Areas to stay
These are some of the areas we've stayed in before. We would recommend staying in once place (max 2) and taking day trips out to anything you want to do.

Nusa dua
Beach
The nice resort area in Bali. Most resorts have well maintained private beach access or beach clubs (private beach via shuttle from hotel)

Seminyak
Area with fun food options, calm water beaches, sunsets. Typical crowd 20's and 30's. Also known for nightlife (which we have never done)

Uluwatu
This whole area is cliffside beaches. Surfer town (not for beginners). Really pretty views and quieter than other touristy areas. All beach access in this area requires walking down lots of steps. (would recommend staying closer to Padang Padang Beach, not where the pin is)

Ubud
The only recommendation that's NOT by the beach. It is in the mountainous area. Pretty terraced rice patties, nearby waterfalls. Overall vibe is more traditional Hindu Indonesian + western Yogis takeover

Canggu
A little north of Seminyak, the new cool hangout place. Less developed than Seminyak. Good for beginner surfing. Near Tanah Lot (picture ->)

Sanur
Beach
Outdoor Activities
Resorts (less fancy than Nusa Dua) and good food mostly walking distance. Generally convenient for getting to other areas as well.

Nusa Lembongan
Island
boat snorkeling - book a snorkeling boat tour. includes: transportation from hotel, snorkeling via boat at 3 spots, lunch

Batur Mountain
Nature preserve
Mt. Batur sunrise trek. book a tour, includes transportation from hotel and a hiking guide (hike isn't difficult, but you need one to support the local economy)

Ceking Rice Terrace
Scenic spot
Sights & Landmarks
Tegalalang rice terrace. LOTS of cafes along the rice terraces where you can hang out with a view. They also let you walk around the rice paddies if you want (beware: slippery and muddy if you fall!)

would go here, and then hang out at/near Single Fin just to enjoy the cliffside ocean views

Balinese temple on the water. It's in all the pictures, but not much to it. Can access the temple without getting wet during low tide

This is randomly pinned place. Get some beginner surfing lessons. There ARE people on beaches offering lessons, but you might get better quality if you book something online.

Monkey Forest

visit a monkey sanctuary. We do not like monkeys though, but this is on every Bali travel recommendation list
Aside from these, just wander around town, enjoy the beach, eat good food.
Lots of public beaches will have chair + umbrella rentals, usually at a daily rate. There are also lots of beach clubs where you can enjoy the beach views without the sand
