Greymouth

Greymouth is a town on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Its History House Museum has exhibits chronicling the town’s mining and jade-hunting past. To the south, Shantytown Heritage Park is a re-created gold rush town with a museum and steam train. North of Greymouth, the Point Elizabeth Walkway winds along coastal clifftops to the forests of Rapahoe Scenic Reserve, home to abundant birdlife.

The vibe, food and service here was top tier! After a 4hr tranz alpine train ride from Christchurch to Greymouth, I was in need of a good feed and I definitely found it here! I ordered the ribs with beer battered chips, my partner had the fish and chips and we shared the Sunday lamb shoulder roast with gravy on roast potatoes and veges. My partner said the fish and chips were one of the best she has ever had which I promise, says A LOT! Me being allergic to seafood, couldn't partake in the fish lol! The ribs were very tasty thanks to their in-house sauce that the tender ribs were smothered in but those beer battered chips were freaking good! Chips on their own cost $17 which is pretty hefty, but i would pay that again for those chips! The biggest surprise was the lamb shoulder roast. Holy heck were they tender and full of flavour! I'm not a fan of Brussels sprouts but even they tasted amazing! I whole heartedly recommend stopping here for a feed, even if you must take a small detour to Greymouth on your adventure in the South Island.

Monteith’s Brewery is a fantastic spot to visit, even if you’re not there for the drinks. The food was excellent - fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. There’s a great variety on the menu, and everything we tried was cooked perfectly. The location is lovely, with a warm and relaxed atmosphere that makes it perfect for both families and groups of friends. It’s a great place to unwind, enjoy a good meal, and take in the surroundings. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area - it’s a memorable experience for the food and setting alone!

My wife and I did the Monteith's Brewery Tour and stayed on afterwards for a meal. The tour was very good. It was interesting to learn about the history of the brewery, and it was great to get to pour and taste some of the beers. Our guide was really entertaining and knowledgeable too, which made the experience even better. The meal afterwards was first-class. The service was spot-on, and the food was excellent. Thank you Monteith's for such a great experience...on such a wet and windy day in Greymouth :)

We did the brewery tour with Toni and she was awesome! It ended up being only myself and my partner doing it and she gave us advice on different beers to try along with local knowledge of events on over the weekend we were visiting. Totally recommend 👌 she's awesome at her job

The visit surpassed my expectations. I’ve visited many historic artefacts displays but this was one of the best. Real quality stuff to see. Priceless steam trains, printing presses, medical equipment all sorts. Great to wander through the timber mill with lots of video displays. A working classic steam train. Probably a visit loved more by the guys than guyesses.

Awesome activities with kids, mine were ages 12, 14 & 16 and all were entertained and enjoyed themselves, the gold panning was the highlight as well as playing around with the prison and reading the orewa hospital medicines. 100% highly recommended. A bit pricy for the whole experience $145 but worth it for all 5 of us.

We came on a busy day as they had a tourism convention going on, so parking was hard to find (this is not normal). We had a great time stepping back in time and walking around the town. There is a cafeteria for lunch or a snack /coffee etc and if you have a letter to post, if you take it with you, you can have it postmarked from Shantytown. There is a train ride you can take and the guide is very knowledgeable about the history. He operated an old sluice to demonstrate how they used to fire water at the rock they wanted to mine for. After that, the optional $10 per person will give you an opportunity to pan for Gold and you are given excellent instructions on how to do this. A great place to take the whole family! If you're going to do panning, allocate 2-3 hours minimum for this visit.

You can’t miss this place when visiting the West Coast! You can ride the steam train, revisit the past at the museum, have some coffee and food, try to get lucky and pan for gold, or hang out at the playground. Locals can get a great deal with an annual ticket ☺️👌🏽 Awesome place to come with kids.

Having lived in greymouth for the first 30 years of my life. I have visited many times. It has changed a lot. Definitely worth visiting at least once. Train rides three times a day. Open 7 days. There is a café also. Gold panning is available for $10 per person. Panning is part of the train ride. Getting gold from panning is garunteed. At the time of typing this review, gold is $7000 for a teaspoon( one ounce) of gold. So, the $10 fee for panning is well worth it.

Absolutely loved it, make sure to come early to give yourself time to walk around, lots o d history, steam train was an exciting experience and I loved the uniqueness of the town. Don’t know what all the negative reviews are for, I came when there was no costume actors around and I think they have done a wonderful job at showing the history. The lady in the front is also very kind and sweet. Highly recommend coming here if you love history

Not what i expected, I have been to some great well maintained heritage villages and this is not one if them. Gives you a very basic insight into the past from a museum built 54 years ago and not maintained. Dirty dusty and dark, could do with a spring clean better lighting and more props.

Very busy between 10am-2pm to manage check-in for 2:05 TranzAlpine train to Christchurch and the arrival and baggage collection of the TranzAlpine from Christchurch at 1:05pm. Check-in was simply and baggage can be checked in from 10am. A well stocked and extensive range of NZ and West Coast souvenirs at reasonable prices; eg: 2 original brand tshirts for $20 is very good value. Conveniently, the car rental companies operate out of this location. The staff were very helpful and efficient during this busy time.

Shout out to Helen for the amazing itinerary organised for our group. Had the best two nights travelling on the TranzAlpine train, being picked up by Helen both days and exploring the area with a local. Great stay at Hotel Lake Brunner for two nights. Lunch at Monteiths, explored the Brunner mine, were spellbound at the Punikaiki Rocks, stunning afternoon tea by the Wild West coast beach, hot tubs by Lake Brunner. And then there was the star of the show - our guide Helen. Nothing was too much for Helen. She was relaxed and fun, and knew her stuff. Thank you for making a bucket list experience for one of our crew so special.

Highly recommend this place. I would especially thank Helen for saving our west coast trip. We’ve ran into some issues with a rental company and don’t have a car to franz Josef. We were stressed at that time, as we don’t have any other way to get to franz Josef. It’s already late and the visitor center is closing, but Helen kindly offered us a taxi service to franz Josef. She was really professional and kind. Highly recommend this place if you want to book a trip.

My husband & I were abandoned by our camper car hire company (Jucy) in Greymouth, when our car broke down while passing through the town, and the wonderful lady at your information centre helped us book a bus to Christchurch. She was extremely professional, helpful and pleasant and we would like to say a BIG ‘Thank you’ to her (I’m sorry, but because of our confusion at the time we cannot remember her name). We will never forget your kindness in our time of need.

Popped in here a couple of times as the street signs are so confusing in Greymouth. Staff were super helpful and friendly, knew where everything was and answered all my questions. Told me about a freedom camping spot that wasn't even on the app. Only suggestion is that they recommend showers at the rec center as they are very good.

Immediately after getting off the Tranz Alpine train, Kelly at the i-Site visitor desk helped us book a full day tour with Explore West Coast for the next day. We didn’t have cellular service so she called and confirmed availability and sent emails to us confirming the details. When we were checking in for the train ride back Kelly even remembered our name from several days earlier. This was a great help and highly recommend stopping in to have a chat at the desk. This was quite a rutted and rough road to get there, so I just went slowly. Good parking and a nice 45 min peaceful loop track. Take a wee torch or phone. It's nice to read the stories and hard to imagine a hustling community of men working so hard for their gold!!

It’s a long drive in on a mostly rough gravel road. At a minimum you will need an SUV as there are some deep ruts near the end. Our Toyota Highlander made it with no issues. We showed up at 4:00pm on a weekday and nobody else was there. A bit creepy as the area is quite isolated. Easy 45 minute loop track walk. Cool suspension bridge. The old mine tunnels were a bit dangerous for our tastes.

Road to the track is gravel for about 5kms . Easy walk with a few steps some steep. Beautiful Rimu forest to walk through very peaceful with bird song. Enjoyed the walk which loops around.

Phenomenal hidden gem well worth the gravel road to get there. Well formed tracks and steps take you on a loop of tunnels and water raceways. The tunnel to explore is well worth it so remember to bring a torch or headlight to really enjoy this walk. Will recommend to anyone who will listen. Unfortunately not pram or wheelchair friendly but suitable for all others.

Such an amazing walking track. It is a 20 minute drive which ends in a dirt track. The walk has so much to see and do, from rivers to cave tunnels. This is definitely a must when visiting Greymouth in any weather.

A little off the beaten track, but worth the effort. Be very careful if you are visiting in a hire car, as the track leading to the car park is made up of really large stones, gravel and is very uneven! Once there, the trail is easy to follow and takes you through some amazing forest scenery. Take a torch, be prepared for steps and a rope bridge! We really enjoyed it and had the forest all to ourselves that afternoon.

Beautiful spot to watch the waves crashing against the rocks and admire the view of the ocean. There is a Greymouth sign, with a viewing platform on top. Plenty of parking when I went, but on a busy day, watch out for the narrow roads in and out. You can drive all the way to the end and park

Visited this spot during a tropical storm, hence the stirred up water, but what a sight! I loved seeing how the sea waves interacted with the Grey river current where they met. It was blowing a gale too. There are toilets maybe 100M back down the road and there's some interesting plaques to read. Well worth checking out!
