Tower with open-air & enclosed observation areas for viewing the sprawling rail yard below.

This place is fascinating, I loved it. Short video on the history and some more museum-like displays up on the top floor; excellent 360° views. One floor down is the open air viewing area and it's amazing, I think I could watch the trains move about all day. SO MANY TRAINS. Cute gift shop, lots of parking.
If you like/love trains it is extremely interesting. Even if you aren't into trains it is still an amazing sight. There is lots of information. Everyone working here was extremely kind and helpful. The had a scavenger hunt of facts for the kids so that helped keep my daughter busy. Very nice and enjoyable.
Really cool place! Plenty of parking, clean restrooms and facilities. Multiple video displays to learn about the rail yard, history, etc. And then of course, the tower and the view. The top of the tower is climate controlled and features displays and a volunteer answering questions along with sweeping views of the yard and the surrounding area. The next level down is the open air deck, which offers a great view of the yard along with all the sounds that go with it. Both levels have telescopes, but I recommend bringing your own binoculars to enhance the viewing experience. Dogs on leashes are welcome in all spaces, inside and outside, and they even offer treats. They also have designated pet play areas with clean up bags, and it seems every pet parent has been responsible for cleaning up, because those areas were free of unpleasant surprises. Great gift shop too, though they did not have my size in the shirt I wanted. The staff member on site directed me to their online store. Snacks and drinks also available, along with free coffee.
Great visit, and a great location for any train enthusiasts. Perfect view of a large yard, and maintenance shop with full view of everything. The "hump" launching cars to be sorted automatically is a major feat of engineering that would impress anyone-a whole train load of cars goes over the "hump" and everything gets sorted in proper order down multiple tracks as easily as dealing out a deck of cards. There is a museum with of history all around the location. You can watch multiple videos of the evolution of passenger trains to transport innovations. Many Presidential candidates used this same location for waypoints during campaign trails, and they even have examples of the meals you would have been served during that time period. Worth a visit if only to see the history.
It's hard to understand the scope of this place. It's eight miles long. There are train cars as far as I can see. It's like a ballet that powers our economy. The video was helpful and a cool look into the history of the operation in North Platte. Highly recommend a visit. Discounted tickets for veterans!
We had a great time at the Golden Spike tower. The kids really liked seeing the trains connect and sort the cars. They have a little museum and gift shop. Go up the elevator and see the observation deck with more information and is in closed. There is a volunteer to answer questions that is a previous train employee. Then go to the open air deck and hear the trains. Awesome quick stop.
Before you take the elevator to the 8th floor of the tower, watch the informative movie. A retired rail worker is on the enclosed 8th floor museum that overlooks Bailey yard. The 7th floor has open air viewing for the best pictures.
The world's largest train marshaling yard. You could spend hours here just watching the trains while drinking a coffee. Everywhere you look there is something going on. It starts at the bottom of the tower with an informative video presentation, and then an elevator ride to the indoor viewing area which also has a number of artefacts on show. There was a member of staff available at the viewing area to explain what was happening outside, but it was fun just watching. There is also an outdoor viewing balcony if you want to hear and smell what is going on too!

Buffalo Bill Cody's ranch with self-guided tours of his restored mansion & barn, plus memorabilia.
Slide 1 of 8
A beautiful home with mostly original furniture, many pictures and memorabilia from Buffalo Bills Wild West Show. The 148 ft. Barn houses posters, saddles, carriages, wagons, Annie Oakley info and pics, posters and a diorama of Buffalo Bills family.
I loved it!! I could have spent 8 hours looking and examining all the pictures and artifacts here!! Unfortunately, there wasn't enough staff on Saturday to get a tour, therefore the 4 stars. I have also been to Cody, Wyoming, and spent 2 days at the Buffalo Bill museum. The ranch is all about his home life, whereas the museum in Cody is about his shows. There are places for picnics, and car and RV parking. This has historical importance of our great Western culture.
This was so pretty and easy to navigate. The little book you are given at the desk is the best self-guided tour. It would’ve been a 5-star experience if it weren’t for two things: First - the two workers inside the house were speaking so loudly to each other they were basically yelling. It was difficult to carry on a conversation with the person I was with until we entered the guest quarters because the workers were being so loud. Second - the sprinkler system made it impossible to walk on the outside path. We had to walk in the grass from the bison to the cabin and then backtrack all the way around the barn to make it to our car because of the massive sprinklers going off.
It’s Beautiful, even though it was closed the day we passed through, it has information at each building and the outside has immaculate.
Lost a star for $14 parking for a two hour visit. I understand the parking fee for camping overnight, but charging the full $14 on top of the entrance fee is steep. If you aren’t mobility challenged, park about a block away and walk. You’ll enjoy the walk (beautiful area) and save quite a bit.
Super cool place. Interesting to see where he went after leaving Le Claire Iowa.
Sorry to say closed on Mondays still was able to walk around and see a bit of the house
What a great treasure! The interpretive displays are so well done! The house is just like walking back in time. The barn really puts in perspective how much he cared for his horses. The treasures are photos of all his performers and performances plus his commitment to our country.

Outstanding family friendly community park with campground, small amusement park, playgrounds, ball fields, train museum, zoo, disc golf, pool and lots of picnic areas. Clean and well maintained, day use is fee free and $15 for campsites, (campground is closed for season). I had 3 bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming, no wifi and 8 OTA television channels.
We were in town for 2 nights and needed to take my daughter someplace to run around. I saw Cody Park on the map but had no idea what it included. We were shocked and highly impressed. First we saw a pool then rides and as we continued the loop an Elk swimming and deer! I didn't even know there were animals here. What a great surprise! We ended up spending 3 hours here. My daughter rode 4 rides for $2.00. We all had ice cream for $7. The playground in the back was amazing and we loved the trains! Pat the man that worked at the train museum was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We really enjoyed talking with him. Also the 2 young male attendants that ran the rides had the kids hysterical. They were joking with them and shooting the kids with water guns. They loved it. I highly recommend visiting this park. Especially the kids playground in the back.
Great place to stay and camp a few days. There are no hook ups or showers, but this is not to be missed if you're in the area. The park is clean, well kept and so much to do. There are four playgrounds, a zoo, a pool, ball field and small amusement park area for kids with rides. There is also a train park where you are able to climb up into train, sit in the engine and walk through cars. They are also in the process of adding pickleball courts.
This place is very cool and if you love trains, be sure to check out the Challenger X3977. She's a beauty and they even let you go up in the cab to show you just how huge she is. Its amazing!
I’ve driven through North Platte over a dozen times and had never noticed this park. Way worth the stop. I had a wonderful walk, making a great break, and even saw the captured deer and elk in the pond.
Great playground for kids, loved looking at the animals, beautiful walks near the water. Lots to see!
We planned Cody Park as a stretch your legs stop on a long road trip with kids. We stopped found a shaded picnic table across from the lake by a playground, got to the table and was immediately attacked by mosquitoes. Moved from the grass and shade to the playground in the sun and still fought them off. Moved to the kiddie park and still fighting them. City needs to spray and get them under control so the beautiful park can be enjoyed. On a huge plus the concession stand had 4 options for dairy free soft serve ice cream and it was amazing I give a 5 for the ice cream and a 2 for the park so I will give the overall experience a 3.5
Large park with a variety of recreational opportunities. I came to see the trains, and was very happy with the fact that visitors can get right next to the locomotives and rolling stock; I learned something about the Centennial engine that I'd long wondered, but never been able to observe at close range. The Challenger and Centennial are two of the most famous locomotives in American railroad history, and it is special to have them both publicly displayed in North Platte.

This place has had much thought and hard work put into it to display many different aspects of life in North Platte. I highly encourage visitors and spend plenty of time. The museum has many interesting local and personal artifacts. I did not spend enough time here. There is a working phone booth with phones that have the hand held receiver and fixed mouth piece. The outdoor museum has many building with furnishings that demonstrate life in North Platte. Our central goal was to visit the Sears catalog house (Fredricksen House). There is plenty of space to walk around and for children to spread out. Parking is easy next to the museum building and cost is very practical for the type of exhibits.
Such a great collection of so much local history! The outdoor buildings added a much larger dimension to the story of Lincoln County. Plus being able to go into many of them was an added bonus. Really enjoyed the canteen remembrance section, such an amazing effort by so many people!
We stopped by right before close one day. I can tell you, and hour isn't enough time to enjoy this amazing museum. The people working there were very kind, the indoor displays in the main building were very well put together, and the outside... that's where the majority of our time was spent. What an amazing collection, our kids loved it and didn't want to leave. We will definitely stop back out the next time were in town, this time, we will be sure to commit several hour so we can see everything.
Fantastic place that is frequently overlooked. Not very expensive to get in. There is so much here that 2 hours is a really fast visit. The indoor museum is only 1/2 of what there is to see. The back yard has houses look in, buildings full of tractors, fire engines, a few cars, a train depot, a caboose, and a ditch plow that was pulled by 48 oxen. Also a church, a schoolhouse, and a barn are out back to tour. Kid and parents found plenty to look at.
Was a very good museum. Had a lot of nice things and excellent display of the Japanese during WWII. Also had some buildings including a church, school, train station and my favorite was the mail order house would recommend every one to check it out
We accidentally found this place looking for the Scouts Rest location. Well preserved history of the county. We love going to small museums and seeing the artifacts that built our country. It is run by local women and men with no real huge funds. But the well preserved buildings outside, old tractor collection, military and times past inside. They were not officially open, but were more than gracious to let us walk around. If you stop to see Buffalo Bill’s house, take a little longer and go see this place.
I only have one complaint. Like a lot of small museums, these kind and caring folks have more articles to display than they have space to adequately display them. Other than that, the people are friendly, helpful and seemed to be appreciative that I was there. The buildings on display, I think, represent the early years of Lincoln County in a very good way.
Are you kidding me? This place is beyond amazing. Give yourself a few hours and take your time. I sped through it in 1.5 hours....and would have liked more time, but they were closing. Bring comfy shoes as you will be outside to view the old buildings. (Which by the way are so amazing) a must visit while in the area....I enjoyed it so much.

Just a Gorgeous memorial. The sculptures are wonderful. Very well done and worth a visit!
What a wonderful and respectful memorial for our brave men and women who signed a blank check.
Beautiful and very well maintained memorial, easy to get in and out of.
Great I80 dog stop and walk spot. Has a 1/2 paved trail around the pond. Literally right off the highway and fenced off from the road
Very clean and lots of parking fairly close to the monument. Scenery at the park is beautiful with the lake. Plenty of lodging in places to get fuel and food close by. This is a very beautiful Memorial and I highly recommend anyone passing through at least take a moment to visit. Very large and beautiful American flag.
I like to stop here when I am driving across Nebraska. It's a great tribute
I only have one suggestion, that they put a gravel or concrete walk way from the road to the picnic area by the play ground. Other than that the park perfect! There are many spots for family pictures. There are docks for those that enjoy sitting back and fishing, a perfect place for a trucker to relax for an afternoon.
Every few years I drive cross country from CA to my hometown in New York. As a proud veteran, I always find peace along the "Purple Heart Msmorial Highway" after a rough day, I happened to book a hotel, and as I pulled in, at midnight I see the memorial. I said "looks like I'll be spending my morning 'talking with Jones and Sharpe',, two friends I lost. In the morning. I instantly grabbed coffee, and expected to stay 5 minutes. Ended up spending over an hour at this beautiful memorial. This is by far one of the largest I've seen. Thank you for this memorial to those that fought to keep us all safe. Thank you to all those who have served, or are currently serving. "I don't know why I left, but I left on my own... and it won't be long, till I, till I, till I get on back home. Back home back home, back home where I belong. And it won't be long, till I make it back home." GOD BLESS 🙌 If you're still reading this far. Another great cadence that hits home. "Momma told Johnnie not to go down town, the army recruiter was hanging around. Well, recruiter asked Johnnie what he wanted to be. He said "I WANNA JOIN THE INFANTRY" . Johnnie got sent to Vietnam, where he met the people called the Viet-kong. Johnnie was strong, oh he was brave. Johnnie jumped on a hand grenade. Saved the lives of the men, he led. Now poor Johnnie, he was de**" Before he die* this is what he said. Tell my momma I've done my best. Pinned his medals upon his chest. I'll never fill that hole he left. Singing oh lord, please don't go... left right, left right, sign this song. Ohhhh lord, please don't go. Left right left right, his memory lives on. "

Q&A about North Platte

I've lived in San Diego for ten years and I tell all my friends who visit that a California burrito or Carne asada fries from a taco shop are a must. Coronado Beach is my favorite beach because there's just something about the feel of the sand (which seems softer than other beaches) there. Balboa Park is fun to walk around and has lots to see. La Jolla Cove to see the seals and sea lions.
