From Fukuoka’s Cat Island, to the scenic beauty of Uji and Arashiyama, soak in the rejuvenating hot springs of Kusatsu Onsen, and end in the dazzling energy of Tokyo! 🐈🍵🍁♨️🏙️✨

Welcome

I planned this trip with the goal of experiencing both Japan’s vibrant city life and its more traditional, relaxing side. While there’s plenty of travel information on Kyoto and Tokyo, I found fewer resources on Fukuoka and Kusatsu Onsen, so I hope to contribute to that gap.
This trip exceeded all my expectations, and I only wish I had more time to take it all in. Hopefully, this guide will inspire you to explore beyond the usual tourist spots and discover more of what Japan has to offer.
Since this is my first travel guide, I appreciate any feedback!

Before the Trip

Tips on booking flights ✈️:
  • To keep an eye on airfare trends, I set up a Google Flights tracker. Google Flights' price tracking feature allowed me to monitor fares, receive alerts on price changes, and compare different flight options to ensure I got the best deal.
  • If you don’t mind skipping a direct flight, Jetstar (if you are from Australia) offers free return flight deals throughout the year. I recommend signing up for a Jetstar Club membership to receive sale alerts and gain access to exclusive discounts before they’re released to the public. That said, we didn’t take advantage of the free return deal because we wanted to avoid layovers.
  • Autumn is a popular tourist season in Japan, especially during the peak of the red foliage. To get the best deals and secure your ideal flights, I recommend booking the flights at least 3 to 4 months in advance.
  • Since there are no direct flights from Australia (where I’m from) to Fukuoka, we had to spend a night on a layover in Tokyo. It actually worked out for the better, as we were exhausted after the nine-hour flight.
Flights to book:
Flight to Tokyo
Return flight from Tokyo to home country
Tokyo to Fukuoka One-Way
Tips for booking accommodations 🏨:
  • I recommend booking your hotels as early as possible. I booked all our hotels on Booking.com way in advance and was able to get the early birds discount.
  • When booking hotels, try to stay close to public transport. I always do a quick Google Maps search to check out the surroundings. My preference is somewhere near a station and a convenience store.
  • Make sure your hotel offers luggage delivery service, it was an absolute lifesaver for our trip! You can usually find this info on the hotel's homepage. Most hotel websites now have an English language option, but if not, Google Translate and Google Map are your best friends.
Accomodations to book:
One night in Tokyo near the airport (optional depending on if you can fly direct into Fukuoka)
Three nights in Fukuoka
Three nights in Kyoto
Two nights in Kusatsu Onsen
Five nights in Tokyo
Tips for booking Shinkansen (bullet train) tickets 🚄:
  • For this trip, we do not need the JR Rail Pass.
  • There are a few ways to buy tickets. You can go through a third-party vendor like Klook or Rail Ninja, book directly on SmartEX, or purchase them in person once you're in Japan. I chose SmartEX, as it was the most cost-effective option and process was pretty easy.
  • Tickets are usually available to book 30 days before the departure date or sometime earlier (schedule time and seat might change if you book too early).
Tips for booking overnight bus tickets💺:
  • Unfortunately, there’s no direct route from Kyoto to Kusatsu Onsen, so we opted for an overnight bus. While traveling by train is possible, it requires multiple transfers, so the bus made more sense for us. Plus, taking the overnight option gave us another full day to enjoy in Kyoto.
  • You can book the tickets from here.
  • I booked the 10pm night route from Kyoto Station Hachijo Guchi F3 to Karuizawa Station.
Tickets to book:
One-Way Shinkansen ticket for Fukuoka to Kyoto
One-Way Overnight Express Bus ticket for Kyoto to Karuizawa
Money talk 💰:
  • Exchange some money in advance, but not your entire trip budget. It’s always helpful to have some cash on hand when arriving in a foreign country. That said, most places we visited in Japan this time accepted card payments, so there’s no need to exchange a large amount before your trip.
  • You can withdraw cash from ATMs in convenience stores as needed during your stay. The best place to withdraw cash in Japan is at convenience stores like 7-Eleven.
  • To get the best exchange rate, always choose to pay or convert in Japanese yen rather than your home currency. This way, your bank will handle the conversion at a better exchange rate. Otherwise, the cash exchange machine's rate will apply, which is usually less favourable.
  • If you plan to use a card for payments in Japan, make sure you have a Visa card, as it's widely accepted. Also, don’t forget to notify your bank before your trip to avoid any transactions being flagged as suspicious activity.
Activities to book in advance 👩🏽‍💻:
One month out
  1. TeamLab Planet (book on KLOOK or via this link)
  2. Capy Neko Cafe (click here to book)
  3. Shibuya Sky (book on KLOOK)
Two weeks out
  1. Sagano Scenic Train Ride (click here to book)
  2. Nakasu River Night Cruise (click here to book)
What to pack 🧳:
  • Dress in layers. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, but the days often stay warm. You will want to add or remove layers as the temperature changes.
  • Pack clothes that are dryer-safe if you are planning on doing laundry. Many hotels in Japan have laundry machines and dryers, so make sure your clothes can handle the heat, I found this out the hard way. 😅
  • Bring a power bank and a travel adapter. You will use your phone constantly for navigating, taking photos, researching etc., so the battery won’t last all day.
  • Consider getting an AirTag. It’s a great way to track your luggage when using Japan’s luggage forwarding services.
  • Pack comfortable walking shoes. You will be on your feet a lot, and the right shoes make a big difference.
  • Don’t forget a small carry-on or foldable duffle bag. This is super useful for overnight stays when your main suitcase has been sent ahead. You will need it for storing essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes etc.

Departure & Layover in Tokyo

1

Narita International Airport

International airport
Airport
We flew direct from Brisbane to Narita, and arrived at Terminal 3. The customs line was a bit long, but it moved steadily, so it wasn’t too bad. 🛬
2

Lawson Narita International Airport Terminal 3

Convenience store
After clearing customs and picking up the luggage, it’s worth stopping by the airport convenience store to grab a quick meal or snack. This is also a good place to take out some cash if you haven't yet done so.
If staying near Narita Airport, keep in mind that the area is generally quiet in the evenings, so it’s a good chance to take it easy after the long flight and settle in for an early night at the hotel.
3

Narita Tobu Hotel Airport

Hotel
Japanese-style business hotel
We took the free airport shuttle bus to Terminal 2, where our hotel offers a free shuttle service from Bus Stop No. 25. Click here to see the free airport shuttle bus schedule. 🚏
We were traveling as a group of four, so for the first night, we booked a Quadruple Room with Four Single Beds. The room was surprisingly spacious for a Japanese hotel, and the beds were really comfortable too.
It costed us 27,540 yen for one night, which we split evenly.

If you arrived early and want some activity to do, I recommend checking out this place.
It's a facility that offers natural hot springs, restaurants, and other relaxation amenities. ♨️

You can enter the building through the side entrance and take the elevator to the lobby. Check-in at Japanese hotels is usually in the afternoon, around 3 PM, so leave your luggage with the front desk in the meantime.
Arriving in a new city, we were so excited and eager to explore, so we decided to walk to the lunch spot. The stroll felt like the perfect way to start the adventure.
On the way to the lunch spot, you’ll pass by Hakata Station, which is a great opportunity to purchase a physical IC card. Head into the station and look for one of the ticket machines to buy your card. If you’re unsure how to use the machine, ask one of the station staff for assistance.

First meal in Fukuoka!
Located near the Hakata station, Kiwamiya Hakata is known for the delicious Japanese hamburger steak (ハンバーグ ステーキ).🥩
You get to cook your own steak on a small hot stone. When the stone gets cold, the staff will replace it with a new one. If you get the set that comes with side dishes such as rice, salad and miso soup, you can ask for more free of charge as many times as you want. 🍚
Unfortunately, you won't be able to book in advance, so be prepared to queue. We waited around 40 minutes, which isn’t too bad for a popular restaurant during lunch rush in Japan. It was totally worth the wait, the meat was so tender and delicious! 🥹

Hotel
After exploring the shopping arcade, head back to the hotel to finish checking in and rest for a bir before dinner. My partner and I booked the Double Room with Tatami Areas, which costed us 42,768 yen for three nights.
Like most Japanese hotels, the room was a bit small with limited space to walk around. We had two big suitcases, so we had to play a bit of Tetris to make everything fit efficiently. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows they provided were buckwheat pillow (they are really firm). I suggest asking the front desk for softer pillows if you find it too hard.
One of the main reasons we booked this hotel is because it has a public bath area. Both the men’s and women’s baths feature indoor and semi-open-air baths. In your room, you’ll find towels, slippers, and pyjamas. ♨️
From our experience, the bath area gets a lot busier at night, especially around 9pm. That said, you can keep track of the status via the TV in your room. When you check in, you'll be given an access card, which you’ll need to get into the bath area. This is how they keep track of how busy it is.

We had a wonderful stay at this onsen ryokan in Shinjuku. The highlight was definitely the rooftop onsen, where we could soak in the hot spring bath while enjoying a beautiful view of the city skyline. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring Tokyo.
While it's in Shinjuku, the nearest train station requires a bit of a walk. It wasn't a major issue for us, but something to keep in mind if you have heavy luggage or prefer easy access to public transit. Overall, if you're looking for a relaxing and unique stay in Tokyo with a fantastic onsen experience, this ryokan is a great choice.
