Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France is the capital of the Caribbean island of Martinique, a French overseas territory. It’s known for colonial architecture, ornate iron balconies, tropical flowers and beaches. La Savane park has a statue of Napoleon I’s wife Joséphine, a native of the island. Exhibits at the Martinique Museum of Archaeology and Prehistory focus on the island’s history, especially the pre-Columbian period. .

Botanical garden with exotic plants from around the world, a treetop walkway & mountain views.

The Jardin de Balata is a truly stunning botanical garden, beautifully designed and wonderfully located in the lush hills of Martinique. The variety of tropical plants and flowers is impressive, and every path offers a new scenic view to enjoy. For hummingbird enthusiasts, this garden is a true paradise — there are excellent opportunities to observe and photograph these magnificent birds up close. A visit to this tranquil and well-maintained garden is highly recommended for nature lovers and photographers alike.
It is an amazing garden. Entering the garden, it seems like you are in paradise. The flowers delight your eyes with their colors. The fish charm you with their undulating movement. For thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, there are suspension bridges where you can see far into the distance, the Caribbean Sea framed by towering palm trees. Huge bamboo trees line the paths in the garden. You will hear a lot of bird calls (if the chatty tourists keep quiet, which is unlikely). When leaving the garden, you could see the hummingbird. They drink the syrup specially prepared by the caretakers. It is recommended to visit it. The price is 16 euros but you can leave 1-2 euros extra for the garden.
We loved wandering the gardens. A nice break from the cruise ship and beaches. It was cool under the tree canopy and the variety of plants was wonderful.
No one tells you that you can buy combined tickets Jardin+Zoo for a better rate. Otherwise, it is a wonderful garden worthy visit, beautiful flowers and amazing landscape
Very nice garden. Short to visit however. Count 1h if you take your time. 13 Euros per person. Value for the price is debatable, but depends on each individual taste I suppose. Cool activity to fill a gap of 2-3h (when counting the time to get there if you are in the southern part of the island and coming back). It's roughly a 20-30 min drive from downtown Fort de France, and +-1h from Trois Ilets. Would not judge this as a must do in Martinique. It's a nice, time killer if you need one.
The garden is beautiful. It took us about 45 minutes. Tip: ask for the ticket to do both the garden and the zoo. You're provided with a map, that is farely easy to follow. (I left that job for my partner, lol) Be sure to get a small bottle of water before you begin. The views were amazing and the tram was fun crossing over!
We visited in the off-season, but were welcomed by many beautiful flowers regardless. Definitely worth a visit and the ticket price is well worth it.
Great place. Beautiful garden. Nice walk on a paved path.

It is gorgeous inside and outside! Unfortunately I didn't have time to look around much because they were closing it up for lunch, it was about 1pm. At least it was one of the few places open on Sunday!
The Bibliothèque Schœlcher is a stunning landmark with its colorful façade and unique design, shipped piece by piece from Paris in the 19th century. Inside, the architecture is just as impressive. Located in the city center, it’s worth a quick visit while exploring Fort-de-France.
Beautiful historic library, a must see given its liberation story. They showcase beautiful art exhibitions on the centre space too.
Great place. Historical one. Must visit.
It's free to get in and should be as there is not much to see. Old historic library that is of some significance. Needs some funding to give this place a facelift. Worth a few minutes to pop in.
Free. parking on street. Beautiful library with spiral staircases going to the 2nd floor.
Architectural gem! Was built in 1887 for Parisian exhibition, later dismantled and moved to Martinique. A beautiful pavillon which is a public library today. Don’t be shy to have a look inside !
Fabulous architecture, and a stunning facade. A must see location in Fort de France. 😎 👍

I was here for a day on a cruise ship, it was a Sunday and there was a horse event going on, so unfortunately most of the park was closed off and I could only see horses instead of statues lol.
A great park. There’s also a small beach nearby where you can go for a swim.
Fun spot to let the kids run around in the grass once off the ship. Close to the port and close to shopping. Super quiet and not a lot of people, pretty clean.
Park located by a beach and fort.
Massive open space with iguanas roaming around and lots of food stalls nearby serving delicious food from different areas of the world and drinks!
Frightening place. Even in day time. Drug addicts will bully you and try to rob you. Apparently, police does not care.
Currently 30 degrees! My home for the past 15 days! And there is more to come!

A beautifully constructed church here in Martinique. The inside boasts stained glass and vaulted ceilings and all the wonders of a fancy European built church, there on the small island, most likely the most elaborate building in the island. Religion seekers can visit the structure when its open, and go inside to pray or take photos. Donations are welcomed at the front, along with a table for baked goods sales.
Artistically stunning neoclassical church, with lively, heartwarming Sunday services. The priest gives great homilies (in French).
Absolutely beautiful cathedral, 5 minutes walk from the downtown Fort-de-France cruise port.
Beautiful Cathedral in the Island Style. Fantastic Stained Glass Windows. Visited during Lent so all the statues were covered up. I highly recommend a visit.
A beautifully constructed Cathedral. Stunning from every angle, truly a masterpiece.
Breathtaking natural beauty; hotels, villas, and Creole residences to suit every style of travel; pulsating authenticity, traditions and culture; magnificent protected hiking trails, intriguing mangrove tours, and canyoning adventures; world-famous surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, bill fishing, and every other conceivable water sport or just relaxing on the beach… Martinique is truly one place that has it all!
St. Louis Cathedral is one of the main landmarks in Fort-de-France, with its striking Neo-Gothic design and tall spire. The interior is simple yet elegant, with stained glass windows adding color and light. Located right in the city center, it’s easy to visit while exploring on foot.
A rly nice cathedrale designed by the architect wo designed the Eifeltower. Its worth a Short visit and Maybe you can See the backstage areas too.

This is the cheapest way to get around to other islands, the process was pretty decent. If using ensure to have travel/medical insurance and proof of address to the country you’re visiting (if you’re going for more than one day).
We arrived 90 minutes prior departure which was an hour prior to getting on the boat for departure. I wouldn’t have wanted to leave less time, as it took 40 minutes to exchange the digital ticket for a paper ticket. You can drop your baggage off if you want (we decided to do that so we could walk around the deck). You then go through security before waiting in the sitting area prior to departure. We were there for 5-10 minutes before getting on board. There is no messing around and our boat departed 5 minutes early. Very smooth crossing even though there was a breeze. Immigration the other end took about an hour.
I’ve traveled to 65 countries and taken countless ferries, but this is by far the worst ferry company I have ever encountered. They canceled two full weeks of sailings just two hours before departure, with nothing more than a short email. No compensation, no assistance — only an instruction to request a refund by email. Travelers who needed to reach neighboring islands to fly home were left completely stranded. Many customers were forced to sort out food and accommodation for two weeks on their own, with no alternatives offered or even suggested. Utterly irresponsible company. Do NOT use them. Fly instead — seriously!
The customer service in Martinique is horrible. Knowing that English dominant countries such as Saint Lucia and Dominica frequent Martinique I only encountered 1 person who spoke English near the ticket purchasjg area( a security who could not provide any information). I do understand and speak some French so I could get through but more effort needs to put in place to remedy this. Another issue people were queued on a line for over 20 mins and an employee walked past without uttering a word as to when the ticket booth would be open. It was only after a 2nd pass by did a customer stop her to ask questions Lastly, the boat was delayed and not one announcement was provided by staff to assure passengers, some of whom had the trip cancelled the night before. Overall cleanliness of the boat, arrival times are great
The ferry was clean and not too crowded. Concessions were available. The seas were active, so the staff made sure anyone who needed one, had a bag to puke in.
Moves you between caribean islands. Checkin starts 60min earlier but ok come come later if you are in a hurry. Tickets can be prepurched (makes things faster) or at the terminal. Boats in quite bad shape: broken / teared seats. To other directional toilets not working. Small kiosk that sells drinks and sandwiches If a lot of people will leave late, we left on Sunday from Domica to Martinique around 25min late.
Ahhh, the 'joy' of waiting in queues for 2hrs (in Martinique). We arrived at noon, started the wait, boat was supposed to leave at 1:10pm and actually left at 2:30pm (virtually all that time spent crammed in the checkin queue). Then yet another hour long queue after arrival to St.Lucia in immigration. The ride is a bit bumpy, so sea-sickness medicine is a must for weaker stomachs 🤢
The ferry itself is okay (as long as you get to sit inside, the upper deck is another story, literally). Motion sickness? The upper deck it is. The bigger problem is with how the relevant authorities deal with passengers during the check-in, security checks and border control processes... even documented disabled passengers have to stand there for way too long under less than comfortable conditions. When it takes nearly two hours to move from the boat to the border officers and there isn't a single spot where you can sit or lean on something, it can be quite a pain for the young and healthy as much as for the aged and injured...
