Tepoztlan

Tepoztlán is a Mexican town south of Mexico City. It’s known as the reputed birthplace of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec feathered serpent god, and for its weekly craft market. A steep trail leads to the Aztec Tepozteco pyramid, on a clifftop above the town. A 16th-century former Dominican monastery, the Tepoztlán Ex-Convento, has a local history museum. The adjacent Carlos Pellicer Cámara Museum displays pre-Hispanic art.

Tip: the iron fence and last part of this amazing hike closes every day at 16:00. The entrance, if you want to see the pyramid and the part with the most beautiful view costs 100 pesos and is free for children and elderly (60+). On Sunday it's free for all Mexicans. There is a huge difference in amount of people between weekends and weekdays, both experiences are worth it. If you like a lot of people, with music, high heels, alcohol and atmosphere, weekends are really cool! If you like the "nature" and chill vibe more, please consider a week day experience; you are welcome;)!
If you can go as early as possible (opening time is 9), it will be quiet and peaceful. It'll be so early that the markets at the beginning of the route won't be open yet. The hike up is challenging so you do need a basic level of fitness but it is so worth it. The pyramid is small but don't let that put you off. It's a piece of history which is preserved and tells us more about this world and for only 100 pesos entry, it's well looked after. The most beautiful part of this is the view that you are rewarded after your hike. Highlight of my time here.
I had been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to write this review once I had the chance. Perhaps I wasn’t paying close enough attention, but it seemed like nowhere was it mentioned that the path to this archaeological site takes approximately two hours if you’re not particularly fit. It’s genuine rough terrain—true hiking. According to my data, to reach the summit where the pyramid is located, you need to ascend about 400 meters vertically, which is roughly equivalent to climbing a 130-story building on foot. So, please keep this in mind, and most importantly, it seems that, judging by the number of people there—including small children being carried and elderly individuals—very few are actually aware of what lies ahead. Well, now you know. As for the archaeological site itself, to be honest, it’s probably not worth the climb, at least not more than once. There are a lot of people, and the charm of a secluded mountaintop spot dissipates. However, the pyramid stands right on the edge of a cliff, and behind it is a steep drop, reminiscent of the scene in the movie “From Dusk Till Dawn,” where the bar is revealed to be an ancient temple, and vampires would toss bodies and cars down below. This could have served as a prototype for that scene in the film. You can climb onto the pyramid, by the way, but the archaeological zone itself isn’t all that impressive. I must say, the ascent was quite a surprise, and don’t forget that you also have to descend, which isn’t exactly easy either. Oh, and at the end, they’ll charge you 100 pesos for visiting the area, of course. Overall, it’s pretty cool; everyone takes photos and is happy they made it. Those still climbing can be encouraged as you descend. So, it’s alright.
Really nice place! 90% of the hike has stairs, so as long as you have average condition, you should be able to safely hike this hill. I get why, but asking you to pay $100 mxn to see something you are already seeing (the pyramid-like construction) felt like it was not worth it (not complaining about the price, it is fair)
A beautiful place to visit the egg is very pleasant and the view from the top is stunning. I would recommend anyone to go there, the hike is a bit tough but it’s worth it. Take good shoes and water
Beautiful hiking! The path to the pyramid is very demanding but the view from there is amazing. The site is not well maintained, there is no bathroom and a lot of trash. To access the site you need to pay MXN 100 and it only accept cash.
The hike is strenuous, prepare in advance. Takes 3-4 hours to complete the whole trek. You will gain almost 2000 feet (600 meters) while going up. The trek is 1.4 miles (2 kms) one way. Keep 100 pesos per person, they take the entrance ticket just before the pyramid. Overall its a very nice hike with beautiful view at the top.
Entry to the pyramid (and the beautiful view) closes at 3pm/15:00, but there are no signs to indicate that until you’ve gone all the way up. Bummer! It’s a beautiful hike otherwise, and you’ll get a good workout.

Free museum with great history about the building and use of the building. Downstairs is wheelchair accessible but not upstairs. Had a very interesting modern art room which was very interesting. Would definitely recommend.
A small but worthwhile the visit museum. They have a beautiful display of art and interesting architecture at the center.
If you enjoy architecture this is a must quick stop if you come to Tepoztlán. Only the first floor tour is open due to pandemic, but it's fine anyway.
The Museo de Arte Prehispánico Carlos Pellicer in Tepoztlán is a delightful surprise, showcasing a rich collection of archaeological artifacts. This museum houses over 1,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic art from various cultures, including Maya, Totonaca, Mexica, Teotihuacana, Zapoteca, and Olmeca. The collection was donated by the renowned Tabascan poet Carlos Pellicer Cámara. Despite its modest size, the museum offers a diverse array of ceramics, stone carvings, and even a stone ring used in the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame. Notably, there are lively and vibrant human and animal figures, though the exhibits lack informative descriptions. The museum is located behind the Dominican church in Tepoztlán. Admission is 15 pesos, payable in cash only. Given the limited number of attractions in the area, this museum is well worth a visit for those interested in pre-Hispanic cultures.
This was an unexpected highlight of our trip through Tepotzlan. I love history and the artifacts were fascinating to look at. An older gentleman struck up a conversation with me and he presented a lot of knowledge that was helpful for me to understand a lot of the items...free education 🤙🏼
Small museum, but it has a lot of stuff.
Highly recommended. I've attached a photo of a figure from Nayarit. The collection encompasses various time frames and geography. It's wonderful.

Great place to go and explore. Bought produce, ate at one of the local taco stands inside the market. Food is delicious and definitely recommended. Just sit down at a bench and order a few things. We ate everything including fresh salsas.
A very beautiful place to visit and spend time with your family and enjoy its rich snow, its hills, its people, its food, its warm climate and the hospitality of its people, highly recommended to visit.
A great place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables and very tasty and authentic Mexican food. There is a section where artisans sells their beautiful art.
Love the Mercado, a lovely walk around with the beautiful scenery of the mountains behind. Great environment and very friendly local people, smells amazing with all those food stalls.
Unfortunately I didn't have a great experience here. My girlfriend and I ate in one of these food stalls, and the food wasn't great. I liked the pancita, but I wish it was spicier. All the rest was gone off. We ordered a Chile relleno, and it was acid and unedible. The tortilla was also very hard and dry. Overall, it's not a great experience. We don't know if we were unlucky and the other stalls were better. The one we ate was called doña something, unfortunately I can't recall the full name. (In front of this one, there was another called doña something).
The Mercado of Tepoztlan is amazing. Lots of great produce and food stands. The Pre-Hispanic food is something you should try. It’s something we haven’t found in other place of Mexico we’ve visited during the 4 months we have spent in this country. Food will cost between 1-5 USD and is TOTALLY worth your money. This food It basically a selection of “vegetarian” balls that came all prepared with weeds, flowers, seeds, fruits (& even crickets) from the region and were served with some delicious mole!
Incredible experience! Highly recommend for groceries and/or lunch/early dinner. Everything closes early so get there before 4!
I love this place. Food is amazing and Artisan products are great. this is the best way to shop local and support the community.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 A peaceful, affirming oasis for the LGBTQ+ community Tepozspa is more than just a spa — it’s a sanctuary. As a gay traveler, I felt immediately welcomed and embraced in a warm, inclusive atmosphere that celebrates diversity without making it a big deal. The space is beautifully designed, blending natural elements with a calm, spiritual energy that makes it easy to fully relax and be yourself. The staff were not only professional and highly skilled, but also genuinely friendly and respectful. It's truly a place where all body types and nationalities can feel embraced and welcomed. It's excellent for a birthday get away, a day for yourself or just to go and have fun. The drinks are great and prices extremely affordable. My husband and I are here almost EVERY weekend. Make sure to bring lawn chairs for the bon-fire in the evening. If you haven't been to Tepozspa, you haven't been to Mexico.
Incredibly bad service. Very rude at the door. Tried to call ahead of time to get info but they just told us to check Facebook. Drove 45 mins from Cuernavaca to enjoy a massage service but when I arrived, there was no masseur. They were unwilling to try and create a positive experience. Wouldn't give them a penny.
Not worth the gas nor the 300 entry fee. My little bottle of water confiscated at door (trying to force me to buy their 20 pesos bottles). On Sunday afternoon only a dozen or so people. My third trip was my last. Will never recommend the palce.
We had a really nice, relaxing few hours. Clean comfortable place with attentive bar staff and reasonable prices. Will definitely return.
Terrible service. Called an hour ahead of time to reserve the masseur and after driving 45min from Cuernavaca there were no masseurs.
Trouble in paradise guys?
(Translated by Google) I went on an organized trip from CDMX with the dulcecitas and everything was good. The best option is to rent a dressing room to have more privacy. The only thing I didn't like very much was the food and that the sauna was only on for a while in the afternoon.
(Translated by Google) It's the second time I've gone and we have to take into account the good and the bad so they can improve On the good side, it is a pleasant place, its green spaces are incredible, flowers and well-kept vegetation everywhere. They can improve in many things, the organization is very bad so you have to be patient and have a tolerance for frustration. Even if you make a reservation at the campsite, they give it at the time you want because they organize it at the mere hour, there is no point in booking ahead of time, and if you ask they give you long and long without a solution and you end up sleeping wherever you can. They don't allow you to bring food (cookies, sweets, candies, snacks), but they don't sell them inside either. They sell sandwiches, hot dogs, and synchronized foods, but the kitchen closes early. You have to be very careful when keeping your account because they overcharge you for things (they don't give you a breakdown of consumption, they just tell you how much it is). The service of the local people (waiters, security, cleaning) is very good, but that of the foreigners (owners/management) is horrible, they have no customer service, it seems that they do you the favor of allowing you to enter and they do not solve anything. General cleaning can also improve a lot. The music and the drag queen shows are definitely the best, the atmosphere is good. I recommend going in the low season to enjoy it, if you go on an event day you may be disappointed with the service.
