Go play outside it's beautiful. I like to go at all times of the season, however I really enjoy going in the winter when it's not to cold. Everything just kind of slows down a bit. The views are epic. Of course dress for the temperature
This is why we come to South Dakota. The views and scenery are breathtaking. It is such an amazing place, and we appreciate the locals putting up with us during the Rally. The whole state really makes us feel welcome. The rally goers should do their part to be respectful, and not leave behind trash in this beautiful place.
We had a great time exploring the waterfalls. Good trail system that allowed us to do that too. Even though there were other people there I never felt like it was overcrowded.
Drove the scenic byway and saw mountain goat. And a beautiful waterfall.
Lovely little lodge nestled in a gorgeous canyon at the end of a beautiful, winding 15 mile scenic drive. Lobby is beautiful with a large stone fireplace and the inevitable deer/elk/bison heads adorning the room. Staff bordered on apathetic and weren't very engaging. Rooms were a little dated, trying to get luggage trolley over the back door sill was nearly impossible and the two doors leading to the parking lot were so heavy it took both of us pushing to get them opened. The views are stunning and we saw lots of wildlife during our stay as well as several doable hikes to see the waterfalls near the lodge. Would recommend.
Beautiful drive w place to stop. Water runs mainly on the left side (if coming from Spearfish). If first time nice to go both directions so the driver can see it all easier. I like looking out through the sun/moon roof. Great for nature lovers. Dog friendly though not everything is grassy (dirt/mud when you get out) - bring a towel or wipes if you want to keep them clean.
Spearfish Canyon is a beautiful drive. Make sure you save enough time for stopping for pictures. It seems to me that the canyon walls on the north end of the trail are a bit more beautiful, though the entire trail is awesome.
This is a great stop in Spearfish canyon. Very nice viewing area for small falls in the creek from an old holding pond. A pit toilet is on site as well.

Great great experience. The volunteers were so kind and went above and beyond to explain things and give impromptu tours. Free. You can visit a house and go on the train they used to move the baby fish (fingerlings) on. You can also buy fish feed for a dollar and feed them. Well maintained grounds. Parking is at the park north past the site and you'll walk over a bridge to the site.
Very interesting! The rail car that hauled fish was beautiful as well as the Booth house. Feeding the fish was a hoot! The underwater viewing area was cool.Great place to stop that's free. It takes about an hour to tour.
I love this place! Its great family entertainment and its free! Its one of the oldest fish hatcheries in the west. Its not very big, but its right next to city park so you can easily spend half a day in the area. There is a little gift shop and inside is an elevator. You can take the elevator down to an underwater viewing area of the fish if you have a stroller, or if not there are two sets of stairs. The underwater viewing area is definitely the best part of this place! There are so many large fish, and if you're little ones like fish they will love this! My son could easily spend all day here! You can buy fish food and feed the fish, which is so fun! They'll jump out of the water and swarm to get their food! Its so much fun for kids to feed and watch. There is an old train car that was used to move fish on the railway, which is very cool. There is also a museum but its closed for work. There is not RV parking available here, but not even half a mile up the road is a RV campground
Loved it. Lots of fish to see. Way more than expected. Opportunity to feed the fish. The volunteers were awesome giving lots of great information. Small gift shop. My kids really enjoyed it.
Far and few in between do you find a free attraction such as this in a tourist filled area. It’s a must stop for couples and families. The trout here are just amazing. They have an underground viewing area of the trout and a bunch of trout runs here as well. Also by the parking they have perfect picnic areas right on the clearest water river.
This was one of the best hidden jewels in the Sturgis, Deadwood, Spearfish area!!! Many excellent historical exhibits. Lots of Brown Trout from fingerlings to Fry to huge mature fish on display! It is an absolutely beautiful place to visit. Gets some fish food for $1 and watch the fish go wild getting their share!
Free parking. RV's fit across the street i. public parking. Beautiful layout of interest for all ages. Museums, lots of fish, great gift shop with fish food to feed them, trails, history, statues, large park next door. Very pet friendly. @bigdogsrvadventure
Great place to bring the kids and family. Original historical buildings and a comprehensive history of fish and wildlife management. You can purchase food and feed the fish yourself 😀

Parking is across the street, super easy. No hiking is involved as the waterfall is right off the road. There is a path on the side if you wish to go lower into the creek, but the falls are easily seen from the well maintained deck by the road.
Bridal Veil Falls is a quick but beautiful roadside stop along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. There’s limited parking available right next to it, and a wooden viewing platform is built just across the road, making it easy to stop, see, and snap photos without much effort. Some adventurous visitors were trying to get closer to the base of the falls by crossing the stream—but be prepared to get your feet soaked if you plan to do that. It’s not a long stop, but definitely worth pulling over for 2 minutes to take in the view.
This was an awesome place to stop. You can either view the falls from the landing or adventure across the river and experience the waterfall up close. I will definitely visit here again
Oh my gosh. We took our grands and had such an awesome and amazing day at these lovely falls. It was pretty easy to get to them and just being there was such a thrill for everyone. One of my newest most favorite spots 👍🏼
This is another five star place and if you haven't seen the yet the mountain goat in the wild this is one of the best places to see them. This place isn't overcrowded at all and most of the trails are pretty easy to do.
Great quick stop. There is a small trail leading down to the base of the falls. Good place for kids to stretch their legs and wade in the creek.
We drove up after a visit to the Badlands and Custer State Park. It was very peaceful and not crowded. We saw numerous mountain goats, including two babies, up close along the road and pull offs. Walked along the areas and enjoyed the falls and creek. Definitely worth the scenic drive from Spearfish to Deadwood.
A must see stop when passing through spearfish canyon. Take time to enjoy the view and peace and quiet.

Nice place for a beer. We were able to have our dog outside with us. I just wish there was more shade available, but we were able to snag a shady table after someone left.
Just as good as 8 years ago when I first tried their beer! Incredibly awesome staff and even better beer! A must-see if you're in town and a brewery fan.
Great place for a quick beer or to hang out. Good selection of beers all brewed on site. My favorite is the pile of Dirt. A dark smooth porter. Fun kick back atmosphere with a deck and tables on the lawn. 8 tables , a bar and a fireplace for those cold days. only thing missing here is food.
The beer that I had was good but very disappointed in the fact I could not get a taster flight!! Being I am from out of state would have loved to taste more of your beer!! Yet you will give me all the free tasters I want?? I think if you price it right you do not lose money. Every one else in the area has taster flights. Again I think this is poor customer service and the owner is only worried about making a grand slam rather than base hits. Again the beer and service was good.
Awesome classic Spearfish must, great beer, bands, food trucks, orgaicn market next door. One of must see each summer.
My wife and I stopped here while on a motorcycle trip, just to wet our whistle. What a nice brewery it is! I had the Pile o' Dirt Porter it was dark, rich, roasty, and delicious, exactly what i like in a porter. My wife had a Bugling Bull Amber Lager with nice color and a crisp, clean finish. She enjoyed it very much too. Both beers were cold and refreshing. The barkeep was prompt and friendly. Just know there is no table service here, you gotta order your suds at the bartop, which is plenty easy enough. I highly recommend this spot, and I would definetly stop here again! Great beer and a beautiful location!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Some very good beers, a friendly and nice bartender, a few snacks to go with the beer and loads of seating, both indoors and outdoors, plenty of parking and local sightseeing magazines. Don't miss the crow's skeleton! What's not to me like?!
Good beers great dog friendly patio

This is a tour de force raising the bar for heritage museums everywhere! Karla is an amazing host as we also enjoyed dinner & live Western music at this amazing venue. Great job High Plains hosts!!!
Very little people there. Interesting and fun to look at all the things about American western history about cowboys and the natives/indigenous people.
Nice tribute to local ranchers. The Stagecoach is in great shape. The shepherds wagon is interesting. The one room schoolhouse is a wonderful way to explain rural education for farm & ranch children. The gift shop has great books and jewelry.
We finally scheduled our trip out West. The national parks and sites are stunning. One of our stops was at the High Plains Western Heritage Center in Spearfish, South Dakota. Our Colette tour guide set up a time for us to eat and go through the museum. There is plenty of parking with multiple handicap spaces. They also have ramps and elevators for use. The museum is set up to educate travelers on the cowboy era of the Old West. Upon entering, I immediately realized there were many exhibits to see in the museum. They divided it into different display areas based on topics from fashion, Native American, transport, etc. The first area I visited was the transportation display. There is a stagecoach, different types of buggies, and the covered wagons you see in movies. Looking inside the covered wagon, I think of how hard life was for the first settlers out West. They also have a hearse display with a coffin, cowboy hat, and boots. I can almost see the townspeople in their carriages, all dressed in fine Western attire. There are multiple weapons displays, saddle displays, and displays of tools used at the time. The museum taught me things I did not know but was also very interesting. Every staff member was welcoming and friendly. The staff was eager to share their knowledge and provide context for each subject or display. Visiting the museum was thought provoking, educational, and enjoyable. I am glad it was part of our tour. It is a great family attraction. I need to get back in the saddle and mosey on over to my next destination.
So glad this place exists to help preserve our heritage. Pleasant, polite staff, great exhibits, pretty gifts. What a collection!
This is an excellent collection of the western lifestyle during the 1800's and early 1900's. It was well worth the time. It would have been nice to have a guide as there is lots to see, and reading some of the exhibits was not easy.
So much history packed into a rather small space. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Went above and beyond to help us out-of-towner's find interesting places to visit.
Historical, interesting, and wonderful local volunteers !
