Avid traveler and passionate explorer, I spent two unforgettable weeks island-hopping and diving across the Banggai Islands in 2025. Having explored Indonesia from Bali to Papua, Banggai blew me away with its raw beauty and authentic local experiences

General tips

Bring cash as ATMs are limited, especially on the smaller islands.
The Banggai region is off the beaten track, so prepare for basic facilities. English isn’t widely spoken, but the warm greetings more than make up for any language barrier.
Respect local customs: dress modestly in villages, ask before taking photos of people, and try local foods with an open mind.
Internet is slow and patchy so set your out of office and embrace the digital detox!

Best time to visit: April to Sept for sunny weather and calm seas. Rains may close some roads or muddy waterfall trails during the wet season.

Day 1

Arrival in Luwuk and First Taste of Paradise

Piala Waterfall

Your first stop after landing in Luwuk. This stunning turquoise cascade features multiple tiers perfect for swimming and photos. Just 15 minutes from town, it's the ideal jet lag cure. The pools are refreshing and surrounded by lush greenery. Arrive early morning to avoid any crowds.

Beach

Luwuk's most famous beach offers soft white sand and crystal-clear water. Great for a relaxing afternoon swim or snorkel session. The beach has basic facilities and is easy to reach from town (5km away). Sunset views here are spectacular.

Wander the harbor area to watch fishing boats come in with their daily catch. Stop by local markets to sample tropical fruits and get your first taste of authentic Sulawesi street food. The energy here gives you a real feel for local life.

Land at Luwuk Airport and take an ojek (motorcycle taxi) to your hotel (around 25k IDR). Drop your bags, freshen up, then hire an ojek or rent a scooter to visit Piala Waterfall. Return to town for lunch at a local warung. Afternoon at Kilo 5 Beach. Evening stroll through the harbor area and dinner at Luwuk Seafood KM 5 for fresh grilled fish.

Day 2

Ferry to Peleng Island and the Bluest Lake in Indonesia

Danau Paisu Pok Luk Panenteng

Paisupok lake is the crown jewel of Banggai. This impossibly blue lake on western Peleng Island looks like something from a dream. Rent a paddleboard, kayak, or small boat to explore its mirror-like surface. The water is so clear you can see over 40 meters down. Bring your snorkel gear to discover the underwater beauty. Visit early morning on weekends to have it nearly to yourself.

Paisu Batango Spring Bath

Just a 5-minute drive from Paisupok, this natural spring lagoon offers brackish, crystal-clear water surrounded by palm trees. Perfect for a refreshing swim, though locals sometimes use it for bathing, so be respectful

Pantai Poganda

Halfway between Leme Leme and Paisupok, this white sand beach is fantastic for snorkeling. You'll spot colorful starfish in the shallows, vibrant coral reefs, and tropical fish. The beach has swings and a pier for relaxing. Great for sunrise or sunset depending on the season.

Take the morning ferry from Luwuk to Leme Leme on Peleng Island (2-3 hours). Arrange scooter rental at your accommodation. Head straight to Paisupok Lake (1 hour ride, roads can be rough). Spend several hours exploring the lake. Stop at Paisu Batango Lagoon on the way back. Finish at Poganda Beach for sunset and snorkeling

Wisata Bone Pompon

Hidden cove on Banggai Laut reachable by boat from Salakan. Stunning turquoise water and powdery sand make this a photographer's dream.

Bajau Village

Meet the Bajau "sea gypsies" who live in stilt houses over the water. These incredible free-divers and fishermen are wonderfully welcoming. Wake early to visit Pasar Ikan Salakan (fish market) at dawn for an authentic cultural experience. You might even get invited on an impromptu boat ride.

Hire a private driver or brave the 3-hour scooter ride from Leme Leme to Salakan. Stop at Gua Bab'banang and Gua Susundeng caves along the way. Arrive in Salakan by early afternoon and check into Wisma Sidapore. Visit Mandel Beach or arrange a boat to Pompon Beach. Explore the Bajau village before dinner at a local warung

Day 4

Banggai Laut Island Paradise and Endemic Wildlife

Bontolan Beach

Located 15 minutes from Banggai Laut town, this beach is excellent for snorkeling. The real treasure lies underwater where you can spot the endemic Banggai cardinalfish, found nowhere else on Earth except this archipelago. These striking black and white fish with delicate patterns school around anemones.

Pantai Oyama

A tiny hidden cove accessible only by 10-minute boat ride from Lokotoy or Popisi village (50-150k IDR for return trip). This private paradise features white sand, turquoise shallows, and colorful green lizards in the surrounding trees. A boardwalk leads to mangrove forests behind the beach.

Pulau Dua

If time permits, hike to the top of Pulau Dua Hill for breathtaking panoramic views over scattered islands and the vast blue ocean. It's nicknamed the "Padar Island of Sulawesi" for good reason. The 10-15 minute hike is worth every step.

Take the morning speedboat from Salakan to Banggai Laut (arrange through accommodation). Rent a scooter and ride to Bontolan Beach for snorkeling with Banggai cardinalfish. Head north to Lokotoy or Popisi village and hire a boat to Oyama Beach. Spend the afternoon swimming and exploring. If time allows, visit Pulau Dua viewpoint. Return to Salakan or Luwuk for your departure.
