Visited Ljubljana for a few days in Summer 2025

General tips

Ljubljana itself is very walkable. Get an accommodation in the city and walk around!
Most people speak English, so don't need to worry too much about that.

Day 1

Ljubljana
1

Ljubljana Airport

International airport
Airport
Small airport. There are very few light food options, so recommend waiting until you get to Ljubljana Center. There's a visitor info station that isn't really staffed. There is an ATM for use
The bus station when you walk out is straight in front of you, a ~1 minute walk. Schedules are posted at the bus station, and Google Maps is correct, too. Make sure to have small bills! The bus to Ljubljana is about 4 euros, but the drivers don't always have cash back, especially with a large crowd of tourists who all pay in big bills. I had to wait for a 2nd bus.

Burek Olimpija

cheap
Fast food restaurant
Restaurant
Considered the best Burek in Slovenia. Minced meat wasn't amazing, but crust was. Could see another flavor being great.
This is a stand, and there's a counter on the street side of the sidewalk to eat if you'd like.

ATIK ROOMS

Hotel
Enjoy your first views of downtown as you walk in!
Checked in. Can be hot and stuffy, and there are 2 bathrooms for 4 rooms. It does the job, but not the most comfortable accommodation. Make sure you can haul your luggage up the stairs yourself. Great location, though

Julija

affordable
Restaurant
Tried to get a seat here without a reservation. It's not possible for after 6, but if you walk-in before 6, you're likely to get a seat. Considered one of the best restaurants in Ljubljana

Tivoli Park

City park
Nature & Parks
Parks
Nice little part to see. It's huge, but only a small part of it is open to the city. The rest is through the woods to other locations. There's a good promenade if you keep walking where you can see the city "skyline".
This would be a good spot to sit down and relax or bike. I walked through, which was fine, but recommend spending time with somebody else here.

Restavracija Most

affordable
Restaurant
Decent restaurant right on the river, but had bees. Covered outdoor seating.
Not too expensive for the quality of food they offered for the location, but not a standout, either. I had Fuzi Pasta with Beef Tenderloin (strips) and Istrian Truffles. It was solid, for only 20 euros, and satisfying enough despite looking like a small amount of food.
I was bothered by flies the whole time.

Day 2

Caves & Castles
1

Predjama Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Took a guided tour to here from City Hotel. The guide was interesting on the drive, but they don't guide you in the castle itself. The castle entrance and audioguide were included in the price of the guided tour.
The castle is a walk-through museum built into a cliff. Very interesting history. Can visit by yourself via public transit, though unclear how often public transit comes.

2

Postojna Cave

Nature preserve
Cave system where you take a train 15 minutes in - one of the most beautiful rides you'll see with the carefully-placed lighting.
It's an hour on foot through the caves with stops, where one of the cave's guides talks (hard to hear) at a few stations. The groups are hundreds of people, though. Note there's only a paid restrooms at the end within the caves. Unpaid restrooms are outside the caves. Make sure to bring a sweatshirt, since it gets a little chilly. You really only notice it on the way out once the excitement has worn off and the train pushes the air into your face.
Outside the caves is a whole area with food, restrooms, if you'd like to eat lunch.

3

Gostilnica 5-6 kg

affordable
Restaurant
Off-the-tourist-path location with fantastic pizza for solid prices. English menu exists if you ask. Between Ljubljana, Bled, and Venice, this was the 2nd-best pizza I had. I ordered a mushroom white pizza. The crust was fluffy.
7 min · 0.38 mi
4

Roman Wall

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Not worth a visit unless you're already over here. The Roman ruins are small and not that interesting
18 min · 0.92 mi
5

Ljubljana Castle Funicular

Castle
You can take the fernicular up to the castle or walk. The fernicular doesn't provide views that the castle doesn't also provide. Recommend skipping if you're in-shape and have time to spare for the walk up.

6

Ljubljana Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Most of the castle is free! Only a few buildings require proof of purchase to enter. There is an audioguide, though it's not incredibly useful. If you're just going for views and reading, there is no need for the audioguide.
Most of the paid stuff is skipable if you're only spending a couple hours up here. The one thing that may be worth it is the lookout from the viewing tower, where you can see 360 degrees with sweeping views of the castle, city, surroundings, and the alps. Also check out the 4D animated castle history film if you've paid.

7

Open kitchen

Restaurant
Friday-only market and it's bustling! There are 10s of pop-up food vendors with their own mini-kitchens. Walk around and find all sorts of worldwide cuisines, including for snacks, entrees, and desserts.
They have music playing, and you can sit on the stairs to eat.

8

Moji štruklji Slovenije

affordable
Restaurant
Struklji are a Slovenian traditional dumpling. It's basically a hot cake with some skin. Even the flavors aren't cream, just flavored cake. Interesting to try once, but you really have to like cake to like it. Very filling, however.

Day 3

Ljubljana Again
1

EK BISTRO

expensive
Bistro
Nice little spot for breakfast. A little pricey for breakfast (more like lunch prices), but on the water, with outdoor seating, and decent food. I ordered avocado toast with a poached egg on top. It was still tasty.
8 min · 0.41 mi
2

Ljubljana Free Tour

Tour operator
Sightseeing tour agency
2-hour walking tour that brings you around the city. Recommend doing this on day 1, since I had already walked by most of the spots they brought us to.
However, very interesting topics they talk to you about, that you wouldn't learn just from walking around.
2 min · 0.1 mi
3

Pop's place

affordable
Gastropub
Restaurant
Highly recommended burger place. It's ok by American standards and admittedly has interesting topics, but the beef blend wasn't amazing. Hard to find seating
2 min · 500 ft
4

Vigò

affordable
Pastry shop
Ice cream shop
Homemade gelato, very tasty. You know it's homemade if they have the metal containers, because gelato goes bad in them after a day. I got coconut stracchiatella and blueberry - both delicious (blueberry especially)
6 min · 0.31 mi
5

Chocolarium - čokoladni muzej

Museum
Museum for chocolate. The museum itself is geared toward kids, though they do guide you through some rooms and explain things that are interesting.
You go for the last room, where they have ~100 chocolate samples you can sample. Not for germaphobes, but a good way to eat chocolate flavored with all sorts of random fruit, random spices.
7 min · 0.36 mi
6

Gostilna Sokol

affordable
Restaurant
Sokol has a number of traditional Slovenian (and some Austrian) dishes. I had a venison goulash in a bread bowl, which was delicious. If you're still hungry after the goulash is gone, just eat the bread.
