If you take all of the detours possible, it's considerably longer than 7 miles. My GPS had it pegged at 12 1/2 miles. (Yes, all the additional trails, mind you.) There were a plethora of downed trees along the off-the-beaten path trails and a couple of places where the blazing was confusing (namely around the 2 mile red blazing marker along the drainage valley.) There was also 2 downed trees blocking the trail and only one might be a spot of bother for those trail-riding. (it's close to 3ft tall without a ramp and on a down-hill so if you're not paying attention there might be a crash and ruining a front rim along with some pride.) The trail was in good shape for the most part and it wasn't so muddy that you couldn't traverse without getting knee deep in the mud. (Well, there is one crossing near the 6.5mi marker on the north side of the lake that is probably mid-thigh if you try to cross it - and it hadn't rained in a few days.) Even if it's been a few days, be prepared to get a touch muddy. For the entire hike, I saw 4 people and two dogs for six hours of hiking. (This doesn't include gentlemen fishing on their boats in the lake, mind you.) One gentleman had his two dogs out walking (who lived right off the lake) and another who was getting miles in for a section hike of the PCT in the Sierras in July. The last was a couple on a leisurely stroll. There was plenty of wildlife sign out (deer, raccoons, turkeys) and I saw one tall Tom close to the trail that bumps up against Fisherville Road. I didn't encounter any wasps, hornets, ground wasps, snakes, ticks, or spiders on my walk but I figure in a month they will be out. I'm not looking forward to that. The lake trails are the gem of the area, in terms of getting away from it all and having a lovely walk in the woods. If you're going to get miles in without the possibility of being run over by trail riders or runners, it's the place to go.

Unfortunately it’s in the middle of a scary part of town. The campground is nice with water and electric sites and an awesome locked bathhouse with an attached locked laundry. The local law enforcement and rangers patrol often at the campground so it feels safe despite the surrounding area. There was one campground host in an old rv covered by a blue tarp. It was not hooked to any water so I assumed the plumbing didn’t work. I saw the host washing dishes at a hose on the site next door. I was sad to see this and had a hard time believing that the park administration allowed such an eyesore to stay at the campground. The host could not help us when we arrived at our site that was occupied by other campers. We had had our reservations for over a month. I’m not sure what the host does except live there. There are nice hiking trails here, though they could use some maintenance. There are rail trails nearby. Just be careful where you go. Don’t stop in areas with bars on the windows. The park is absolutely beautiful and full of space to explore. The playground area is fun, colorful, and perfect for younger kids my daughter had the best time. Watching her smile and enjoy herself made the whole trip more than worth it. That said, it was very packed when we went. It’s clearly a popular spot, especially on nice days. One downside was that some parents weren’t really watching their kids, and a few children were being pretty rough and playing in a way that didn’t feel very safe for the younger ones. I definitely had to keep a closer eye on my daughter than expected. Still, the park itself is amazing there’s so much to do, from walking trails to open fields and the lake. If you’re looking for a fun, active day with your kids, Shelby Farms is a great place to go. So with the ambiance and great food, we had a great anniversary celebration with professional sevice from our waiter, Bryan. Saturday, was part 2 of our SFP experience. I surprised my husband with a one private horse back ride. The weather could not have been more perfect! We were led on the trail by one of best trail leaders ever, Laura or Lady (nickname). It was our first time riding and I shared with Laura that I was "low-key" freaking out. lol! but Laura encouraged me and promised I would relax within several minutes and she was absolutely right! The ride was so peaceful and enjoyable and capped off our anniversary time at the park!

Rules are rules and it is acceptable that I was late, but when this custodian observed us feet from the gate and smuggly gets into his van and drives away, you can only be left with a bad experience. This wasn't the best of it, the dude returns 10 minutes later, checks the lock and quickly jumps back into his van where his female companion photographs and laughs at us sitting on the other side of the gate. We sat there baffled at this person's behavior. He reversed from the entrance to never return leaving us to call the Memphis Police to let us out. Yes, we were late for a time we were unaware of but the subsequent behavior is very uncalled for and left my family unnecessarily worried for the situation. I sure hope this employee enjoyed his bit of fun and has a blessed life. Do better. Other than this, the area is very wonderful and is a worthwhile place to visit.

He wasn't sure what all he wanted or needed so he wanted to talk to someone who was really knowledgeable about bows, strings, arrows and everything in between. The woman who works there was SO helpful and full of information! I didn't catch her name, but wish I had. They had a really good selection of high quality Matthews bows and bows by Bear, Diamond and other brands as well. They also sell used bows, which are typically full of add ons like specialty sights, stabilizers and whatnot, at a discounted price. I told her what I was looking for, for my own bow set up and she helped me find just the right stuff AND in PINK!! Overall, it was a great experience and I'm glad I talked my husband into making the drive out to Millington to this shop. I now found somewhere where I can feel comfortable going myself and asking for help in regards to something with my bow. I highly recommend this archery place. We also came back in yesterday (07/01/24) I cannot say enough good stuff about this place!!! My husband had a slight peep sight twisting issue and we originally went to a closer archery place to get it fixed, but it didn't actually fix the issue and so the peep sight was off again. We decided to take the drive out here again and SO glad we did. They offered us numerous options for fixes as well and gave us pointers on what to do if certain issues come up. I also brought my bow in to get a kisser button added on and it's perfect. We also ended up being able to use their inside and outdoor range which was AWESOME because my husband especially was finally able to zero in all of his sight pins. They have so many different distances to be able to shoot from too. The folks that run this place are amazing. Such sweet and helpful people. Always have smiles on their faces and willing to chat for a bit and give you little pointers or talk about hunting. I recommend this place a million times over for any and all archery needs.
