Staten Island

Staten Island is the southernmost of New York City's 5 boroughs. It is connected to Lower Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry, which runs across New York Harbor. Staten Island Zoo is home to kangaroos, birds of prey and snakes. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden features flower beds, Greek revival buildings and art galleries. Its grounds also include the Staten Island Children’s Museum.

It's a wonderful place. My daughter and I had a great time walking in the green park and seeing lots of interesting animals. All the animals are well-groomed and clean, and it's clear how much work goes into caring for them.
Visited the Staten Island Zoo and had an overall good experience. The grounds were well-maintained and most of the animal exhibits were interesting. However, I was disappointed to discover that the otter exhibit, which was one of my favorite attractions, was not operational during my visit. The enclosure was drained and the otters weren't visible anywhere. This was a letdown since the otters are usually a highlight. Despite this, the other exhibits were enjoyable and the wait times were reasonable. The zoo offers a nice variety of animals for its size, but calling ahead to check if specific exhibits are open might be a good idea if you're visiting for particular animals.
First time here with husband and 10 month old baby and we loved it. We got to see everything and it took us exactly 2 hours (with 1 bathroom break). Admission is $12 per adult, free for kids under 2. Wish the zoo was bigger and had more animals but I was actually pleasantly surprised with its current size, I thought it would be smaller and so glad to find out that it is not. We came on a Sunday of Labor Day weekend and there were no shows of any sort but that was okay. We also did the carousel ($3 for child + adult). Next time, planning to feed the goats and sheep (50 cents for a small handful of feed) and maybe even go inside the enclosure to get up close to the goats and sheep (another $3). All in all, a fun and wholesome experience for the whole family! We will definitely be back!
We had such a wonderful time at the Staten Island Zoo! It’s a perfect place for families with young kids clean, safe, and full of interesting animals to see. Our little one absolutely loved the petting area and watching the monkeys and reptiles. The zoo isn’t too big, which makes it easy to walk around without getting tired, and everything is well maintained. Staff were friendly and helpful, and there are plenty of spots to sit, rest, or grab a snack. A great place for a weekend outing with kids we’ll definitely be back!
A good zoo, clean and tidy. Not many land animals! Walkways signs were missing, the main map was there. Cafe and picnic area was better . Staff was professional. Carousel was fun but compare to the price, less rounds!
Wonderful zoo, one of my favorites. So many animals you can actually see and pet. Never crowded and parking right cross the street.
I lived on staten island for years and today I decided to visit the zoo after hearing it had a capybara. I love these animals so of course I had to visit. We paid $12 per adult and parking is free in the lot across the street. They have a bit of everything for everyone. There is a children’s center, carousel, gift shop and small cafe. I personally enjoyed the fennec fox exhibit, pigs, capybara and all of the monkeys! My boyfriend loved the fishes and snakes. All of the staff here are so kind and well informed about their animals. I would come back here because they’re always bringing new exhibits and new happenings. If you’re military or a kiddo, there is a discount.
Very reasonably priced and a nice getaway for people looking to escape the buzz of Manhattan. Limited number of animals, but the reptiles and Amur leopard were highlights.

First time visiting the Children’s museum in YEARS. We had the absolute best time with our family! From the moment we walked in, the staff was very welcoming. The museum was so well kept. Every exhibit was hands on, educational, and perfectly tailored for kids of all ages. My children were completely engaged from start to finish. I love they provide an area for you to park your stroller, set your kids book bag or personal belongings to the side so you can truly enjoy the entire experience.
Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is truly a hidden gem on Staten Island. The grounds are expansive, peaceful, and filled with so many beautiful corners to explore from lush gardens to fascinating cultural spaces. We spent the day wandering through most of the attractions, and each spot had its own charm. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the Chinese Scholar’s Garden this time, but that just gives us the perfect reason to come back because it’s at the top of our list for the next visit! To make the day even more magical, there happened to be a gorgeous wedding taking place while we were there, which added such a romantic and joyful atmosphere to the gardens. Between the greenery, the architecture, and the sense of history, Snug Harbor is one of those places where you can slow down, soak it all in, and truly enjoy yourself. Highly recommended, and we can’t wait to return.
Snug Harbor is such a beautiful and relaxing spot - perfect for a weekend visit. The atmosphere is peaceful with plenty of open space, gardens, and historic charm. The brewery here is a must-visit - great local vibe, friendly staff, and an awesome beer selection. Definitely grab a flight so you can try a few different brews - they're all crafted with care and full of flavor. Whether you're here for the scenery, the culture, or the beer, Snug Harbor never disappoints.
Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is a popular and famous tourist attraction in Staten Island. With three museums, two art galleries, fourteen botanical gardens, six NYC landmarks, and a two-acre Urban farm, this place has over two centuries of history for you to learn about. At the Staten Island Museum, Noble Maritime Collection, and Children's Museum, you can learn about the deep history of Staten Island. Not only that, but also regarding natural sciences and art. Further historical art experiences and history can be learned at the two art galleries. While the museums and art galleries are fun, the main star of Snug Harbor are the botanical gardens. Specifically, the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden! This is one of two authentic classical outdoor Chinese gardens built in the United States. What makes it authentic is the fact that it is a compilation of different gardens in China that is based on the Ming Dynasty gardens (1368-1644 AD). It is worth the trip here, but I highly suggest coming early! There are limited parking and it is a first-come-first-serve basis. Feel free to bring some snacks/food along, but you can also buy lunch here too! My last piece of advice: check the official websites for hours of operations. Some of the buildings/gardens are only open during certain times of the year or at certain times of the day. You can come during the Winter, but I highly recommend coming in the Summer. Just make sure you stay cool and don't overheat!
Pretty cool. Spent most of my time here at the Chinese garden. Had to pay extra to get in but worth it. Not every ring was open and running but still a nice place to visit and check out. Got a lot of steps in. Food looked good but I don’t try it. Wasn’t hungry.
The park is certainly a lesser known gem in NYC. Once you get off the ferry, you can take several buses to get there (but definitely should check the schedules) or a quick uber lift to the entrance. There are plenty of grounds to walk through though my destination was the Chinese Gardens located at Cottage E. Once inside, you pay a $5 entrance fee and have full access to the Chinese gardens. While not the best kept nor the largest, at that price to be transported to a reminiscent Suzhou house and grounds, it was worth it and still a good setting for pictures. There is also a nice display that gives you information as you walk through. Would recommend a stop in, especially on a beautiful day!
Snug Harbor is a wonderful place to visit. If it were in Manhattan, it would be absolutely filled with visitors. The National Register of Historic Places said that it was the most important collection of Greek revival buildings in the country. It’s beautiful, and you can have some restorative alone time there. My top three picks would be the Staten Island Museum, the Noble Maritime Collection and the Chinese Scholars Garden. If you haven’t been, do yourself a favor and walk around and enjoy the culture and nature.
Beautiful place. Didn’t know such a place existed in NYC. Like being in the countryside. There on Labor Day and even then not too busy. Perfect for a stroll and nap under a big tree.

Beautiful minor league baseball stadium situated on Staten Island's north shore just steps from the S.I. Ferry terminal and featuring commanding views of lower New York Harbor.
First game at the park since they left the Yankees affiliation. It went from bad to worse. The park is beautiful but the parking situation is awful. We were at a game with less than 500 people in attendance but it took 30 minutes to get out of the parking garage. Also, skip the food/drink vouchers. The concession staff sent me on multiple laps of the concourse to redeem. We left with unused vouchers. Nobody seemed to know what to do with them and "Guest Services" was empty the whole game. I'll stick to Somerset and Sussex for my MILB games from now on.
Had a nice time over here. It’s clean. View is really nice and breezy since we were right next to the water. Stadium is on the smaller side but that just makes most seat pretty good. Concession stands has a good amount of choices. Prices for each ticket was pretty cheap also. Got to watch fireworks after the game, too.
May 27, 2023 Pride Day-permitted to walk on the infield during performances. Difficult to slide into home on artificial turf. Nice place to get fresh air & walk around...and watch baseball. May 11, 2022 Scoreboard did not show balls & strikes. $15 for a ticket...Ferry Hawks don't care if not many people attend..they love to play even if noone is watching. Bring a jacket--It gets cooler at night because it's near the water. No comment on concessions. Just go & get fresh air & exercise. Walk up & down the steps.
Loved the Journey to the East Lantern Festival Show! Beautiful Lantern shaped into Asian Mythology creations! Jumping Jaime was awesome with his magic, music show our 8 year old had a blast!!
Went for the journey to the east illuminated walk thru exhibit which runs from October to January. Paid $30 per adult children under 3 are free. The exhibit it's self was pretty cool which took less than an hour to walk through. Found street parking about .5 miles away on a side street by post office. The whole exhibit was about Chinese mythology along with a one man band who also did magic shows. Recommend for all ages. Exhibit was set up on the baseball field of ferryhawls Staten Island university. Wheelchair and stroller friendly. Not overly crowded
Home of the SI Ferryhawks. The stadium has underwent a field renovation switching to turf. Since the failure of the “wheel project.” , parking here can be a real doozy. Best bet is to park in the Outlets lot. Do not attempt to park by 9/11 memorial, sketchy people there cursing at themselves. Baseball is back —Support the ‘hawks !
The seating bowl is fine. The view of the harbor is incredible. The field is a horror - it looks like goats were hired to graze on it. Management does nothing to help attract fans. There is a reason why it is called Echo Gorge at St. George. PS. This ballpark now lies vacant due to the madness of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, who eliminated 42 MiLB teams, including the SI Yankees.

I’ve visited attractions in over a dozen states, and this might be the first time I’ve ever felt compelled to write a review. The $10 admission grants access to several buildings with interactive guided tours. Each building has been perfectly preserved to reflect its appearance from one or two centuries ago. The guides have also created carefully designed interactive activities for each location. The entire tour takes about 90 minutes, and I think it’s absolutely worth it! It feels like I'm a resident back in those days!
The town and museum are beautifully preserved, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the area's historical settlers. We truly enjoyed exploring the museum and admiring the houses, each thoughtfully designed with a charming historical touch. However, one aspect that could be improved was the lack of a receipt or ticket after purchasing admission. The shop attendant merely instructed us to explore the museum freely, which felt somewhat disorganized. Despite this minor drawback, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this place if you’re passing through or staying near Avenel, NJ.
We had a wonderful tour of the property and learned a lot about the settlers of the area. You get to see inside the homes, learn about not only how the people lived but how they built their homes. The houses were moved to the area to create the village, back when they were built people would have lived on farms miles away from each other. The historical society did a great job of moving and restoring the homes, preserving them in time for us to learn about history. There is an onsite cafe with pretty great food. There are public restrooms in a few of the buildings, a gift shop and museum.
This is a great place to visit , but you need to walk , research and be open minded. Every building has its history and tradition. Old buildings, many cool old things to see and discover. People had much less than we have right now and they manage everything well. I highly recommend this place!
One of those treasures that makes history come alive... complete with very kind and knowledgeable staff that dress the part. There were about 5 or 6 of the houses open but we may go back again in the fall to see other houses that were closed today. They have a real blacksmith on-site and a real carpenter that made the broom making machine by looking at a picture of one from the 1820s! I loved the presentation on voting in 1800s, it seemed to hold a very balanced view. I also loved the museum exhibits. One was on Black American baseball history and I saw where my people would've been allowed to play! Go NY Cubans! The other exhibit on toys through the ages was really cool too, especially the tamagotchi/pogs/ beanie babies section - shout out to those born in the 80s🤣 Edited the review to include ample free on-site parking which is rare in NYC and the ice cream shop is adorable and my children said the ice cream was delicious.
Nice assembly of historic houses not far from the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. When I visited they also had a fascinating demonstration of Indigenous American life. On a second visit, I was very impressed by the volunteer at the Guyon Tavern who successfully evoked the life of Dutch farmers and the Dutch Reformed Church and the role of the "Voorlezer". The volunteer at the Guyon-Lake-Tysen House also talked about the family's holdings in enslaved persons. I also loved the demonstration at the Basket Maker's House.
Been here many times, great historical town with large parking lot & free to enter (unless something big is going on). Main Street Coffee shop is great to visit, bathrooms next to it, as well as several good forest trails nearby. Also see Church of St. Andrew. Btw check their website for events calendar, cool tours & fairs happen throughout the year.
Such a fantastic place! Historic Richmond Town has really great events and the staff is absolutely wonderful. It’s really special, educational, beautiful, and lots of fun!

A moving and beautiful memorial dedicated to the Staten Islanders lost on September 11th, 2001. The memorial lists the names of those lost during September 11th and beautifully frames the Manhattan skyline where the original World Trade Center Towers once stood and now where One World Trade Center stands. Surrounded by a small park, it is a true must-see while exploring Staten Island.
Staten Island was such a pleasant surprise! It’s calm, clean, and feels like a completely different world compared to the chaos of Manhattan. The free Staten Island Ferry offers amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline — seriously one of the best things you can do in NYC without spending a dime. There are also nice parks, beaches, and great spots to grab a bite away from the tourist crowds. People were friendly, and it just felt more relaxed and family-friendly. If you want a break from the noise of the city but still want to feel like you’re in New York — Staten Island is the place.
Such a beautiful monument. I passed by often, but visiting at night was truly incredible. Very meaningful and profound. Would definitely recommend paying respects here. Never forget 🇺🇸🇺🇸🫡🫡
We went here by happenstance. We had taken the ferry as way of seeing the view from the harbor and discovered this beautiful tribute. It’s very beautiful and moving in its simplicity and elegant design. An excellent memorial for those who lost their lives on that tragic day.
Great way to get out and away from the noise of the city and to see Lady Liberty! The AC was so nice in the heat and the small shops offered tasty treats and cold beer. We had fun walking the fishing pier and trying a new Mediterranean cuisine place. Snug harbor was also pretty and educational!
Very nice view of Jersey/Manhattan/Long Island from a far. This place also has wildlife walking around which is kinda cool ! Now this park was built as a memorial for 9/11 and the sculpture which resembles white wings features names of people who died in the attack. The wings are centered to see the emplacement of the Twin Towers.
My dad, relatives and I have walked to this memorial on a nice and sunny day. The main Staten Island 9/11 memorial is called Postcards, a permanent outdoor sculpture dedicated in 2004 to honor the 274 Staten Island residents killed on 9/11 and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The memorial's design features two large "postcards" that frame the view of the former World Trade Center site across the harbor, a symbolic line pointing directly to Ground Zero. Each victim is memorialized with a granite plaque featuring their silhouette, name, and birth date.
Scenic place. With a boardwalk. Well maintained. Nice view of Downtown Manhattan. Just next To EO and the pier.
