – all without interfering with the guest experience or animal viewing. The park is evolving beautifully and I can’t wait to see how it progresses. One Small Disappointment The only letdown was that the open bus ride through the paddocks (which allowed guests to pet and feed zebras and camels) is no longer offered. This was actually why I chose to return to this zoo after visiting in 2017. While you can still see these animals in the fields, the interactive experience is gone. Given the premium price we paid, I'd hoped this might still be available, but I understand changes happen under new ownership. It does sound like there is a plan to bring something back but in a different way. Final Thoughts Despite the one disappointment, this was an extraordinary day that my sister and I will treasure forever. The animal encounters were incredible, the staff was exceptional, and Stuart's commitment to both his animals and his guests is evident. If you're visiting Tasmania and want a truly memorable wildlife experience, I highly recommend Hobart Zoo and Aquarium. The VIP package is pricey, but for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it delivers. Thank you to Emma, Karinda, Jody, and especially Stuart for making our Tasmanian adventure unforgettable!

Attraction where visitors can walk through a miniature replica of Hobart as it was in the 1820s.
Slide 1 of 8
Love this small scale model representation of Hobart during the 1820's. The people including convicts and redcoats, families and animals and the bay with ships is a real must-do when in Richmond. Only 20 minutes from Hobart this little stop over is a must. Toilets & gift shop available.
Old Hobart Town is a delightful surprise tucked behind the main street of Richmond. The scale model recreates 1820s Hobart in impressive detail; you wander along winding paths while tiny schooners sit in the “harbour”, convicts push wheelbarrows and ladies in bonnets chat outside Georgian cottages. Informative boards at key spots explain the stories behind each scene, so you pick up pieces of Tasmanian history without feeling like you are back in school. Kids love hunting for the cheeky Tasmanian devil hiding among the figurines, and adults tend to linger over the craftsmanship in the sandstone facades and shingled roofs. The gardens around the model are well kept, adding splashes of lavender, rosemary and native grasses that frame the miniature streetscapes. There are plenty of benches if you want to sit and take it all in, and the looped layout means you can browse at your own pace without doubling back. Staff at the entrance are welcoming and happy to point out easy-to-miss scenes, like the bushranger ambush near the quarry or the tiny greyhounds racing beyond the city walls. Practicalities are straightforward. Parking is available on the adjacent side street, the gift shop stocks local books and postcards, and the site is mostly level, making it manageable for prams and wheelchairs. Tickets are valid for re-entry on the same day, which is handy if you want to duck out for lunch in the village and return for another look. As a compact blend of history lesson, garden stroll and model-makers’ showcase, Old Hobart Town offers something different from the usual heritage stops and is well worth the visit.
Old Hobart Town in Richmond is a very interesting and well-crafted attraction that offers a unique look into Tasmania’s past. The miniature models are impressively detailed, with carefully designed figures, buildings, and scenes that bring the early days of Hobart to life. The characters look surprisingly realistic, and if you take the time to look closely, you will notice many clever and amusing details hidden throughout the display. One of the most fascinating parts of the visit is realising that some of the buildings represented in the model still exist today in Hobart’s city centre. Seeing the models first and then spotting the real buildings later adds a special connection between history and the present day. The entry fee is slightly high, but when you consider the level of detail and the effort required to maintain such intricate models, it feels justified. It is clear that a great deal of time and care has gone into keeping the exhibit in excellent condition.
We visited a small town in Tasmania and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing, with beautiful scenery all around. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, take a deep breath, and just enjoy the moment. The locals were very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even more special. It’s definitely a great spot for a peaceful getaway — perfect for relaxing, daydreaming, or simply doing nothing at all. A hidden gem that’s worth a visit if you’re exploring Tasmania.
A Miniature Marvel Full of Heart The delightful Miniature Hobart in Richmond is pure magic. Every tiny detail bursts with character and cheeky charm — you can almost hear the laughter of the whimsical townsfolk frozen mid-mischief. It’s more than just a miniature world; it’s a love letter to imagination itself. But what truly touched me was the clear love and dedication between the creator and his son — a bond that breathes life into every tiny street and scene. Their shared joy and humour shine through in each playful vignette, making this enchanting little world feel alive. An absolute must-see — heartwarming, creative
A short drive from Hobart, this old town has been preserved beautifully. Quaint buildings and local produce in abundance. The beautiful Richmond bridge is stunning
I was one of 29 Carseldine Probus members who were on an extended holiday from Brisbane, Queensland to have the opportunity to visit Old Hobart Town. We were on day tour to Port Arthur Historical Site and passing through the township of Richmond stopped off to visit the historical Old Hobart Town. This is a unique multi-award winning model village that dispicts life in Hobart as it was in the 1820's. Hobart itself was named after Lord Hobart the then secretary of the state for the Colonial Department. John Sullivan was the under secretary. The colony remained part of NSW until 1825. The beautifully handcrafted work that has been done over a 3 year period by Andrew and John Quick is some of the most authentic that I have ever seen. Such attention to detail! Old Hobart Town is ideally located at 21a Bridge St,Richmond TAS 7025 and is definitely a great family friendly place to enjoy quality time. There are plenty of shops and cafes in this part of Tasmania and the tickets you purchase when visiting Old Hobart Town can be used during the day. Old Hobart Town is easily accessible to people with wheelchairs or mobility scooters being on the ground floor level. Toilets are located nearby with further amenities available in the township of Richmond. I will definitely be recommending anyone visiting this magnificent area of Tasmania drop by and take the time to enjoy visiting Old Hobart Town.
Amazing details and work has gone into creating this glimps of history really interesting to see how things looked. The bonsai myrtle trees are so beautiful The shop also has the most incredible artwork depicting different events from Tasmania history. Wonderful

My group had a wine and cheese pairing and owner Darren was amazing!! Darren is very down to earth and he could be working on the grounds one moment and explaining all the wine and cheese pairings the next moment! It’s a great family owned place and he told us the funny story of how him and his wife got the name of his vineyard, which took years for them to name! You have to visit to hear the story though!! It’s a nice mid-day or afternoon getaway place, where you can enjoy a quick bite to eat, sit with the ducks that waddle around and enjoy the views of a vineyard and pond! They also have a play area that the little ones can enjoy!
Great fun for the kids. Grab some duck food for some feeding frenzy experience. Absolutely would recommend for the kids while the kids at heart enjoy their “wine o clock”
A random winery pick turned out to be a hidden gem. Fantastic wine, food, location and staff (thanks Sammy and Sandy). The tasting platter and some shared desserts was ample food for 4. The guided wine tasting was delightful (particularly if you have the platter as there’s an interesting twist if Sandy passes on her advice). Sammy made us feel like family and made it a memorable afternoon. Don’t forget to feed the ducks before you leave - why should kids get all the fun!!
Puddleduck winery was recommend by one of our friends who had visited previously and we were not disappointed. Our wine guide "Emily" had a wealth of information and was very attentive to us! The selection of wines on the tasting palate was very good and we had the little local cheese platter too! And of course the lovely ducks! Highly recommend this lovely winery in Richmond.
It was a bit of a whim, on a day that turned too cold to pursue the walk we had planned. Our plan changed, we decided to visit Puddle Duck vineyard in the Coal Valley. It had been a few years since my last visit so I was excited to see what was available. Firstly, there was space inside, warm and cosy (perfect for this time of year in Tassie). Next up, the service was prompt and friendly, true Tassie style. Susie ordered a glass of Bubble duck vintage sparkling, I ordered the tasting paddle. The sparkling was so good Susie needed a second one. The tasting paddle included the Vintage (2022)Sparkling wine along with a sample of Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot noir (all from 2024). None of the wines disappointed and all were a lovely match with the delicious Bread olive oil and Dukkah, and the newly listed Pulled pork tacos. Got to love local done well. Thank you for your hospitality guys, see you again soon.
Beautiful vineyard to visit and one of the best homemade lasagna's ever. Love the duck theme of the vineyard, and especially love the Bubbleduck Sparkling wine.
The service here was so good! We randomly picked this winery to visit on our very last day in Tasmania, to fill in time before our flight home. We both had a tasting flight of wines, and some snacks to go along with them. The wines were lovely, as was the food. They also have a nice little lake situation going on right next to the seating area, so you're able to wander over after lunch and feed the ducks. Well worth a visit!
Came in for a wine tasting at 12pm on a Saturday. Was a bit disappointed that we couldn’t sit on the deck overlooking the pond due to an event. When we booked, there was no mention of this and most likely would have driven us to choose another place. When asked to choose the four wines out of six, I mentioned I didn’t like Chardonnay and would like to swap it for either of the two other choices. I wasn’t listened to and was instead told more about their Chardonnay. I felt pressured and awkward so just stuck with their recommendations. I didn’t end up liking the Chardonnay. My partner chose to swap out one of the wines and was told okay with no questions. The rest of the wines were nice. The ambience was nice. Going for a walk outside after and seeing all the ducks was lovely. Overall, an okay experience, though with so many wineries in the area we most likely won’t be back.

We had a nice wine and decided to track down the winery. The drive was very pleasant, even if we took a slight detour over the mountains. The winery itself was stunning, a nice quiet deck to sit on even for a busy day. The pizza selection was extensive with some delicious platters to accompany them. And a useful selection of wines. Nestled amongst the vines it was a great lunch stop. The tasting room looked brilliant but did require a booking.
Had a great experience doing a wine tasting here! Came for pizzas but we were a bit early, turned out for the best because the wine tasting was amazing, tried some new wines for me personally and had a lovely young guy who talked me through each wine and gave us some great recs for restaurants in the area too. Definitely recommend! The venue itself is beautiful too.
Second stop for our winery tour! Amazing wines they have to offer. Such a nice venue as well with the amazing views of the valley. The wines were top notch being the Syrah as the favourite! Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable!Highly recommend for anyone to visit and enjoy some of Tasmania’s finest quality wines!
Pooley Wines feels like stepping into the Italian countryside—such a charming and picturesque setting. Even on a busy afternoon, our server was incredibly attentive and took the time to answer all our questions with so much knowledge and care. The wines were superb, each glass full of character and beautifully made. We’re already looking forward to coming back, especially to try their wood-fired pizza next time!
Perfect day. Found it a little challenging getting a park but that is because it is a very charming spot. The service was fantastic, all staff were amazing very natural and accomodating. The food was lovely had two pizzas and the cheese board. In the wine tasting the woman was informative and friendly. Adjusted her pitch to our bogan personalities. It was my son’s first sample of wine and was a great introduction into the subtleties of flavours and what makes a great drop. We left with a bottle of wine. Thanks for a great day
My friend and I came in for a tasting at lunchtime on a weekday (12/11/25) in the Cellar Door. Firstly the entire venue is gorgeous. Beautiful views, plenty of tables outside and well decorated inside. The art was fun to look at. At $15 for 6 wines you truly can’t go wrong. They were all delicious — I only liked one slightly less (the rosé) but really, all were delightful. The young man who did our tasting was absolutely wonderful. Wine tastings can be awkward sometimes depending on who you get but he was friendly, knowledgeable and happy to engage. We enjoyed hearing about the wines from him and he seemed to genuinely enjoy his job. My one and only piece of feedback would be to please play some soft background music. It was dead silent in the cellar door and made trying to catch up with a friend interesting. Though, after some wine it didn’t bother us too much. My parents will be visiting from interstate soon and after trying other wineries in the area, I will definitely be bringing them here. Thank you for a great experience and I’m looking forward to returning.
We booked for the lunch and wine tasting during our day visit to Richmond. Everything about Pooley Wineries is gorgeous! The smell of wood-fired pizza greets you on entry and the lunch area looks out over a gorgeous farm at the top of Richmond. The wine tasting has a variety of selections. We did the 6-wine tasting for $15 and it is certainly worth the money, especially after having a delicious fresh pizza. ** EDIT: I should mention, we did the day trip to Richmond from Hobart without renting a car. The Pooley Winery is an easy walk from the Richmond city centre.
Had one of the best wine tasting experiences of my life here. Cory served us and he was fantastic with knowledge and letting us taste multiple wines. We ended up buying $$$$$$ Highly recommend this for a tasting especially with Cory - he is an asset to your team
