THIS IS A WORKERS REVIEW (June 2023):
We worked for two months as strawberry picker / farm worker and shop assistant at Wee Red Barn. We found the job offer on backpackerboard.co.nz during our working holiday year in New Zealand.
PROS:
1. Campsite for cars/vans/tents and accomodation (3 cabins with heating for 2 people each) for workers/backpackers is provided on the property including "community room", 2 toilets and 2 showers.
2. The weekly price for the campsite and accomodation is reasonable:
- campsite: 75NZD per car/van/tent (will be refunded if you work here for 2 months, if less partly).
- cabin: 90NZD (not refundable)
3. If you work during the season, you will sum up many working hours (approx. 7-9h/day) and you can work regardless of the weather. Good for earning money in comparison to other farming jobs, e.g. kiwifruit picking or vineyard work.
4. Payment as well as refund always worked on time and was correct.
CONS:
1. The owners are the unfriendliest people we met in NZ so far and we felt this during our work time here. The boss' mood changes several times a day which can be confusing. They often used a rude tone, swearwords and shouted at the workers which in my opinion is a absolute no-go. Concerning former reviews, I can definitely confirm their disrespectful behaviour. No communication at eye level. Bad vibes are part of the daily work routine, so don't expect that you are treated well here!
2. The "community room" is just an old, shitty shed without a proper heating, an unfunctional chimney and bulky waste, it will get cold inside during autumn/winter, but probably fine during spring/summer.
3. In general the hygiene standards are low and the cleanliness at the campsite/shed was really bad when we arrived, so we cleaned at least partly the shed and the facilities to feel a bit more comfy. So if you want a bit more cleaner, you have to do it yourself. Before we left the shower wasn't for working properly for a week (didn't get warm any more), we told the owners several times to look after, but they didn't fix it. They don't care anything about the campsite and facilities here (where you pay for).
4. Minimum wage for hard work where you need to be physically fit (when you are not picking and planting strawberries which is ok).
5. The work organisation and instructions were sometimes really chaotic, unclear and confusing like switching some tasks too fast without a sense for effiency and then the boss was shouting when something had gone wrong. Unprofessional management and motivation skills if you ask me. Moreover other workers and me often didn't know where to be in the morning because nobody told us and during work many of us were afraid to ask questions because of the boss' rude reactions.
Same applies for knowing when you will have a day off (one day in a week), sometimes we had to ask the boss several times and didn't get a clear answer and consequently working more than 7 days in row. A weekly workplan would be helpful.
The boss is often talking about common sense, but when you look closer to some work procedures and details here, you will just shake your head.
Hint:
1. Care about your own safety, e.g. hand gloves, eye and ear protection as well as face mask, when you are instructed to do work where could be health risks, e.g. loud noise when mowing or dusty work environments. Otherwise nobody else will care.
2. Don't buy frozen strawberry slices from the shop, the are made of partly or completely rotten berries which are stored a few days in the cold store before they get cut and sold (was part of our work) - health risk! This should get an issue for the health office.
Conclusion:
Consider that there are easier jobs for minimum or better wage in NZ where you probably will be treated better.
All in all, I wouldn't recommend working here and rather work for friendly and less greedy people.
