Parking is small so we had to park on the side of the road. Dog friendly just make sure your dog is on a leash and controllable, we have a little dog so it was easy to pick him up when we came to a dog on the trail. We stayed for sunset and was worth it. The deep reds and oranges were beautiful. Sun goes down fast and it was so windy and cold. We went about a week and half before Christmas. If you keep walking to the left there was a trail you can do. We chose to perch at the top and just wait for the sunset. Only issue is there are only like 8 parking spaces if you have the time I would get there about 40 mins before the sunsets. The entrance and parking lot is in the middle is residential neighborhood who seem to take prohibited parking seriously there are so many towing signs so just be careful. The park service considers everything ending at the Blue Hole but there is more. Maybe there was full access in the 1970's or something back when the stone picnic tables where first put in way before I came around. Been going since 2009. Thing is people already know about "The Party Palace", "The shelves" or whatever you want to call it and its not some big secret. You just have to just keep walking past the Blue Hole about 25 mins or 45 min in total from the parking lot at an adult pace to connect and be ready for a narrow trail with sometimes fallen trees to hop over. The thing is people are going back into anyway so why not make it passable and make it a good solid trail and also clear off all the vegetation that has grown up on the rock shelves. This is not the old rope swing Hole, that is past what I am talking about. I understand the park service does not want to have to go back that far to save dumb people, but again you will have to do it anyway as people already find their way back there and that's locals or tourists too to snorkle or just when the main Hole is just too packed. Heed the new signs they put up about being prepared if you hike down into the remote areas of the cumberland trail (~1 mile past boston branch overlook). I've never crossed anyone hiking in that area, except camped out. You are on your own. Panther branch overlook is well worth a visit but a very hard hike from montlake TH (13 miles, 2700+ ft up and down). Overall, I love how varied this portion of the trail is, and the density in points of interest is high. Yes the blue hole is popular. I'm mostly just a hiker but I'm still happy to see other people using the park, assuming they don't trash the place. There's not much more they can do to expand parking. Room is obviously limited around the parking area and it's a nature preserve, after all. I come early and/or avoid the weekends, and I've never had any problem. These places exist as a free public service so most complaining about it's management strikes me as entitlement.

Walmart is less than 2 miles away for any last minutes needs and activities galore on site and in Chattanooga. We were thrilled with everything and will be back!!

There is a small parking lot that holds maybe 6-8 vehicles. There is a plaque explaining the historical significance of the site, then a stone pathway leading down to the edge of the cliff. The stone path turns from smooth to rocky, but it was a fairly easy hike down and back up. Once you reach the end of the path you are greeted by magnificent views of the Tennessee River and mountains. The area is not very large. We luckily only encountered a few other people on our adventure. Two ladies had brought lawn chairs and were sitting off to the side watching some rock climbers rappel down the rocky sides of Lookout Mountain. They had the right idea (the ladies, not the climbers 😂)!We saw a path off to the left and walked down it a little ways before turning back. I’m not sure how far it went or where it lead to. This was a wonderful surprise to behold with my own eyes. I would definitely recommend checking out Sunset Rock. Also a good thing to mention is that there are NO railings or fences to prevent someone from falling off. It’s about 1,300 feet up and you would surely meet your maker. I do not recommend bringing small children or misbehaved animals as you may never see them again!

Not for road biking. We were looking for a good rode bike ride, not gravel or mountain bike. After reading the reviews here I thought I'd check the trail out. I was told the southern half of trail was in disrepair and had confusing or no signage so I started at the 4026 Shallowford Rd parking area. The parking area was old, small, and not very nice. Walked up some steps to see a surprise trail in tough shape. It looked like blacktop gravel. We then proceeded to 3650 Faith Road parking area. It's really a stretch to call it a parking area. I would not recommend driving your car in this area, let alone getting out of your car. Disheartened, we drove to the Chicamauga Dam parking area to get a look at the sidewalk that is called the Tennessee Riverwalk. I think some of the reviews of this trail are misleading and inaccurate. The boardwalks, if you call them that are also old and in disrepair. Overall disappointed. I parked at Signal Point and hiked down to Julia Falls. It is a rough terrain. I had to climb over many borders, limbs, and fallen trees on the trail. I would not recommend starting at Signal Point though since there are some very steep steps that are hard to get up. It feels raw, it feels a bit remote, has a large climb followed by a long descent, and a good mix of chunk, flow, and some spots you’re most likely going to hike your bike. The downhill wasn’t too crazy, just long and sustained (and super fun) and you get quite a bit of speed in spots. More flowy and fast up top with some spots you can get a little air, more chunky around mid way down and to the bottom. I’ve heard of people shuttling it, but I’m a sucker for punishment, so the climb is a must. One last note: I Recommend wearing long sleeves and bringing bug spray. My first time at Raccoon mountain trails. I had an amazing time here. Some of the best trails I have ever ridden. These trails are beautifully built. Kudos to the builders. Build around a reservoir and hydroelectric plant, Trails appropriately named with the electric theme in mind. I parked by the boat ramp and biked up Raccoon mountain road on the east side. Rode Electric Ave and High Voltage for a total of 7+ miles of almost all downhill. What a fabulous place to ride. These trails have everything you would want in a trail. Great climb, technical rock section and fast and flowing downhill with great scenery. I also rode Live wire 1 twice what an awesome fast and flowy trail. In one area I could not find the trail at all and just have to walk through a grassy field for a while until I found the trail again on the other side. Also if you're going to do this hike you need to wear pants because the grassy area is completely overgrown and your legs will get really itchy when you walk through it. The first part of the hike is mostly uphill then it goes back down and then levels off for a while. The trail was actually okay until it got to the road. Right off a dirt/gravel road, there will be plenty of parking. Signs will give directions on many of the trails in the area, including the Mullen's Cover Trail. There is an outhouse if needed, but I hope you won't (for your sake). You can take Mullen's cove in two different directions, clockwise or counter clockwise. The clockwise trail will start across the road from the parking area and will take you down to a rock shelter, and then straight to Snooper's Rock. The counter clockwise trail will be marked by a small, easy-to-miss sign off the parking area. This route will take you through a lovely area of creeks and streams, before eventually looping you toward Snooper's rock and back to the trailhead. The hike is beautiful with lots of different terrain. This is probably a moderate hike, but it is a full 10 miles. Enjoy!

Signal feels more primitive and ancient than Lookout. The hiking in the area gets 5 stars but I’m taking off one for the review because of the lousy communication about the extended closure. It really does suck to drive all the way to the area and then to the top of the mountain just to get to the trailhead and see a sign saying closed. Please think about the visitors that travel here to enjoy the trails and do more to communicate any closures. It’s not the worst thing that has happened to me in my life but it’s irritating and was an inconvenience all the same.
