Devonport

Devonport is a city in Tasmania, Australia. It's on the north coast, where the Mersey River meets Bass Strait. On the waterfront, the Bass Strait Maritime Centre has exhibits about early explorers, shipwrecks and steamers. Housed in an old church, the Devonport Regional Gallery is dedicated to Tasmanian art. Now a museum, Home Hill was the residence of former Australian prime minister Joseph Lyons in the early 1900s.

What a wonderful experience. A little daunting with everything going on (first time traveller) but everyone was very helpful and instructions were very clear. Wonderful way to travel with a fully loaded car. Sunrise in Geelong was awesome so highly recommend waking up really early. Thank you SOT staff, was a pleasure to travel with you.
Travelling on the Spirit of Tasmania is most definitely the best way I find to travel to & from Tassie for holidays & photoshoots. I can take my own car, taking as much luggage & gear as I need, and return back home to Geelong with lots of uniquely Tasmanian produce like honey, ciders, raspberry jams, gins & wines. The service from the staff, both onboard and on land is exceptional....friendly, efficient, attentive and helpful. All of my 14 crossings have been comfortable & relaxing with the on deck furniture, photos of Tassie on the walls, or the views from the windows. There is plenty of variety of good food from both the TMK and the bar on Deck 9; and entertainment in the cinemas, performers on Deck 9 or people promoting Tasmanian produce. I choose to travel overnight and book 'inside cabins' with their own toilet & showers, as there is less rock & roll if there are any swells & rough seas etc in the Strait. Also, that way, I am not wasting a day travelling and can get going first thing in the mornings to see, photograph & experience the beauty of Tassie. The embarking and disembarking processes are quick & efficient, especially considering the number of people & vehicles that are travelling most times. It is also a lovely view and experience to see both Geelong(my hometown) and Devonport from a different POV when standing on the decks photographing.
This was our 3rd time to Tasmania on the Spirit., enjoyed it all. We have taken motorhome before, then tent another time. This time travelled in our vehicle to hire a van in TAS. Staff doing the boarding were great in directing traffic on and off. Very clean and comfortable whichever way you choose and we have done all modes. Staff very helpful, food and drinks great. For us the Spirit is our favourite way to get to Tasmania. Hopefully I’ll get to sail on one of the new SOT although this trip possibly is our last( sadly) We love Tassie, the people, history and the amazing scenery everywhere.. highly recommend this journey to everyone❤️❤️❤️
Very organised, friendly staff good facilities, we had the theatre all to ourselves. Cabin was squeezy might get a bigger one next time. A bit of a rolling journey.
I traveled to Tasmania recently for a 10 days holidays with my Amiga Anne, & we went on board the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry with Anne’s car. We booked on line, travelling by day with reckliner seats & booked a cabin on our trip back to Geelong port last Sunday night 12/10/25. Being both pensioners we got a huge discount on our tickets. We both enjoyed both trips there & back, & I will recommend to all my friends & family to have a go & travel to Tasmania with the ferry! Thank you! Zhennie Thomson
Love taking the Spirit of Tasmania to Tassie for trips. Very easy when you want to take your car (or not)! Great staff across the board, and the onboard amenities are great, including the cabins (can only speak on behalf of the twin or bunk rooms, however am sure all variations are great). Comfortable and well priced. We personally wouldn’t choose to travel to Tassie and back any other way.
Our second journey on the Spirit and we loved it! Our amenities were spotlessly clean and comfortable. Meals and services provided were excellent! Praise to the staff and crew for their efforts.
I had a wonderful trip over on the Spirit of Tasmania. From the lady who gave me my boarding pass with a friendly smile and clear directions for where to go next, to the man who made my vegetable pizza and was thrilled when I told him I enjoyed it. The experience was fun, easy and relaxing. Ammenities excellent.

It’s a little bit confusing to find the entrance haha. When entered successfully we bought the tickets from the front desk. There’s some nice souvenirs around there. They served the biscuits and cake over the gate. The train came on time and we chose the carriage that we liked and sit. The train drove slowly for us to enjoy the view on the way and relaxed. I loved the moment that the train turned around to adjust the heading direction. Every staff helped step by step together. So cute haha!! There’s a red guy for you to put the penny into it and then some magic gifts out 🪄 We had a lots of fun here!!
Incredible tour & museum! Informative drivers who showed us around the locomotives. Beautiful scenery! Lots to see! Highly recommend!!
Highly recommended! Very nice volunteer staff they are train lover. Very nice place! Must take a train ride! Valuable memory!
This place was on my husbands wish list when visiting Tasmania. We both love old trains and train journeys. It was surprisingly fun and informative. We met several volunteers that were happy to answer questions. One bloke asked if we would like to see the workshop. Of course we want to see the workshop haha. We had so much fun and didn’t want to leave.
Visited during their 50th anniversary event. Was my third visit in two years and the crew and staff were helpful and friendly. Plenty of free parking, a selection of drinks and snacks on site too.
Lots of railway equipment and a nice ride down the 4km of track.
Would love to come back and visit this place with the hope of more track, I could have happily rode back and forth all day long, it's a real shame there isn't more rail travel in Tasmania as it has such a beautiful landscape that would be amazing to travel in one of these beautiful carriages pulled by such fantastic engines. There was lots to see after or before your train ride, I hope this place keeps going strong for years to come.
We had a fantastic experience at Don River Railway. We viewed the restored trains as well as took the train ride. My son who loves anything transport/machinery related absolutely loved the experience. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. If you weren’t aware, this place suffered a fire about a year ago but have done an excellent job to rebuild. Definitely worth going and visiting and supporting this fantastic Tasmanian organisation.

My favourite antique place! Massive collection. Impressive. Managed to pick up a couple of goodies from here. Definitely worth a visit when in Devonport. There is off street parking. Quite easy to find and get to as it is just along the main road into town. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
You can see a lot of antiques at this store. I went with my friends and left good memories. There are only four Fortune Teller vending machines in the world.
Incredible collection, I could spend a whole day here. I felt like a kid in a candy store and the shop owner is an absolute delight.
i got two vintage 1996 cokes here, should i drink it? i also got an half an hour’s worth of delightful browsing: theres so much stuff there! if you’re a curious person, its worth going to devonport just to browse this place. let your eyes wander the tight halls full of sheer stuff!
This store has Everything, like a toy store for adults: once you get in, it is sooo hard to get out. The staffs are really wonderful and friendly, and even the toilet paper holder is an antique stuff. Also have a fortune teller machine.
Fantastic place to spend a few hours, so many different curios, gifts, nostalgic items. Lovely owners.
Awesome place loads to see it has multiple levels and lots or different rooms The prices are quite high for most of the items but there’s a few bargains to be had Even if you don’t want to buy anything it’s definitely worth a walk around to see all the old and wonderful things
Huge two story warehouse packed with antiques and collectibles. Something for everyone in here, everything from English fine bone China to vintage cameras and collectible souvenir Tasmanian teaspoons. Definitely worth stopping for a browse - you never know what you’ll find. If you like antique shops then this is a huge treasure trove.

We popped into the Maritime Centre on 5 December 2024. The Café looked really good - large, good menu (we did not eat there). The Museum was $10 per person. It was large, so reserve some time for this if you want to see it. Plenty parking on the back road. Yes, recommended. We walked to the Spirit of the Sea Sculpture on the point as well.
Fantastic display with lots of local knowledge. We enjoyed getting to know more history about Bass Straight and boats which have navigated around Tasmania. There is a boat simulator which the kids enjoyed and plenty of other activities for them as well. It's very thoughout. If you're visiting Devonport, I highly recommend putting a few hours aside to check this out.
It's absolutely brilliant. Has great displays and amazing historical information. The models are wicked. Aboriginal room was awesome. So much info regarding how the shell necklace was made years ago. The simulator was a big hit. There is nothing negative about this place. Well, we couldn't fault it. The staff are so friendly, warm and welcoming and full of info. They have ghost/ night tour through the Harbour Master's cottage, which is all a part of the museum. The Cafe just inside is just as remarkable. Food is outstanding and sooo yummy 😋. Staff are so welcoming. Just drop on by It's open 10-3, 7 days a week. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!
This is a great museum for kids and adults. It is a amazing and informative display. The ship simulator was extremely fun and a very cool experience. The staff members were very helpful and even recommended some amazing places in Devonport. Exquisite place to get some information about the Tasmanian sea and history. It has lots of interesting artefacts and wonderful souvenirs.
The museum itself isn’t that big but you still have plenty of room to explore. The staff were really friendly and helpful, gave me interesting information about the whole museum. The ship simulator was really fun, luckily there wasn’t many people around that time so I had plenty of time for myself 😂
The ship models were super detailed and the whole place was peaceful and interesting. Great spot to spend an hour or two.
very interesting exhibits that expanded what i know about our maritime history. the ship simulator was unexpected yet a blast to play (and beat on the hardest difficulty!) worth the visit alongside the antique emporium on any trip to devonport!
Good maritime history of Devonport. The stimulation of sailing in the 1890 was a a bit of fun.

Such a beautiful Zen place. Saw several Platypus in the lake around 9.30am. Wondered around enjoying the autumn scenery. So relaxing. Had a delicious icecream, Maple and Walnut, can highly recommend this one. There were several different flavours including Leatherwood Honey. A treat to look forward to next visit.
I was pleasantly surprised by this attraction - for $10 it’s well worth the visit. Just make sure you download maps offline as there’s limited access on the grounds. The kiosk offered alternative payment options which was handy, and the maps were well stocked so you could choose your own adventure. Amenities were plenty and well kept - with lawn around picnic areas cut short for convenience. Very happy I stopped by and not enough time to explore every inch so I will return.
$10 per person to visit but well worth it. Loads of wildlife including black swans and some lovely little Platypus, some nice little walks around this tranquil area, would definitely recommend to others.
Its beautiful out there. Almost guarantee to see platypus. So many different looks all year round. Autumn is incredible. Lovely hills to roll down. Trees to pay under. Seats to sit and enjoy the view. If you struggle with mobility, there is an alternative. Speak to the wonderful volunteers for help
The best spot to catch up wild platypus in Tasmania!!! Tasmanian Arboretum is a large park with various species and wildlife. Besides platypus we saw black swan as well ( on the ground, ili silly but cute haha )🤣
We called in here whilst travelling between Stanley and Launceston. A great place to call in for a break. We saw the healthiest grove of Wollemi pines we’ve ever seen, and it really is a great place to see platypus during the day…..we saw two.
Beautiful place. $10 per entry. Take your time and walk around the place. Platypus is just so cute!
Wonderful walks through the gardens and around the lake and then the platypus were everywhere! Such a hidden treasure with hardly any signage.

Absolutely spectacular view from the Mersey Bluff Lighthouse in Devonport Tasmania. Worth the drive, beautiful parks along the way and so clean and well looked after. No cost to visit.
"Mersey Bluff Lighthouse in Devonport, Tasmania, is a historic landmark with stunning views of Bass Strait and the coastline. Built in 1889, its distinctive red and white stripes guide ships safely into port. Enjoy scenic walks, Aboriginal rock carvings and breathtaking sunsets"
Unfortunately we didn't have a great day to see the striped lighthouse but it was an easy walk from the cul-de-sac carpark. I wouldn't tow a caravan up to the lookout though.
Beautiful views with patrolled beaches, parks and shops nearby for some great family fun.
Beautiful area with a nice view of the coast. Something to do when in Devonport and a nice photo opportunity. This is definitely a place where quiet and respect for others and animals is needed and shown. It was a nice little part of our day trip to Devonport
Excellent lighthouse on the Mersey Bluff. It's walkable from Devonport City Centre or a short bike ride or taxi ride. Magnificent views from the Lighthouse.
Wonderful start to a Wednesday morning. Beautiful views and stunning lighthouse.
Little walk up the hill, easy, then around the path to the lighthouse, or you can attempt the harder path to the beach. Went into the little hut to see the artefacts, always interesting. Great spot for a beautiful view. Check out the foghorn shed too. Only operates 12 noon Sundays, sadly missed it.
