This is a really excellent battlefield visitor center! The Park Ranger (I forgot his name, I'm sorry) was very personable & patient, answering all my questions, as well as very knowledgeable! The displays & short film are highly educational, as well as being very well displayed & curated. Don't forget to browse in the gift shop for books, materials, & souvenirs!
Really enjoyed myself with the history and the visitor center was cool
Room my k9 there for an afternoon walk. Very nice place full of history.
Greatly preserved historic site. I loved seeing the cannons. Especially the dictator.
The Park associate was very knowledgeable about park.
The visitor center had a fantastic short movie to watch, along with some very informative exhibits. Start the driving tour from there - lots to see including 'The Crater.'
Staff at the visitors center was very helpful and knowledgeable. This place was so nice to walk around and see all the history. There is so much to see and walk through here it amazing. I love how they’ve preserved what they could and have started to fix some of the things falling apart. Would definitely recommend stopping by and checking them out if you have the time. We only had time to make it through the east half but are going back tomorrow to finish the west half.
One of the most well preserved battlefields I've ever seen, I'm unsure if any of the wooden structures are original or not, but the earth foundations of multiple forts still stand along with countless cannons. The only downside is the the visitors center closes super early.

Wonderful park! Fantastic museum with a number of interactive exhibits, historic homes, and great hiking trails along the historic breakthrough attack that ended the seige of Petersburg. The earthworks and preserved fortification are phenomenal. A real hidden gem for anyone at all interested on history.
The pictures don't do this place justice. We stopped here in the middle of a 9-hour drive. So we only had 1.5 hours to spare. We will need to come again to see it all again. 3 hours would be more realistic. My kids are 9,7, and 5. And they didn't complain once. We just read "Laura Ingalls Wilder." I'm sure this helped the kids connect to the time period.
I always noticed the highway sign for this site and finally had the opportunity to visit. The visit was well worth it. While the museum architecture is a bit dated, the exhibits are extremely well done. An audio tour is available which provides much context to the exhibits. The audio tour also offers the chance to choose a person who actually participated in the war and follow their story. You learn a lot about the life of average soldiers in a most engaging manner. The museum staff was friendly and the interpreter who spoke about the life and gear of a Union soldier was excellent. The grounds are beautiful with convenient walkways to enable access to the impressive fortifications that survive to this day. This is a wonderful site for kids and history enthusiasts.
Amazing site. It’s is a great history of the battle and the museums are great love the walk through a soldiers experience. The earthworks are a great walk and the recreated trenches are awesome for realization of the battle. It is a must stop for history people and non history people. The plantation and houses show the civilian life as well. And are just as important.
Nice to visit if you have already visited Appomattox. This battle took place one week prior to surrender. Will come back again, to walk the trails.
Very well done park with many exhibits inside and out. I really enjoyed the audio tour which is included with your admission. The Park Staff at the Battlefield Center took the time to provide a great summary of the battle of Petersburg. Definitely take time to enjoy this piece of history.
First rate museum experience! My son and his friend especially enjoyed the presentations and the exhibit audio tour. Well worth the trip. A must for any history buffs.
Great place to explore history! We stayed 5 hours and couldn't do it all! Lots if walking... what an excellent way for history and nature buffs to get their exercise;) the museum is so interesting. And for those who would rather listen than read, the players/ headphones are awesome. So to surmise, thr adult and child alike will enjoy this gem!

Stopped in for a tour as we passed through Petersburg. We had the most professional and personable tour guide in Vernon, who spent over an hour sharing the history of the chapel and its Tiffany windows with us. So glad we visited.
The tour guides were excellent. Very knowledgeable. Answers all questions. The church has a lot of history. Love the history.
As cenetaries go, it's a beautiful one!
The tour guide Ken, was very knowledgeable and engaging. Beautiful and historically amazing!
The center is run by volunteers. There was a tour going on in the church so the center wasn't open when we arrived. We walked around the cemetery and toured the church later. The guide was nice and knowledgeable. We drove around the cemetery later. I'd like to go again sometime and walk around the cemetery more.
Absolutely worth a stop! We had Ken as our guide and he was amazing! Very knowledgeable and took so much time explaining each pane of glass to us! Highly recommend!
If you are into history at all, it's a must see. Our docent, Ed Betts, did a great job of giving us the historical backdrop without going too deeply into the weeds. The Tiffany glass windows and the story behind them are absolutely amazing.
Fabulous history!! Take your and see the church and get the history. Fascinating!!!

History museum in an 1823 brick Greek Revival mansion featured in the movie Lincoln.

The mansion is one of Peterburg's many treasures. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Brian, who was so thoughtful and engaging.
We loved visiting the mansion, so rich with history. The tour guide, Tyler, was great! He made the tour a wonderful experience with his knowledge and dedication. Thank you for keeping this piece of history so well maintained and available.
Very interesting history to the house, and gorgeous architecture! The guides were very helpful, and answered all our questions. We'll definitely be back!
I love this architectural gem in Petersburg. This was my 3rd or 4th visit in as many decades. Originally built in the Federal style with many Greek revival alterations, it is an explosion of architectural detail. Convenient on-site parking and good descriptions from our guide. Lincoln was here as well as John Tyler and others. Well worth a visit for the history & architecture buffs.
This is a must visit place in Petersburg. Adult entry fee is $10, free for kids under 12. You will get a very detailed guided tour for around an 30-60 mins, worth it. Inside the building it's marvelous, great mansion, artistic.
We had a wonderful tour of this beautiful historic home! Our tour guide, Tyler was fantastic! Definitely a must see in Petersburg.
Building is absolutely wonderful from the outside. Love the architecture. But unfortunately the museum itself was closed. On the left side, where tour entrance is, there is a note that tours only done on 2 weeks prior appointment since 4th of June this year. Wish that info was available on website too, but it was not. Nevertheless, town of Petersburg is nice.
Excellent historic mansion!👌Mr. Brian Silver gave a fine tour of the mansion for 1 hour. Lot of history, lifestyle of noble families, ghost stories will entertain you! President Lincoln visited this mansion! Worth $10 fee! I recommend this for a visit while you're in town 😀

Old Town Historic District is a wonderful place to visit. Many old buildings with tremendous architectural flavor allows one to imagine history during those years. As the economic development continues to churn in many cities in Virginia, it is wonderful this part of Petersburg is being revitalized. The Croaker Spot is a high end restaurant serving scrumptious seafood. This restaurant was well worth the trip.
This tour provided us with a great deal of knowledge about what Virginia and moreover, Petersburg history. Places like this needs to remind open to educate our youths. The tour is self guided and it allowed us to take our time and read. I would recommend this place to people that I know
Neat to see the old buildings but not much open. Good food & nice people but there were many seemingly abandoned businesses. Not happy about vagrants begging for money. Made me uncomfortable. Seems like not much goes on here. It's a shame because the old buildings are beautiful. I bet it was wonderful back in its prime. Longstreet restaurant was delicious. Would love to go back for another lunch!
This entire historic district appears to be a project that was begun with the best of intentions bit then abandoned. The self tour maps are faded and unreadable, most of the businesses were empty and clearly had not been open for some time and this was true on a beautiful mid-June, Friday afternoon. We has driven here hoping to find layers of history and found cobblestone streets that were the high point of the district.
If you're trying to find out about things to do and what to see in and around Petersburg, definitely start here. The staff are very knowledgeable about the area. They can give good recommendations on where to eat and stay too.
It was really cool, but a disappointment because it's not getting the funding it needs to operate properly. The building is in disrepair and we were unable to tour it. I learned quite a bit of the importance of Petersburg and the role it played in the Civil War. Hopefully, the next time I'm up that way it will have gotten it's restoration.
The whole building is not open yet. Was told by end of year the exhibit 400 Years in the Making will be opened. Got lots of pamphlets and maps. Parking is a little tight but the surrounding historic downtown is worth the trip
Was here to film a tv show! It’s a great museum filled with nice people.
