Avid Travelling Family - we did the Mae Hon Son Loop in 2022 and we enjoyed our time so much. We learned a lot on the loop and there isn't a lot about travelling the loop as most people head straight to Pai from Chiang Mai so we are helping change that.
General tips
Top tips:
Fuelling stations are rare - so when you see one make sure you are filling up.
The locals don't speak English so if you can learn a little Thai it'll go a long way and you may have to prepare for surprise dishes for dinner!
The roads are super windy, you'll have to drive slow and keep alert.
This will be your start point! Our top hotel here is: The Rimping Village. Whilst you are here be sure to visit the night market.
2
Elephant Nature Park
Animal shelter
Park
The most ethical elephant park there is. You could do a day trip here from Chiang Mai either before or after you do the loop or integrate it into your journey if you do the package where you spend the night.
Great experience for everyone.
3
Chiang Dao
Recommended place to stay: Serenity1 Homestay
The lady who runs this homestay is very helpful and friendly, gorgeous views.
4
Chiang Dao Cave
Must go
Cool pit stop - you WILL need a guide. Without one you will categorically get lost.
5
Chiang Rai
This is a DETOUR and does not make up part of the Mae Hon Song Loop but this would be the part where you would come off the loop and then come back to it before Pai. Ideally, you'd want to spend at least 3 days here.
6
Pai
It is worth staying here for a few nights as a pit stop although some find it touristy, but there is a few things to do. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend the accommodation we stayed in.
The walking street market is popular.
7
Pai Canyon
Nature & Parks
Canyons
A comfortable hike with stunning views.
8
Tha Pai Hot Spring
Nature & Parks
Hot Springs & Geysers
A fun day out, you'll meet locals and see some of their traditions - egg boiling in the springs! Part is perfect to sit and chill in too.
9
Kho Ku So Bamboo Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Bridges
Another fantastic tourist attraction but it won't be beautiful and green if you're visiting in dry season.
10
Ban Rak Thai
Must go
Sights & Landmarks
This off-the-track village is known for its tea plantations and authentic Yunnanese cuisine.
It was originally settled by Chinese KMT soldiers in the late 1940s.
Enjoy tea tasting sessions with peaceful surroundings. We enjoyed our tea tasting session whilst out on a cute little boat – definitely a recommended activity.
11
Huay Pu Keng - Kayan Village
This hidden long neck village we believe is one of the more traditional. There is another situated closer to Pai but this Village is off the beaten track. We enjoyed talking to the locals, we were invited in for food and it was a great experience.
12
Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu Nuea
Buddhist temple
There are plenty of temples in this region and is a peaceful place to stop for a couple of nights.
We stayed at Jasmin Resort and it was a pleasant stay.
13
Mae Sariang
This village is perfect for a relaxing, more Thai authentic stay. We stayed at the Riverhouse - Teak House. It was a fantastic place to stay but be warned, every noise can be heard!
14
Salawin National Park Rangers Station (Sala)
Park
During your stay in Mae Sariang it is well worth taking a little detour off the loop to the National Park.
15
Doi Inthanon
Must go
Mountain peak
The highest mountain in Thailand, you'll find waterfalls, villages and dreamy views.
