In a nut shell :Beautiful and Fascinating Botanical Garden.
We came here by chance. Our original plans were cancelled, so we decided to visit this garden instead.
It was a pleasant 25 minutes walk from our hotel in the city center, mostly along the ocean. On the way we passed the large and beautiful market of Santa Cruz, the impressive Tenerife Auditorium, and more.
When we arrived, we paid €6 per adult and were about to go in, when we were asked if we wanted to join a guided tour included in the price. Of course we said yes. And it was a very good decision. We joined Agostino, who gave us a private tour that was truly interesting and informative.
We first learned that Agostino is a retired teacher from the Tenerife education system, with a degree in botany and a huge love for plants and for people. He does this as a volunteer every Friday. We were lucky to arrive at the right time.
With his guidance, we got to know the different sections of the garden, each representing a country or region of the world. The main focus of the garden is palm trees. It holds one of the largest collections of different palm species from all over the world. There are also many other plants and trees. For example, he showed us a special development from Tenerife: blue bananas and red bananas. They look like bananas and you peel them like bananas, but they have a unique taste.
Everything is very well maintained and aesthetic, while keeping the natural conditions needed for the plants.
We also learned that the garden was established in 1995 on the old landfill of Santa Cruz. There are a few points in the garden where gas is still released from underground, but apart from that, you would never guess this used to be a huge dump.
For those arriving by car, there is a large free parking lot right next to the garden entrance.
In short, it’s a beautiful and fascinating place. Agostino’s guided tour added a lot of depth and interest, and really elevated the whole experience.
With or without a guided tour, this garden is highly recommended.
