Where to begin on one of the best adventures EVER?
To start, this was our first time in Costa Rica and we had our adventurous 12 and 6 year old daughters along for the ride.
We stayed at the Hotel AltaGracia and had looked for options exploring Corcovado via the hotel. The excursion via the hotel were amazing but they were very, very expensive. As we looked up local outfitters, we came across Sierpe Outfitters and it looked awesome.
We reached out to Rayna and Vanneza via WhatsApp and from there we had every one of our several questions answered and were able to figure out exactly what we wanted to do. The journey to Corcovado is intense – we rented a car and drove for 2 hours to get to Sierpe, then the boat ride was 3 hours (1 hour through the river/Mangroves and 2 through the Pacific Coast) before hopping out near the shore and exploring the national park for 5-6 hours with a delicious lunch in between. And then you literally repeat the way back!
Rayna and Vanneza guided us through the best way to make the trip, the best times, how to prepare, what to bring, and what to expect. Pricing was easy and transparent and there were easy options for breakfast and lunch since you want to maximize your day as best you can. They were constantly in touch via WhatsApp and finding the departure area the day of our arrival was simple with detailed instructions.
Once we arrived, Jose (our guide) and Greivin (our captain) were there waiting for us. They checked to make sure we were all ready, showed us to the bathrooms (inside a restaurant 50 yards away) and we then hopped on the boat. The boat is simply a boat! Enough to fit a family of 4 to spread out and the guides/captain behind. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and if you remotely at risk of motion sickness – Zofran, scopolamine, Dramamine, motion band – make sure to use it as the water can be choppy, especially as you pass through the river delta and into the Pacific. Snacks and things to munch on are key. Jose was outstanding – personable, friendly, and wonderful about pointing out things in the water, horizon, land, and beyond. We stopped whenever we needed to look for fish, birds, etc. and they were great with the girls.
On arrival, you literally stop and de-boat in about 2-3 feet of water. You can leave some belongings in the boat safely, and grab the backpacks and go off on the journey. Jose shined here. For the next several hours, we found EVERYTHING. Every animal, plant, bird, insect, you name it – he found them, taught us, set up the perfect shots with his scope, was patient as we were certainly tired, and was just incredible with engaging the kids. The lunch in Corcovado was amazing – simple rice, chicken, beans, and chips and it hit the spot. There’s a lovely gift shop with souvenirs, coffee, chocolate and local ice cream that is great and Jose accommodated as much time as we needed to rest.
We hiked for several hours and saw an innumerable amount of amazing things. Not just in the forest but on the beach, in the water, and in the clearings. Good hiking shoes (or closed toed Tivas or Keens) are a must as is bug spray and plenty of water. I would recommend long pants/sleeves to shield from the bugs/sun but ones you can easily roll up/zip off/etc. Definitely a hat but not too big – spiders/bugs have a tendency to land if you brush up against a tree or bush inadvertently!
On the way back we were happy and tired. Jose and our captain took us back the way we can, pointed out things along the way but it was a relaxing and chill ride as we were all exhausted. It was an incredible, authentic, and once in a lifetime trip. You can truly tell that Jose and Greivin absolutely love what they do and take pride in teaching and showing others the treasures of Corcovado. We arrived back exhausted, happy, hungry, and I have to say the shower we had and the end of our 18 hour day was one of the best ever.
Book directly through Sierpe Outfitters - best bit of advice! The local flavor and communication/friendliness/expertise cannot be beat. Thanks Jose, Greivin, Rayna and Vanneza!
